Angelos Creations Olfactives Pnoi

Pnoi is the latest release from Angelos Creations Olfactives and for those with a love of vintage perfume you’re in for a treat as Angelos Balamis has taken his love of perfume history and given us Pnoi which blends past and present into a stunning complex yet beautifully wearable perfume. So much so that it’s taken me multiple attempts to find the words for this as I get lost in its elegant movements and forget to take notes on this perfumed journey. Pnoi is something of a contemplative perfume for me, its scent is one of a pleasure to be alive, and it blossoms with a bouquet of nature then slowly because deliciously debauched with a rather sensual powdery leather. Wicked flashes of dreams and desires emerge from the journey Pnoi takes you on, making this a rather special leather chypre.

Pnoi violets blossom from fresh bitter greens, it’s like a breath of life exhaled from your skin full of nature’s greenery. Soft blonde woods splashed with round creamy citruses feel like sun light shining down onto this new freshness as a fiery violet bursts from its green shell as soft abstract florals bloom from these new stems of life. Pnoi takes on a refined powdery quality, reminiscent of vintage perfume elegance as if the scent of Après L’Ondee is lingering on a silk scarf once adorned with Jolie Madame. With its classic French perfumery elements, the violet steals your attention, yet a deeper, more contemporary leather undertone simmers beneath, adding a daring twist.

Pauline Réage’s Story of O

The complete Marquis de Sade and Pauline Réage’s Story of O book covers via wikipedia

There’s something about wearing Pnoi that sparks vivid images of classic erotic literature in my mind. The way its soft floral notes intertwine with rich leather becoming beautifully corrupted makes me think of Anne Desclos’, under the pen name Pauline Réage, Story of O or scenes from the Marquis De Sade’s various tales, it has an old world erotic feel. Pnoi gets lush with florals as it’s its sunny citrus spill over onto suede like jasmines dripping in silky orris butter, as a velvety violet is gentle caressing the petals as if moved by a gentle wind. Lily to the valley’s clean soapy muskiness tries to hide the wonton desires, but it’s betrayed by warm floral spices and mossy dirty hay musks whispering of erogenous zones, as the petals lift up to reveal more. There’s a delicious soft warm spice that reveals some excitement just below the powdery veil of violet as sandalwood rises up to give a firmness in the base. Dark leathery aromas are felt more here as petals darken from hay as you see deeper into the heart of Pnoi.

Sculpture-lampe

Sculpture-lampe by Alina Szapocznikow via Wikipedia.

Pnoi’s dry down purrs with a lush Mousse deep Saxe base that’s expertly expanded making it feel opulent and sensual in all the best ways. Mousse de Saxe has this rather carnal feel to it, it’s like a heavy sweet earthy green mossiness that’s fresh and animalic all at once, it’s like a sexual forest floor humming with dark round spices and soft powdery florals all rubbed over smooth dark leather to form this erotic musk. It’s this shift from florals and greens, to a more sensual bodily feel brings to mind the works of post-war artist Alina Szapocznikow. She redefined sculpture as a reflection of memory intertwined with her own physicality. Despite her career lasting less than twenty years, cut short by her untimely death in 1973 at the age of 47, Szapocznikow left a remarkable legacy of daring pieces that draw from Surrealism, Nouveau Réalisme, and Pop art. Her work, particularly ‘Sculpture-lampe XIII,’ boldly explores themes of sexual power dynamics and the human form, almost as if they are emerging from nature in a sensual human-like manner. Her sculptures embody a twisted, erotic beauty; a petit Fleurs du Mal. Just like Pnoi, nature is brimming with sensuality, echoing its erotic blooms and leather undertones.

All these elements and facets are given the royal treatment and expanded beautifully with some delicious materials. Three things I pick up on are Animalis, a classic dirty musk base you’d know from the likes or Kouros, it’s gives the mossiness this kinky unwashed cost us like hair feel with jonquil making it lush. A soft honey infused benzoin is another element that’s gives a soft focus fuzziness and bodily warmth to the composition, the honey gives its a subtle sleekness, like a soft waxy sweat over naked sandalwood flesh, its this aged sandalwood that’s keeping powdery floral feel. Leather is the final element that’s really shines with all the elements amplifying it’s various facets giving it a cosy worn in feel, with the musky waxy moss like its sensual soft nap on the reverse side. Hay and orris whisper of its history of being worn with hints of damp coolness and a softness from where leather has met the body. Letting softly spiced violets haunt the air around you. Pnoi has a beautiful corrupted innocence about it, as its sweeter florals fail at hiding its desires. Pnoi is a perfume lovers dream, its takes you through the history of perfumery, whispers of Guerlain, Balmain and a hint of Chanel’s Cuir de Russie yet what we really get is Angelos, Pnoi is his bright and shining optimism and love of perfumery all packed full of opulence. It makes me feel safe knowing that perfumery is in hands like these.

