It’s all bathed in green. No blue. Lights are flashing. Now its magenta. Shadows heave and part under lights that glare and fade as the DJ spins and the music stutters and grooves. It’s hella hot; bodies sexing up the dance floor, dance beat pumping … a couple groping at the bar … Heat and mirrors, she’s … he’s … coming this way. DJ cranks the volume, music gets urgent, dark smells of black leather and cigarettes wrapped around heartache and perfume and weed and unkept promises fill the room. “I wanna sleep with common people, I wanna sleep with common people like you gonna make you sweat I know what I want and I want it now” … So, getcha flirt on, boys and girls, here we go!

Angelos Creations Olfactives Danse Lascive trips you back to 1990s partyland with a reworked version of his 2017 cigarettes, rose n’ leather chypre. Perfumer Angelos Balamis’ revision is essentially the same fragrance but with an amped-up dark, winy rose and a more disciplined and refined chypre structure.  Balamis says “Mid- to late-90s after hours partying and clubbing, leather jackets and intense, bold, no- restrictions perfume, cigarettes, dancing nonstop, flirting … that was my inspiration.” The new iteration of Danse Lascive – dirty dancing in French – is half club diva, half Vespa boy, an all-out smoky bombshell in a leather bomber who probably lives in a mansion and has a dad who’s a viscount.

Danse-Lascive is an unapologetically big fragrance with a huge, multilayered rose right on the top. So, no gentle dabbing here – spray with abandon, I say, and let Danse Lascive do its badass thing. Straightaway, the fragrance jumps out of a barrel of roses soaked in red wine and straight into the arms of a biker boy with a Marlboro hanging from his mouth. There’s lots of satiny Bulgarian rose, and a minute or so later,  another, more vinous smell, like red roses from old vines. A big puff of ash, smoke and saffron follows and hangs around long enough that I half-expect to see a hookah-smoking caterpillar blowing smoke rings in the corner of the room. It’s heady and sexy and gorgeous with the roses.

Leather jacket —  that oily, shoe polish and hide smell – moves sinuously through the smoke and you know you’re gonna follow him even though you shouldn’t.

Then there’s a pause.

Great night club and discos

High-end dried rolling tobacco, the kind you get in a pouch from a specialty store, expands across the center of the fragrance. Its dried grass, mulchy aroma is homey and warm, like you just walked out of the club and found yourself in a stable mid-afternoon in summer. Tobacco’s effect on the fragrance is fascinating; it calms down the bigness of the leather, smoke and roses and adds a down-to-earth, even comforting quality. Birch, which can easily take over a fragrance, registers but stays nicely in check, augmenting the perfume’s smokiness without getting in the way of the less aggressive notes. All the while, the roses stay in the foreground but give way graciously to touches of oakmoss and labdanum that leave a vintage chypre calling card.

Danse Lascive shares some similarities with Rogue Perfumery’s Rostracto –  a central, smoky rose and cedary base – but where Rostracto fractures and refracts its central notes, spinning them slowly like a disco ball, Danse Lascive whirls them around the dance floor, partnering its roses with sweat and hide, then oakmoss and suede, as the fragrance trips from naughty to nice. In the drydown, Danse Lascive remembers her breeding, slips on her elbow gloves and goes back to the 1950s – there’s a tinge of Rochas here in the way the civet and suede pop up at the end with the chypre notes of oakmoss and labdanum.

If you like your roses to party like its 1999 but dress in Dior, Danse Lascive is for you.

Notes: Rose damascena essential oil from Bulgaria, dark rose accord, bourbon geranium, Greek saffron tincture, white birch rectified oil, black leather jacket, rose damascena absolute from Turkey, animalic notes, suede, tobacco absolute from Bulgaria, after hours 90s night club, olibanum, atlas cedar, hyraceum absolute, civet (reco.), vetiver java, oakmoss absolute, labdanum absolute.

Disclaimer: Sample of Danse Lascive kindly sent to me by Angelos Creations Olfactives. My opinions, as always, are my own.

