Southern California, is known for its weather and beaches. Venice, one of the more celebrated beaches is known for its canals, promenade, Muscle Beach, boardwalk, street performers, trendy art scene, and shopping. Many movies and television shows have been filled in Venice, such as Baywatch and Barbie. How did Venice get its name? Venice was developed by a man named Abbot Kinney. After taking a walking tour of Venice, Italy, Kinney was determined to bring that level of grandeur to the States in the form of a resort destination. He chose southern California because of its beauty and ideal climate. Abbot Kinney was an entrepreneur and visionary who was crucial in developing Venice as a unique coastal resort town. In the late 19th century, Abbot Kinney purchased a vast stretch of marshy land in the area now known as Venice. Abbot Kinney Boulevard has long been one of the Westside’s most iconic, eclectic, and eye-catching streets. It’s a mile-long road lined with shops, restaurants, and galleries, stretching from Washington Boulevard to Main Street. This bustling district stretches from Venice Boulevard to Pacific Avenue and is a popular destination for Boho chic shoppers. Dubbed “the coolest block in America” by GQ, Abbot Kinney is home to one-of-a-kind local goods as well as internationally recognized brands. Add D.S. & Durga Venice Boutique to that list.

I’m always happy to visit Los Angeles, my hometown. On my recent trip, I stayed in Marina Del Rey which is a brief Uber ride away from Venice Beach. I made a point to visit the new D.S. and Durga Venice Boutique. Kavi and David Moltz’s Brooklyn-based fragrance brand D.S. & DURGA opened the West Coast Flagship Store on June 8, 2023. Located on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach it was the third location in the United States (they have since added their fourth boutique on the Upper East Side of Manhattan). Kavi, who went to grad school at the Southern California Institute of Architecture collaborated once again with with Krista Ninivaggi of the firm Woods Bagot on the Venice store. The concept was to craft a space that contrasted the Brooklyn store but retained the brand’s identity by incorporating the concrete edges and materials of the New York store but weaving in warmer woods and sandier tones to evoke a Californian feel.

D.S. & Durga Pacific Mystic Candle

D.S. & Durga Pacific Mystic Candle

To commemorate the boutique’s opening, D.S. & Durga created an exclusive to the Los Angeles store, the Pacific Mythic Candle. Wanting to put an East Coast slant on Californian culture, it floats with notes of palm, avocado leaf, star jasmine, and magnolia. It’s what the brand calls “An East Coast kid’s vision of western waves, towering palms, and blooming bushes basking in vivid Venice sunshine.”

When setting up my trip to the Left Coast I reached out to Julie Zeltser, D.S. & Durga’s Retail Director who made the introduction to Jonathan Cummings, the Venice boutique Sales Lead. Arriving Thursday, August 22nd, I was welcomed by Jonathan and Aamna Ahmed, PT Sales Associate. On entering my focus was drawn to the design of the boutique. In contrast to the East Coast stores, the colors and textures are carefully curated to show off the store’s West Coast sensibility.

D.S. & Durga Venice Boutique Fragrance Table

 D.S. & Durga’s Venice Boutique Fragrance Table

The sharp edges of the brand’s East Coast boutiques have been tempered. Douglas Fir is presented in the accents and shelving, with walls that have a curvature that softens the minimal scheme, and sandy tones and darker earthy hues in the brown concrete floors reflect the locale while maintaining the Durga vibe. Front and center is the Fragrance Table which has over forty scents and candles that invite exploration into the brand’s cutting-edge world. One is free to delve into the fragrances undisturbed if one likes or you can engage the staff to assist in suggestions. My eye caught the recent sample set, The Sunshine Set of three fragrances (Rose Atlantic, Coriander, and Debasser) displayed at the top of the Fragrance Table. Now this is a great way to take home some of that Cali sunshine!

D.S. & Durga Venice Wall display and Scent Quiz selector

Wall display and Scent Quiz selector

Similar to the NoLita boutique, behind the counter are live samples from the New York working lab of David Moltz, the brand’s in-house perfumer. Opposite the counter, is the Scent Quiz selector. Just like the brand’s website version where customers can take the Sniff Quiz Test by answering five simple questions to help find their top 4 fumes. The Gallery at the back of the boutique serves to highlight special collections and collaborations. The walls are coated in a gleaming metal alloy that appears to change shapes as the programmable LED lighting system is tuned to different hues, allowing visitors to undergo a synesthetic experience. We certainly are not in Kansas!

Debaser Soft Services iconic Buffing Bar display

The D.S. & Durga Hand, Soap, and Body Care line is well presented here and it does suit the California ethos. Jonathan and Aamna made a point to highlight the display for the recent collaboration with Soft Services the body skin experts™ which marries their cult-fave Debaser fume with their iconic Buffing Bar. Smelling of the warm, airy essence of ripe fig, iris, coconut milk, Tonka, and dry blond woods is sure to be an in-demand feature. Voila, Debaser Buffing Bar Microcrystal Exfoliant!

