Fabriek, Wellington NZ – Final versions of Abel Black Anise, Danu Seith-Fyr

For the last four months I have been privy to a secret, feeling very much like a character in a period spy film noir, sworn to secrecy, a double agent tasked with information not to be divulged.  In December 2022, I was visiting friends and family in New Zealand. Whilst there I visited Fabriek in Wellington, the home of Abel , New Zealand and my friend, founder Frances Shoemack. ‘Come here’ she beckoned and led me to an array of vials, ‘You are the first person outside of Abel to smell this, but don’t breathe a word!!!!’ ; it was the modifications and final version of Abel’s upcoming release and at that stage although I was very excited and intrigued by that brief introduction, I could say nothing, nothing at all……. Until now my lips were sealed but my goodness there is something to say.

Isaac Sinclair - master perfumer for symrise

Frances Shoemack and Master Perfumer Isaac Sinclair of Symrise – Abel

Abel Black Anise, the name already has the cadence of a codename, a clandestine pseudonym, something hidden and secretive, that has laid undiscovered. Frances and master perfumer Isaac Sinclair of Symrise have disrobed natural perfumery and revealed underneath a darkened sultry allure that spins our perceptions offside of the boundaries. Even the Latin name of Star Anise, (Illicium Verum), tells the story, literally translated as ‘alluring truth’. Laid bare for all to see this is natural perfumery for mature audiences, expect the unexpected in this redefining of naturals X-rated.

That strange encounter, beautiful shadows in the dark of night, walk me into the unknown, as in the line from a certain film, ‘to belong to someone you haven’t met yet’*. Star Anise at the very outset stares you right between the eyes, it’s an eye-to-eye initiation that leaves you gasping, stopped in your tracks on the sidewalk, stranded amidst a crowded nightlife, amongst a million faces, and this stranger’s glance pierces the meniscus of your unknown known.  So familiar yet now with a different face, thrown through the prism of a fecund blackcurrant that exudes and a sumptuous cacao heart, an anise fractionated into previously unknown faces.  Walk me out beyond the edges of my perceptions, I willingly embrace the fall.

In these breathless moments that seem endless I am struck by the lifetime that can pass between our eyes, the ‘what if’ that arises from your smoldering heart, how if I linger longer, how intimacy can seduce me in a heartbeat, even without touch. So hypnotic your gaze, so alluring this encounter that is nothing yet everything. Somehow to see all of you in that single contact knowing it is dangerous and unpredictable.  Reason shouts as loudly as it can in the realm of the deaf. I turn a blinded ear for all that exists in this moment of enrapture is my reason. I am contained within this storyline running in parallel to my existence and yet cannot turn away from its progression. Normal life has been suspended.

Abel Black Anise dark natural perfume

Mood Board – Abel Black Anise at Fabriek by Ruby Holland

Progress is rapid, how can one run from an unknown now so familiar within nanoseconds, now all tenderness and embracing, an amber that is titanesque yet folded within a tobacco, sweet and soporific.  Silken night surrounds us, the cocoon is woven fast, he and I stopped in that moment are encircled by this sultry sheath, the only two humans existing. In this alternate laneway we have lived an entire life, been seduced and loved in intensity yet only for a few moments. Dazzling in its wake, the crowd surges forward again and the noises of the street rise again, he passes and is swallowed by the darkness leaving this scent and the breath of heat infused in my body. It is entirely possible to be seduced and devoured in that flash, the recognition in the eyes of an unknown. Nothing is ever the same anymore, that scent remains indelible under skin, untouchable. Eyes will forever see with this new vision tinted in this perfume.

Black Anise Abel Odor

Every aspect of Black Anise turns you inside out, everything you thought you knew, nothing is as it seems, yet its parts are more real than previously understood, as if Frances and Isaac have teased out the inner double lives of all its components, parts of the whole never seen before. They have shed a new light on the world of natural perfumery, something has been undone, let loose, all is possible.

This is the double, the parallel lives we all contain, Black Anise has attained a feat of illuminating a fascinating kaleidoscope that is a witchery of impeccable execution, it is the mirror of our secret selves.  Are those stolen moments beyond our life, of moments suspended when all is possible within an instant, are they a betrayal, a clandestine rendezvous unseen by others or are they an absolute truth, a truth of allure, the light in the darkness and vice versa. Sophisticated, daring and with an impulsive allure I dare you to step out for a moment and experience Black Anise, the knowing Mona- Lisaesque smile will remain lit on your face.

