Launched in late 2019, as a Harrods exclusive Falcon Leather eau de parfum, became available worldwide in 2021. In 2024, MATIERE PREMIERE Falcon Leather Extrait debuted with guest ingredient Oud Assafi Oil Bangladesh.

Falcon Leather Extrait evokes both the sleek and the suede sides of leather. Combined with a higher perfume concentration and an even higher dosage of the main natural ingredient, Birch Tar Finland, the exceptional Oud (Assafi Oil Bangladesh), the hero ingredient, brings warmth, while amplifying the leather notes“. –Aurélien Guichard, Founder & Creative Perfumer

I love how Steven pronounced the perfumers name correctly!! I hope I’ll be able to try it and I’ll review it too! Thanks for the opportunity ✨

  • I love leather fragrances – they’re my favorite. Toro Bravo is an amazing find, of course everyone loves Ombre Leather from TF…I wear 3 sprays of Orto Parisi’s Cuoium! (front of chest, back of collar, right wrist and then gently tap to the left wrist). I would love to get my nose on this one as well. Who doesn’t love falcons?!

  • I have watched Steven’s reviews for a long time. He is always objective, thorough, and is an effective communicator. His review of Falcon Leather spurred my interest.

  • Michael Bullock says:

This fragrance sounds really good I’m a big of these types of fragrances and thank y’all for the giveaway GOD BLESS

  • reyessence89 says:

From Steve’s review, it sounds like the Extrait version retained the balance and the spirit of the OG while adding oud and upping the smokiness. Now I’m intrigued by Falcon Leather having an oud twist!

French Flower is one of my favourites from Matière Premier for the reason below. Quote from the Guichard interview – “I wanted a modern tuberose note strictly composed with tuberose, and none of the other flowers usually present in tuberose scents such as ylang-ylang, jasmine, iris…” The others are Falcon Leather EDP and Encens Suave EDP.

  • Chrissy8672 says:

Watched the YouTube video and found out this has a not of Birch Tar. This sounds very interesting!

  • I loved both the video and Aurelien’s introduction. Heavy leather/birch/oud in a higher concentration for winter! I actually liked the EDP Falcon leather when I tried it a year ago! as my skin eats fragrances this seems like it’s the one!

  • Aurelien Guichard’s article presents Falcon Leather Extrait (2024) with a quiet, elevated elegance, emphasizing richer birch‑tar leather, glowing saffron, and a deeper resinous warmth. Steven’s review complements this beautifully, noting the Extrait’s softened edges and its more graceful, wearable character. Guichard’s disciplined focus on a single raw material keeps the fragrance luminous even in its added depth. For someone who owns Parisian Musc, Santal Austral, and Crystal Saffron, Falcon Leather Extrait stands as the collection’s darker, more refined counterpart. Scented regards from NY, USA.

  • Matiere Premiere is one of my favorite houses. Vanilla Powder Extrait is so good. It’s a strong long lasting musky vanilla definitely a love. Crystal Saffron has a a sexy fragrance. Their scents are not for the weak. Steven is one a
of my favorite most trusted reviewers. He is so detailed in his descriptions. I appreciate that because even buying samples get expensive. Falcon Leathet Extrait has interesting notes I always look forward to a release from this house. I am in Pennsylvania USA

  • Ramses Perez says:

The collection of extraits for Matiere Premiere all have an extra note which in this case is the Oud Assafi Oil Bangladesh. Aurelian calls it a hero ingredient because in a way it’s coming to save the day and make the fragrance a stronger, more powerful version of the original. I was not aware this scent also has a little bit of a saffron smell (via the Birch Tar Finland) and I can see why Steven attributes the Extrait version to a more stoic and mysterious personality. I’m dying to try the Extrait line as I have tried the originals and once again, this is a house that deserves more recognition; the quality is there. I’m located in the USA.