  • Pnoi strikes me as a deeply evocative and emotional fragrance, capturing the ethereal essence of breath and nature, as described in j’s review. The interplay of ozonic and mineralic notes, combined with an almost meditative quality, makes it sound like a truly unique olfactory experience. I appreciate how Angelos Balamis blends innovation with a neo-vintage approach, creating scents that resonate with both memory and modernity.
As for my favorite from Angelos Creations Olfactives, I am drawn to Aeon 001 for its minimalist yet profound statement on timelessness.
I live in Romania, Europe. Thank you for this generous giveaway!

i like it when perfume descriptions get horny, it’s something so innate in us, yet it’s often overlooked, especially in the context of perfumes. so refreshing to read a review that bravely embraces this aspect of perfumery! i’m intrigued as how the perfume is experienced, considering how many raw materials are inside!

  • J highlights the emotional impact of Pnoi, noting how it evokes memories and feelings associated with the Greek landscape. This emotional resonance is a testament to the fragrance’s ability to connect with the wearer on a deeper level and this really strikes me. I would say Cuir Fleurissant would be my favourite. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Leather is an acquired note in my opinion sort of like patchouli, you either love it or hate it. Now when we add a chypre-style fragrance mixed with leather, it does change the composition completely. Taking the wearer on a journey reminding us of fragrances from the past but also adding the modern touch to it, Pnoi is very complex and yet familiar. You can see by the note and the concentration that this is a potent fragrance, less is more. I’d be interesting to experience this fragrance and real life and see what facets of it each person picks up. I’m located in the USA.

OMG J, you are evil!!! Stop making me want/need this in my life for real! 😀 I love a dirty, vintage leather chypre and those notes are just making me drool. This house is one I really need to sample. Thanks for there fomo inducing review and giveaway. I’m in Brooklyn, NY

  • The notes strike me as I love powdery violets. I have not tried anything from Angelos Creatition Olfactives yet and I see that it’s time I do. Thank you for the chance to win. NY state

  • I was skimming the article until I saw the image of the ‘Story of O’ and so figured this might be more to this and started to read again a bit more attentively. I was rewarded if a wonderfully discrptive piece about I an animalis, dirty musc honey & leather sent and an internal debate if I should add this to my the most private thing I am willing to admit on my OK cupid profile

  • Omg I’m thrilled by the beauty emanating from this review. I’ve already heard about Angelos and his skills, and I’m very curious to try it. This perfume speaks to my heart, as a lover of vintage and a nostalgic admirer of great classic chypres…

  • Those who avoid influence are those who find this noble kinship unworthy of themselves, said André Gide.

Like Martial Raysse and his Made in Japan series, Angelos Balamis embraces the influence of other artists and offers a new perspective on their beautiful works: be it Jacques Guerlain’s version of Cuir de Russie with Cuir Fleurissant, Ernest Daltroff’s Tabac Blond with Grace d’Orient or regardless of age, Dominique Ropion’s Superstitious with my favorite, Yassemi.

What I understood from J’s review is that Pnoi is a composition with a prominent leather accord, full of natural extracts and their co-infusions adding immensive richness; like in the old times, unobtainable otherwise. As someone who loves leathers and is uncomfortable with perfumes that are considered leathery today, I foresee that I will love Pnoi.

I’m located in France, and thanks for this generous giveaway.

I’m very intrigued to try Angelos Creations Olfactives “Pnoi”. I’ve never tried anything from him yet. On account of being a Cafleurebon reader and a follower of Sebastian Jara’s channel for years now, I’ve been very interested in trying his fragrance releases for a while now.

Angelos Creations Olfactives “Pnoi” seems very complex, and I’m under the impression that I’d enjoy a lot of nuances every time I’d wear it. I’m interested to see what the Animalis is like in combination with the other notes. I think I like animalis, if that’s used in Amouage “Figment Man”, for example.