Notes: Star Anise (Illicium verum), Blackcurrant, Cocoa, Tobacco

  • I have a profound affection for star anise and find it very alluring indeed. The way the notes are described make it seem like a heavenly combination. Crossing my fingers that I get to try Black Anise out soon! Hello from USA!

This really sounds different, intriguing and alluring. Notes are such an unusual combination, I’m trying to picture the scent they create. What appealed to me the most in Danu’s review is the part “Every aspect of Black Anise turns you inside out, everything you thought you knew, nothing is as it seems, yet its parts are more real than previously understood… Frances and Isaac have shed a new light on the world of natural perfumery, something has been undone, let loose, all is possible”

star anise liquor is amazing. also anything choco is a must try. unique, so love to test it, from eu

  • The notes of this very unique and intriguing fragrance appeal to me. It just sounds so interesting and beautiful. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Can’t wait to try this. Anise is one of my favorite notes, but all too often it’s artificial & turns cloying after a while. High hopes for the natural version. In the USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

The phrasing in this review is beautiful! Looking at descriptions like a “titanesque amber folded into tobacco.” I’m excited to smell the “kaleidoscope” described here. Anise is a favorite note, and to see it folded in with ambery resinous notes and the intriguing green-fruity-animalic scent that is cassis bud absolute sounds amazing! Especially curious that it’s all natural. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Oh my, this sounds like a late night rendezvous in a bottle. I love star anise and it plays very well with fruits and tobacco, both of which are here. I have never experienced it blended with cacao before and I am super excited to see how they play off of one another. I imagine the subtley sweet and spicy aspects of the anise will compliment the rich warmth of the cacao quite beautifully. I would love ot give this one a shot. I live in NC, USA.

  • emorandeira says:

Black anise is a perfume that really attracks me and more after reading the Danu’s review. Heartbeat, pasission… Words that he uses to introduce this fragrance and make me think of ibte sity and opulence. Cocoa, tobacco, ambery notes…everything I like into a perfume!
    Congratulations for another great article!

  • Based on the review I want this because, “Every aspect of Black Anise turns you inside out, everything you thought you knew, nothing is as it seems…”. US

  • One of my favorite notes is star anise! Black Anise sounds delightful. I’m a fan of Abel and Red Santal is one of my favs from this brand. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

Thanks for the beautiful review, Danu.
Seldom fragrances I encountered have taken star anise as the core theme. Danu’s compliment on its darkness and creativity intrigues me even more.
    Greetings from San Mateo, California.

  • I never experienced star anise in perfume so I’m really intrigued about that note and Abel Black Anise truly has the cadence of a codename, pseudonym, something hidden and secretive that has laid undiscovered. Danu’s review attracted me with the statement: Sophisticated, daring and with an impulsive allure I dare you to step out for a moment and experience Black Anise, the knowing Mona-Lisaesque smile will remain lit on your face. That sounds really promising and tempting!

  • Black Anise looks like an amber tobacco creation with sweet elements. It also seems a different kind of natural perfumery. I am in US.

  • Very Nice review Danu! I guess must be exciting when a perfumer gives you to smell and upcoming release (more over the modifications and last version), you must feel unique and much more exciting when you begin to love the perfume. I love star anise (the star in this show) in food, so important in the chinese five spice powder!. It is amazing that Ms. Shoemak and Mr. Sinclair in an all natural perfume (for mature audiences according to you) achieve to show the inner double lives of all its components that weren´t shown before: so the double or doppelganger are present in this dark and sultry scent with the help of a rich black currant and cacao heart, and a sweet and “soporific” tobacco base. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Reading the review, especially the last part had me very curious of what the perfume smells like, because it seems it’s not going to be what I might think of from reading the notes. So I am indeed very intrigued to smell it!
    I’m in the EU.

Notes: Star Anise (Illicium verum), Blackcurrant, Cocoa, Tobacco. I love Star Anise in perfumery but not in cooking. I am intrigued by the notes especially Tobacco, Star Anise and Cacao. This is a house that I have got no experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • onemechanicalalligator says:

I love star anise & was drawn to Danu’s descriptions of the “sumptuous cacao heart” & the “sweet & soporific tobacco,” as well as the line “something has been undone, let loose, all is possible” in reference to Frances & Isaac’s groundbreaking work in natural perfumery. (Personally I really wished there’d been more of a description of the perfume & what the heretofore unknown facets of the listed notes that come thru in Black Anise are like, rather than so much indulgent prose about the feeling of being seduced by a stranger’s gaze….) I was especially intrigued by the mood board & I would love to know what the poem on the mood board was. In the US.

