August’s Spilled Perfume: “Cherchez La Femme” + Nine Fragrant Prizes

Photo: George Holz

Five years ago, I was told by a prominent perfumer that  75% of all fragrances are created by white, French men (he only met the gender qualifier).  I am not sure if that statistic was accurate but  we had a serious conversation about who is buying fine fragrance and  niche perfumes and only a  tiny percentage are white, male and French! I am fairly certain that our "perfumista" readers would recognize the faces of male perfumers more easily than their female colleagues (many of our readers would recognize his face). Yet, the women below have created many  of the scents which sit on our bureaus or have influenced contempory perfumery.

Try to identify the nine woman perfumers whose photos appear below.

#1

#2 Mane

#3 Robertet

#4 Symrise

#5

#6

#7 Firmenich

#8

#9 "she had me from hello" Givaudaun

I have a feeling that this test will challenge quite a few of you. Maybe in a couple years it won't. There are a few hints and six of the nine women are senior or master perfumers with large Fragrance and Flavor companies.  All nine  are "noses" and  have created niche and designer perfumes we have written about on CaFleureBon.

Our Nine spilled perfume prizes have a common thread…. women perfumers!

Robert Piguet 100 ml of Futur  (Hint)

40notes Perfumes and Miriam Vareldzis Spring Vetiver

L'Artisan Parfumeur for 100 ml Coeur de Vétiver Sacré  by Karine Vinchon Spehner of Robertet

50 ml Cognoscenti #1 by Dannielle Sergent

10 ml lab sample of  Maggie Mahboubian  premier perfume, La Lune de Miel

Christi Meshell 10ml of Alpha by House of Matriarch

Yosh Han 50 ml of Ginger Ciao EDP and 3ml of Sombre Negra (which is back-ordered until November)

 Persephenie Lea of Persephenie Leatherwood

50 ml of Swarovski Edition Sonia Constant of Givaudaun and Pierre Aules

The first  reader to guess the names of all nine perfumers (or the most correct responses) shown in this post  can win two fragrances of their choice.  Even if you cannot guess a single perfumer, you are eligible to win a fragrance just by leaving a comment about your favorite woman perfumer.

 Draw ends September 17, 2012

    Thank you for the draw!!!

  • Boo Hoo, too late… but I wouldn’t have guessed all of them anyway so I’m glad I am given a chance to win anyway!

My favorite perfumer is Olivia Giacobetti (that also happens to be drop dead gorgeous). I would love to win Ginger Ciao as I have never tried anything from Yosh. Thanks!

  • I too am far too late with my guesses but never mind!! 🙂

One of my favourites at the moment is one of my local perfumers ~ Nadia of Alkoomie Perfume House in Oz ~ we’re coming into spring here in Oz and I can’t wait to see how her perfumes work with sun warmed skin! 🙂

Thanks for such a wonderful draw!

    Holly

  • Yes I’m totally too late as well in guessing but I was able to recognize Olivia Giacobetti, my favorite perfumer! I would love to win Spring Vetiver and Ginger Ciao =)

  • Straight away I only recognize Germaine Cellier and Patricia Nicolai.
I wonder whose else’s names I know but don’t know what they look like – now I’ll go and check the answers of people who know. 🙂

  • amberosmanthus says:

I really enjoy Meredith Smith of Sweet Anthem. I keep going back to her little collection of indy perfumes and I enjoy so many of them. One for every mood!

  • I love Mandy Aftel. And a lot of other women perfumers 😛 But on a kick of Haute Claire atm.

I would love to win Ginger Ciao or Spring Vetiver or Leatherwood. Frankly I don’t see any on there that don’t look yummy. 😛

  • Calice Becker is one of my favorites. I’ve learned so much since finding this site about 6 months ago. I recognize many names that are written, but hope to learn names and faces. Thanks for all the wonderful draws!

  • 1. Germaine Cellier
    2. Mathilde Bijaoui
    3. Sidonie Lancesseur
    4. Emilie Copperman
    5. Isabelle Doyen
    6. Patricia de Nicolai
    7. Annie Buzantian
    8. Olivia Giacobetti
    9. Calice Becker

I’m late but no problem at all.
Mandy Aftel’s Cacao is one of my favourite jasmine perfumes. There’s a lot of excelent women perfumers (Vero Kern, Mandy Aftel, Josh, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz…)
I would love to win Ginger Ciao!