What a nice review! Danse Lascive appears to be a bold and provocative fragrance that aims to capture the atmosphere and essence of 1990s party culture. The aspects that stand out for me are:

Intense, Multilayered Rose: I am a big roses fan! The fragrance prominently features a strong, multilayered rose note, with both Bulgarian rose and rose absolute from Turkey. This gives the fragrance a heady, seductive quality and serves as a central focus.

Smoky and Sultry: The scent incorporates elements of smoke, ash, and leather, creating a dark and alluring ambiance reminiscent of clubs and after-hours partying. These notes add depth and sensuality to the composition.

Chypre Structure: Danse Lascive follows a chypre structure, which traditionally combines citrus, oakmoss, and labdanum. This structure adds a vintage touch to the fragrance and contributes to its overall complexity.

Tobacco and Birch: The fragrance introduces a dried rolling tobacco note that adds warmth and a comforting quality. Birch is also present, enhancing the smokiness without overpowering the other notes.

Transition and Evolution: The fragrance seems to transition from a bold, rebellious character in the beginning, with elements like leather and smoke, to a more refined and vintage elegance towards the drydown. This shift creates an intriguing journey and adds versatility to the scent.

Retro and Nostalgic Vibes: The fragrance pays homage to the 1990s era which is very close to me, specifically the clubbing scene of that time. It captures the spirit of that period, evoking memories of parties, dancing, and youthful energy.

Overall, Danse Lascive appears to be a distinctive fragrance that embraces its intensity and evokes a specific time and atmosphere. It offers a rich and complex experience through its interplay of rose, smoke, leather, and other supporting notes, aiming to transport the wearer to a bygone era of hedonistic pleasure.

I would love to try it!

Hello from Florida, and thanks to Lauryn for the review!
I love an unabashed animalic, and this one sounds nostalgic in the best way.

  • The unique story behind this fragrance strikes me also the notes sound very intriguing to me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Being that I spent my teenage years in the 90s, I may or may not have been to a few underground raves back in the day. This fragrance seems like it is aiming to capture the essence of those events – bold, energetic, a bit naughty and unbridled. As a rose fanatic, I was already drawn to this but to see that it’s rose combined with leather, smoke and a bit of skank has me dying to get my nose on it. Lauryn briefly contrasted it to Rogue’s Rostracto (one of my favorites and my scent of the day), and it seems like Danse Lascive takes many of the same elements and puts a very different spin on them. I have tried a couple offerings from Angelos Creations Olfactives; specifically, Eau De Vertu and Angeliki. Each of those easily ranks among the most expertly crafted fragrances I have tried in the last few years. That said, I am fully confident that Danse Lascive will not disappoint. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Love the inspiration for this as I spent much of the late 90’s dancing and carousing myself. This sounds really fun and I like the fact that there’s some vintage chypre notes in the base. From USA.

  • Jeremy Upshaw says:

Dang, Lauryn got me wanting to dig out the leather jacket, stoke up a Marlboro and head downtown for the 2 a.m. warehouse after-party with this review. This seems like a good alter-ego to my incense-heavy, gothic, church-smoke array – this would definitely be the bad-boy of my smoky scent library.

The hypnotic cycle of rose, cypress, moss, leather, civ, and tobacco would be enough to keep me entertained for a night in; but I’d love to turn heads with this as I walk into the one-horse corner store to get my provisions for a trip to a big city party.

  • All the notes are right up my alley. I do enjoy a unisex smoky rose fragrance. I liked Lauryn’s image of a “hookah-smoking caterpillar.” Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • Angelos Creations Olfactives Danse Lascive looks like an exciting creation with prominent rose and leather vibes. It is a rework of original creation by Angelos but seems to smell almost same and pays tribute to 90s club scene. I am in US.

  • Oh wow!! 1990s partyland – after hours partying and clubbing – this brings back some sweet memories!
And a rose n’ leather chypre depicts the era absolutely perfect – cigarettes, smoke, dark winy rose, intense, bold, no- restrictions.. I love it!!!!

I’ve tried many leather perfumes butstill haven’t found the right note, so if Lauryn says this is a high-end dried rolling tobacco with a dried grass, mulchy aroma, I believe her and am more than ecstatic to try this work of art!

