Headspace’s perfumes capture a specific moment with their headspace technology letting the perfumers make these memories come alive expanding them, like Santal, which was the standout for me when I first smelled my way through their beautiful Discovery Box. In Headspace Santal, Senior perfumer Julien Rasquinet of CPL Aromas cleverly uses sandalwood as a structure to deliver a stunning vintage champagne accord full of red fruits, letting the woodier facets form the after taste/dry down of the aroma, as its left to haunt your skin like a delicious memory that flickers fresh in your mind, one that you can meditate on and enjoy throughout out the day.

Headspace Santal bursts on your skin like thousands of tiny champagne bubbles effervescing, gently releasing red berry aromas along with whispers of orange peel giving it a brightness, though Santal’s champagne accord has a more special aged vintage feel and depth giving you lots to enjoy. Dry soft powdery woods slowly envelope your body, as they would your tongue, as if it’s kissing you. The champagne’s delicious dark citruses and apple tartness is there too, its sour makes the sweet bloom with a whisper of deep lychee fruitiness, it also hints of a floral honeyed intensity, green like linden blossoms, but ones that are trapped deep within this complex rich and rather stunning champagne accord. It’s by far one of the best champagne notes I’ve smelled, giving a luxurious feeling, as its aroma envelopes you from its opening moments.

Phoebe Bridgers Boygenius

Ingrid Bergman once said “A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.” Headspace Santal has that breezy weightless playful feel that reminds me of the beautiful sensation of as well as the hours after you first kiss someone new. Perfume has this innate power to say more than words can as it unlocks memories and feelings. Its champagne pop and fizz deliver this seemingly endless tantalising sensation that leaves you in this floating hazy state, while also being effortless and fun. In the opening verse of ‘Me & my Dog’ Phoebe Bridgers, as part of the super-group Boygenius, beautifully encapsulates that elusive feeling that often defies description, leaving words feeling inadequate, yet it is the actions and occurrences surrounding that moment that express this beautiful abstract emotion, its universal nature resonates with us. Just as the meaning of when our lips intertwine, says more than words can full emote.

We had a great day/Even though we forgot to eat/And you had a bad dream/Then we got no sleep/’Cause we were kissing’ –‘Me & my Dog’ Songwriters: Lucy Dacus / Julien Baker / Phoebe Bridgers

Rose brings a playful elegance to the champagne; with saffron giving a richness that makes the rose petals feel all sensual and velvety. It turns the vintage champagne into a sparkling pink one, giving Santal a bright bubbly feel, flirty and fun with its soft bubbles popping lightly releasing its soft fruity aromas. It’s like a selection of red berries has been muddled in the glass with some flickers of cherry, strawberry and raspberry giving sweet little kisses around you as the musky woody bready undertones and tart apple of the champagne envelope you in a luxurious hug.

Santal’s dry down is where you find the sandalwood feeling more pronounced. Pairing it with that delicious vintage champagne accord is rather clever as the champagne picks up on sandalwood’s slight sour creaminess, like you’re tasting the grapes used to make the drink along with its tart apples from the opening. Sandalwood’s smooth powdery creaminess also gives you that sensation of champagnes warmth and feel as it flows down your throat letting its rich sensation envelope you. Again, the feel of kissing someone for the first time is invoked, that wild bubbly energy of excitement that turns into a warm fuzzy sensation, as the feeling flows through your body making you feel weightless is captured beautifully here in Headspace Santal the musky powdery woods of the base make your feel like its floating.

The earthy balsamic patchouli and vetiver adds to the soft wood dryness, making it slightly smoky with a hint of resins, as a soft incense aroma thickens things up, giving you this clear focus the moment your in. Here in perfume form, Santal stretches out that sensation delightfully for hours. The red fruits end up feeling deeper in tone, like softly swollen lips from an evening of kissing, as the velvety saffron rose leaves you in a soft yet elegant floral glow. Headspace Santal feel like one of those amazing nights of falling for someone new, it bubbles with excitement then lets you linger in the musky woody pleasurable haze remembering those sweet fruity kisses as the champagne bubbles gentle fizzle on your skin forming a creamy incense like mist of memories.

