House Of Matriarch Toukka Ta Tao (Christi Meshell) 2017~ New Perfume Review + Fantasy Island Draw

It may be too early to start dreaming of a winter getaway, but you can start planning your traveling perfume wardrobe to accompany you. House Of Matriarch’s new limited edition perfume called Toukka Ta Tao, will most definitely be in my bag. A collaboration between Christi Meshell and Bangkok-based perfume blogger Timmy Vangtan, Toukka Ta Tao is a gorgeous and complicated vacation in an ocean blue bottle with a sun-tanned coppery cap.

House of Matriarch Perfumer Christi Meshell

The inspiration for this perfume is Koh Tao a small island in the Gulf of Thailand approximately 400 km. due south of Bangkok. Christi Meshell writes, “Koh Tao (Turtle Island) in Thailand is famous for its surrounding coral reef. Toukka Ta Tao perfume is a "tropical get-away" ambiance perfume, the result of a blend of 129 individual notes. Layered fruits, flowers, spices, tinctures, and my exclusive special "beach musk" accord. Accented by notes of lilikoi, plai, kava and sesame, the dream of this fragrance is shared by many around the world – it is the scent of ‘Swimming with turtles’”.

When I first visited Koh Tao in 1990 it was a virtually untouched tropical paradise with just a handful of wooden bungalows fronted by blindingly white beaches and water of electric Cyan blue. At that time the only way to get there was a four hour ferry ride from the nearby bigger island of Koh Samui at that time a sleepy off-the-beaten-path backpacker’s destination, then the next day hiring a longtail boat to make the four to five hour trek to Koh Tao.

Koh Tao is the quintessential Thai island, with a green jungled interior and ringed with stunning turquoise bays surrounded by limestone karsts, multi-storied rock columns shooting up out of the water like mineralized explosions. Caves to explore, magnificent diving complete with the eponymous sea turtles and vivid tropical fish, Koh Tao was and is a sultry and torrid wet dream, the pinnacle of perfection for tropical islands.

In capturing the essence of a tropical island getaway, perfumer Christi Meshell has created a minor miracle, the liquid and fragrant sin qua non of beach scents that eschews the usual tooth-shattering sweetness of a Piña Colada inspired perfume, for something more earthy, hot sand-like, and green.

Toukka Ta Tao opens with an unctuous melange of a Southeast Asian fruit salad comprised of perfumed litchi, astringent citrusy passion fruit, and sweet buttery mango, but quickly moves into a jungle-like bright green of coconut palm trees, and the fibrous, dusty and pulpy vapors emanating from Kava-Kava mixed with Marigold.

It is both intoxicating and beautifully familiar. Underneath all this tropical greenness is the singular hot sand silicate scent of beach overlaid with the salty, metallic-tinged breath of sea water.

In the crowded genre of beach-scent and tropical inspired perfumes House of Matriarch's Toukka Ta Tao is one of the finest, a stunning photorealistic breath of a moment in time spent lying on the hot sand of a fantasy island.

Perfumer’s Note: “In reverence of our connection to the matriarch that is Mother Ocean, and to honor the beautiful reef of Ko Tao, House of Matriarch will be donating 10% of sales from this limited edition perfume to the Coral Reef Alliance.”

Notes: Litchi, Mango, Artemisia, Davana, Kava-Kava, Passionfruit, Marigold, Vanilla, Tuberose, Frangipani, Plai (Thai Ginger), Sea Notes, Palm Frond Accord, Sandalwood, Coconut, Ambergris, Tolu Balsam, Oudh, Musk, Myrhh, Ylang-Ylang, Jasmine Sambac, Tonka Bean and Sesame.

Disclosure: Thank you so much to Christi Meshell for supplying the sample. The opinions are my own.

Beach overlaid with the salty, metallic tinged breath of sea water!!
Beautiful review, the trek to the island is an adventure in itself!!
I have many of Christi’s perfumes, have known the House of Matriarch for quite a while, and they are all amazing, if I had to choose a favorite, as hard as it will be, I choose Kazimi the Blue Rose! It is my magical place.
    I am in the USA.