Before departing, I had a few questions for Jonathan and Aamna. I was curious about the breakdown of the store’s demographics. They told me that as of now, it’s pretty close to 50 percent tourists and 50 percent locals, and the store skews slightly more female than male. I was curious if the buying is more personal or for gifting. It appears most are purchasing for themselves. How many are on staff here? That would be Jonathan Cummings – Sales Lead, Aamna Ahmed – PT Sales Associate, Leah Gomez – General Manager, and Daisy Velasquez – PT Sales Associate

  • As a SoCal native, I appreciate the quintessential aesthetic we’re known for, and I adore the note of Pistachio and Cardamon. A green nutty savory note that is so diverse and bold with the added spiciness of Cardamon, this scent seems perfect for Fall,

  • I had no idea that’s how Venice, CA came to be but of course I had a suspicion it was inspired by Italy. DS Durga have been cranking out fragrances lately and it’s about time they get some time in the spotlight. Live the simple and airy aesthetic of the store and that will definitely be a stop on my next trip to California. I figured Pistachio was going to be one of their best sellers as it is a beautiful gourmand fragrance. Pistachio is having a moment now in perfumery and DS & Durga were one of their best sellers first ones to explore the note thoroughly on a fragrance. I’m not familiar with the others mentioned here but this is a house that I’ve been dying to get to know a bit more. A beautiful trio indeed it was for Hernando. Cheers from the USA

  • I enjoyed the questions what were asked to the co-owners and I enjoyed looking at the top seller list. I do like the Boston Ivy from the house. US

  • I absolutely loved reading Hernando’s visit to the D.S. & Durga Venice Boutique! The way he described the whole vibe of the store — from the Cali-inspired design with warm woods and sandy tones to the cool scent quiz and that amazing Pacific Mystic candle — made me want to book a flight just to check it out! I also thought it was interesting how the store feels like a perfect blend of East Coast edge with West Coast chill.

As for my fave D.S. & Durga scent? Definitely Radio Bombay — that creamy sandalwood mixed with coppery notes is everything. But after reading this, I really need to try Pistachio too.

    Hi there,

Oh I loved reading about a visit to Venice, in general, as I used to live out there. It sounds like our friends at DS & Durga have created a very welcoming space! I loved seeing the Top 5 list, and have to say that Coriander is my favorite scent from them. Thank you! I live now in NYC/USA.

  • I always think it’s wise and glorious when a brand gently adapts their imagery and aesthetic to coincide with the location they’re partaking in. A nod and genuflect to community they’re entering. Hernando’s historical precursor of how Venice came to be was such a wonderful invitation to his article and DS&Durga’s introduction. Debaser was my first introduction years ago, since then I’ve explored many DS scents with Radio Bombay reigning supreme currently. Though my curiosity is greatly piqued over Pistachio now!

  • I had fun reading the history of how Venice got its name. I will have to make a trip to Abbot Kinney Boulevard when I visit, and would love to check out the D.S. & Durga boutique. My favorite perfume by the house is Debaser, and am surprised it is not the top seller. I am in the US.

  • LuRon Anderson says:

I was impressed with the structural and design concepts of the store. To incorporate the roots of the North East with the laid-back free spirit of LA must have been quite the undertaking.

Though I do not own any of these fragrances yet, my favorite (of the 2 I’ve sampled) is Pistachio.
    Thank you,

    LuRon, Kennewick, WA

  • Gorgeous shop. I didn’t know they had a body care line (a local shop carries some of their fragrances). I love the list of the top sellers, I will check into those. I have found this line a bit more challenging and this list will help. I’ve never been to Venice. I hadn’t thought of Marina Del Rey in forever, used to go there as a kid to throw rocks in the water, walk and see the boats with my family. I have limited experience with this line, but my favorite is the Pistachio which I don’t own. Thanks for the chance. USa.

  • jessica.rauch says:

What a cool story about the history of Venice! I love how they translated the vibes of the NY store to the west coast! I live in NYC and need to check out DS & Durga here! I have not tried the brand yet but it’s been on my radar. The Pistachio fragrance seems like it would be a favorite!

  • If I ever make it to SoCal, I will have to make a pit stop at the boutique. It looks phenomenal! It can be hard to try a lot of fragrances (especially niche) in my area, so stores like this are a dream for me. I have managed to try a few from D. S & Durga and the quality is top notch. Pistachio, Debaser, Mississippi Medicine, and Amber Kiso are extraordinarily varied but equally impressive. Amber Kiso is one of the most transportive fragrances I’ve ever tried. Pistachio was one I recently obtained through ScentBird and it is great! I’d love to add it to my collection, Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Jae Harris Johnson says:

As an L.A. native, I appreciate Hernando’s detailed account of how the brand has created a store experience that reflects the region the store belongs to instead of a carbon copy of an East Coast edgy aesthetic. Los Angeles definitely has some grit and edge to her too, but Abbot Kinney is more so known for its old school beach vibes with a healthy dash of hippie charm. Moreover, Hernando’s visit makes me want to drive across town to also visit this lovely new addition to Venice. To answer the second question, I don’t have a favorite D.S. & Durga fragrance yet, but I am a fan of Radio Bombay.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

I’d love to see D.S. & Durga in my hometown, as someone who doesn’t travel far, I appreciate the local storefronts here. A perfect for fall scent, Pistachio is a beautiful fragrance. My favorite so far of D.S. is Debaser. I live in Oregon.