I become even more intrigued than before to try Angelos Creations Olfactives “Pnoi” when J Wearescentient describes it by saying: “Pnoi is a perfume lovers dream, its takes you through the history of perfumery, whispers of Guerlain, Balmain and a hint of Chanel’s Cuir de Russie yet what we really get is Angelos, Pnoi is his bright and shining optimism and love of perfumery all packed full of opulence. It makes me feel safe knowing that perfumery is in hands like these.”

I’d love to win a bottle of it. I live in MD, USA

What strikes me about Pnoi is how complex and seemingly variable it is, meshing the florals and vintage powdery feel with a modern leather/suede. I’m in the U.S.

  • Oh my goodness how did I not know of this release? I love his Grace d’oOrient, Irida extrait, Angeliki and so many more. I love his carnation accord in his L’Oeillet and I cannot wait to try this! I adore violet and “vintage” esque fragrances and Angelos knows how to do it! This is exciting! I hope I am the lucky one for his generous give away.

  • What strikes me most about Pnoi is its captivating blend of contrasts—innocence and sensuality, vintage elegance and modern daring. The fragrance moves from fresh, floral notes to deep, sensual leather, creating an experience that feels both timeless and provocative. It’s a beautiful tribute to classic perfumery, infused with a bold, contemporary edge.
    I’m from Italy.

  • What struck me most is the number of notes listed and the varied descriptions of the stages of the perfume by the reviewer. I don’t have a house fave as of yet. US

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

The review reveals to me an old school perfume that has multiple valences from agony to ecstasy from fresh to sensual to indolic, dirty naughty. All this intrigues me and makes me curious to see what it is like. I am from EU

  • CeliaHEARTSperfume says:

What I enjoyed about J review of Pnoi was it is shows his understanding of Angelos Balamis and his talent. I do love vintage perfumes, so this line resonated: “Pnoi is the latest release from Angelos Creations Olfactives and for those with a love of vintage perfume your in for a treat as Angelos Balamis has taken his love of perfume history and given us Pnoi which blends past and present into a stunning complex yet beautifully wearable perfume.” I ordered a sample of Yassemi from Luckyscent and it the most beautiful and unique jasmine. USA

  • Wow, reading J’s review of Pnoi really took me on a journey! The way it blends vintage elegance with modern sensuality is so captivating. I love how the florals and greens evolve into something deeper and more complex, like a beautiful dance between nature and desire. The mention of Mousse de Saxe and leather in the dry down makes it sound so rich and textured, almost like wearing a second skin. It’s fascinating how it balances soft, powdery notes with that raw, animalic edge. I’m really curious to experience it now.

For me, my favorite from the brand has to be Krinos. It has that same depth and complexity but with a more serene vibe. It’s like a perfect blend of vintage and modern, much like Pnoi but in its own unique way.

  • This carnal perfume awakes ancestral parts that connect us to the nature and with our basic instincts but I love what you wrote in the review: “Its scent is one of a pleasure to be alive”

I don’t have any vintage fragrances in my collection. This would be one I would love to get my nose on. J describes Pnoi as a leather chypre. That sounds interesting to even though I’m not a big leather fragrance guy. There’s a lot of notes here which makes me super curious as to how all of it would come together.

  • My heart was already aflutter as I read “vintage”, “violet”, and “classic French”, but once my eyes fell upon “Mousse de Saxe”, it began beating heavily and I found myself biting my bottom lip. I am all about neo-vintage (thanks to modern geniuses such as Darren Alan and Manuel Cross), so to see that Angelos is taking his new creation in such a direction is incredibly exciting for me. Pnoi sounds absolutely spectacular and I simply must try it. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • As I’m a literature girl, I was stroke by J’s comparison “There’s something about wearing Pnoi that sparks vivid images of classic erotic literature in my mind. The way its soft floral notes intertwine with rich leather becoming beautifully corrupted makes me think of Anne Desclos’ Story of O or scenes from the Marquis De Sade’s various tales, it has an old world erotic feel.”

J’s review really delves into the meat of this fragrance. Finding similarities with an art form massively different from perfumery, the sculpture mentioned really take my breath away. If this perfume could do that, I want to experience that. I’m sure this scent tells a story as you wear it, which is my favorite style. I do not yet have a favorite. I live in Oregon.

  • First of all, the notes are really impressive, I can only imagine how that smells…
What actually strikes me about Pnoi based on J’s review is how it is a perfume lovers dream as it takes you through the history of perfumery, whispers of Guerlain, Balmain and a hint of Chanel’s Cuir de Russie, Pnoi is his bright and shining optimism and love of perfumery all packed full of opulence.
I still haven’t tried any Angelos Creations Olfactives perfume.

