CaFleureBon: Our Favorite Romantic Fragrances + Valentine’s Day Draw

 Painting: Jarek Puczal

Fragrance can evoke a myriad of different emotions and sensations.  But what scents instantly remind us of all that is Romance- from the fleeting memory of an awkward first kiss to the sensual, heady feeling of free-falling in love. These are the perfumes that captured our hearts.

Illustrator Rebecca Dautremer

Romance is everything that leads to intimacy. As Carly Simon says it is Anticipation. From the flush of initial attraction to the well-choreographed dance of long-time lovers romance is what makes it all worth it .

Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan is Christopher Sheldrake’s animalic triumph. Civet slaps you with a leather glove and then rose and honey draw you close before the heady musc reminds you we are all animals inside.

Calvin Klein Obsession for Men is maybe the first fragrance I truly fell in love with and we have had an ongoing romantic entanglement for almost 30 years. The spice in the heart and the amber, patchouli, sandalwood, and musk finish always make me more confident. Obsession for Men was and is one of my date night fragrances as it mostly brought the women in my life closer.

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt has been my wife’s choice the last few times I’ve asked her what she would like me to wear on a night when it is about her. Since romance should always be about her this has to make the list. The smoky whiskey accord, with a hint of cherry, leads to a much quieter version of the A*Men gourmand base dominated by chocolate and caramel notes

Neil Morris Fragrances FLOWERS FOR MEN “Gardenia” balances green citrus and dry elemi resin, in the opening, to draw you into a lovely heart of creamy gardenia, freshly cut grass and spicy warm hay! The finish of warm myrrh and mysterious oud, along with musk and patchouli, takes you from fresh to floral to woody while remaining masculine throughout! We guys like to get flowers every once in a while too, you know?!? Gardenias have always reminded me of love, and soft caresses from a gentle hand. Thanks to Mr. Morris, these heady blossoms are NOT just for little old ladies anymore!! Fresh and fun, centered on sensual flowers with earthy accents and ending in a sexy oriental smoothness-what’s NOT to love??

Yves Rocher ODE `A L’AMOUR “Passionnement” (Passionately) was a limited edition flanker of the fruity floriental Ode `a L’amour EDT. It focused more on the “spiciness” of love, with notes of pink and Sichuan peppercorns surrounding crisp apples. Golden Mirabelle plums add to the “juicy forbidden fruit” feeling and the finish of musk and vanilla is extremely sensual without getting too “naughty” or carnal. Despite it being marketed to women, it is an amazingly unisex scent that captures not only the feeling of falling in love (without any flowers whatsoever) but the electricity between two people drawn together by the passion in their hearts.

Wing & A Prayer Perfumes COCO SABRA was inspired by a chocolate liqueur the perfumer’s parents used to sip. A sinfully warm and delicious concoction of dark chocolate with fresh and zesty orange  notes infused with just a touch of vanilla that hints of “sweets for the sweet” and evokes images of sweet truffles fed teasingly to the one you love. An amazing scent, in its own right, and it makes an excellent layering scent to add a sweet delicious gourmand feeling to any other perfume.  Jane Cate, the perfumer, cautions that there should be a warning label on this; as it is so very delicious smelling…I agree! What is Valentine’s Day (after all) without some chocolate decadence??!

Valentine’s Day is not my holiday. I haven’t gotten a Valentine from a boy since about the 6th grade, when it was mandatory to give one to every one of your classmates. However, ever the hopeless romantic, I do have some perfume choices that I think are wonderful for the occasion no matter what stage of romance you are in.

A limited-edition wonder of a scent by Ayala Moriel has grabbed my blushing heart and won’t let go. Bouquet of Love is just that: a cacophony of all things floral, wafting like a sweet lover’s offering of wild posies. This scent is for that innocent time of love, the first brush of a hand, the first time your eyes meet, and that giddy nonsensical conversation that always ends in laughter.