I was going to dismiss this as another pseudo, experimental, attention seeking new wave fragrances of late. But… this is right up my alley, from the vibe and description. I love the concept, I love the inspiration – and above all – it seems aimed at the real adults (of any age). I would love to win this one.
“remembers her breeding, slips on her elbow gloves” – what an evocation! I dive back in my old bags with my party garments and find some nostalgic 90s memories. And Blur song is top.
    Many thanks from Slovakia

  • That’s a huge list of notes for this great sounding fragrance. Tobacco fragrances are one of my favorites. Not only does this sound tasty the bottle is awesome looking. I would buy this just to put in my curio to display.

    Thanks from the USA

This perfume sounds soooo fun, flirty, naughty and badass! Roses and leather and smoke and birch… What a party!
Loved this part: “Straightaway, the fragrance jumps out of a barrel of roses soaked in red wine and straight into the arms of a biker boy with a Marlboro hanging from his mouth.” So cool!

  • Thanks for the review Lauryn,

The mid-ninties is when I started going out to the clubs myself. As most other young men I wore Le Male and I’ve always loved the compliments and feeling confident when wearing it.
‘Clubbing’ fragrances always bring back great memories and a fragrance like Danse Lascive might bring me back to the clubs!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • This sounds like my perfect perfume. Rose, leather and smoke with a 90s vibe, yes please! I was there at the time when your clothes stank of smoke after a night out dancing…thank goodness for smoking bans. I’m UK

  • Great review by Lauryn, as always.
Danse Lascive seems like a very cool fragrance to be honest, I think that the idea of roses soaked in red wine is just amazing.
I also love the notes of saffron and bourbon, so I think that this is a great fragrance to stand out in a dance night. I might remember the times I used to go to clubs.

A very eloquent review, Lauryn! I can almost hear the pounding beat and see the day-glo sticks. Danse Lascive is a perfume for a rave. You can’t go wrong with a smoky rose chypre. Angelo’s’ sourcing of notes seem impeccable. I’m particularly interested in the Greek saffron tincture, the dark rose accord and the black leather jacket accord. The reference to the 1950s Rochas towards the end is also intriguing. MD, USA.

  • I love a dirty rose scent, especially with tobacco, and Danse Lascive sounds like exactly that! I’d love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

I had not heard of Angelos and his amazing fragrances before reading Lauryn’s wonderfully evocative and clearly personal review. I loved being thrust into the middle of a 90’s dance floor through reading her detailed review.
This perfume sounds absolutely divine. It combines so many elements that I love in a composition! Bold! Leather! Roses! and Cigar smoke! I like the mixing of high end elements such as the rose with the dirty civet and leather and rolling tobacco. Takes me back to my clubbing days before covid. I also love how unrestrained this perfume sounds.
I would LOVE to have a bottle. And thanks for introducing me to this wonderful new house and perfumer. I have a soft spot for indie frags. I can’t wait to explore more from this house.

Ah the scents concept and imagery reminds me very much of the storys told by my elders at work and in my hobbies how clubs where when they where young that dark seedy shoulder to shoulders rooms with thick clouds Of cigarette smoke and flutters of the lady’s perfumes , sounds wondrous.

I’d very much want this , I’m based in the uk

  • Nice review Lauryn! I kinda miss the 90´s party culture in a blooming Madrid, so this Angelos Balamis’ reworked or revised version of his 2017 fragrance, made me go back to that time. To me sounds like a glorious Leather (jacket) perfume. The use of the amazing roses oil Angelo has gathered is the other focal point: a winey rose enhanced by the saffron: looks like is a not shy and apologetic Malle’s Rose & Cuir. Of course, in the 90´s discos were a tobacco heaven and Angelo uses tobacco’s (great oil from Bulgaria) and the effect on the fragrance seems to be fascinating. I guess is an hedonistic, full of spark, unique and different scent that will difficult to miss. I live in Spain, EU

Angelos Creations Olfactives Danse Lascive sounds fantastic!
A smoky bombshell in a leather bomber? This is one I would love to wear and I love how it embraced the 90’s nostalgia of the club scene. Oh, how I adore the note of tobacco and Danse Lascive is one I’m sure just captured it beautifully.