  • DavidMidecem says:

I love the connection Roberts makes between the perfume and the island and how each ingredient makes up the final visual he has about the fragrance. My fantasy tropical beach would have aquamarine water and pink sand and warm breeze. I’ve smelled all fragrances by House of Matriarch and my favourite has to be Kazimi. It is my #1 fragrance of all time and my signature scent. Thank you for the draw. I live in Alberta, Canada!

  • Lovely review! I loved the colorful imagery used in the review. It transports me to the idea of Matriarchs Beach Paradise… My fantasy tropical beach has bright blue-green waters where whales and dolphins play together surrounded by large rock caves on the shore with waterfalls to discover. My favorite Matriarch scent is theI Longing. Thank you for the opportunity!!! I’m in usa,

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Wow, what a mix of fantastic tropical notes! Sounds like the ultimate fantasy beach scent, which I would wear on a deserted quiet, white sand beach in a secluded bay rimmed with palm trees. I need a vacay! So far, I have only experienced Coco Blanc from this house, and it was lovely. I live in the US.

I like that Robert here has described an atypical tropical fragrance. I do enjoy tropical fragrances, but I find that so many of them smell the same. I like the idea of a unique fruit salad, not just a “tropical” mashup of a sour undistinguishable mess. My fantasy tropical beach should be secluded – it just needs to be clean and not have any people! I haven’t tried a House of Matriarch fragrance, but I am looking to buy some samples soon. I am in the US.

  • My wife pushes me to spend holidays in Thailand together and indeed I am intrigued by those pictures of words and photos. But that won’t happen as long as we spend our money on perfume! Can this one be the combination of both? (We’re living in Switzerland.)

  • Tropical fragrances are notoriously sweet or coconutty, but the description of this one sounds like this one is different from others in the genera. The notes listed contain many of those I would hope to find in a fine tropical scent. Sounds perfect or very near to my ideal!

I have been to my fantasy tropical beach and would love to return some day. Aitutaki is a beautiful coral atol in the northern Cook Islands. One of the motus (small islands around the atol) is know as One Foot Island. When I was there in the 90s a small outboard motorboat could be hired to take you there for a tailgate style bar-b-que and short day visit. If you would ask they would leave you alone over night to sleep on a tiny deserted island in a grass shack that had a flat wooden floor. The white sand and the crystal blue water was teaming with amazing fish, including a couple of rays playing in the still water. Ahhh… I have seen paradise.

I live in the Pacific NW, USA!

  • I haven’t been to Thailand yet, so it was interesting to learn about and about this particular turtle island. I have many House of Matriarch loves, my first bottle of The Maj stays a personal favorite. My dream beach would be Tahiti or the Easter island and to practice Polynesian dances wearing a Lei.
It’s great that Christi gives the donation for the coral reefs!
Thanks for the draw and review.
    I live in Germany.

  • It looks like Toukka Ta Tao is a tropical, fruity punch. So delicious that you can say it is a tropical cocktail. I am very curious about this one as I do not have much experience with exotic fragrances, but from the notes it really seems to be quite a hit! My favourite from this house is Bohemian Black. I live in EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love that Robert uses the word unctuous in his description of Toukka Ta Tao. My favorite fantasy beach would be the one in the alien trip at the end of the movie Contact. My favorite HoM perfume is so hard to pick as I own and love many of them, but I would have to say Destrier has taken over the top spot (next would be Kazimi and third Antimony) I live in the United Kingdom.

  • What appealed to me the most is the back story of the island paradise that is the inspirational theme for Toukka. I love the exotic, tropical note breakdown of this fragrance and the description of them is also appealing in the review. The black sands of Hawaii would be my fantasy beach. Coco Blanco is my favorite HoM.. I’m in the US. Thank you so much.

  • H how I long to smell the sand. Here in Kansas, as you can imagine, there is no sand for miles. My tropical dream vacation is a small hut or cabin that looks rustic, but has all the modern amenities. And this is steps from a small, private, natural lagoon.

