In Headspace Parfums’ latest release Rose, composed by master perfumer Dominique Ropion, the headspace of gunpowder is used as a stunning way to reveal sophisticated secrets nestled within the velvety depths of this fresh interpretation of rose. As its velvet petals unfurl in the green twilight, you are greeted with a minty chill, with a sharp and cool aromatic greenery. It pierces the dark sweetness then wrapped in the powdery ghost of dry cool gunpowder feel, that acidic blackcurrant bud and with a burning shot of clove from basil. But before the cool aromatic gunpowder blooms into a fresh take on rose, there is a shot.

Headspace Rose bursts with a deep juicy blackcurrant fruitiness, one that’s set off by tarragon and liquorice making it feel full and rich while mint’s herbal spices keep it from being overly sweet. Rose always stays in the aromatic arena with the florals giving it an allure, as incense later adds a mysterious feel. Rose isn’t your typical rose, its green and fresh. As the sweetness drains from the rose, the cool aromatic greens and mint bullet that had found its mark, summons a pale and ghostly white incense smoke, pushed through the cool aromatics. On my skin this part happens fast, I go from this gunshot of fruit that blooms into geranium spices that unfurl into a green rose. A soft metallic green shimmer with a dry tang of camphor bristles on your skin as herbal greens melt at the edges where a warm spiced clove burns through. That heat feels like the impact of the gunpowder, the cloves heat and basils creamy facets working in a clever way to conjure that explosive feel.

Headspace Rose has a huge scent trail, its geranium spices and green aromatics linger in the air where you have been. I wore the perfume for the first time to work and as I walked back and forth between rooms, I spent the morning trying to figure out where the intoxicating perfume aroma was coming from. It took me a minute to realise it was coming from me! I was wearing the amazing aromatic spiced fresh scent that was hanging in the air. Headspace Rose is a very powerful perfume. My nose was playing tricks on me and on my skin, it was that intoxicating spiced geranium green but in the air more of the rosy berry dark facets shone with an aromatic freshness that felt bright and invigorating.

The interplay of the mint and basil creates a dry smokiness like a powdery green with mint’s camphor teasing out this soft velvety texture, while it fresh greens conjure a dry metallic sheen. The perfume’s rose blossoms out of these cool aromatics and herbs, the basil’s creamy side forming the petals as fresh citruses sit behind the cool aromatics, foreshadowing the fresh yet creamy smoky frankincense. That intense clove spice from basil merges into a neon green geranium spiced rose making its heart glow as the darker aspects begin to soften. Brighter tones fade into the edges, giving Headspace Rose a cool iridescent diffusive freshness. Geranium’s green spices glimmer with a deeper intensity which plays beautifully off the soft more rosy floral facets, intensity flows into a softness as dark and light tones glide over your skin. Blackcurrant bud gives Rose as darker, subtle sweetness while amplifying the spicy aspects of geranium. Its gives Rose this addictive tart acidic tang, like sour sweets. That minty camphor lingers, feeling like a dry gunpowder incense smoke cloud. Soft woody facets are haunting the light musky edges feeling abstract as they blur into gentle florals. Geranium’s watery rosiness helps this abstract in-between state like an iridescent cloak of petals that holds all this delicious spiced greenery.

The dry down is a beautiful geranium-laden rose incense, feeling assertive with its sharp spices while also letting its softer side wrap around you in a  haze of ambered incense, picking up the rich aspects of the basil, until benzoin takes over. There’s a vanillic creaminess that’s not obvious at first, it’s more of woody side pushes through, giving it a soft depth. Vetiver leans onto this soft cosy woodiness as the incense shimmers with geranium’s green floral spices. It unfurls, revealing a sense of chilly beauty haunting the air swirling in mysterious woody incense smoke. A fresh aromatic green rose with a wink of sweetness at its heart.

Notes: Basil, Mint, Blackcurrant Bud, Rose, Geranium, Tarragon, Vetiver, Incense, Benzoin.

  • I love the play between what is in the air and what you get off your own skin. Plus I love a spicy rose, and vetiver is also a favorite. In maryland.

  • J’s review of Headspace Rose intrigues me with its blend of rose, spice, and smoke. The aromatic interplay of mint and basil, coupled with the deeper notes of blackcurrant and clove, paints a vivid picture of a fresh yet intense fragrance. As someone who enjoys unique scent combinations, the idea of a “cyber rose” with a hint of gunpowder is particularly captivating. I live in Poland, EU.

