ånd fragrance by Simon Constantine

We bridge the gap between the old world and a new world. Not just because we use ancient and revered ingredients. But by actively addressing social justice.
By standing in solidarity with indigenous communities and those protecting precious ecosystems.
By hand-sourcing and hand-formulating pure essential oils and essences. We’ll go further. This is just the start.
But if we can reduce the stench of exploitation, mindless consumption, flagrant and disgusting over-indulgence and pointless opulence, then it’s a smart place to start.
So let’s unstink the world.”

Simon Constantine, we’re all ears. We welcome your refreshingly candid philosophy. Ever since I learned of the brand ånd fragrance, I’ve been eager to sniff these out – but they didn’t mail to the U.S. Now they are finally available in the U.S.A at Indigo Perfumery – and very recently Ann Bouterse kindly sent me a sample kit for my delectation. I’m here to attest that there is something for everyone in this collection. True to previous form as a creator for LUSH and Gorilla Perfumes, Simon Constantine continues to garner sustainable olfactory materials from around the globe which he employs in his compositions. I would venture to say that the ånd fragrance collection appears perhaps tighter than his previous perfumes; they are beautifully finished and maintain the perfumer’s proclivity for that unexpected element which renders his scents so appealing and original.

There are certainly gourmands here to tempt virtually anyone – and I’d include his lemon-shortbready (think lemon meringue pie atop a Kerrygold butter crust) får, exotically floral vanilla måd, and inventive, headily anisic/floral/fruity/tonka beån among them. For those who crave an edge, bårk will fill the bill nicely: an eclectic take on rosewood in which the varied players consist of mango, marijuana, and neroli. Earthiest hippies (then and now) will delight in påtch – the nuptials of dark Sumatran patchouli, oud, and osmanthus. Drawn as I am to the woody ones, I chose ånd fragrance frånk, båre, and sånd as my favorite trio. Let’s put it this way: I enjoyed them so much that I went ahead and purchased a little of each.

Frank by ånd fragrance

ånd fragrance frånk: frånk is a delicious surprise, playing upon the lemony facets which incense can manifest (elemi is renowned for this, but a citrusy aspect is characteristic of frankincense as well). The exquisite aridity of myrrh makes an instinctive partner as the two form a loving sacrosanct liaison. You might surmise that this fragrance would seem overly dry and dusty, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. frånk commences with a brief tonic blast which morphs into a soothing, tender scent, soft and sweet. Lemon remains lemon, but it smells neither astringent nor acrid; there’s a kiss of effervescence about it which retains its freshness into the drydown. frånk is a marvelous choice for summer wear, or any time one desires becalming. Notes: Somalian frankincense, myrrh, lemon

ånd fragrance bare

ånd fragrance bare: Taken at face value, båre appears as an intense conifer grocery list: appearances can be deceiving. While båre opens with a sylvan trumpet fanfare upon first application, this stage doesn’t persist. The fragrance truly develops and takes the wearer on a journey through the forest, complete with twists and turns along the way. It reminds us how complex and jammy certain conifers smell in absolute format, which they most certainly do. The Western red cedars of British Columbia embody the deliciousness of anise and fruit; Douglas fir is like confiture for the nose, with its red raspberry and blackcurrant nuances; shore pine is light, bright and terpenic. Rosewood (aniba rosadora is a member of the magnolia family – and an evergreen) has qualities which endear it to us: deeply balsamic, fruity/floral and camphoraceous with a touch of pepper, it is naturally rich in linalool – a naturally-occurring substance which promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being. Notes: Western red cedar, shore pine, Douglas fir, rosewood