An old chestnut and an icon of romance, Chanel No. 5 still holds up. It is glamour, but approachable glamour, like realizing that a beautiful person you are crushing on is sweet, funny and real. Chanel No. 5 is a walk on the beach, a candlelight supper, a shy kiss at the doorway. This is the fragrance to get to know each other by, to explore and imagine, and dream of the future.

The best time of the day is the Blue Hour right before dark, when the sky turns the color I call Maxfield Parrish Blue. Guerlain’s masterpiece L’Heure Bleue is for relaxing by your lover’s side on a loveseat, fingers entwined, looking out at the descending night and just being in each other’s presence. This is the time when tender romance has become true love, and the cares of life are momentarily forgotten

How did I choose my romantic perfumes…  by the indelible memories etched onto my heart long after the last precious drops of their perfume  were gone.

Chinatown, Bond No 9– I read that the flacon was inspired by an ancient Chinese ming vase. There is something about Aurelien Guichard’s composition that evokes both the brightness and the darkness of romantic love. The early stage of Chinatown is sweet and opens with bright notes bursting with peach and bergamot encircled by the lush garden of the heady florals that follow (peony, tuberose, gardenia). But it is the dry down of deep woods that remain.  Chinatown charms dangerously. The song of innocence meets the song of experience.

Montaigne Extrait de Parfum, Caron Fragrances – Created in 1998 by inhouse nose Richard Fraysse, there is a veil of beauty and elegance  that surrounds Montaigne, an air of sophistication and luxury composed of notes of mimosa, coriander, jasmine, daffodil, vanilla and sandalwood. As with all perfumes, do not judge this fragrance by its notes. This is no light-hearted floral, rather Montaigne is as elegant as the street it was named for. I think of my Paris born husband each time I wear it and imagine us strolling down the famed avenue in the 8th arrondisment window shopping after a very French breakfast in bed at the Plaza Athenee. Romance as Couture.

Anvers 2, Ulrich Lang New York – In 2007, I had an imaginary romance with the brooding model on the box before my first sniff, which did not dissapoint. Anvers 2 is a suave masculine scent that knows how to sweep a gal right off her feet. A sweet and fruity start (bright citrus and rhubarb) followed by an extravagant bouquet of florals (bulgarian rose, jasmine and lily)  and an intriguing drydown of oakmoss, olibanum and amber (If you are interested in exploring a  gender bendering fragrance, it is a good one to try). A modern fruity chypre for him (or her) and a brilliant study in the complex and contrasting nature of romantic love.

  • OMG what a super generous draw…thank you to all that donated to this draw and to Cafleurebon for offering these. I will say the Bond No. 9 Chinatown definitely makes my heart flutter…the bottle alone is beautiful. A fun evening with some drinks and a great movie and a nice back rub will put the mood in my step 🙂

  • What puts me in the mood for romance? Walking along a dark but moonlit beach. …suddenly before us, (because I’m not alone )would appear a chilled bottle of French Chamagne, like Treasure washed ashore.. we see a boat with a dark figure aboard who beckons us..and invites us to visit the mysterious galleon moored further out on the horizon. We accept of course, and find ourselves guests at a magnificent party, Dream live music, out of this world food and rooms with lush furnishings, arabian style canopied beds, incense of a mystic nature, hookahs with fragrant substances. We throw off our clothes …..I’m not sharing the rest!

  • Several of these sound delightful, but I’m curious about Mugler’s A Men; I’m not a fan of Angel, but I might be able to warm up to the masculine chocolate. Speaking of chocolate, for a mood-setter you can’t beat chocolate-covered strawberries!

  • kelly szanyi says:

I agree whole heartedly with all of these picks. I need something spicy and sweet to get me out of the winter blues!

  • This post couldn’t have come at a better time.I was looking to buy my DH a scent and it was great to read that quite a few were for men I would probably choose Anvers 2 just because if DH didn’t love it I think I will
What is romantic ?pretending to be on our first date again and recapturing the moment we went from awkward hellos to staring into each others eyes

  • Lael DasGupta says:

As a parent to a 2 year old I must admit that enough sleep sounds romantic! Actually a whole hour alone with my partner and no chores!! Bliss.
Wing & A Prayer Perfumes COCO SABRA sounds exquisite right now, yum!!