Let me start by saying that I love Dominique Ropion and all his creations.
This article beautifully captures the unique and daring approach taken by Headspace Parfums in their latest release, Rose, composed by the renowned perfumer Dominique Ropion. The use of gunpowder as a central note is particularly striking and highlights a bold, avant-garde vision for modern perfumery. The juxtaposition of gunpowder’s “powdery ghost” with the typically floral, soft essence of rose creates an intriguing tension that challenges traditional olfactory expectations.

The description of the fragrance’s development—starting with the minty chill and sharp, aromatic greenery, followed by the dark sweetness and the unexpected presence of gunpowder—suggests a fragrance that is both complex and multi-layered. It’s not just about the rose, but rather the way it interacts with these unconventional elements like blackcurrant bud and clove. These notes seem to tease and reveal deeper, almost hidden qualities of the rose, making it feel less predictable and more sophisticated.

The idea of the “burning shot of clove from basil” adds an interesting spiciness, suggesting a fiery tension that contrasts beautifully with the otherwise cool, powdery aspects. It evokes a kind of sensory journey, where each note feels like a chapter revealing new facets of the fragrance. This composition likely appeals to those who enjoy fragrances that feel intellectual and complex, as it doesn’t simply smell pleasant, but rather invites deeper exploration.

The imagery in the article—the “velvet petals unfurling in the green twilight”—suggests a poetic, almost cinematic experience of the scent, offering a sense of how it might envelop the wearer or the environment. Overall, it sounds like a perfume that refuses to be just another rose fragrance, instead using unexpected elements to redefine and elevate the familiar floral note into something fresh and dynamic.

  • One of my favorite spring perfumes, ELDO’s You or Someone Like You, features mint and rose. J’s review makes Headspace Rose sound totally different, yet the interplay of those two notes makes me really intrigued. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • Dominique Ropion’s reputation for innovation precedes him, and your review suggests that Rose Headspace is a worthy addition to his impressive oeuvre. The way you’ve deconstructed the fragrance, analyzing the interplay between the traditional rose and the unconventional gunpowder accord, demonstrates a keen understanding of perfumery. Your commentary transcends a mere listing of notes, delving instead into the philosophical implications of such a juxtaposition. The concept of juxtaposing delicate floralcy with an element of such stark contrast is profoundly intriguing. I appreciate your insightful analysis and the way you’ve contextualized Rose Headspace within the broader landscape of contemporary fragrance. Thank you for sharing your expertise with such articulate precision and inviting us to contemplate the artistry inherent in perfumery.

ooooh, the combination of rose with herbs like basil, mint, tarragon and then smoky incense/clove sounds really fun– i feel like i usually see rose paired with sweet notes like fruity or gourmand… and the description of the “shot” of blackcurrent and tarragon and licorice is so fun in the context of the “gunpowder rose” name! the name also reminds me of gunpowder green tea, and i wonder if the incense and tarragon will come off as “tea” like to my nose…

  • I’m genuinely intrigued by how this perfume plays with contrasts — mint and incense, gunpowder and rose, blackcurrant and basil. That kind of unexpected duality is what keeps me coming back to niche fragrances. I love a scent that tells a story and isn’t afraid to challenge the typical idea of what “a rose” should be. The way this is described — shifting between cold metal and creamy florals — sounds like the kind of scent that becomes a signature.

I don’t usually go for rose perfumes, but this sounds like it would totally convert me. The “mint bullet,” “camphor bristles,” and “ghostly incense” give me chills (in a good way). I love when a scent manages to feel both sharp and soft at the same time. From the description, it seems like one of those fragrances that transforms on your skin throughout the day and tells a different story in the air around you. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it!

What caught my attention was how evocative the whole scent journey seems — from a sharp blackcurrant punch to this unfolding green floral heart with geranium and mint, and finally a soft woody incense drydown. I’m a sucker for perfumes with a strong sense of atmosphere, and this sounds like you could practically see and feel the scenery around it. Dominique Ropion rarely misses, and it sounds like he’s done something really special here.

This review completely transported me. I can almost smell that icy aromatic opening with mint and basil, followed by that moment where the rose comes through like a warm breath over cold metal. I adore perfumes that feel alive, with real tension and release. It’s not just a scent — it’s an experience. And I love how this sounds like it lingers in the air long after you’ve left the room. That’s the kind of sillage I dream of.