  • , daring and with an impulsive allure I dare you to step out for a moment and experience Black Anise, the knowing Mona- Lisaesque smile will remain lit on your face.

Notes: Star Anise (Illicium verum), Blackcurrant, Cocoa, Tobacco. This sounds like a magical concoction really fascinated by the notes. This is a house that I need to explore further. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • LovelyMouse says:

What a heartfelt and sophisticated review, I immediately imagine this perfume as a kind of mystical combination of gourmet, spicy and tobacco components. And the fact that the perfume is made up of only natural ingredients makes it even more valuable. I love licorice and anise in perfumes. Cocoa gives it an even more gourmand undertone and mood. The Scandinavian delicacy immediately comes to mind – licorice covered with chocolate shells. Incredible combination of flavors. The diversity of this component, according to Danu’s review, amazes me. I would love to try this intriguing perfume.

The way Danu describes the transformation of this short list of naturals into something entirely new is what appeals to me the most. I’m in the US.

  • johnmadison says:

What a poetic insight to Black Anise.
Star Anise is a note that I am very fond of and I would love to wear a fragrance that showcases it as this one does. And with the notes of an ambery tobacco and the cocoa, this sounds delicious!
    John – Minnesota, USA

  • What a delicious read! I devoured it. Aside from the imagery created by the review, and the Edgar Allan Poe quote, I adore star anise and the other notes sound quite complementary.

    I’m in Texas, USA.

  • I love the poetic review! I also love anise as a scent and as a flavor. Anise and licorise notes can be tricky to get right and balanced, this perfume has some interesting notes that I would be curious to smell altogether. I’m in the USA.

  • I would love to try this. Anise is one of my favorite notes. Not many fragrances do it right. This description is very sensuous and I’d love to smell this on my lady! New Jersey, USA

  • Taleofarose says:

“To belong to someone you haven’t met yet’. I belong to you, Black Anise, and cannot wait to finally meet you!

Awaiting with excitement, from Portugal with love

  • Oh this sounds lovely! I adore star anise and the combination with fruity blackcurrent, cacao and tobacco sounds scrumptious and sensual. I enjoyed Danu’s poetic review. The description of Black Anise as sophisticated and daring and acting as a mirror of our secret selves is compelling. It’s all the more astonishing that this was accomplished using natural perfumery. Would love to try this! MD, USA.

  • The scene painted are so vividly, and the journey sounds utterly romantic! But I think I”m happiest to know that the perfume is created responsibly and sustainably. I live in the USA.

  • Extremetraveler says:

Danu has a way with words… I doubt I’ll ever again smell anise or make it through a glass of Ouzo without daydreaming of a clandestine secret life.
This sounds alluring to say the least – I’ve looked hard to find the perfect anise fragrance, and sometimes hopelessly followed road signs to dead ends (Clementine California, I just never could find that elusive hint of anise in the mid… sigh)
But this, with a cocoa and tobacco (and black currant) seem like the perfect bouquet to compliment this elusive spice. OK, USA

  • This was a beautifully written review of Black Anise, and was really fun to read. I’m really interested in the Star Anise and how it blends with the darkness that Danu describes in his review and the impact cocoa has on it. From TX, USA.

  • There must be something about it that this fragrance provokes such poetry. As a more prosaic person I say: star anise, yes please! I ordered the first Abel sample set very early a few years back and liked all of them especially Grey Labdanum, so I’d love to win Black Anise to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • AromaDulce73 says:

    Star Anise…”alluring truth”…interesting

Cocoa & Tobacco in the notes sounds delicious. Wouldn’t mind trying this out.

    Los Angeles California USA

  • What a mysterious and seductive sounding fragrance! I love anise and also tobacco and amber, so the combination of the three should be a thrill to my senses. Definitely something to wear when up to no good.
    Commenting from the EU.
    Thanks!

  • From Danu’s review of Abel Black Anise, it appears to be a mysterious scent, different from what one would expect. I don’t think I have smelled an anise in a perfume, so I would love to try Abel Black Anise. Glad that this is also 100 % natural perfume. Only 3 listed notes, and I am curious to see how this simple but lavishly praised perfume smells like. In continental USA.