  • Nice. I’ve been to the D.S & Durga store in NYC and now I get to visit the west coast store. It only about 20 minutes from my place. I don’t own any D.S & Durga’s at the moment but this pistachio fragrance sounds very interesting.

    Los Angeles Ca. USA

  • Love the historic overview of Venice here, it certainly is an eclectic place! Hernando’s review of the store makes it a must-visit for me. The notes sound intriguing, especially the pistachio cardamom combo in the top. My favorite DS & Durga perfume is their newly released Big Sur Eucalyptus EDP!
    Cheers from CA, USA

  • Reading about D.S. & Durga’s Venice Boutique made me wish I could hop on a plane and explore the space myself. The way the store blends its Brooklyn roots with California’s laid-back vibes is such a cool concept. I love how they’ve incorporated the sandy tones and earthy hues to reflect the Venice Beach locale, while still maintaining that edgy D.S. & Durga identity. The attention to detail in everything from the store’s design to the exclusive Pacific Mythic Candle, which adds an East Coast twist to the West Coast landscape, really stands out. It’s clear that D.S. & Durga’s Venice location is not just about selling fragrances but creating an immersive, sensory experience that perfectly fits the neighborhood’s eclectic and artsy spirit.

  • Very interesting article. I had no idea of SoCal’s history, never been to California but plan on visiting one day. The inspiration for this fragrance peaks my interest, I love when a fragrance tells a story or can transport you to a place. Can’t wait to try this one. My favorite from this house is Radio Bombay.

  • One of the best nutty fragrances out there. I’m not usually a fan of gourmands, however Pistachio brings new character to this profile that I truly enjoy!

  • I enjoyed the post, in particular the intro about Venice and the store description. I’m wearing St. Vetyver right now, which my favorite among the ones I tried from DS & Durga. I would love to try the Pistachio.

  • I appreciate that D.S. & Durga put effort into making their Venice location reflect a West Coast sensibility and not just try and replicate the NoLita boutique. I have tried many of their scents and I do love the spice, vanilla and nuts of the Pistachio Eau de Parfum. It’s definitely a gourmand for grownups, MD, USS.

  • Thank you Hernando. It’s great that one can explore the fragrances undisturbed as overly aggressive sales people are a put-off for me and I prefer to form my own opinions. Never thought I’d see pistachio notes in a fragrance yet here we are and it sounds lovely 🙂 I’m in USA

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

Whoa this store sounds so cool. I loved seeing the most popular perfumes. I love debaser. I’d love to win the pistachio!

  • Jared Overbeck says:

I enjoyed how detailed this explanation/review was. I haven’t had much time to collect perfumes yet, so I don’t have a favorite D.S. & Durga fragrance yet, but it sure sounds like a delicious combination, especially with that Tonka Bean smokiness as it meets the rest of the scent. It’s such a detailed and verdant combination of both fruity, veggie, and synthetic scents layered over each other’s I’d love to smell every perfume in their line.

I’m J. I frequently comment on these giveaways and I’d be so thrilled if I won a scent that I didn’t have to make myself.

    Thanks again!

  • Thank you Hernando for such a great tour of the West Coast D.S. & Durga Abbey Kinney Blvd. store. I have a trip planned later this year not far from there and will be sure to stop in and say hello to Jonathan and Aama.I will say Hernando sent me!
My favorite D.S. & Durga is Cowboy Grass. I have never smelled pistachios in perfumes so I would love to win.

  • What a magical experience it must be at one of these boutiques. I’d love the opportunity to go to one in the near future. My experience with this brand began with FragranceGuy Sebastian recommended the “I Don’t Know What” as something that just did it with his body chemistry especially after sweating. I immediately tried it out along with Italian Citrus and Cowboy Grass. I feel like there was another about a very particular kind of cactus or flower found in New Mexico or something. I was hooked on I Don’t Know What (literally). Pistachio sounds delightful. I reside in NJ

  • A D.S. & DURGA boutique fits right in among the styles and vibes in Venice Beach and the brand clearly put some work into translating its Brooklyn edge to a California storefront. I love the museum-style placard in front of the Pacific Mythic candle; cool, a bit whimsical, and hiply self-serious. The blue-wave motif on the central island is also a nice touch. It looks like a great space to relax in, sampling their sizable range of perfumes, or try a familiar scent in a new product. Reading the top-sellers, I’m not surprised to see Debaser up there. It’s an ideal wear for hot summer days and the D.S. & Durga fragrance I’m most familiar with—my sample is almost tapped.

    I’m in the USA.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Hernando did a wonderful job of allowing me to experience DS & Durga’s Venice, CA boutique through his eyes. The Sniff Quiz Test sounds like a great resource for finding one’s favorite scent.

Pistachio Eau De Parfum has all the alluring notes that speak to my olfactive soul…pistachio, more pistachio, and EVEN MORE PISTACHIO. This is my kind of fragrance.