Notes: Red Fruit Accord, Rose, Saffron, Sandalwood, Olibanum, Patchouli Heart, Vetiver.

  • I absolutely love champagne in a fragrance and this paired with sandalwood sounds like a bubbly dream. Anything giving an incense aroma count me in. This fragrance is described as falling for someone new and the memory of them lingering. The story sounds phenomenal.

  • I’m really intrigued by the combination of sandalwood and vintage champagne! The idea of a perfume that captures that effervescent, bubbly sensation, and then transitions into a warm, woody dry down is so unique. The way J describes it as reminiscent of the excitement of a first kiss is beautiful—definitely adding Headspace Santal to my must-try list.

  • The Unique Blend of Notes: The combination of creamy sandalwood, red fruits, and warming saffron creates a rich and intriguing scent profile. This blend promises a balance of sweetness, warmth, and a touch of spice, making it both comforting and exciting this element really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I’ve wanted to try Headspace Santal for ages! I love J’s description of the champagne accord in particular. The fruits and sandalwood sound dreamy as well. Thanks for the opportunity to win! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Julien Rasquinet is an outstanding perfumer and I like his work. Santal sounds like an elegant scent with champagne accord. From EU.

  • J described Santal as an absolutely delightful, effervescent, playful and romantic fragrance. I find it quite mischievous that a perfume bearing this name would actually illustrate such a graphic impression of champagne; yet, this fizzy, youthful, slightly “stupefying” drink infused with tart citrus, berry, apple and linden notes, can only lift the sandalwood to another dimension, characterized by excitement, pleasure and a sense of adventure.
    Greetings from the EU.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Julien Rasquinet does great work with fruit notes in fragrances and now I’ve learned he pretty much does great work with any note. It’s interesting J mentioned he gets a champagne like sensation with this fragrance despite it not have any boozy notes but it’s rather when the intertwine with one another that you get this sensation. Rose and saffron work wonderfully in fragrances mixing that spicy-ness with the softness of roses truly making any fragrance properly unisex. This is not a house I’m familiar with but I’ve read up on them before here and it looks like the line tries to focus on a note for each fragrance despite all being very complex ones. Also the creamy undertone is one of my favorite qualities of this fragrance as I tend to gravitate to those types of scents. A great review! I’m located in the US.

  • mcclellan929 says:

I think most of Rasquinet’s stuff resonates with me. Some is more synthetic than I’d like, but this sounds like it strikes the right balance. I love champagne accords (Masque’s L’Attesa, e.g.), and the red berries here sound like they touch upon those in Rasquinet’s The Moon, the combo with patchouli and rose also sound exciting, conjuring images of Malle’ “Portrait” but with brighter touches. Super excited by this! I’m in San Diego, USA.

  • How lovely! I really enjoyed reading this article. Many memories were invoked and many nostalgic feelings (I’ve been married for many years. We still get the fireworks kiss, but the initial First Kiss magic is singular and lives on only in memories, like it does for everyone.) I also would like to smell the champagne note, as it can be a very difficult note to produce without waxy effects. This one sounds wonderful! I live in the US.

  • David Furman says:

This sounds delicious beginning with the red fruits. The champagne accord brings complexity and hopefully has the effervescent glow that comes with the real thing. The base of sandalwood, olibanum, patchouli, and vetiver makes me think it goes in a smooth mossy and woods smell that lasts throughout. I believe this as just short of beast mode and I love scents that really stick around and have character and complexity. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • I am in thr US. I am curious about this new Sandalwood and perfumer’s interpretation of thr note

  • I love how J painted the imagery of the red fruits and the champagne accord. The contrast between the tart apple and the creamy sandalwood sounds divine. Plus, I’m a huge fan of perfumes that have a musky, incense-like finish. This review really makes me want to experience that luxurious, warm sensation for myself!