What’s not to love about this 90s inspired creation. Roses, wine, leather, tobacco. From the nightclub to an evening of pleasure. A retroactive olfactive journey in a bottle. My nose can hardly wait.

  • Danse lascive sounds truly like a lavish perfume! I can find the most luxurious notes there: the queen of flowers, the rose; red wine, the liquor of the gods; precious tobacco and leather – everything about this perfume screams classy, big and bold. Lauryn’s comparison about the “half club diva, half Vespa boy” makes it only more exciting: a fluid perfume which has no gender, or rather, has all genders.
Would be delighted to smell this!
    From the EU.

I love that this is described with party pics, the whole vibe is on point as someone who loves going out. Rose is better when it’s mixed with smoke and tobacco. Greetings from EU.

  • wandering_nose says:

Ah thank you Lauryn for this transporting review! I feel like jumping on the hot spinning dancefloor right away and totally forgetting the world for a few hours. Just like I used to do in late 90s!!! Back then, a young uni student, I wasn’t bold or daring enough to put on a leather jacket, red lipstick or a dark and sexy fragrance. The change that has taken place in me over the years until this day, makes me feel Danse Lascive would be an absolute man-eater smell on me, especially as I adore a deep, wine’y rose. I would wear it with gusto, just like I do my fine black leather jacket these days. I love the way the rose in D. L. melds into one with the bad-ass leather, without the urge to compete as rose oftentimes does. Thank you from Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • This review made me laugh a few times with the super imaginative description. What strikes me is the “amped-up dark, winy rose” that is a bit dirty and ever-evolving through the dry down. I find all of these notes blend perfectly with one another. I love a rose centered fragrance that becomes dark. I’d love to get my nose on this one. I live in Illinois, USA.

  • First of all, this excellent review reminded me to spin Blur and Pulp this week, so thanks for the soundtrack! (The Great Escape is my favorite.) I loved the intro—I can see the thumping, sweaty dance floor, lights pulsing above. This reworked version of Danse Lascive reminds me of Christophe Laudamiel’s Club Design / Scent Tattoo; Balamis’s focus on rose, leather, and smoke sounds equally bawdy and bold. Lauryn’s description of this perfume’s dry tobacco note is really compelling too.

    I’m in the USA.

Oh how I miss going out to night clubs in the 90s. Every night seemed so full of promise that this will be the best night of your life. I love all the notes, especially the black leather jacket and rose absolute. This sounds like a fragrance that will please past and present denizens of the night.

This has a lot of notes going on, but there are some of my favorites – tobacco, suede, leather, rose(s), vetiver… from the looks of it, I am sure I am going to enjoy Danse Lascive.
    Thank you

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice review Lauryn.

Danse Lascive really sounds like a great , old school party and brings a lot of the old club scenes to mind. I like the way Angelos Balamis has used a chypre structure as a base and then built upon it layers of sensual headiness using multiple rose EOs, birch, cade, sude and civet. The tobacco note in this is quite interesting, as usually tobacco tends to subdue, as opposed to benefit the other notes in the scent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love all fragrances and it’s the only thing I collect and can’t get enough of. The darker, the better.

I am not much of a clubbing person as I tend to other activities in my free time, but I cannot deny a great pyramid of notes when I see one! Those roses and animalic notes surely make up to something wonderful and interesting to smell!
Thanks for the review and the giveaway!

  • What strikes me of Angelos Creations Olfactives Danse Lascive for its rose and tobacco. I dont think I have experienced that combo before. There are a lot of notes that I am sure they’re well blending into A magical scent. THANKS FOR THE GIVEAWAY!!!

Very interesting article! What strikes me about Danse Lascive is how Lauryn describes as “a barrel of roses soaked in red wine” combined with a biker boy’s love of clubbing and leather jackets. That sounds absolutely decadent and amazing! Sounds like my idea of a perfect night and a perfect fragrance! I live in the US.