    Thank you for the draw

  • i only only know mme. cellier (1) and mme. nicolai (6) by sight. but i find that annie buzantian (7) looks a bit like mona di orio, that is to say: regal.

i would still like to try that spring vetiver 🙂

  • Germaine Cellier would be my fave woman perfumer – epic! But all those ladies pictured are pretty awesome. Would love to win Ginger Ciao EDP or Futur if given the choice.

  • I love that you are celebrating the women of this profession! I am enamoured with Neela Vermeire. I love all three of her scents. Also, during the hot summer months in New York, I have enjoyed Coeur de Vétiver Sacré, which now I know was created by Karine Vinchon Spehner of Robertet. Thank you for the info and the draw.

  • I love the work done by Calice Becker. I would like Coeur de Vétiver Sacré and the Swarovski, or any of the fragrances on the list. thanks for the draw.

  • Darn it! I’m always so late to these ones!
recognized 8. Olivia Giacobetti and 9. Calice Becker right away, remembered reading about 2. Mathilde Bijaoui on CFB, sort of remembered 6. Patricia de Nicolai… But I think you have a really good point about recognizing the men more easily!

No favorites, I have really enjoyed reading about female perfumers on this blog, especially Dr. Covey of Olympic Orchids, Roxanna, Anya McCoy, Joanne Basset, Mandy Aftel, all of natural perfumery fame… I like that many of them come from fields like visual art and enter into perfumery through aromatherapy study. They seem to get that scent really affects people deeply and can be healing.

Also, of course, I greatly admire Mona di Orio.

I would love to be entered int he draw and would be happy to try any of those fragrances! Really interested in L’Artisan Couer de Vetiver Sacre, Alpha, Leatherwood, La lune de miel, whoa they all sound like they smell amazing!

  • Seems like each time I find a new fragrance to love it was done by Olivia Giacobetti, and hers is one of the few names here that I recognize. Thanks for the draw!

  • Too late for the name the perfumer game, and it is so hard to choose a favorite female perfumer. But I think I would probably choose Ineke Ruhland, all things considered. Two of her frags make my top ten right now, so that’s pretty impressive.

  • I have three favorites- Laurie Erickson, Ineke Ruhland and Jessica September Buchanan. I would love to win any of these fragrances 🙂

  • I recognize Germaine Cellier as Mystery woman no 1, one of the first women in perfumes, author of beautiful fragrances. Olivia Giacobetti, Mathilde Laurent and Patricia de Nicolai, Mona Di Orio, Vero Kern, I know them, I smelled their work, even own some of their creations but I do not know their faces! How strange!

  • Hmm. #1 is Coco Chanel, #6 is Patricia Nicolai. That’s all I know for sure. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is probably my favorite female perfumer, with Laurie Erikson of Sonoma Scent Studio running a close second. I would choose Alpha or Cognoscenti #1. Thanks!

  • I don’t know the answer to the perfumers pictured. My favorite woman perfumer would be Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. She has a large offering of fumes, and I would be hard pressed to find one I don’t want. She has been very creative and prolific in the past. I am wondering if her newborn son will slow things down?!

  • 1)Germaine Cellier
    2)Mathilde Bijaoul
    3)Sidonie Lancesseur
    4)Emilie Coppermann
    5)Isabelle Doyen
    6)Patricia De Nicolai
    7)Annie Buzantian
    8)Olivia Jacobetti
    9)Calice Becker

I would love either Piguet Futur or L’Artisan Coeur de Vetiver Sacre. Thanks for a fun draw.

  • I am wearing one of my favorite perfumes by one of the 9 women perfumers shown …cruel intentions by kilian which was created by
    Siddonie Lancesseur
I had no idea what she looked like! Of the women perfumers above I recognized 1Germaine Cellier, 5Isabel Doyen, 6Patricia de Nicolai 8 Olivia Giacobetti only
I would be happy to win any of the perfumes offered

  • So many good women perfumers, how about Neela Vermeire for a favorite today. I would like to win Yosh’s Ginger Ciao. Regards!