  • The mix of rose, saffron, and sandalwood with the vintage champagne note sounds absolutely stunning. I’m particularly curious about how the fragrance evolves on the skin, from the playful, bubbly top notes to the smoky, woody base. J’s description of it as a “creamy incense-like mist of memories” really caught my attention—can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

  • Did someone say champagne? I’m all ears!
J sparked my interest by claiming that this is “by far one of the best champagne notes he’s smelled, giving a luxurious feeling, as its aroma envelopes you from its opening moments” and that alone is a good enough reason for me to pick up a bottle!
    Hugs from Croatia, EU ❤️

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Digging this scent profile. I love sandalwood and teamed up with a red fruit accord sounds really nice. I don’t think I have anything like that in my collection.

I like how J said “Perfume has this innate power to say more than words can as it unlocks memories and feelings”. I totally agree. Cheers!

  • J described this perfume in a way I find it completely irresistible: Headspace Santal bursts on your skin like thousands of tiny champagne bubbles effervescing, gently releasing red berry aromas along with whispers of orange peel giving it a brightness, though Santal’s champagne accord has a more special aged vintage feel and depth giving you lots to enjoy. Dry soft powdery woods slowly envelope your body, as they would your tongue, as if it’s kissing you.

  • Sandalwood, rose, and champagne sounds very interesting, plus Julien Rasquinet is a very talented Parfumeur. I’m excited to try this new creation from Headspace!

  • First, thank you for the review, J Wearescentient. I really loved the way you associate real sensations with the development of this scent on the skin.

Second, thank you Headspace for the chance to try Santal, the notes lineup sound fantastic!

Finally: Let it bursts on my skin like thousands of tiny champagne bubbles!

  • Oh, my! This review sent my heart fluttering with the pictures it painted! I am really curious to see how the champagne and the sandalwood work together. You got me with the words velvety and vintage.

Thank you for the generous giveaway. I live in Missouri, USA

  • I love champagne in general and I also love it in a fragrance, so this Headspace’s Santal is right up my alley. I also really liked J’s description of the red fruits in it — “end up feeling deeper in tone, like softly swollen lips from an evening of kissing”. I live in Italy, EU.

  • I tried the discovery set from Headspace and Santal was certainly a standout among the collection. A love the unique approach to this woody note with the rose and saffron, just beautiful!

  • This is a new house to me and red fruits are some of my favorite notes in fragrances! Definitely going to keep my eyes on this house.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

This could be the only champagne I can enjoy. As a sober person of nearly 5 years, I can still appreciate a fragrance with champagne in the forefront. Though not a fan of boozy fragrances, champagne has an entirely different quality that can be enjoyed by everyone. Sandalwood pairs here joyously with the fizzy, fruity notes and I’m onboard with it. I live in Oregon.

  • Really liked this part ‘Headspace Santal has that breezy weightless playful feel that reminds me of the beautiful sensation of as well as the hours after you first kiss someone new’. Sounds right up my alley! Thanks

  • J the review is incredible. Julien Rasquinet is so talented. I love the idea of a champagne accord and sandalwood. I own Genievre which I bought and is so summery after reading about it here on Cafleurebon. I think Headspace bottles are so clean and modern too. USA

  • jessica.rauch says:

This fragrance sounds amazing! I love the champagne bubbles mixed with fruit and the patchouli to ground it. Rasquinet is an excellent perfumer so this should be a dream! -New York, NY

  • Santal sounds so romantic and lovely and everything an Autumn fragrance should be! That cuffing season vibe. I love a great myrrhe and sandalwood fragrance and rose/vetiver/saffron is a classic combo, so is saffron and labdanum! This sounds perfectly balanced. I am in California.

  • It sounds very captivating. Mix of blend of celebration and elegance, with a champagne accord that brings to mind the effervescent joy of a special occasion. I can’t imagine the explotion when you have saffron, rose, and sandalwood together., especially when mixed with the deep, vintage champagne notes, seems like it would create a unique and luxurious scent experience. I’m particularly excited about the rose and saffron elements, I love fragrances with these notes. Living in New York City, I’m always on the lookout for distinctive scents, and this one sounds like it would be a perfect addition to my collection. I live in US.

