Yesterday was International Yoga Day (it was also National Selfie day, so figure that).  Truly for me, every morning starts with sun salutations, so dedicating just one day may bring awareness but the benefits of a daily practice for your mind, body and soul is immeasurable. Throughout history, given by some sources as dating back from 1700 BC, yoga has been incorporated into different cultures which originated in ancient India. Yoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the west. Indra Devi, opened her yoga studio in Hollywood in 1947.

Since then, many more western and eastern teachers have become pioneers, popularizing hatha yoga and gaining millions of followers. Hatha Yoga now has many different schools or styles, all emphasizing the many different aspects of the practice and draws in different people, from all areas of life.

It has been embraced by the author Colette, Brigitte Bardot, Gloria Swanson, Sigmund Freud, Marilyn Monroe and David Bowie and many more. All were practitioners.

I began yoga after 9/11, overwhelmed by the reoccurring  nightmares, and daymares, where I could not stop my thoughts,   the images and memories I still have of that horrific day. Before yoga I had difficulty breathing. It began to impact my ability to function at work. Fortuntately,  I met a young woman, Sandra Olic who became my yogini and slowly over the next few years I began to heal. Exactly, at the same time in 2001, a good friend Dennis Ingui was recuperating from surgery for prostrate cancer.  Soon after, he attended a local yoga class and began a daily practice.  A former marketing and fashion executive, he now owns Aurorae Yoga which is Amazon’s number one brand for yoga accessories; he is going strong and is a cancer survivor.

One of my first  perfume collaborations was with Jane Hendler of Ajne. We co created Lakshmi; Lakshmi is a Hindu deity, the goddess of abundance, beauty and prosperity. She is most often associated with the heart. My personal mantra invokes her grace.   Over the past few years, some of my dearest friends and loved ones have endured serious illnesses or have passed away. Yoga helps me live in the ‘now’, especially since I am prone to “monkey mind” and insomnia; both yoga and daily exercise have been invaluable tools in stabilizing my emotions and living in balance.

For my first article in a ÇaFleureBon series I am dubbing FIT, FAB AND FRAGRANT, I turned to Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics, a well-known natural perfumer from Berlin, the winner of the 2014 Art and Olfaction Artisan Award for Calling All Angels is a former model, and a yoga teacher who studied with many of the world’s masters.

Tanja’s natural perfumes have been written about extensively on CaFleureBon since 2011 ( Former Editor Ida Meister did the first reviews) but it most dear to me is our collaboration to raise money for Tama Blough  with the perfume San Francico Rose; Tama bravely fought and lost her battle with cancer of the  bile ducts last year on January 9, 2015.  Indra Devi is Tanja Bochnig’s spiritual name, given to her by her teacher. I asked her to share some of her wisdom as yoga is for everyone, each at their own level, for the young, and for the old. –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

The main goal of yoga, is to help us to prepare for meditation, (to be able to become still) and eventually lead us into “Samadhi”, (a state of bliss, free beyond physical attachments).

Here are some of the more popular styles of yoga:L

 Hatha (focuses mainly on the physical postures)

 Vinyasa (means body movement, flowing with breath)

 Ashtanga (Ashtanga means eight limbs or branches of yoga, the physical exercises are just one part of this yoga style. Practicing meditation, breathing and awareness are other parts. This style is great for men, since it involves stong physical movements, it is also the yoga style Michelyn practices)

Iyengar (The development of strength, mobility and stability)

Kundalini (The yoga of awareness, raising the life force energy, (kundalini), chanting, breathing, etc.

I began a daily yoga practice over 20 years ago, studied with many different yoga masters and learned various styles of yoga. But eventually I created my own and did the practice that felt right for my body. Using the healing power of the plants and essential oils alongside my practice, led me to create AROMAYOGA.

The aim of Yoga in its classical sense is to aid the practitioner in the attainment of their divine plan.  Originally, various exercises were developed over the centuries to perfect the body through physical flexibility (asana), vitality, cleansing, and a special breathing exercise system (pranayama). Then came varied exercises of mental control and concentration, focused on the quest towards moral evolution. The ancient sages (rishis) of India recognized that a perfect body and a purified mind were the necessary conditions to achieve the greatest goal of yoga, enlightenment (Samadhi). Meditation on the seven main energy centers (chakras) in our body was and still is one of the most important practices to achieve this lofty goal. -Tanja Bochnig

Sacral-“sexuality and pleasure”. Located in our groin, people who have their sarcal chakra out of balance may have self esteem issues and may not think that they’re desirable. Often they have difficulty opening up in a relationship. They can lose desire for sex.

Root: “Career, security, and Money” Located in the base of the spine,  if this chakra is out of balance you may feel “stuck in a rut”, unsatisfied with your job and lack energy.

Solar Plexus: “Personal Power and  Willpower” Located in the spleen, liver and stomach. If this chakra is out of balance you may be quick to anger, have self-esteem issues and feel powerless

Heart Chakra: “Love and Open to Giving”. If the heart chakra is out of balance you may have difficulty loving, sabotage your relationships, or  are guarded.