ånd fragrance sånd: It’s not nice to play favorites, as everyone knows – but I’m going to go out on a limb and declare ånd fragrance sånd as my favorite. Ever since I sampled it, I’ve been besotted; this is yet one more instance where listing notes doesn’t do a fragrance justice. Toss your prejudices into the trash and trust your nose: you don’t have to love banana, or mimosa (who doesn’t love mimosa?) to appreciate sånd’s warm, engaging personality. From beginning to well into its drydown, this perfume is pure pleasure: mimosa, banana and spice contribute luminosity and character to luxe sandalwood and vetiver. Labdanum adds a crepuscular aspect, with benzoin helping to anchor and round out the composition. The end result is a fragrance which is as supremely comforting as it is sophisticated; it possesses superior longevity as well. Notes: Australian sandalwood, mimosa, Madagascan vetiver, banana, cardamom, black pepper, labdanum, benzoin

Sample set of eight kindly provided by Ann Bouterse of Indigo Perfumery – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

~ Ida Meister, Deputy and Natural Perfumery Editor

Deputy Editor Note: In the interest of disclosure, you’ll need to know that I have sweet-amplifying skin: our Editor-In-Chief Michelyn Camen was wont to note that both former Managing Editor Mark Behnke and I possess “peacock skin”, as she referred to it – skin that tends to showcase scent and make nearly any fragrance smell good. My issue is that if there is just a scootch of sweetness, it will declaim its presence boldly upon application. This is why I’m careful with gourmands; I either smell like a pâtisserie on legs, or run the risk of being bitten by the hungry. Even the woodiest of fragrances tend to skew honeyed when I wear them – which explains my choices above.-Ida

It’s fun to read about new fragrances. Bare sounds interesting in it’s use of different woods to make an unique woody scent. I’d love to win a bottle of Bare. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I was such a fan of Gorilla Perfumes. I remember buying Sikkim girls. From Ida’s choices I would select Frank, for its soothing incense and lemon. I am so glad that all the ingredients are sustainable and eco-conscious. USA

  • What an intriguing brand! I have never heard of ånd fragrance before but am completely taken by their story, mission, and aesthetic. Oh my, those bottles are truly stunning works of art. I appreciate that Ida chose 3 different types of fragrances to review, giving us a spectrum to examine. Of the 3 discussed here, I think båre and sånd would likely suit me more. Though frånk sounds delectable of paper, lemon almost always comes off as furniture polish on my skin so I am hesitant. I would certainly sample and give it a fair shot, though. I think I would appreciate the woodiness of båre. I don’t have many fragrances in that category and have slowly been expanding. Ida spoke of the jammy qualities of certain conifers along with the balsamic and camphorous notes of rosewood, elements that I think I would really enjoy. That said, I believe sånd would probably be my top pick from the bunch. I am a sucker for spicy warm scents and it appears to tick all the right boxes. Labdanum and benzoin are two of my favorite resinous materials, and cardamom is a contender for favorite spice alongside anise. It is the banana, though, that has me salivating. I love the unique sweet and fruity character it can provide. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these, Ida. I will be ordering samples immediately. Regarding the draw, I would choose sånd if I won. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • I do enjoy frankincense in fragrances. The addition of lemon and myrrh makes it appealing to me. If lucky, I’d choose frånk. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • Beautiful reviews by Ida of these 3 interesting gems. The fragrance that tickles my fancy based on Ida’s reviews was ånd fragrance sånd, as I am not a big banana note lover Ida says trust your nose. My #1 favorite fragrance note is sandalwood. So I would love to win ***fragrance sånd*** Thanks for the opportunity and awesome giveaway!!! Greetings from the USA. Cheers.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I appreciate Ida’s description of all three of these fragrances: she truly caused me to want to try all three of them. I like to hear about the lemony incense of “Frank”, the woodiness and the nuances of “Bare”, and the sophistication and superior longevity of “Sand”. I love incense, so normally I’d pick “Frank” if I won, but on account of how enticing “Bare” seems to be based on Ida’s review, I’d choose “Bare” if I win. I hope to try all three of them eventually. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I love that these perfumes are sustainable and highlight natural materials! Ida’s description of the warm and comforting nature of Sand really won me over – Sand is what I would choose if lucky enough to win. I’m in MN, USA.