  • It seems like the combo of champagne and sandle wood has everyone’s attention. Intrigued on the red berry mix. I haven’t sampled anything from the brand but the discovery box is calling my names. I live innthe US

  • I’m intrigued by the headspace technology. Scent is really tied to memories and the attempt to capture a specific moment using this technique is fascinating. The combination of sandalwood with effervescent champagne on an earthy, smoky base sounds wonderful. MD, USA.

  • I love Ingrid’s quote. Tiny bubbles with red fruits and zesty citrus sounds delicious. I love a touch of incense in a fragrance. You can’t go wrong with sandalwood in the base. I am not familiar with this brand, but I like the minimalist bottle. Thanks for great read. USA.

  • That champagne accord certainly caught my interest. I really like the sound of bubbly champagne and ref fruits. Sounds sumptuous. Julien Rasquinet is quickly becoming one of my favorite perfumers and I am eager to see what he has done here. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • An eloquent review that beautifully connects the scent to emotions and experiences. The notes sound wonderful, particularly the creamy sandalwood with rose and saffron. The description of the champagne accord makes me picture this scent as one that brings joy to the wearer.
Also, a big fan of the headspace technology! We use headspace gas chromatography in chemistry research to detect gases and volatile liquids, and the use of this technology in perfumery is genius!
    Cheers from CA, USA

  • wonderscent.mari says:

Champagne bubbles with a complex wood notes and berries sound really tempting and intriguing! The whole description could be an ideally first kiss and a romantic celebration of first love too! I am very curious to this sizzling effect combined with the fruity hints of berries and the velvet aroma of roses against a warm and creamy sandalwood! A scent of aspirational festivities!
Thanks for this opportunity to participate!
    Greetings from Germany!

  • I was already intrigued before reading the review because one of my favorite perfumes, Champagne de Bois by Sonoma Scent Studios, centers around an effervescent champagne and sandalwood heart. It’s such a natural pairing I always thought it was a missed opportunity that more perfumers don’t explicitly build perfumes around that concept. J’s description of the ‘whisper’ of lychee really excites me because I happen to enjoy putting a bit of lychee liquor into brut champagne for a festive drink. Headspace Santal sounds fun and dreamy. I’m in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Deborah L Murphy says:

    Hi there,

I am most intrigued by the use of patchouli, as well as sandalwood, in SANTAL from Headspace. I live in NYC. Thank you!!!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds really beautiful and the way you describe the way the champagne picks up the sour creaminess of the sandalwood sounds gorgeous. You really make this fragrance sound so romantic. I have been noticing champagne is being used more frequently in fragrance and I’m loving seeing these new and interesting combinations. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • Headspace fragrances are so compelling, and Santal is a surprising take on champagne accord and its namesake wood. It sounds both fruity and effervescent for much of the wear, with the creaminess of sandalwood defining the texture of the dry down. Lovely take on a saffron and rose tinged gourmand. Great review.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Sandalwood, saffron and rose make Santal really promising! I loved Ingrid Bergman’s quote “A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous. I find it directly related to J’s review.
    From EU.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved J’s review of Headspace Santal. This is a house that I’ve heard so many great things about this brand and their mission. I loved learning the inspiration behind this fragrance being Ingrid Bergman 1960 and Phoebe Bridgers as part of Boygenius and that is was created by master perfumer Julien Rasquinet. This sounds like an amazing rose and saffron fragrance with the red fruits and beautiful Sandalwood. I am from the USA.

  • I love an earthy/woody rose fragrance. Sandalwood always pairs so nicely with rose. I’d never tried anything from Headspace before. I enjoyed this review and would love to try Santal.

    I live in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great writeup J!

Headspace interpretations of scents are always cool and it’s such a fascinating technology. It’s really creative that a sandalwood molecule was used to deliver a vintage champagne headspace.

The notes in this beautifully deconstruct the scent, especially the red fruit, rose, saffron and sandalwood.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • foreverscents says:

I love a fragrance that has a sparkling champagne note. The red fruit accord makes it even more delightful. I liked J’s mention of Ingrid Bergman and, in the next breath, a reference to Boygenius. The dry down of Santal, with its sandalwood and vetiver and patchouli notes, sounds like a perfect compliment to the effervescent notes.
    I live in the USA.
