Cannes 2024 photos by Danu
Cannes 2024 fragrance event was held September 30-October 3rd, just at the same time as the TWFA, Tax Free World Association (a fringe event that has evolved over the past few years that is now firmly entrenched in the artisanal perfumery calendar of events. Each year there are more suites to visit and of course, as its Cannes, spectacular parties to attend. A time when I am privileged to get a preview sniff of 2025 upcoming releases. 2025 will be filled with scented surprises.
Rooftop Mondrian – Atelier des Ors and Jovoy Party – Danu and Thierry Bernard -Parfumeurs du Monde, Thomas de Monaco, Angelos Balamis and former editor and perfumer Alexandre Helwani at Cannes 2024
Day One of Cannes 2024– I started my adventures, with the evening cocktail reception, hosted by Atelier des Ors and Jovoy Paris, on the rooftop at the Mondrian Hotel, a chance to meet up with friends and colleagues. Spending this time with creators and perfumers alike is a pleasure and an opportunity to try modifications of possible releases in convivial company. I was pleased to talk with Thierry Bernard and to receive from him samples of the 2 new Parfumeurs de Monde, Terre de Soleil by Stephanie Bakouche – Sensaba and Les Fleurs de la Pluie by Thierry Bernard, (watch for Ida’s reviews).
Scentologia, Alkeme Collection, Memories d ‘Amour, Paradise des Sens.
Day 2 of Cannes 2024– Scentologia – The chance to go through the entire collection of Scentologia, notably the new release into the Alkene Collection, Immortal Potion, (read Karl’s review here), sublime concoction of swathes of pear and Ylang-Ylang. I also had a glimpse into the 2025 releases. In the same suite I discovered the complete collection of brands Memories D’Amour, Ciel du Paris and Tresor took my attention, Paradise Des Sens and Alfred Ritchy.
Ormonde Jayne Collection, Danu and Linda Pilkington, Ormonde Jayne 8 Day Advent Calendar at Cannes 2024
Ormonde Jayne was my next meeting at Cannes 2024 and it was a delight to see Linda Pilkington and Scott again. I was introduced to Kashmir and Bukhara, the newest additions, ( review of Bukhara by Nicoleta here). Linda also introduced me to some of the upcoming releases for 2025, gorgeous! Ormonde Jayne have just released for Christmas an 8 Day Advent Calendar, with a twist, it covers the 8 days between Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, for those days between festivities, containing an 88ml perfume, 4 travel sizes and the 3 seasonal candles.
Pissara Umavijani, Danu and Megan Paki- Dusita Cocktail, Nobile 1942 – I Rituali Collection, Lorenzo Pazzaglia, Nishane Party-Mert Guzal and Danu, Stephanie Bakouche and Danu at Cannes 2024.
That evening, a cocktail at Parfums Dusita Paris with dear Pissara, Mikael and team. A great evening and a little sneak preview of the next release and believe me its good. The evening continued at a party for a collection of Italian brands, Bois 1920, Masque Milano, Milano Fragranze, Malbrum, Soul Couture, Coreterno, Nobile 1942, Francesca Bianchi Perfumes and Phos.Beauty. The complete collection ‘I Rituali’ from Nobile 1942, I had already been entranced by Miguel Matos creation ’A Grazia’ (Nicoleta’s review here) and thanks to Manuela Nobile I tried ‘Anti-Malocchio’ by Marie Celeste Lombardo and ‘La Dea Bendata’ by Cristian Canali, all three are exceptional.
Chiara- Masque Milano, Alcove and The Donna Collection, Phos.Beauty, Upcoming release – Francesca Bianchi and Collection at Cannes 2024
Chiara from Masque Milano and Milano Fragranze took me through the new releases for Le Donne Collection, Diana, Catherine and Vaianna, also Alcove and 2023’s Ribot (reviewed by J here) for the Emerald Collection. For Milano Fragranze – Cortile and La Prima and previews with Lorenzo of Lorenzo Pazzaglia. Francesca Bianchi always the epitome of style gave me a preview of her upcoming release, it’s worth waiting for and a gorgeous take on a noble material-oud. Lucia from Phos.Beauty, products, blending science and conscience and the last stop for the evening to dance the night away was at the Nishane party, informal moments with many friends and colleagues, perfumers and brand owners, my thanks to Mert and Murat for the invitation and friendship.
Atelier des Ors – Villa Primerosa Grasse, New Abstraction Collection – Kawa Karda and Cocoa Kimiya.
Day 3 at Cannes 2024 – After a relaxing morning, I joined other content creators and press for an afternoon with Atelier des Ors at their new headquarters, Villa Primerosa in Grasse, a renovated classic house high on the Grasseois hills with a spectacular view. Laetitia welcomed us to the Villa and a tour of the garden and rooftop terrace. Lunch followed and then off to the atelier where we were introduced to the Abstraction Collection Extraits, 40% concentration, just a few days before its release. Inspired by the art of Pierre Soulages, the light that can be found in the deepest black, Kawa Karda – Coffee, deeply profound shot through with shafts of Cardamom, a luxurious clair- obscure and Cocoa Kimiya, contrasting darkness with light, swirls of momentary illumination. Arcane opulence. The visit concluded with an atelier in the art of gilding.