  • Love Steven’s descriptions of fragrances. This sounds like a litteral beast, a Gothic beast! I just kept thinking this fragrance would be right up Ozzy Osborne’s alley (RIP). I have a couple fragrances with Birch tar and wear them rarely, as I live in Arkansas. We are in the middle of a snowstorm and this seems like the best time to break them out. I currently do not own any from this house. I really do love that the perfumer uses natural ingredients and includes their country of origin! USA

  • Steve agrees with Aurelien Guichard’s take on Falcon Leather extrait as a scent for those that are confident. Steve talks about the high quality of MATIERE PREMIERE Falcon Leather extrait which amps up the birch tar note that combines with saffron to create a counterbalance, toning down the abrasive, dark aspect birch tar can have; with the addition of oud and an amber that doesn’t lean on the sweet side and uplifts the leather notes. Falcon Leather extrait takes the original Falcon Leather DNA in a different direction that is original and unique.
    USA

  • I’m not familiar with the 2019 Falcon Leather iteration but I learned that the extrait version contains a higher dose of birch tar Finland and a special oud, Oud Assafi Oil Bangladesh. Steven’s video mentioned an increased perception of smokiness due to the oud.

From the Guichard interview on the inspiration for the Matiere Premiere line: “ We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.” USA

  • I love Steven’s reviews! He’s always so thorough. I’m excited for this one because birch is one of my favorite notes! Ohio USA

  • I am happy Steven led me to this website! I’m in love with vintage perfume and so I’ll be doing a lot of reading and frequenting this website now. I also love gothic and smokey fragrances. Thank you for the opportunity to sniff this one!! *USA*

  • The original Falcon Leather is such a gem and it seems they’ve made an already great composition even more interesting and intense based on Steven’s review. I love the inclusion of oud from Bangladesh and the benzoin smoothing its wildness out a bit.

Aurelien’s intro makes it clear that the oud and birch tar are the stars and I appreciate that forthrightness considering just based on the name you might expect a straight up leather fragrance.

A quote that really stuck with me from Michelyn’s past interview with Aurelien was “Fragrances by MATIERE PREMIERE are just like their central raw material: they have no gender, they combine great power and diffusion with a sense of comfort, they allow you to comprehend what you are wearing, and smelling them will bring unique emotions.”

I think it’s important that people understand notes don’t make a fragrance gendered and that bit is something everyone should take to heart when assessing fragrance as a tool of personal expression and style. It’s my guiding ethos, honestly.

Thank you for the giveaway opportunity!

  • Steven got me at smoky, balsamic, bold.

MATIERE PREMIERE Falcon Leather, the original I tried it and I liked it a lot.
I haven’t been able to get it, but I wish this Extrait version, with the mysterious, and bold character, could be a great addition to my collection.

Good luck to all, and that’s to Twisted Lily, for the fragrance giveaway. And thanks to çafleurebon and Steven for the post and video.

    From the USA.

  • I love leather and saffron fragrances. It adds so much depth. The addition of Bangladesh Oud speaks to his thoughts shared on his environment he grew up in, “I was lucky to grow up with them not only because they were successful and talented artists, but because they were open-minded and humble people, believing in diversity of talents and of visions of life.” Aurelien Guichard’s interview. Diversity comes to this blend of notes and I am intrigued to smell it.

  • I like leather when it feels purposeful, not noisy, and this one sounds like it has a clear point of view, leather that can be smooth and refined, but also softer like suede. That balance makes me think it would wear well, not just shout.

The interview line that stayed with me was simple. “Matière première” means “raw material” in French. That focus makes sense when the perfume is built around a strong natural note like birch tar, then warmed up with an exceptional oud to give it depth.

My favorite from Matiere Premiere is Parisian Musk, because I like a clean, quiet scent that still feels expensive and put together. Falcon Leather Extrait sounds like the darker coat you put on when the night is cooler, still elegant, just more serious.

    I reside in the USA

  • Would love to have this in my collection of Fragrances . Very nice review on this leather scent . You had me at OUD ….then you added leather . FORGET ABOUT IT …. love it

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

“ I was certainly influenced by this environment. Because I have such wonderful memories given by these unique people surrounding me in my childhood, and also because I could see both the happiness and sadness, hopes and disappointments, dedication and human friendship linked to the creative work of my father – I knew what I was stepping into when I decided to become a perfumer.” I pulled this from the past interview and it shows the dedication of the perfumer. This brand is awesome and you can tell they take great care with every perfume. I love Steven’s review of this as he describes a rich, elegant fragrance. I’d love to win this sleek perfume and live in Indiana.

  • Oh sounds cozy and warm. I’d love to try this. It took me a while to appreciate leather fragrances but something shifted in me and now I like most of them! This house is pretty solid. I am located in the U.S.