  • Great review by Danu here.
Even thought this is the first time I read or hear something about thea brand Abel, it seems so promissing, especially Black Anise.
I really love that the brand is a 100 Percent Natural house, just amazing. I also love that Black Anise has tabbaco in it and it is a very sophisticated fragrance. Just wow

  • wandering_nose says:

Based on Danu’s transcendental review, to say that Black Anise is a transportative and mysterious creation, feels like a criminal understatement. To live through moments and feelings like the ones Danu puts before our minds’ eyes would be a dream of every human alive, but to have a perfume participate as one of the main protagonists seems like an ultimately otherworldly experience. Walk me out beyond the edges of my perceptions, I willingly embrace the fall.” I like the way Danu pinpoints how Black Anise if a perfect example of nominative determinism, including its Latin name, and that nothing will ever be the same after one experiences its charms. And with notes like those, being charmed is a given. Big thank you from the EU

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Oh my goodness. This sounds absolutely wonderful. I almost get a complex simplicity with the creation. This is one I MUST get my nose on. The notes are calling my name.
    USA

  • Since learning of Abel’s newest release, I was greatly intrigued as I love star anise in fragrance. However, after reading Danu’s beautiful review of the fragrance my interest has reached a new level. Danu’s writing is beautiful and poetic. The following sentence is what really draws me in:

“Nothing is ever the same anymore, that scent remains indelible under skin, untouchable. Eyes will forever see with this new vision tinted in this perfume.”

Based on the notes, I assumed I would like Black Anise. I love star anise, cocoa, and tobacco; the addition of blackcurrant sounds quite beautiful, as well. I would love the opportunity to own a bottle of Black Anise, which I am sure I would very much enjoy.

Thank you, Danu, for the excellent review, and thank you to Frances Shoemack for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • Thanks for the article Danu!

Black Anise sounds like an aluring, mysterious fragrance with many facets. I won’t lie, this really piqued my interest!

You really know how to set the atmostphere and was able to completely visualize the experience. I can only hope to be able to translate my personal experience as eloquent as yours.

I was reading this with my partner and for her the Cacao and Tobacco were enough to win her over too! Double points!

We look forward to trying this!
    Greetings from the UK!

  • I adore the star anise notes and the natural perfumery in general. This scent sounds great. From EU.

  • Beautiful, poetic review, Danu. I feel like I don’t see overt star anise notes too often, though it’s sharp, distinct odor seems like a perfect fit for aromatic or spicy fragrances. (Christophe Laudamiel’s Spacewood comes to mind.) Black Anise seems to go a different direction, and it’s combination of cocoa, tobacco, anise, and blackcurrent is both focused and inspired, especially when done with natural materials. This is a really intriguing design and I’d love to try it.

I’m in the contiguous USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

This sounds like a very unexpected fragrance, ‘oh, anise’, you’d say and then ‘the unknown now so familiar’ strikes your senses.
Very intrigueing review, and kudos for keeping the secret, that’s definitely more than I could do :)))
    I live in Europe.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Thank you all for taking the time to read my words. It is an exceptional perfume, good luck to all who commented.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m interested in trying this fragrance. I think that it has an interesting notes listing, and I’m interested to see what those notes are like as natural ingredients. Dana has caused me to think that this company has done something which is very high-quality and unique in the realm of natural perfumery. I can love the smell of anise, so I think that I would like this fragrance. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Well written beautiful review by Danu as the experience of Black Anise scent profile of Star Anise, tobacco, Blackcurrant and Cacao sounds to be hypnotic and alluring. I am truly intrigued by the notes and would imagine that they are exceptionally well blended. Thanks for such an awesome giveaway! Greetings from the USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I love a perfume that can turn you inside out, as Danu eloquently wrote. Black Anise definitely sounds daring and evocative of the many secret selves we all have. I love that this fragrance is 100% natural. The star anise and black currant notes sound very alluring.
    I live in the USA.

  • The combination of Star Anise, Blackcurrant, Cocoa, and Tobacco notes promises a non-sweet and fresh gourmand scent, which is quite rare to find. As someone who loves spices, I am particularly drawn to this fragrance. My first experience with this brand was with Vhite Vetiver, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a blind buy for me, and I was not disappointed. I love the refreshing bitterness it offers. Thank you from DE, USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice writeup Danu. I’m reminded of L’Instant de Guerlain EdP.

I do love the note of anise in a fragrance. It adds a wonderfully seductive, cool and interesting quality, that is in some way more sophisticated than licorice. The use of blackcurrant, cocoa and tobacco just adds to the way that all these notes can play and enhance each other. The fact that this is an all natural fragrance is impressive.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Very interesting review! What appeals to me about Abel Black Anise based on Danu’s review is how she describes it as an “X-rated” natural fragrance. I love dangerous, hypnotic, and alluring fragrances and I particularly love natural fragrances as well, so this sounds like it has great potential for me. I live in the US.
