I want to give a big shout out to perfumer and Art and Olfaction Award winning American artisan Daniel Gallagher. Daniel his wife Mindy Ruiz t run the entire Gallagher Fragrances operations, which is why Steven and I chose to feature Gallagher Fragrances for our annual #shopsmall Saturday post.-Michelyn

Daniel shares insights into his new fragrance Cadence:

Cadence embodies rhythm and balance, mirroring the fragrance itself—a seamless blend of bold and comforting, familiar and unexpected. My creative process focused on crafting a timeless yet distinctive scent. I set out to create a spicy pipe tobacco fragrance while avoiding the typical reliance on sweetness. Instead, I incorporated cinnamon, Ambrocenide®, and a thoughtfully curated mix of ingredients to add depth, warmth, and intrigue. The result is a fragrance that strikes a harmonious balance between contrast and cohesion, offering an experience that feels both classic and refreshingly modern.” – Daniel Gallagher, Perfumer

Featured Notes: Plum, Serrano Pepper, Cinnamon, Honey, Neroli, Rosemary, Clove, Lavender, Pipe Tobacco, Oakwood, Virginian Cedarwood, Amber, Cade, Musk, Patchouli, Styrax, Vanilla, and Vetiver.

Interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a spicy tobacco fragrance per say. This is definitely new territory for me. I’m not afraid of dark fragrances overall as I do experience all 4 seasons where I live (NJ) so a change of tune is always welcomed. I haven’t smelled the fragrance Steven mentioned but from reading the notes I could tell this is very unique. I would’ve thought the plum gets swollen up between the spices and tobacco but I’m glad you can still get a little bit of it. Maybe I need a bit of Michelyn’s skin chemistry so that it’s not as spicy on me. On any case, bring on the dark woods! I’m located in the USA.

  • I absolutely love this fragrance Got it when I ordered My discovery set and it was very spicy and intoxicating New signature scent worthy, for sure

  • Daniel wanted to stay away from the typical “sweet notes” like vanilla, used to lighten up tobacco fragrances. The use of Plum, honey, Cinnamon and Ambrocenide combined with Serrano Pepper, Clove and Cade give it that smoky spiciness which creates a nuanced scent that has quality and depth—while retaining that classic tobacco feel that is still modern.
Steve concurs. Cadene has a dark smokiness to it. An opening that leans heavily into the spicy, fiery side. It is very aromatic with all the combined notes of oakwood and cedar, lavender, tobacco—this for him is more on the masculine side of things–he feels like is only one other fragrance that compares to Candence in its unique take on Tobacco. This is a unique scent for him.

  • A refreshing but modern tobacco? A NON SWEET Tobacco? I’ve been waiting for that for a long time! Daniel makes the intro quite an intriguing tease for Steven’s video. And this is surely the season for plum and spices, so even though Steven didn’t get a lot of plum, I’m ready for a lot of spices and wood! I often wear unisex or masculine fragrances, so that doesn’t scare me. I always try to shopsmall when we get here. It’s a way to support a small business and oppose the generic big box overlords that make the retail world so Samey and boring.

I heard about this new fragrance on Redolescence. I’ve been following him for a while now and I’m so thankful that there is someone who provides honest and unbiased opinions about the plethora of fragrances available today. I’m looking forward to trying it! I love the fragrance profile and think it would suit me well for the winter months.

I want to win the giveaway because it sounds really good with some great notes in there. GOD BLESS

  • The creative process promised a timeless yet distinctive scent. The video emphasized spice and dark. I haven’t #shopsmall. US

I am starting my fragrance journey and the idea of a “darker” fragrance interests me. Pepper and spices can bring a bit of warmness to your taste buds so why not your scenses? Can something be dark and warm at the same time? I might be way off but it makes me curious and I do want to give it a chance!

I love how unique and unconventional this perfume is. Daniel’s process focused on creating a timeless yet distinctive scent. The serrano pepper here is interesting and I would love to smell what it brings to this fragrance. Even though this was said to lean masculine, I would be interested to smell it on my skin. I think it’s something I could get behind. I love a dark and mysterious scent. I follow Cafleurebon on ig, my handle is eris.can.swatch.kaos. I live in Oregon.