The moment I read “a dry gunpowder incense smoke cloud,” I was hooked. That paired with a rose and clove heart? Come on — that’s poetry in a bottle. I appreciate how this fragrance doesn’t sound like it’s trying to be pretty, but rather fascinating and complex. The kind of scent you wear when you want to feel mysterious and powerful. Definitely going on my must-try list.

  • Headspace Rose sounds like the stuff the dreams are made of! I love rose as a solinote, but I appreciate it even more when blended in unusual ways, and the one Headspace used seems to be exactly that. A green rose on a bed of mint and basil, gunpowder and incense, with just a touch of vanilla to soften the edges. Sounds special and quite versatile. At the same time, the performance and the chameleonic quality add some extra magic to the whole thing.

What a compelling review! I’m not usually the first one in line to try a rose-centered fragrance, but the herbs, the spices, and especially the geranium have got me hooked! And let’s be frank, Dominique Ropion rarely misses.

I’d like to add that the illustrations in this review were especially illustrative of the ideas and the movements that Headspace Rose has conveyed to J. So well done!

  • Bloomfields says:

Wow, a Dominique Ropion gunpowder rose fragrance for 2025! The notes sound absolutely fascinating, especially the interplay between the classic rose and the smoky, metallic gunpowder accord. I’m so curious to see how those contrasting elements will balance and create something truly unique and captivating. The “headspace” extraction of the rose is also intriguing, promising a potentially very realistic and nuanced floral experience.

  • I’m a man that enjoys wearing floral scents and rose has been a staple for me for quite a few years. The rose/oud combo craze has broken gender constraints and rendered rose accesible to everyone, I do hope however that the male consumers can move past that stage and discover and enjoy more rose-centric compositions such as the one discibed in this article. Rose and herbs is another way to enjoy this floral note. Eager to try this!

  • Oh, how I love rose in my perfumes!
What sparked my interest is that this rose isn’t your typical rose, its green and fresh. As the sweetness drains from the rose, the cool aromatic greens and mint bullet that had found its mark, summons a pale and ghostly white incense smoke, pushed through the cool aromatics.

I love this combination, of sharp and dark and loud gunpowder and juicy fruits and rose, especially when I know the master nose Ropion did it. This sounds interesting, im from eu.

Dominic is one of my favorite perfumers and rose is my favorite note. This sounds so delightful. Especially the vetiver at the end. I live in Indiana and would love to win this!

  • Headspace Rose sounds outright incredible! Ropion can absolutely nail a rose fragrance. Portrait of a Lady is the golden standard rose for me. His take on a rose with the added headspace accord of gunpowder sounds so cool. Combined with the green and incense-y notes, the overall scent profile looks fun and surprising while still making perfect sense.

    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • This is the kind of fragrance I can see Ropion doing and doing it really well! He has a way of mixing in some just slightly odd but making it fit perfectly. I can’t wait to try this! I love a unique rose and I know this will be magic in his hands.

I find a green rose scent to be incredibly alluring and sexy. I love how the reviewer could smell their own scent trail and notice how it varied from the smell of the fragrance on their skin. Incense is one of my most favored of notes and I’m curious how it plays out in this perfume. I live in Oregon.

Wow! Just wow…Thanks for the wonderful review. I haven’t tried the perfumes of this house, but I would love to, of course.Headspace Rose sounds like a quite alluring and mysterious rose perfume, incorporating more notes to support and highlight the rose itself but what fascinates me more is that it is mixed with mint, spices and incense, make this totally intriguing. This intoxicating fresh herbal but also dark aroma of a gunpowder rose makes me to become my next signature scent. Such a captivating creation by the master perfumer Dominic Ropion (he is one of my favourite perfumes). Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. I live In Europe

  • Nice review, Mr. J! Here we have gunpowder, the extreme opposite, as a tool to interpret the majesty of the Rose. The genius of Mr. Ropion is capable of discovering new facets of the rose after beautiful creations like Portrait of a Lady and A Rose is a Rose, among others. Here, he proposes to shake up the classicism of the flower. Fresh aromatic herbs like mint and basil give way to the dry gunpowder, leaving the stage for the rose—not your typical one, but green and fresh. The drydown is sharp with geranium-laced rose incense and softened with a woody amber incense. Headspace rose has a great and wonderfully contradictory sillage on the skin. I live in Spain, EU.