  • taffynfontana says:

What I find mood altering is snuggling next to my love and being close enough to smell his sweet scent. Calvin Klein Obsession is one of the few men’s fragrances that to this day gives me butterflies in my stomach and take me back to my first kiss. Fond memories 🙂

  • Would so love the I Love New York! The notes of this sound romantic.. What gets me in the mood,, Coming home and seeing that dinner is cooked, and I don’t have more things to do, and the smiling face of my Husband with those piercing blue eyes… Loved the article and everyone’s choices.. Thanks fir the generous draw. 🙂 Happy Valentine’s Day..

  • What a great collection of scents! The Caron extrait has my heart fluttering…..one of my favorite houses, but I’ve not smelled Montaigne.

  • Not a Botanist says:

Wing & A Prayer Perfumes COCO SABRA sounds the best to me, The insperation of the chocolate drink is interesting.

  • Happiest valentines day to everyone:)
May your day and night be filled with champagne wishes and fragrant dreams!!!
My ideal valentines day would include: bubble bath by scented candle lite, fresh white very high thread count sheets on my rose petal covered bed, chilling champagne, a roaring fire and a night with no kids!
As for reality, I will be at a board or bored meeting and my DH will be at work. We will see each other around ten pm. We will say hello and pass out:)
If I were to get lucky at cafleurebon and be a winner, I would choose Bond 9 I Love New York. I do love new york and I would really like to be able to share my bottle with DH it seems romantic:)

Thanks for this sweet draw. Happy valentines day to all may it be all that you want and much more!

  • Ooh, Chinatown! The more edible the fragrance, the more romantic it seems to me. Maybe I just like food.

  • I have always enjoyed Obsession for men—if a wiff goes past me, I have to hunt it down!!! I always like Shalimar but also would love to own some chanel no. 5

  • The Chinatown bottle is so romantic and so is the fragrance within. The Montaigne also appeals to me because what is more romantic than the French?

  • Lovely reviews, Obsession for men is really one of the best for men. I personally prefer Fahrenheit on my husband whom I deeply love. We try to celebrate love every day and not just on Valentine’s day but it is a good chance to do something special on this day. I love Chinatown and always wanted to own a bottle as I find I to be the prettiest one of them all. Also the promise of blooming floweres in the spring is the image of hope and rebirth and it feels so reviving!
    Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

  • For some reason (yes a long past romance) Oscar de la Renta does it for me, especially the dry down on the pillow the next morning.

Tuberose is another fragrance that I find tremendously seductive and romantic. I would love to win any of the perfumes on offer.

  • What gets me in the mood for romance? My partner doing the dishes. Artisanal ice cream – shared with two spoons. Sharing a flight of wine and a cheese plate. Any of these activities as long as my significant other is wearing TF Tobacco Vanille. I love smelling this fragrance on someone close to me.
What a fantastic drawing. I would love to try the Anvers 2. PS. I also have scent memories of Obsession for men. I remember most of the high school boys wore this at our school dances. It takes me back to 1988 like a time machine.

  • There’s nothing that puts in the mood for love as the smile of a beautiful girl… even better if she’s my girl. Hopefully I’ll find one soon! 😉

  • I like bear hugs. Especially the kind where I get picked up and whirled around (not too impossible, since I am under 5 feet tall). The Ayala Moriel sample intrigues me; I have this urge to collect all her scents. #blush#

  • Of those, it would be Chinatown. Must admit that only memories put me in the mood of romance. It’s sad I know.

  • I fall in a romantic mood everytime I read love poems. Some of them are so perfect that it is really hard not to feel romantic.
From these fragrances, Caron has some of the notes I love.
    Thanks

  • In a romantic mood puts me the song of Leonard Cohen and my love’s moves when we dance. If I were to win I would say yes too any of those, but especially to the Bonds!
    Thanks!