  • Excellent and thorough review, as always! I agree on wholeheartedly and also it seems that my nose picks up more plum. I love the way Gallagher handles the note. I agree that it leans a little more masculine (but of course anyone can wear it), and I think that is a good descriptor. I can smell the ambrocenide, but as usual, they didn’t use it profusely, it’s used appropriately and modestly. Another excellent perfume from the house.

  • I’m so happy to see Gallagher Fragrances featured on small business Saturday. It’s the niche, independent perfumers that are composing the unique, interesting scents today. The remit of a non-sweetened spicy tobacco fragrance using notes of plum, serrano pepper and lavender is something a truly creative person would do. As per Steven’s review, I would like to smell more plum. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Interesting that the spice isn’t here as prominently on Michelyn’s skin. I love that it is classic and modern. That this leans masculine means I’d love to smell it on my hubby. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Nice. I love me a good pipe tobacco fragrance. I definitely would like to get my nose on what a timeless, distinctive scent would be like.

I like how Steven right off the top describes the fragrance as a dark, spicey, peppery fire blend. Wow! The darker the better for me. I’m glad this isn’t a plum forward fragrance.

Would love to add this masculine leaning unique fragrance to my collection.

  • Ha I was just asked if I could think of any non-sweet or non- heavy floral tobacco forward fragrances and I could only think of three!! (Moon Dust by MiN, Aguru by TRNP and Tabac Verte by Rogue) Out of the thousands I’ve tried. So here we go! Perfect timing. I’m always down for a plum note too. So exciting to see this fragrance.
I am in the USA ~ thank you for the generous giveaway.

  • Very interesting! Contrast and cohesion and the nod to balance you can “see” (or smell?) unfold with the notes. Honey and Serrano pepper, lavendar and cinnamon-ok you got me! And if Steven has trouble comparing it to another scent; you know it’s unique! Very intrigued by a nice dark Fall/Winter scent with such spice and depth! I’ve grown to love shopping small for fragrances (Day Three, Hez & Darren Allen are recent loves) and always eager to find new options! Cheers from Ohio! 🙂

  • The Serrano pepper note in this tobacco fragrance is really intriguing. Like Daniel said in his thoughts about Cadence, many tobacco fragrances are quite sweet, and I appreciate that this one tries to prioritize spice and depth instead. Steven mentioned the Serrano pepper note is immediately obvious and spicy, which is perfect, since that’s the point of distinction for this fragrance. I’m also glad Steven compared Cadence to Plum in Cognac, which puts the plum up front, while Cadence allows the plumb to be a supporting player. I would love to try this spicy fragrance now that snow is starting to fall here. Perfect for cool weather (and Gallagher Fragrances is a great #shopsmall option).

I’ve been intrigued by this brand for some time and have been meaning to get my nose on a few of the offerings. I really enjoy tobacco and plum in fragrances and lean towards the darker end of the spectrum on my tastes. I try to shop small when I can especially, minority-owned businesses. Really hope to win this offering in my birthday month; appreciate the opportunity. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

Cadence is such a great name for a fragrance, especially one that contains cade. I love how Daniel wanted to blend bold and comforting, familiar and unexpected. The peppery and spicy notes convey a dark and smoky woodiness, according to Steven. He also sad the fragrance is novel, perhaps because it doesn’t follow the typical sweetness found in pipe tobacco fragrances. I liked that he couldn’t really compare it to any other fragrances. The serrano pepper note certainly sounds unique to me.
I absolutely do #shopsmall. I prefer not to give my money to corporations.

The name is not only unique but suites its overall demeanor. When all fall in formation, together as a whole they follow a path despite the various differences in their respective volatility. The spicy disposition garners an attention getting, Pow, then the complexity delicately take its time to exhibit how well rounded and deep this goes. Hats off to Mr. Gallagher as well as Mrs, Ruiz for not following trends and bringing the noise so your followers know you still got it. The dark facets stand tall and slowly throughout its wear time. Settling into a cozy mood, thet always keeps its weraer enchanted and fills any parts lacking. From Jacksonville, NV<—-Igloo
