“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” Coco Chanel

Chic, that quintessential word that defines a city, a style, a way of inhabiting your own skin. It’s, a glance, a gait, an understated elegance that captivates and sums up Paris, that city that somehow gets under your skin and embraces you with her charms. So, let’s start with a question. What is conjured when you speak the word ‘Paris’, what imagery transports you, what transformation occurs when you think of a Parisian (man or woman)?

Frances Shoemack and Isaac Sinclair of Abel

My recent voyage to New Zealand offered me the opportunity to receive the newest release from ABEL, based in Wellington, ABEL The Apartment ahead of the rest of the world.  As a longtime customer and admirer of Abel and a friend of Frances, it is always my pleasure to write about her latest releases. ABEL The Apartment is a limited edition, created from the vision of my fellow New Zealander’s ex – winemaker turned perfume house, Frances Shoemack and Master Perfumer Isaac Sinclair, it is an exquisite and surprising addition to the Abel collection of 100% natural perfumes.

Inspired by the Parisian apartment, near L’Arc du Triomphe and its elegant Parisian interiors, where Frances and Isaac come together to hold their meetings, they have encapsulated a simple elegance and that almost untouchable, for those of us who live outside of Paris, essence of its style. Sartorial elegance exudes from the very fabric of Parisian architecture, the lines, the decoration, the history that is suffused within the walls of every building in central Paris merged seamlessly with a more modern, edgy style.

ABEL The Apartment embodies all, its opulence is mirrored in gilded reflections throughout its sojourn on skin, the moment you wear it, utter sophistication overcomes you. The essence of that effortless Parisian style glides over you like an haute couture garment that fits you in every curve, custom fit, graceful hands smoothing down the exquisite fabric, as you inhale perhaps you feel that tad bit taller and imbued with a grace, perhaps you catch a glance of yourself in the grand gilded mirror over the central fireplace and draw breath, for Paris casts a spell that traverses time. In this space, in this high ceiling environment where the luminosity of Paris penetrates through sheer fabric undulating in the city breeze, you feel suspended in luxury, a simplistic merging of the historic and the modern.

Aromas of gastronomic delights swathed in a tart, slightly tipsy black cherry, immersed in a dangerous Cacao, yet when encased in a sensual partnership of creamy Tuberose and intoxicating Jasmine, it is so skillfully composed as to render the whole something beyond gourmand, beyond a darky sensual tryst, this is an epitome of Parisian style. Unmistakable yet understated, no need to shout, the right whispers suffice. It wears me so completely and stays in trails and wisps for days, somehow Paris remains on my skin, once visited, never forgotten.

Abel The Apartment perfume

ABEL The Apartment is stylishly atmospheric and lingers like the garments you never wish to remove for they gift a confidence and glamour long into the night, where the view from the apartment balcony is illuminated with the city’s night attire. Drawing close the velvet curtains and lighting candelabra casts another dimension into the four corners. The dress sweeps the polished parquet in arrivals caress and the opulent depths of the perfume emerge cast in Myrrh and Tolu Balsam, refined and composed, welcoming guests into the perfumed lobby as if entering a cloistered enclave, a whispered place where those who know, know. Kisses on the cheek, the subtle touch and the eyes that exchange nodded glances as you are welcomed in. A cocoon of luxury, a chrysalis of all potential.

The Apartment is a preferred place where we would all wish to inhabit, even for a short while, for here is the refinement of a new luxury, a polishing of Hausmannian architecture and modern lines on the interior, it exudes an eternal sense of class and style without compromising its modernity.  It was chosen as one of my 10 Best of 2024 perfumes here.

Note from the brand The Apartment is a Limited-Edition scent made from sustainable, upcycled ingredients, and housed in off-cut packaging — a modern reimagining of luxury fragrance. True to the ethos of Abel Oder and Frances Shoemack, Founder. An upcycled ingredient in fragrance is made of a waste or by-product — the cherry and cacao notes in The Apartment are upcycled, the scent molecules extracted from food production waste-water using patented “Symtech” technology, a process developed by our major fragrance supplier.

