CaFleureBon Profiles in Perfumery: Sabine Hernandez of S. Poncet + Passion for Art Draw

 

 

Profile: I recall my early teenage years, collecting perfume ads, miniature perfumes, and even trying to extract oil from the fragrant flowers in the yard. I remember my Aunt had a dresser filled with the most exquisite scents. Every time I had a chance to visit her, I was drawn to this dresser. Perfumery was my early love and I knew this was the industry I wanted to be part of. I started my career at Marilyn Miglin in Chicago. Marilyn created the classic perfume Pheromone made with 179 ingredients, using mostly natural oils. Her formula is based on an ancient recipe from a Pharaoh’s temple that she uncovered with a team of archeologists and Egyptologists in the 70’s. She is an incredible woman and inspires me.

I like the simple pleasures of life:  eating a homemade dinner and drinking wine by the fire place, walking in a forest in the fall, finding little details that no one sees in paintings, and spending time with my husband and daughter. These memories are captured not only in thoughts, but also in scents. For instance, I believe looking at a landscape, touching things, or listening to your surroundings will trigger some olfactory memories. This is the key idea behind my creating a scent or a new collection of accessories.

  My mother, Claudie, was born in Chateauroux in the “coeur” of France. She was a teacher for 20 years and an artist all her life. She shared her passion for art with my sisters and me.

We spent hours in art museums all over Europe; all the while she would show us the important and hidden details on each work of art. Growing up in this environment, I was influenced by her passion and art became a part of me. That is why all my creations are inspired by art.

 

What does my mother wear? A classique, Eau de Cologne.

My father, Bernard, was born in Germany as my grandfather was stationed there after the Second World War, but his roots are from the Burgundy region of France. He was a pilot in the French Army Air force for 35 years. I always looked at him as if he was Superman. Our family moved every 2 to 3 years and lived all over France. Going from place to place allowed me to grow and mature my sense of smell. Every region of France had its specific scents. Most notably I remember Alsace and the Vosges Mountains for its wild blueberries, in the “Landes Region”, south of Bordeaux, I can recall its unique, wonderful odor of pine tree sap.

I had a wonderful childhood and I am blessed having a wonderful family. We are expecting a baby boy in March.

 


Favorite American artist: I love Grant Wood’s unique style and bubbly landscapes. His art is so much fun, and that is what I like about America. You can make everything fun.

 

On American Perfumery: The US can be proud of its so many great perfumers and perfume houses: Keiko Mecheri, Neil Morris, Yosh, Ulrich Lang, Bond No9, Estee Lauder,and  Marilyn Miglin to name a few. It is an honor for me to be listed among these names, and to share my passion for art and fragrances with perfume connoisseurs.

    I learned of a new fragrance S poncet eau eternelle that I had never heard of as well as Marilyn Miglin pheromone was based on a formula found in a Pharoahs temple

    Oh, how lovely! I did know about Eau Eternelle, but I did not know ANYTHING about the woman who created it. I learned a lot about Sabine, mainly that she is managing the most difficult thing — to be creative and to have deep connections to her family, including parents. Often creative people have roots all over the places, but roots of Sabine are deep and connect her to her family. I am sure her children will be the same.

    Thank you for this lovely draw. I too have a Mother that was an artist and I think that forms us, it allows art to be an integral part of our life. I learned that Sabine in an artist of many kinds, not just perfume. I look forward to trying Eau Eternal. It sounds fascinating. The colors in the scarf are lovely! And as a Pisces, I always love seeing fish depicted in creative ways.

    When I was a kid I was fascinated by Grant Wood because his paintings looked so cartoonish. I’ll throw my hat in the ring for the Eau Eternelle. The scarf reminds me of a sarong that I have with colorful fish and turtles on it. Thanks for the drawing!

    I learned that she is French by birth, and that her experiences living all over different regions of France left scented impressions of the terroir: “Every region of France had its specific scents. Most notably I remember Alsace and the Vosges Mountains for its wild blueberries, in the “Landes Region”, south of Bordeaux, I can recall its unique, wonderful odor of pine tree sap.”

    I also noted that her love of scent began early, and she tried extracting scents from garden flowers (I did this too!) in addition to collecting and to admiring her relative’s perfume collection.