Throat Chakra: “Communication” When this is blocked you may find it difficult to express yourself and are afraid to speak up if you disagree with others.

Third Eye Chakra: “Intuition and  Open to New Ideas” The third eye is located at the center of your forehead and for millenia it has been asscociated  with the ability to “see the future”. Actually you aren’t seeing it, you are opening to  things that can’t be  rationally explained.

Crown:  “Connection to the Divine”   Located at the crown of your head. Often in a yoga class you bow to your teacher and fellow practitioners and say “May the Divine light in me, Honor the Divine light in you”.  Your crown chakra may be weak if you feel disassociated with others and  with yourself. You can over rationalize.

The seven chakras are the spiritual control over our entire body. Your foundation is a series of different nerve plexuses and important endocrine glands, which are located at regular intervals on the body’s central axis. They have a three point entry angle from the back and open up similarly on the front part of the body to release, creating an apparent back to front direction of energy flow. Comparable to the meridians, but to an even stronger measure, the flow points of the chakras on the body surface provide the perfect position for the simple and effective use of essential oils. Chakras are not physical in origin, but are concentrated in the energy sectors of our spiritual bodies. Through long years of studying the relationships of certain trees, shrubs and flowers with the different energy centers, I  was able to develop an appropriate oil mixture for each chakra.

Aromas are ethereal and have a highly sensitive impact on the world of our emotions. Places with a pleasant scent elevate the mind and soothe us.  As light represents the essence of seeing, and sound is the basis of hearing, aromas and various ethereal scents affect our sense of smell, and stimulate us in many ways. The catalytic effect of scent is used with intention in Aroma Yoga.  Aroma Yoga succeeds only with humble gratitude to the many gifts of the flora, and employs this power in the search for the highest good and advancement of the soul. There is a saying: “What we surround ourselves with determines who we are and what we are.” We will be one with the scent of the divine garden of unconditional love. We will rise into the world beyond the five senses and the limitations of ego-perception. Let us celebrate the union with our divine self. Then we will understand yoga.

  • I took my first yoga class on the football field of my high school when I was 15. Yeah, of course, I lived in a hippie-California town. I have been doing yoga, off and on, since then. And, I am almost 60. Sheesh, time flies!!
    I have a tendency to choke and cough, and I have often wondered if that is a sign of Throat Chakra is a bit ‘stuck’.

  • Lovely article! I’m happy to read anything that informs folks that yoga isn’t just another fitness tool. “Yoga means union.” It is a spiritual practice.

    I LOVED the photos of Tanja! You are beautiful in and out. Great article, but seeing the lovely photos will be the most memorable part for me.

    I studied yoga and bodywork at The Kripalu center. Yoga and meditation are an integral part of my life. And so is fragrance!

    Excited about these oils – very healing! I have been quite ill for a while and am so low in energy, so I could use help with my root chakra.

    I didn’t know that David Bowie practiced yoga! I would love more articles about physical and spiritual fitness and how they relate to fragrance.

  • I loved hearing about celebrities through time that have done yoga. So interesting! I used to do yoga often, but have fallen off the wagon the last few years. It felt great! I’ve been meaning to start up again. I guess the chakra I’d like help with is the third eye. I wouldn’t mind a little bump in intuition. I live in Canada, thank you.

  • I practice ashtanga about 5 days a week, but feel I need help with all my chakras, lol. Especially my root chakra. I consider the practice a meditation, but also try guided meditations when I feel I need to. Thanks for the draw, I’m in Canada. 🙂

    In the past I wanted to do yoga, but the lack of space always put my yoga meditation at end from the very start. Also, living in a small city with no access to a yoga master means that I have to do everything on my own, which would be quite hard. Perhaps, in the future, if there arises the opportunity then I will take advantage of it. I love Tanja’s creations and I would love to test these oils.

If I would practice yoga or meditation, I thing I may need a little help with Root: “Career, security, and Money”, Throat Chakra: “Communication” because I think I may need to improvement my communication.   • After a 6 month break I recently started practicing yoga again. Almost immediately I felt the calming and control that yoga practice seems to give me. I’m still working on the part where my tired old joints start flowing and moving more freely. Right now I am practicing Vinyasa style but I’ve done many. I like the idea of different fragrance to zero in on different chakras. I’m thinking maybe my solar plexis needs work. I live in the USA.

  • Firstly, a wonderful addition to the CFB line up of articles! Fitness, health and aroma can be intertwined, are intertwined, if we choose to pursue that path!

    Intrinsically, Tanja’s work, both in the Chakra Collection and throughout her offerings, are of the highest quality raw materials and infused with the joy and light Tanja brings to everything she encounters. Having worked with her through the articles I have written for CFB and our subsequent conversations, I understand her desire to be of service to the planet and its people is genuine and pervasive.

    This collection represents an invitation to experience aroma in a different way, to engage with yourself in a healing modality and obviously to assuage anyone who should happen to be in olfactory range.

    The chakra system is an accessible way to engage your subtle self without any conflict with other spiritual or religious beliefs, and is scientifically provable, although they may use different terminology. It was one of my first formal teachings,although I, personally, to do not subscribe to any ONE path.