  • What gets me in a romantic mood is of course her. Without her it would not be possible to happen. Things like music, dinner, candles, rose petals are only an addition to her charm. Without her nothing would happen, no magic and no joy.
I would like to win Chinatown because the bottle is gorgeous and because it has tuberose which I love to smell on her.

  • Awaken my senses and I’m in the mood… Whisper in my ear, a kiss on the back of my neck, or wear a thrilling perfume: i’ll be jumping like a tiger!

  • Unfortunatelly me and my boyfriend were a little argument yesterday, so I am a bit sad today, and I am waiting for his call. It would be really nice to win a fragrance to wear it and maybe my boyfriend would love me more…

  • The smell of her hair, kisses on the ear, soft touches… Oh, nostalgia comes back to me whenever I think about her knowing that she is not here. I hope I will win the Caron so I can make it a gift to her when she comes back.

  • Bond No. 9 I Love New York For All is definitely my new favourite fragrance at the moment! Yes, it also garners many compliments which, perhaps, if I was single, just might lead to some romance! Lol

  • 17 years I have been with my hubby and it doesn’t take much to always get me in the mood 🙂 ! I have sampled Chinatown and it is indeed a lovely scent-the bottle is outright gorgeous!

Thanks for the draw and happy Valentine’s Day!

  • Ok, here comes corny: I am always in the mood for romance but any rich white floral on female skin can help enhance it. Makes me wonder if wearing a white floral myself would have any interesting effect. Gardenia for men you say….hmmm

Very nice article. Finally some focus on men, was beginning to feel a bit neglected

  • The most romantic thing for me is a long marriage. Every year it becomes more and more romantic.

I love Caron, so my choice would be Montaigne.

  • In the mood for romance, a hug and a kiss from my boyfriend or a good historical romance novel. 🙂
Chinatown definitely sets my heart a-flutter – I love that perfume.

  • Scent is so sensual to me. I really love smelling Escada pour homme on my husband or Obsession. Chanel No 5 was my wedding scent so that is the scent my husband would choose. My choice would be Montaigne or I Love NY by Bond. Thanks so much for the draw and Happy Valentines Day!!

  • What puts me in the mood? A candlelit bubble bath complete with incense and soft music. Then sensual but firm back rubs given and received…*sighs*

Which perfumes make MY heart flutter from the above ones? HONESTLY. all of them! 😀 The ones I would most like to win? I <3 NY for All (sniffed and adore) and Anvers2 (never sniffed and dying to) got the biggest rise out of me! (Especially that dark hunky model! *giggles*

Thanks for the wonderful draw to both CaFleureBon and the companies listed! Love IS in the air…Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!!

  • a whiff of obsession for men on a certain gentleman always makes me speculate. however, my favorite of this bunch has to be montaigne….always and forever a caron fan.

  • What a generous draw, thank you! Anything from Caron sends me fluttering. I’ve yet to try Montaigne.
Happy day of Love to all!

  • This was a great read! I do believe Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan would put me in the mood. Bond No. 9 I Love New York inspires love in me, as well, so I would choose that one!

  • In the mood would put me seeing that I won that gorgeous bottle of I love NY lol. (joking)
In the mood puts me an interesting conversation, reading some poetry or simply listening to Michael Bolton’s songs.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  • A bottle of bubbly and my man is all I need to put me in the mood for love – ok, the champagne is optional! But we could throw in a warm tropical breeze on a private beach…

  • A nice glass of wine or good Port, chocolate mousse or souffle and a burning fire would be a perfect set. Bond 9 I love NY sounds great but if I am lucky to win this draw I would love to get A*Man .
My Love would smell great wearing it.

Thank you for such a great draw!

  • My boyfriend sent me 2 dozen red roses at work and is making me a romantic dinner tonight….the anticipation is killing me! I would love to spray him with that A-Men Pure Malt….sounds sexy and LOVE that bottle! Thanks for the draw. Happy Valentines Day!