  • A scent that is an ode to the city of light…its historic neighborhoods and chic essence that it possesses. Danu notes The Apartment is a celebration of elegance of the architecture, decor and history that Paris is known for; this scent encapsulates for Danu what it is to be Parisian. The tart, black cherry paired with a decadent Cacao and creamy Tuberose and Jasmine is so well crafted it transcends being defined as just a gourmand.

The Apartment is that cozy, safe place we inhabit. Not overly complex but rather simple and yet comforting. Anytime I see a fragrance house that strives to be environmentally conscious and goes the extra mile so that their products are 100% natural I just have to appreciate it more but if the hard work it takes to get there, without ever compromising the quality. Also, purple is one of my favorite
Colors as well so I very much appreciate the lilac hue of the package. I’m ready to spray on The Apartment. I’m located in the USA.

  • Interesting unique gourmand fragrance from abel, i like how it’s inspired by the Parisian apartment, sounds just like a natural beautiful mix, the intriguing cherries and the beautiful jasmine no doubt work in an excellent harmony.

The Apartment’s floral gourmand nature and it’s natural simplicity strike me as a beautiful composition that needs no extra frills. I’ve never been to Paris, but having seen pictures of architecture I can imagine the inspiration here. I really would love to wear this, I will have to put Abel on my radar. Thank you for this beautiful review. I live in Oregon.

  • “Unmistakable yet understated” really got my attention- as did the combination of cherry and floral notes beyond the gourmand. An interesting concept of a perfume inspired by an apartment! I suppose such a place for such an inspirational purpose in such a city. Might the fragrance itself inspire a bit of the creativity and sophistication implied by its namesake? I would love to find out for myself! And the fact that it is made from sustainable, upcycled ingredients adds to my curiosity and respect for the brand. Thank you for this generous draw. I live in the USA.

  • I like how Danu draws comparisons to the fragrance and Paris. I also like how eloquent the review is. The juice inside seems delicious as well. I live in the US.

  • Learning about the fascinating notes of this fragrance struck me, I really like how they create such a beautiful atmosphere. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Such an interesting meld of florals and dark gourmands. Dabbling into more floral chypres, I find myself drawn to other floral concoctions. Danu described how seductive and intoxicating this cherry-floral-amber scent can be and I yearn to take this scent home with me and share it with my fragrance friends. From Oregon, USA.

  • I thought I was done sampling cherry fragrances, but The Apartment sounds wonderful! I love the vivid imagery in this review, and the feel of elegance and luxury it imparts. Sounds like a great fragrance to try! I think I’d like some elegance in my life this year! I live in the US.

TOP: Tart cherry, Rum; HEART: Tuberose, cacao, Jasmine; BASE: Myrrh, Tolu Balsam. A beautiful description by Danu really got to appreciate the notes especially Rum, Cacao and Cherry. The fact this house is environmentally friendly just adds another layer of sophistication. A house that I need to explore further. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Thanks for the wonderful review. This combination of notes seems like a winning combination. Usually the idea of a cherry scent or flavor gives me pause. But the pairing with cacao, and gorgeous florals like jasmine, tuberose and then resinous myrrh sounds like a balanced treat. I would love to see how this plays out on the skin. It sounds cozy and elegant. Thanks! I live in the US

An intoxicating blend of rum, cherry, cacao, Jasmine and Tuberose this sounds like a gourmand lovers dream. Interestingly extracted from food production waste water using patented technology. The fact this house looks after the environment just makes me want to take a closer look at this house. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Oooh, Paris holds so many mysteries for those of us who have visited, and maybe only in a hotel, not lucky enough to know a native. Danu, your review reflects my imagination of what a classic, central apartment would look like, and this scent would be compliment for a fancy outfit for a night out. Thank you (I think?) for making me pine for Paris. If has been too long….
I am (still) in the US.

  • Cherry, cacao, tuberose and jasmine?! Such an intriguing combo. Can’t wait to try it!
The apartment sounds gorgeous. Who wouldn’t want to live there, even for a short while.