Have you been to one of those “private islands” that major cruise lines have? With the beaches made of sand over concrete? People everywhere, and maintenance vehicles. That is the opposite of my tropical island dream.

    I am in the US

  • His memory of the Thai Island makes me wants to visit it.

    I don’t have a favorite HoM perfume.

Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada.

  • I am very curious how House of Matriach does a tropical beach scent, especially one that is different from most. I would love to time travel back to a beach in the South Pacific before the islands were “discovered”. Orca is still my favorite. USA.

  • Wow, I’d love to smell what “beach musk” smells like! This fragrance sounds intoxicating!!

I’d love to go to the beaches in Cannes, France.

My fave House of Matriarch fragrance is Coco Blanc.

    I live in the U.S.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

Thank you Robert for a great review. I love island life, so much so that our home has 15 palm trees lining the backyard. So in the note breakdown, “Palm Frond Accord”, as well as all the tropical inspired fruits listed immediately caught my attention. So did Christi Meshell’s mention of her special “Beach Musk” accord. The pictures are great, and I especially like the picture of Koh Tao Turtle island, and the sexy photo of Kate Moss, which engenders memories of amazing island vacations. Hey, I proposed to my wife on the island of Kauai! One of my favorite beaches is Poipu beach on Kauai. Kapalua beach on Maui is also wonderful. Of the House of Matriarch, the amazing rose blend in Kazimi captures my imagination the most. I live in San Jose, California.

  • Well now I have another destination to add to my international travels wish list. Koh Tao 🙂 I love tropical beaches and most regularly spend time near them in Belize. I would love more isolation in my ideal tropical beach location. Im interested to see how some of these tropical notes blend. I think this is the first fragrance Ive seen that has Kava Kava as a note:) My favorite HoM fragrances are Sex Magic and Coco Blanc.
    I live in the USA

  • I missed this one when in was a a four hour special…. I wanted it sooo bad.
This one sounds absolutely heart warming from the back side with a little sand on the bumm 🙂 I’ve been looking forward to a tropical getaway, which is not easy when you live in the desert. Thanks for the awesome review… and I love swimming with the turtles…

  • Amazing review! This perfume sounds incredible fabulous. I would be very glad If I would win. (I have my birthday today 🙂 ) My fantasy island would looks similar as Koh Tao Turtle Island in Thailand Beach. My favorite House Of Matriarch fragrance is Coco Blanc. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Jitterbug Perfume Lover says:

I went to Tortuguero in Costa Rica and witnessed the giant tortoises crawling on the sand to give birth. We had to go at midnight and wear all black and not make a single peep so as not to frighten them. It was one of the most magical experiences of my life. I think about those tortoises sometimes because they have such a long lifespan, and it reminds me that whatever problems I have are just temporary, and that my life is short in comparison so I better make the best of it.

I love that one of my favorite perfumers has thought to create a perfume in honor of the tortoise. Coco Blanc is my favorite gourmand of all time, so I can’t even imagine how good this one is. Just reading the notes made me salivate, and Roberts description of the island and the tropical fruit salad put me over the top!

I also really love the fact that a portion of the proceeds are going to protect the fragile coral reefs. What a beautiful thing to do. Thanks for the chance! ~Linda

  • NiceVULady says:

I love the imagery. I've sniffed Devotion and thought it was beautiful. As to fantasy beaches, I really don't have one. So much of beach property now belongs to private owners, which is very sad for the rest of us. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • 50footRingo says:

Greetings from Canada. Huge fan of this house and you’ve certainly sold me on this latest release with that incredible description. Hard to pick a favorite from HoM — love Black No. 1, Kazimi, and Coco Blanc equally. Awesome giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • A blend of 129 individual notes? Oh my, that’s a lot! The description does justice to the photo by Bahn’s Diving Resort and it sounds lovely.
My fantasy island would be close to Koh Tao, it should include lots of palm trees, wild beaches, clear water and a beautiful blue sky.
Haven’t tried anything from HoM…I live in Europe.