  • The smell of Feminite du Bois puts me in mood for romance (my ex-girlfriend’s signature scent), and Une Rose of Frederic Malle!
    Thanks for the draw!!!

  • What a generous draw. I own and love Chinatown and Montaigne. I’ve been wanting to try the AMen Malt on my husband, and I myself have been lusting after the newest Bond. The Anvers and Moreil ones also sound great.
I’m not much of a gift person on Valentines. It all seems so premeditated. First husband would be a jerk, then appear with gifts. Yuck. Second husband of twenty years isn’t big on holiday gifts, but is generous 365 days and year and always treats me with love and respect. that’s good enough for me!

  • well, i would love to have a sniff at the original a*men again., it’s been years and years…

    happy valentines day all 🙂

  • A-men is what makes my heart flutter, would love to have a 3,4 oz of this wonderful thierry mugler scent

  • My love and I don’t do Valentines or any other holidays besides Halloween and New Years Eve. Instead we have our own little rituals that means something genuine to us.

Chinatown is a complicated scent in a decorated bottle and a very Valentine-y choice.

  • Montaigne is such a classy scent. Chinatown is a more modern scent.
Both would make my heart flutter.
Thank you for entering me into the draw.

  • Such a lovely draw, thank you CaFleureBon! I would so love to win any of these perfume, especially Caron Montaigne!

My boyfriend and I love to go for long walks on the weekends, look at different houses and discuss architecture and art… I think it’s rather romantic, especially on early Autumn evenings. I don’t usually go for the more typical flowers and candy, but I always welcome intelligent, interesting conversations and a glass of red wine 🙂 That’s where I find the romance.

  • What a wonderful post and draw.
Caron’s Montaigne extrait makes my heart beat faster, can’t you hear, bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom?

  • It might be odd but my idea of romance is a great hotel! Something about all the amenities, a beautiful king sized bed, marble bath, room service, spa, pool, view, etc. sounds like the best thing to me. 🙂
I would love to try the Caron Montaigne.

  • What a great draw!! Thanks for offering this. An intimate dinner with a good bottle of vino, followed by a roaring fire and LOTS of cuddling puts me in the mood.
Would love to win the L’Heure Bleue or any of the others!!

  • We are not doing anything today because next week we are going to Vegas to stay in a really nice hotel, see a Cirque du Soleil show and eat like ther is no tomorrow!

Happy Valentines day to everybody!!! Thanks Cafleurebon for another amazing draw.

  • I arrived home from work today to the most unusual and gorgeous floral arrangement and a plate of escargot…..and that was just the beginning. I’m touched by all the thought that goes into making a day special. I would love to try Anvers 2, as you made it sound so intriguing. Happy Valentine’s Day all!

  • Wow what an awesome draw! Thank you! I think that Caron or Chinatown bottle would make my heart flutter something fierce! A nice bottle of bubbly, cuddling and feeling my hubby run his fingers through my thick hair always does the trick for romance. 😉

  • The peony is the flower of love in the Eastern culture, so Chinatown would be a great choice. But Montaigne sounds soooo… appealing! 🙂
Thank you for offering this great draw!

  • Ayala Moriel’s perfume flutters my heart. It sounds gorgeous. I have not yet tried any of her fragrances but they have been on my radar for a while.

  • It would be very nice to win that bottle of Bond No.9 Chinatown, both me and my gf love it. So, Chinatown would make my heart flutter 🙂 But all the perfumes in this draw are top notch!

  • hotlanta linda says:

Caron!! Such a romantically storied house – just reading their history puts one in a romantic frame of mind! 🙂

  • Wow! What a draw!

I’m always in the mood for romance. That’s the best part of being a newly wed. I would LOVE to win the Chinatown, which has been on my wishlist for forever, but the I Heart NY and Anvers 2 sound equally special. 🙂

  • The thought of a full bottle of Chinatown makes my heart flutter! I wouldn’t kick the A*Men out of bed either (though I already have an FB of the fab Pure Malt version).