    Meditation and yoga have been a part of my practice since I was 14, studying Richard Hittleman’s techniques. I think it’s worth pointing out that meditation does not require sitting in lotus position until you squirm. Long distance running or walking can be a meditation. Finding the form, active or inactive, makes the idea of meditation more approachable.

  • Thank you for this article. I think it is going to help me start practicing meditation again, after having a very long break. My life became quite difficult recently and it is time to do something good for myself. As for chakras, I need more energy and internal power, so I would need strenghtening solar plexus chakra. I am in the EU.

  • So great to see yoga here! The photos featuring Tanja are beautiful. I started at 16, it was an option for gym class. I continued practicing regularly (mostly Hatha) until a car accident at 26. Nothing broken but afterwards I couldn’t practice in the same way due to muscle spasms. Back to being a beginner! Now I do mostly restorative, which gives me much-needed deep relaxation. I would like to be less guarded in relationships, which is a heart chakra issue. I am in the USA.

  • Wonderful article and the pictures are beautiful. I have tried yoga with my daughter 2x /week for awhile, and i think it helps with my flexibility and helpl us bond over doing something good for ourselves. I cannot do some of the poses I used to do when I was younger, so I just go as far as I can, and breathe. I probably need help with all chakras. I would like to experience these fragrances.

    I personally not practicing yoga but aware of it because of the region where I am living. The yoga basics, poses, postures, meditation techniques & therapy on watching inspiring, so definitely practically practicing will be more fun. I like the padmasana pose but my root chakra is weak.

  • I loved this article. I do sun salutation several times in the morning before my walk just to stay flexible. Then I try to stay more ‘in the moment’ during my walks and call that a walking meditation. In the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Yoga & Meditation has been a mainstay for me for much of my life. I tend to connect very deeply to people and situations that are screaming out to the universe for help and hope. I am in no way an expert, I partake daily for the balance and clear headedness it brings to me. I have experienced AromaYoga’s oils and love them.. so much so that I have shared kits with several friends in desperate need. Loved this article and Thanks ladies for doing it.

    I’ve done a little yoga, and a little more meditation. Both are impactful for me, but I still struggle to find time to make them part of my routine. My root chakra could do with a little help. Love the idea behind these, and believe that aroma is a key stimulator for elevation of the chakras. I am very curious to know what is in each blend! Tania, the presentation of this set is beautiful!   • great initiative! i practised yoga and meditation (and was a tibetan buddhist nun for a time) until i became bed bound — i still practice meditation daily and particularly like reggie ray’s somatic approach to enlightenment through the body, not by transcending it. tanja’s perfumes add to this awakening by assisting us to become fully embodied. i have tried all her perfumes except the chakra ones, so i’m naturally curious. my first chakra to be off was the root, but now they’ve all seemed to follow suit, so any/all would apply! thanks for bringing greater awareness about yoga and potions to the masses that can benefit.

  • Yes to yoga for me, it has helped me feel well throughout my adulthood. I sometimes have shoulder pain which always improves when I stretch. I am often reluctant to speak up, so I need to think about my throat chakra. I am in the US. I loved seeing Tanja’s yoga portraits and being reminded that scents can be used with intention to bring benefits beyond their beauty. I do rely on experts for help with fitness. My first yoga teacher teacher was named Miriam and she was 71 years old when I met her.

  • I have practiced yoga and I still do twice a week because it really feels nice while doing so and after the session is over! I love the inner peace and sense of balance it gives you.
    I felt like I need help with all my chakras since I believe that all together function and are interrelated.

  • Great article and very inspiring! I suffer with Fibromyalgia and CFIDS and have practiced Hatha yoga for years. I must say that If I don’t do it, I would’t be able to walk or do minute daily task. My rheumatologist suggested it to me and it has been a Godsend. Honestly, I feel like all of my chakras are a malfunctioning right now and could use some help! Michelyn and Tanja I have been thinking for a while about getting my certification to become a yoga teacher in 2017 and because of both of you I have just added that to my vision board.   • I have practised many forms of yoga since I was a teenager including devotional forms like Bhakti and Siddha Yoga (devotee). I’ve also been a meditation practitioner since teenage yrs and attended Naropa University where practise was central to all study. I’m a dancer, aerial acrobat and Pilates instructor, but after becoming ill and unable to do any exercise or active yoga I have focused on mediation once again and recently am feeling so drawn to restorative yoga. The article inspired me and made me feel so supported in this vision of restorative yoga with chakra oils and meditation combined as healing modalities, a way to feel more embodied. I’ve veered off my usual Buddhist or Hindu meditation and have been enjoying guided practise with chakra visualizations, so I love the pictures of Tanja, rich with colour and somewhat other worldly. I wish I could smell the chakra oils through the screen. I’ve only recently smelled Tanja’s fragrances for the first time and was blown away. Would love to smell the Charka Oils. Probably my root and solar plexus need the most help right now. I’m from Toronto, Canada.

Never tried yoga before, but if it comes with pretty scents, I am in!