  • What I love about Roberts review is his accurate rendition of that wonderful asian tropical getaway experience. It’s got all the sensations that go with it as well 🙂 I’m in tune with this part of our planet- warm, rich in culture and food is unbelievable. Hospitality of the people out of this world-my fantasy beach however lies in Greece, where the waters are clear, no predators to enagae with and one walks that pathway along the cliff to descend into paradise. I’d put some coconut palms there however, fresh coconut water is a must for hydration whatever fantasy you’re engaged in 🙂 heard so much about Christi’s work- still not managed to try yet but her reputation precedes her. Living currently in New Zealand. Thank you for the worldwide draw.

  • Hope, that there is no durian note among these 129 notes 🙂 But seriously I love Thailand, and the scent inspired by Thai island could be very interesting.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

A swimming with turtles scent? And “earthy, sand-like and green.” And “dusty.” These speak my language. Thank you for including a map! I’m not very familiar with this corner of the world and seeing a map really helps me get my bearings and understand better the inspiration for this beautiful-sounding perfume. Trillium is my favorite HoM perfume, though Bohemian Black is up there as well. Any tropical beach sounds lovely to me. Thank you for the review, and for the generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • What a beautiful imagery! If the fragrance smells like the island, and from the review it seems to be pretty close, then it’s going to be amazing! I’m reading all the time here about the House of Matriarch, but I haven’t had the chance to try any. Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Great read!Imagine the essence of a tropical vacation captured in a bottle……House of Matriarch Toukka Ta Tao is the result of a blend of 129 individual notes and special note of “beach Musk”……amazing! It is the scent of “Swimming with the turtles………My favorite House Of Matriarch fragrance is Black No 1. Koh Tao resort & beach is now my favorite for vacation.
Thanks to Christi Meshell and House Of Matriarch for the generosity & CafleureBon for the opportunity.

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

Met Timmy, the collaborator of this fragrance in Vegas just last month. He is Thai but Vegas-based now who used to be in Alaska till his relocation to sin city. Roberts rendetion and imagery of tropical getaway is quite facinating. Eager to have my nose in this. San Diego

  • Breathingmybelovedin says:

As always Robert conjures vivid imagery to successfully convey the feeling that Christie’s artwork engenders. Madagaskar is a destination I have been yearning to visit for years. Would sampling HoM’s tropical blend transport me to an idyllic island? I would love to find out! Thank you Christie and CFB for this opportunity. I am in Israel.

  • Oh! This is right up my alley. I just got married in Thailand too! I would love to be laying in the sand on Koh Samui, or Sharm el Sheikh, or anywhere it is sunny with clear blue water with good snorkeling! I love Robert’s review, because I love Robert to death! And he always writes with such vivid descriptive imagery I really feel like I went somewhere. My favorite scent I have tried by Christi is Coco Blanc – wow that’s good stuff! Thanks for this chance – I live in Maryland.

  • Hi what appealed to me about review was when i read the article i came to the part where the notes were, wowza !,sounds amazing would love to win this,my favourite H.O.M fragrance is kazimi ,and as for fantasy beach would be the location where the filmed the movie “the beach” with leo dicaprio thnx for review and giveaway .

  • doveskylark says:

This review made me think of how much I enjoy planning my fragrance wardrobe when I travel. I’m intrigued by the hot sand note in this fragrance. My idea of a tropical paradise would be the island of Fernando de Naronha in Brazil.
I haven’t tried anything from this line, but I’d like to try Sex Magic.
    I live in the USA.

  • Wow! Thank you all so much for the kind words, and the mouth-watering descriptions of your fantasy islands and beaches!! I love reading your comments!! Xoxo Robert

  • 129 individual notes!? AMAZING!!! Everything about this perfume sounds fantastic and it is quite hard for me to imagine how it all can sound together. My fantasy paradise island could be everywhere where is warm sea and good-smelling woods. But I wouldn’t mind at all the bottled paradise island. This summer was too short here, the birds are already flying to South and i feel melancholic. This review gave me some vitamins for life and hope to visit such beautiful places one day. Thank you! I live in the EU.