  • I love how Aurélien Guichard elevates Falcon Leather Extrait by deepening its duality, the sleek precision of polished leather meeting the warm, suede-like sensuality underneath. It’s fascinating to see how he continues to refine the material storytelling behind leather itself.

I really enjoyed how Steve broke down the composition of Falcon Leather Extrait, it was such a smart comparison between the original and the Extrait. His description of the birch tar and Bangladeshi oud creating that dark, gothic atmosphere really captured the soul of what makes Matière Première so special. I also appreciated the way he explained the balance between saffron and smoke. It helped me understand how Aurélien Guichard refined the DNA without losing the brand’s essence.

Though I haven’t yet experienced Matiere Premiere’s artistry firsthand, Encens Suave Extrait calls to me like a whispered promise. I’m drawn to fragrances that linger in memory as much as on skin, and this sounds like the kind of bold, sophisticated comfort I need for those introspective winter evenings. One day soon, I’ll let it tell me its story.

  • Steven’s take on MP Falcon Leather Extrait had me nodding the whole time, it comes off like a real upgrade in density and presence, not just “more concentration so it costs more.” The whole sleek leather vs suede leather idea is exactly the kind of contrast that keeps a leather from feeling flat.

I also like that Aurélien is straightforward about the construction. “We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction.” That is basically the brand in one sentence, and you feel it here with the higher dose of Birch Tar from Finland plus that Oud Assafi oil from Bangladesh bringing warmth and pushing the leather effect.

My favorite from the house is Matiere Premiere Cologne Cédrat, it is clean, bright, and precise. Falcon Leather Extrait feels like the opposite end of the dial, darker, smokier, and more intimate, but still built with that same clarity.

    I live in the USA

  • I appreciates Aurélien Guichard‘s introduction because I was even aware there was an extrait lol. Steven is perfectly descriptive as usual.

    NC USA

  • I really enjoy the combination of birch tar, benzoin and oud so Falcon Leather Extrait sounds like the ideal fragrance for me.

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

Steven’s review highlighted the contrast between sleek, polished leather and softer suede warmth, which made Falcon Leather Extrait feel dynamic rather than heavy. From Aurélien Guichard’s introduction, I loved learning how the higher concentration, amplified Birch Tar, and Oud Assafi add warmth and depth without overpowering the leather. Radical Rose and Encens Suave are my current MATIERE PREMIERE standouts. I live in the Bay Area, USA.

  • Thanks to Steven for this amazing review.
This new Extrait version of Falcon Leather catches my attention, l’am a real fan of the Matiere Premiere fragrances and I am very excited to try this new one. Right now I got Vanilla Powder, Parisian Musc and Santal Austral. Looking forward to add more of their amazing fragrances in my collection!
Love this quote of the interview: Aurelien Guichard: “Because I have such wonderful memories given by these unique people surrounding me in my childhood, and also because I could see both the happiness and sadness, hopes and disappointments, dedication and human friendship linked to the creative work of my father – I knew what I was stepping into when I decided to become a perfumer.”

So much history and legacy! Amazing!

  • Learning from the introduction that this fragrance focuses on birch tar as it’s hero ingredient has my attention as this is a note that I don’t have featured in my collection yet which I was surprised to discover as I consider myself an avid lover of all things dark and smoky. Steven drive home the point of this being a dark, mysterious, and Gothic fragrance multiple times which has furthered my interest in making me think this would be a very welcome addition to my collection as that is what I refer to as being “my type”. I have yet to explore Matiere Premiere but am very interested in several of their offerings. I’m in the USA.

  • “Because I have such wonderful memories given by these unique people surrounding me in my childhood, and also because I could see both the happiness and sadness, hopes and disappointments, dedication and human friendship linked to the creative work of my father – I knew what I was stepping into when I decided to become a perfumer.” -Guichard

Leather is one of the notes I can say I have had to grow to appreciate. Steven mentions how this fragrance even with the ambers smells very gothic and dark and mysterious. He also states how it does not try to impress and that is what im looking for when I add something to my collection nowadays. Aloof and stoic matches me very well.

Aurelien mentions how the Birch Tar is the main natural in the formula and it is at a higher dose and after smelling the original years ago I am highly interested

  • crownroyale47 says:

I love Guichard’s quote of “I love when minimalism and functionalism meet an overdose of (raw) materials and colors, in some Impressionist paintings or in street art.”