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

I have been such a fan of Simon Constantine’s work ever since all of his compositions for Lush. Breath Of God is one of my all time favourite perfumes! I’m glad Ida chose his new house to highlight in this wonderful review.
And I must say I got that same excitement reading her review of Sand as I got when first trying some of Simon’s Lush compositions. Like Ida said, there is so much more to his compositions than the note breakdown can tell you. In Sand I am excited by the banana note instead of being repelled by it, because I trust that Simon knows what he’s doing. Sand, as many of the other works by Constantine seem wonderfully unpredictable – which is what made me hooked as a perfume lover initially. I love when perfumers think about perfume and ingredients differently and this is precisely what Ida wrote about Sand, which makes me so interested in it. And I am also loving that these notes are anchored down by Sandalwood and resins and making it a comforting scent overall, as Ida wrote. My pick would be, it probably goes without saying, Sand!
I am located in California, USA.

  • What appeals to me about Frank is just three notes listed and I’m not used to seeing those two incense-type notes with lemon. Hard to choose just one for the draw however I’ll pick Frank. US

  • Ken White says:

Ida’s vivid portrayal of these three fragrances has genuinely sparked my curiosity and desire to experience them all. The way she eloquently describes the lemony incense notes in “Frank,” the rich woody nuances of “Bare,” and the sophisticated elegance and long-lasting scent of “Sand” has truly captivated my senses. As someone who adores the aroma of woods, my initial inclination would be to select “bare” if I were to win. Yes, “Bare” is my fragrance of choice. My ultimate aspiration remains to eventually savor the distinctive qualities of all three fragrances.

  • Thank you for sharing new fragrances that I am unfamiliar with.
After reading Ida’s review I would choose Sand because of the banana note, which you do not see used that often in perfumery (I don’t anyways). Thank you for the draw! In the US.

  • So happy to hear ånd fragrance is now available in the US! The no-nonsense message of cutting through all the hand waving and rug sweeping that happens in the industry resonates with me, along with the fact that the perfumes highlight ethically-sourced natural ingredients.
Of the three Ida fragrances Ida highlights here, sånd stands out to me on description alone. I love sandalwood and know that finding real sustainable sources isn’t easy, so I read more about the perfume on Indigo Perfumery’s site. I’m so happy to see that Simon is fully transparent about working with Dutjahn sandwood oils, a company aligned with his statement about standing in solidarity with indigenous communities and protecting ecosystems.
And the fragrance notes sound delightful of course, too! Mimosa, sandalwood, vetiver, black pepper…sounds delightful!
    Best wishes from New Jersey!

  • I have several Lush/Gorilla fragrances in my collection and it’s wonderful to see Simon Constantine with a new venture. I’m happy to see he’s maintaining his commitment to social justice and using ethically and locally sourced materials, All three fragrances Ida reviewed sound great but I’m drawn towards sand because I do love banana. I’m in the US.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Ida for the review!

I’ve been wanting to try this brand for the longest time, but their perfumes haven’t been available in the states — it’s great to hear that Indigo Perfumery stocks them now! Sånd sounds compelling — “as supremely comforting as it is sophisticated” — I’d love to give it a try.

  • frank sounds like such an interesting scent. Two of my favorite balsamic notes with bright citrus? Does the lemon represent gold (the color similarity)? Myrrh, Frankincense and gold … was that the inspiration? The other scents sound interesting but frank is right up my alley. Great review Ida. California based.

  • These scents all sound great, with unexpected twists and unconventional combinations. I also appreciate Simon’s focus on natural, sustainable materials and production. I’d love to win frånk! I live in New York, in the US. Thank you!

  • So Unknowingly I may have smelled some of Simon’s work at Lush which is pretty cool. I love the mission statement from the brand. Unlike Ada, the banana notes scares me in Sand. If I were to win Frank would probably be the option.