Kajal 10th Anniversary celebration, Vincent Ricord, Cocktail, Danu and Vyvienne Buch, Moe Khalif of Kajal, 10th Anniversary Limited Edition Lamar Noir
The evening posed a grand finale, a celebration cocktail and dinner of Kajal 10 years Anniversary, we were treated to a marvelous dinner and cocktail, entertained in traditional Kajal manner and with very moving speeches in tribute to the past 10 years and the vision of Moe Khalaf. Here is a sense of family, and to surprise him, a happy 10th anniversary video was created where his friends-in-fragrance (Including our own Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief), perfumers and business associates showed their highest regards. I also visited the Kajal showroom and spent a great session with Moe, Nathalie and Roxanna trying modifications for future additions to the Kajal Collection.
Meo Fusciuni – Giuseppe Imprezzabile and Federica Caste, Meo Fusciuni – new perfume Buio, Astrophil and Stella – Alessandro Castagno, Astrophil and Stella Collection.
Day 4 at Cannes 2024- To start the day, an appointment with my dear friends Giuseppe Imprezzabile and Federica Caste of Meo Fusciuni and their newest perfume, Buio, which means darkness. Here are those moments where all is stilled and in that purity of release to the lost, here we find the truth of ourselves and all is illuminated in a clarity before hidden in the depths. A magnificent work of art through which we hear with his eyes and view with his soul. I was also able to pass a little time in conversation with Alessandro Castagno from Astrophil and Stella, uncommon interests and the chance to delve into their magnificent collection.
Pedro Dias and Danu- Comporta, Femme Fougere, The Hellenist Collection and Founder Jean-David Jacoby at Cannes 2024.
Cannes 2024 gave me opportunities to spend time that is rare at Esxence for instance, so I was thrilled to meet with Pedro Dias, the founder of Portuguese brand Comporta Perfumes and perfumers Stephanie Bakouche and Bertrand Duchaufour. Great conversations and again insights into the future direction. I encountered Comporta and Stephanie a few years ago and now have the sense that it is on a rising wave. A lot of personal favourites among the ones to come, Femme Fougere, Ocaso and Will are my choice from the current collection. A new discovery in Cannes, a French brand The Hellenist founded by Jean-David Jacoby, we immediately found a point of reference as the brand is inspired by his love of everything Hellenic, from legend to landscape. I found all three initial perfumes very pleasing with names that reflect the ancient culture of the Hellenes. Les Bras de Morphee took my interest straight away. Addictive and softly lulling. Also, a collection of candles, in porcelain vessels decorated by artist, Carlo Amen, Celestial Harvest with its warm, gourmand comfort was my choice. All has been created with high quality materials and utilizing the new energy of young perfumers, a brand to watch.
Oman Luxury Team and Colleagues, Oman Luxury Collection, Sarah Baker upcoming surprises, Danu and Sarah Baker, Plume Impression – Sabine, Danu and Gabriel, Plume Impression at Cannes 2024
Oman Luxury, we were treated as usual to their immense hospitality, renowned in Oman. They present a collection of rare quality highlighting the tradition, extraordinary culture and high perfumery components of their country. We had an insight into two new perfumes, both exceptional on skin, one will be an exclusive for Harrods. Muadth took us on a voyage of the future, a brand-new development for the brand that will first pass a year on release in Oman and after, in our direction. I cannot divulge anything but there were 3 that I instantly loved. Impressive. Off to the suite of Sarah Baker, Plume Impression, Thomas de Monaco and Strangelove. It was great after our evenings of dancing at the parties to sit and talk with Sarah Baker and Megan Paki. Again, a lot in the pipeline for this truly artisanal brand combining theatrics, drama and perfume. New facets on existing perfumes are arriving soon in a highly anticipated development. I reconnected with Sabine and Gabriel from Plume Impression. Perfect late afternoon to explore a brand-new collection to be released next year, three new perfumes with a connecting thread. They are very good and the two I tried on skin, exceptional. Plus, they introduced a selection of size options for their perfumes.
Ojar event, Solar Flair new perfume, Ojar Collection, Goldfield and Banks Mystic Bliss at Cannes 2024.
The evening progressed with an invitation to the Ojar Cocktail Event, Ojar is a brand I admire greatly, their collection features Frankincense of course and I was invited to discover their new release, along with themed cocktails, ‘Solar Flair’ is a delicate and luminous honeyed floral, bright and softly nuanced with a delicacy of pollen lifted in air. Ojar encompasses a way of perfumed life they have perfumed oil absolutes and body mists to give a complete luxurious immersion. Then to Goldfield and Banks and founder Dmitri Weber celebrating the release of Mystic Bliss (reviewed here by Steven), with a dinatoire and cocktail. Featuring a unique component of Kunzea. I also met with Olivier Cresp at the event and spoke briefly with the founders of Fabbrica Della Musa – Barbara Adelman and Master Perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani, a conversation to be continued. The night finished with a dinner of friends including Sriman Subramanian from Sasva Perfumes and a preview of something brewing, just gorgeous, their next perfume release, 2025 will be an excellent year.
Jean-Phillipe Clermont – Atelier des Ors
Final morning at Cannes 2024- The first part of the morning was spent in company with Francois Henin of Jovoy Paris, a little interview in the time he had available and a private meeting with Jean-Phillippe Clermont of Atelier des Ors. Then time to fly home, until next year.