Steven is one of 3 fragrance channels I follow and am always attentive to his reviews. I really appreciate how he describes the birch tar and what you can expect from it, the tones of the scents, and his unbiased opinion of the fragrance.

My favorite Matiere Premiere fragrance is Vanilla Powder as I love vanilla fragrances.

As for Aurelien Guichard, his talking about his family history and the ingredients he was able to use in the fragrance due to the availability and proximity of them was pretty cool.

    I am in the U.S.

  • Sulema Sosa says:

This parfum sounds interesting and unique. Steven always describes scents at 100%. His expertise is just on point. I wouldn’t mind this bottle added to my son’s collection. Oh, how I love men’s scents.

  • Between the Bangladeshi out and Finnish birch tar Aurelien Guichard mentioned in his introduction, Falcon Leather Extrait sounds deeply rich and complex, with a warm character perfect for this extra-cold weather. I’m always struck by this portion of his interview with Michelyn that speaks to his process: “We decided our goal would be to turn a raw material into a perfume, with a unique construction: use a very high dosage of one central, extremely qualitative and natural ingredient, then use only a few more, equally qualitative ingredients to facet the main one.”

Steven pointed out that the saffron in Falcon Leather is dosed much more lightly compared to Crystal Saffron, with the birch tar bringing a “gothic” feel, especially with the resin balance leaning towards benzoin, not labdanum. Interesting choice to avoid any sweetness and let these dark, moody materials speak for themselves. Signature stuff.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Steven’s description of the birch tar as smelling like a “burning forest” really helped me picture the dark, gothic personality of Falcon Leather Extrait. From Aurélien Guichard’s interview, I loved learning how he sees raw materials as the “colors” he uses to create emotion. That philosophy makes this scent feel like true art.

  • foreverscents says:

I liked the way Steven described Falcon Leather Extrait as gothic and stoic. I love those types of sensibilities, so I think this fragrance would suit me like a glove. Steven said the fragrance is indeed expensive, but with the high concentrations of birch tar and oud, the price is surely justified. No doubt the saffron note that smooths out the composition adds to the expense. I know I could wear Falcon Leather Extrait confidently.
    I live in the USA.

  • “First, the creative conviction and courage it took, for established brands and marketing directors to let a young trainee perfumer create his first perfumes alone, under no Master Perfumer’s guidance and supervision.”

This quote resonated with me deeply because it speaks to earned trust at the very beginning of a creative life, not after decades of credentials or institutional validation. A little perspective from my shoes – I’m nearing the end of my first creative life after 25 years and I hold deep insecurities far below the surface on the giant leap I will be taking on my second, completely unrelated, creative career. At its core, the quote affirms something I deeply value: that authenticity is most fragile, and now in retrospect for me, most powerful, at the start.

I enjoy most of Steve’s reviews. I had a 10ml decant of Falcon Leather Extrait last fall and that birch tar middle note is dirtier on me than the original Falcon Leather – I have the 50 ML bottle. I prefer the Extrait with the dirtier birch tar and would so enjoy a gifted bottle.

  • I always forgot to add that I live in the US. I was too focus on oversharing and forgot. 😉

  • This sounds very rich and bold. I love how the hero ingredient, oud, is present and adds a quality of mystery to this blend. The birch tar and benzoin sounds resinous and dark. This fragrance sounds dark and serious that also clones its wearer in secrecy. I would love to own this dark and brooding scent that would set me apart from others. From USA.

  • Myrto Makri says:

I am suuuuper interested to smell this dark and gothic fragrance! Steven is doing a very thorough job describing these amazing quality fragrances ☺️

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the rich and tactile review! Matière Première Falcon Leather Extrait feels like slipping into a perfectly broken-in aviator jacket—smooth, smoky, and beautifully supple without feeling sharp or aggressive. The way the leather opens with that warm roasted nuance and then softens into resins and gentle woods gives it a real sense of texture on skin, like supple hide wrapped in molten amber. I especially loved how the leathery depth never becomes one-dimensional; the spices and musks in the dry-down add an understated elegance that keeps it classy and memorable. I’d love to try Falcon Leather Extrait!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Thank you so
Very much for the maxing review of this fragrance and for the info and sharing. This is definitely on my list to try