  • Fantastic review by Ida, as always.
I think the one perfume that got my attention the most was frånk. I love that it maintains the freshness but also get to brings us myrrh and frankinciense, just amazing. Would love to win Frånka, but any of them 3 would be amazing.
    USA here.

  • I love the branding, packaging, and strong messaging of these ånd fragrances. In particular, the bottle design is exceptionally unique, and the handwritten and paint-splattered bottles are wonderful. Also, all three profiled fragrances sound great. frånk is a beautifully simple concept; using lemon to explicitly play up the citrusy aspects of incense is both clever and a welcome seasonal alternative to heavy incense fragrances. båre’s jammy, balsamic take on evergreen is a nice spin on outdoorsy scents. Even more surprising is sånd, with a combination of banana, woods, and spice that sounds like a must-try. I’ll need to see out this discovery pack—or maybe I’ll be lucky enough to win one of these flacons! Great reviews Ida, and thanks for noting how these might wear on you versus someone with less sweet-amplifying skin. Very useful context.

I’m in the USA. My choice would be sånd if I were to win, but I’d love to try any of these three ånd fragrances.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’a reviews of Frank, Bare, and Sand. Brilliant perfumer Simon Constantine has created some super unique gourmandish fragrances that I loved learning about. Thank you to Indigo Perfumery for the giveaway and bringing this amazing line to the USA. All 3 fragrances sound amazing Frank with it’s beautiful lemon, incense, and resinous combination sounds truly divine. Bare with it’s green, woody, and conifer qualities, and Sand with Mimosa, Banana, Spices, and resinous qualities. My normal choice would be Frank or Bare, but I am really intrigued by Ida’s review of Sand. I choose Sand if I win. I am from the USA.

  • johnmadison says:

Bare and Sand sound incredible. I would so love to win one of these!
Thank you for the great review, Ida!

  • FragranceIsMe says:

While all 3 creations sound absolutely wonderful, Ida’s description and bias towards Sand has focused my undivided attention towards this fragrance. Just the notes of vetiver, banana, cardamom, and labdanum sound were enough to stop me in my tracks. However, the added bonuses of comfort, sophistication, and superior longevity are reeling me in with this one. Can’t wait to get my nose on this.

The best part of the article, we love you Ida 🙂
You don’t have to explain anything to anyone, you like what you like . My skin is exactly the opposite, extremely dry , and is easily engulfing not only the gourmand aspects of most fragrances, and almost every other note too. I literally can’t wear 99% of the natural fragrances , because there are nowhere to be found on my skin in less than 20min , no joke .
Simon Constantine i know for his work at Lush and Gorilla Perfumes , huge fan of Cardamom Coffee. ånd fragrances I don’t know , but I’m more than interested, and I’ll sample the whole range.
ånd fragrance frånk fresh take of incense, and lemon
ånd fragrance bare conifer fragrance, with some juicy fruityness
ånd fragrance sånd is the most interesting one , banana with spices ,and Australian sandalwood, the fragrance i’d like to win
I’ll make sure to follow ånd fragrances on Instagram, the other profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thank you

  • I really enjoy ånd fragrance’s philosophy and aesthetic. There are many Lush fragrances that I have enjoyed over the years, so I’m sure I will enjoy most from ånd fragrance. Frånk sounds meditative with its notes of myrrh and frankincense, but light and effervescent with the lemon. I can see how it would be a great choice for summer. I have had the chance to test bare and I really enjoy it. I love fragrances that feature evergreens; they are some of my very favorite notes. I found bare to be quite realistic and it definitely promotes relaxation. It’s a great fragrance. I’ve been very curious about sånd with its notes of banana, sandalwood, and mimosa. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of my favorites, as well. The combination of notes does sound like it makes for a very comforting fragrance. While I really enjoy bare, I would actually choose Sånd based on Ida’s review. Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Indigo Perfumery for another generous giveaway! I am located in the USA.