  • Ooh la la! Who could resist “aromas of gastronomic delights swathed in a tart, slightly tipsy black cherry, immersed in a dangerous Cacao yet when encased in a sensual partnership of creamy Tuberose and intoxicating Jasmine, it is so skillfully composed as to render the whole something beyond gourmand, beyond a darky sensual tryst, this is an epitome of Parisian style?” What a wonderfully evocative review!

I adore Abel’s fragrances and admire their creativity, embrace of natural ingredients, and transparency and education around their process.

  • Just the word “Paris” alone transports me to strolls along the river and coffee breaks in French bistros. The fragrance feels incredibly stylish, just like the atmosphere in an apartment! Abel’s packaging and brand story appeal to those who love clean design and a thoughtful, “less is more” approach.

  • What strikes me most about Danu’s review is the way she’s captured not just the scent of The Apartment but the entire atmosphere it evokes. The description of Parisian elegance and the interplay between history and modernity makes you feel like you’re stepping into that apartment yourself. I love how the notes cherry, cacao, tuberose are painted as more than just ingredients; they become part of this luxurious story. Now I can’t stop imagining how this fragrance lingers like a memory of Paris, both timeless and modern. Beautifully written!

what strikes me about Danu’s review is the fact that how moody the fragrance is. dark, sophisticated gourmand, The Apartment blends the richness of rum and cacao with the velvety opulence of tuberose and tart cherry.
    I’m from US.

  • I’ve enjoyed all of the Abel fragrances I’ve tried and was intrigued by The Apartment after hearing of it. I love the inspiration behind the fragrance – simple, Parisian elegance and the apartment near the L’Arc du Triomphe. Danu’s comment, “aromas of gastronomic delights swathed in a tart, slightly tipsy black cherry” makes me think of a true gourmand. However, I appreciate Danu’s comment that The Apartment is beyond gourmand. It must be an excellent fragrance, considering it made Danu’s top ten list of 2024!

Thank you, Danu, for the beautiful review, and thank you to ABEL and Frances Shoemack for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • First of all, I just love Abel fragrances and it would make me soooo happy to own this fragrance.
Also, most notes are some of my favorites – cherry, Tuberose, cacao, Jasmine…
What really sparked my interest is Danu’s description “Aromas of gastronomic delights swathed in a tart, slightly tipsy black cherry, immersed in a dangerous Cacao, yet when encased in a sensual partnership of creamy Tuberose and intoxicating Jasmine, it is so skillfully composed as to render the whole something beyond gourmand, beyond a darky sensual tryst, this is an epitome of Parisian style.”

  • Nice review Danu! and very nice also the mega chic apartment where Ms. Shoemack and Mr. Sinclair used in their stays in Paris. So this sartorial elegance is translated to this new scent. An effortlessly sophisticated and whispered gourmand in the opening turns with the help of myrrh and tolu balsam trascend into something darker in a Paris velvety chic night. No less important is that it is a 100% natural perfume, like all Abel’s creations. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Max Corvinus says:

When you mention Paris, I tend to get mainly negative associations. The city is filthy and piss-stained, there are gangs and pickpockets on every corner, and the people are snobbish and unwilling to help. The Eiffel Tower is an eyesore, and I didn’t even want to visit the Leuvre due to the throngs of tourists. Frankly, the only part of Paris I liked were the catacombs.

Your description of this fragrance romanticises Paris as it once was—the centre of the bohemian lifestyle, arts, and culture. If I ever went to Paris again, it would be in a time machine, as I believe that Bellepoche Paris was the real Paris, just like Victorian London was the real London. Today they are just overhyped tourist traps where you can feel the real spirit of the city if you hcan afford luxury experiences. Therefore I view your description of this creation as a memento of a Paris that once was.

As for the scent, it sounds intriguing and different. I’d like to try it for myself and experience the vintage glamour of old Paris.

Wow! What a beautiful review! This perfume sounds so special and it transported me to a luxurious parisian apartment, walking & discovering the unique parisian architecture and style while smelling a intoxicating tart cherry with the warmth of a creamy tuberose inclose of the opulent depths of Myrrh and Tolu Balsam. A dark chic sophisticated gourmand juice that I am very much looking forward to experiencing this creation!
Thank you for the draw !
