One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.

One side of what? The other side of what?” thought Alice to herself.

“Of the Mushroom” said the caterpillar, just as if she had asked it aloud. Alice in Wonderland

Christopher’s Wheeldon’s contemporary ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland contains my favorite depiction of the blue caterpillar. Ballet dancer Eric Underwood dances the role that Wheeldon created especially for him, with sensuous movements and sinuous limbs. Underwood’s blue caterpillar seems to almost mesmerize Alice as he presents her with a piece of hallucinogenic mushroom to eat. I was similarly mesmerized by 2 x Art  & Olfaction award-winning American perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar.

Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar opens with a beautifully tempting and soft blend of apricot, tobacco, and vanilla. This unusual combination is sweetly grounded with a tide of intrigue leading me to sniff my wrist over and over. Amber explains her inspiration for the scent, “While Alice and the other main characters are often used for perfume briefs, I kept coming back to the languid but rather stern caterpillar perched upon a magical mushroom. Mushroom is an unusual perfume note that can easily overwhelm a scent with its strong character but the mellow, warm sweetness of tobacco seemed not only the perfect foil, but a unique pairing yet to be explored.”

Smoky nuances carry The Blue Caterpillar forward through time. After about an hour of the opening mushroom accord, a heady English rose opens on my skin. Warm pinks with flushes of musky incense and streaks of aromatic licorice add to the classic fruity and powdery notes of rose. This scent is serpentine in its movement and quite seductive with its low center of gravity and radiant aura.

The Blue Caterpillar Art by Rachel

Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar starts to dry down with creamy sandalwood whose warmth is a seamless transition from the smoky rose of the heart. Woody earthy moss keeps the fragrance willowy. Amber sweetness lingers deep into the evening. The Blue Caterpillar is one of the most interesting and unique fragrances I’ve had the pleasure of wearing in a long time.

Note from Aether Arts Perfume: “Aether Arts Perfumes are at Extrait/Perfume Strength in a voile format (sprayable oil) and available in both sprays and roller style bottles.”

Notes: apricot, vanilla, tobacco accord, soft smoke, mushroom accord, English rose, sandalwood, moss, amber

This sounds interesting. Not sure about that mushroom accord but apricot, tobacco & vanilla? Wow. I don’t have any fragrances with the apricot accord in it. Definitely would like to try this one out.

  • Oof so many things about this are intriguing to me!! I love apricot in a fragrance but with a smoky rose and tobacco it sounds gorgeous. Then steaks of licorice? Sign me up!! That’s such a witchy magical note to add. Well done! And Rachel your art for this perfume is mesmerizing. I love that it is an extrait oil. Cannot wait to try this! Luck be with me.

The notes breakdown is peculiar but I’m sure it’s very intentional and nothing is out of place. I cannot imagine how this smells but vanilla is always a safe base. I imagine the base smoothing out whatever chaos comes on at first. From Jacksonville, NC.

I wonder if mushroom accords vary a little bit, like for instance what does a brown mushroom vs. an amanita mushroom smell like in perfume and which one is the blue caterpillar telling Alice about? What intrigues me most about this perfume is the tobacco (apricot/vanilla) and how it melds with the mushroom, I would be very curious to smell it! From Portland, USA.

  • I have tester from a little indie place in Portland, OR, with mushroom, since i wasn’t sure about it (and my nose was tired) but I love it! This sounds really wonderful, and I love scents that you can’t stop sniffing… and why don’t I remember the caterpillar as blue? This was a lovely review and very intriguing scent. Thank you for the review and the draw! I’m in the us.

  • Mesmerizing sounds like the right word for this scent alright! Certainly sounds like something with an interesting journey from one note to the next. The earthiness of mushroom sounds like a great way to ground the other elements.

  • What a unique sounding perfume! I do have one scent with a mushroom accord (by DSH) which I quite like; it would be interesting to experience another iteration of it. I also find the touch of licorice quite intriguing. I was a big Alice fan growing up so I appreciate the nod. USA

  • One of my favorite stories, I named my cat Alice. I have 2 fragrances with mushroom and love them both. A very unique note which I imagine needs a skilled nose. The notes sound amazing, especially the apricot and the powdery rose. I love that Rachel describes this as the most unique and interesting. Thanks for the great article. USA.

  • Lovely description for a perfume journey: sinuous is so vividly visual! I can see the sensual curves of scent as if I’m watching that same ballet. Sounds like an amazing artful journey.

  • This main accord of tobacco and mushroom is such an unusual design that fits the Blue Caterpillar theme perfectly. This sounds like the kind of fragrance I love, especially in cooler weather, when sweet tobaccos and stone fruit shine. Plus Amber’s perfumes are available as oils; they wear close to the body and perform well. I’d love to try this.

    I’m in the USA.

  • What a review! This fragrance is “serpentine” with a “low center of gravity” – this is beautiful writing. Even without the list of notes I was ready to try this fragrance – I am a huge Alice in Wonderland fan. I am sure it is gorgeous.