  • As a huge fan of classic Guerlain’s, J makes this sound incredibly intriguing. I haven’t yet had a chance to sniff any Angelos Creations Olfactives scents. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • This neo-vintage chypre seems to hold a lot of complexity with so many note. Lether and Mouse de Saxe got my attention. I have been fortunate to sniff a few Angelos Creations Tabac Libre being a fav. I live in the Us

  • As usual, J gives a very detailed and expansive review of this perfume touching on history, inspiration and notes. Given the violet, leaves, soft blonde woods and lily of the valley, I expected this to be a spring scent, But then we hear about the carnal Mousse de Saxe base, the dirty musk Animalis and leather accord and it becomes quite obvious this is a complex, opulent vintage inspired fragrance. I have not tried anything from Angelos Creations Olfactives yet. MD, USA.

Great review J. The notes and where these notes look to take one , is quite a provocative olfactive journey. One I look forward to experiencing. Thank you for the intro to this house. Looking forward to getting to better know these creations.

  • What a beautiful review by J.! I’m such a fan of Angelos Balamis who dares to make vintage style perfumes of this calibre. I totally see the comparison with Joli Madame in the sense of the style and direction, however as J points out Angelos Creations Olfactives are avant garde and take this to another level.
I have recently bought Angeliki which has just blown me away because it smells vintage yet so current and vivid. Absolutely breathtaking stuff. Pnoi also sounds lovely and will need to explore this one more. Marit the Netherlands

  • Pnoi by Angelos Creations Olfactives sounds like a mesmerizing journey through the history and artistry of perfumery. The blend of fresh, green violets, creamy citruses, and soft florals layered over a rich leather and Mousse de Saxe base promises a fragrance that is both elegant and sensual. I’m intrigued by how it captures the essence of vintage classics like Après L’Ondée and Jolie Madame, while adding a contemporary twist with its daring leather and animalic undertones. The imagery of florals and suede merging with warm spices and mossy musks paints a picture of a fragrance that evolves beautifully on the skin, moving from innocent freshness to a deep, sensual complexity. I can’t wait to experience how Angelos Balamis has balanced these elements to create something that feels timeless yet modern. Pnoi seems like a true tribute to the art of perfumery, blending nostalgia with bold creativity. Greetings from NY 😉

Thank you for the nice writeup J!

I really like reading about Angelos’ fragrances. They are elaborate and have a lot of beauty in them. I’m a big fan of fragrances with an MdS accord and it was so nice to see it here. The vintage nature of this fragrances is evident in the comparisons to the old houses.

Would love to try this fragrance.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Reading your description of the interplay between suede and florals here has me unbelievably excited to try Pnoi. Angelos is one of the most strikingly talented perfumers working, and the way he plays florals and leathers off of each other especially is such a strong throughline in his work. My personal favorite is his leather/rose/animalic powerhouse Danse Lascive, which I think of as a sort of edgier sibling to the divinely supple Cuir Fleurissant. Even when leather isn’t a main character, such as Yloud-Yloud (an absolute must-try for ylang lovers by the way!), I still find beautiful leather textures, often with expert use of orris. I really can’t gush enough about his perfumes! Writing from Chicago, USA

  • A robust leather chypre in the vintage mode is always welcome, and Pnoi sounds like an elegant take on the genre. The nose-catching florals are plentiful, with hints of the debauched, but the Mousse de Saxe accord is what caught my attention; I love other Mousse de Saxe based fragrances and it sounds like a heady foundation here. J’s review highlights the impressive complexity of this design. Pnoi sounds like a wonderful introduction to the Angelos Creations Olfactives line.

  • Oh, this sounds like a wonderful journey, and just a most wonderful review. Please do not enter me in the draw, as I’m not sure i would wear it. Again what a generous review and draw.

  • foreverscents says:

I loved j’s description of the Mousse de Saxe in Pnoi: “it’s like a sexual forest floor humming with dark round spices and soft powdery florals all rubbed over smooth dark leather to form this erotic musk.” This is perhaps the most sensual description of a fragrance I have read in a long time. I love these type of carnal fragrances, fragrances that recall Jolie Madame. I am a big fan of erotic literature, so I loved the references to the Story of O. I had never heard of Alina Szapocznikow, so I enjoyed learning of a new artist.
Pnoi certainly sounds sensuous and opulent. I desire to know this fragrance for sure.