  • I think peach blossom is romantic, so Bond Chinatown would be my pick for a romantic scent – the bottle design is so beautiful too, it feels both retro and very contemporary!

  • Classical music and a leisurely drink watching the sunset always makes me feel romantic. 🙂 A bottle of Bond Chinatown would also make my heart flutter. Happy belated Valnetine’s Day and thanks for the giveaway!

  • Fireplace always puts me in the mood, especially paired with a glass of wine! I’d love to have that I love NY one, have a sample and it’s delicious!!

  • the mood…hmmm…chocolate, candlelight, fire, stars, full moon walks, and weirdly enough rain, especially thunderstorms. Not just being inside all cuddled up and listening to it either–walking, driving, being out in it.

Thanks for the article and the draw! I love MKK and am now very curious about Anvers 2 and A*men Malt.

I have sniffed and loved I Love New York… Have never sniffed Anvers 2 and am the most interested in it out of all the draws. But really I think I’d be happy with any of them!

  • I think Ayala’s ‘Bouquet of Love’ would make me feel all whimsical but ‘I Love New York’ might push a few buttons too!

  • What puts me in the mood for romance?
I’m afraid I’m very “cliche”: gardens with lakes and boats, a walk by the river, a beautiful dawn or sunset, the scent of sweet candles…

Thanks for all the prizes. If I won I’d pick Chinatown. I have always liked it 🙂

  • In the mood puts me him everytime he whispers nice things to my ear while in the background a romantic music is playing and he slowly plays with my hair.
I would like to win the Caron. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Caron “Montaigne” would make my heart flutter the most 🙂 Thank you the giveaway!

In general, a lovely, warm summer evening would definitely put me in the mood for romance, especially at the beach with a cocktail in my hand.

  • These are all so beautifully described it makes it hard to pick even just a few as potential favourites. Chinatown, Bouquet of love and Thierry Mugler A Men (I wouldn’t mind smelling this one on my guy!) all sound fantastic.

  • wow i would love to win chinatown or montagne extrait or anvers 2!
my guy has such a way with words, he speaks dirty but at the same way romantically, that drives me absolutely crazy!so you could say that it’s poetry that puts me in the mood.
    thanks for the generous draw!

  • L’artisan merchant loup reminds me of being a newlywed, so it is a romantic scent for the memories it holds. Would live to enter the draw.

  • Anvers 2 definitely might make my heart flutter. The progression of scent sounds amazing, and the base is enough to make me swoon.

  • I love Anvers 2 and have thought about a bottle now and then for a couple years now.

I hope you all had a wonderful, even if not amorous, Valentine’s Day. It’s always nice reading your lists — I especially like Mark’s and Tama’s choices of Pure Malt & L’Heure Bleue.

  • So many of the Caron’s define “love” for me…their classic notes bring to mind cafes and cigarettes and fantastic conversations….

  • Thank you for the most generous draw!
I would love Chinatown or I Love New York for All, both these truly make my heart flutter.

Chinatown puts me in a romantic mood — it’s such a unique fragrance. And so does Nahema, and so does Epic Woman (now, that I have discovered that it puts my partner in romantic mood)…

And red roses, cocktails, night lights, hoarse whispers, furtive touches.

  • In a romantic mood puts me a walk with my girlfriend through a nice place full of fragrances, the fragrance of flowers, the fragrance of fallen leaves, the fragrance of forest in the autumn, a place where we can relax and enjoy together our lives.

If I were to win, I would love to win the Caron. Many thanks for this great giveaway.

  • Mhm seems like I am a bit late for the draw. Anyway, my choice for a romantic moment or whole evening of romanticism would be the Tango dancehall, dancing simple salidas y media lunas to Al Compás del Corazón by Miguel Calo, wearing Calvin Klein Obsession and my wife wearing Shalimar, accompanying the other typical fragrances of the dancehall
