I’m a big fan of Greek perfumer Angelos Balamis’ fragrances, he has a deep understanding of the history of perfumery that you can feel in his compositions, while also making them feel contemporary and fresh with the spin he adds. It was through ÇaFleureBon and winning a giveaway of Eau de Vertu that I first discovered his work, so its lovely to be here now writing about it.

Angelos’ latest perfume Pnoi, a stunning sleek and sexy powdery refined violet leather, has already sold out of its first batch  in the EU ( PNOI is at Luckyscent), and smelling a sample I can see why. His releases are like Supreme back in the day, where you have to be there for the drop, so while we wait for a restock I thought it would be lovely to revisit his first leather, Cuir Fleurissant. For me it’s a stunning take on the Cuir de Russie style that evokes so much more.

Angelos Creations Olfactives Cuir Fleurissant has this beautiful duality for me; one is nostalgic memories of my father returning from pottering in the garage, then washing the grease from his hands with a zesty citrus soap. Cuir Fleurissant bursts with a vibrant citrus freshness, layered with woody notes that gradually deepen into a smoky oily birch tar, casting a shadow over the initial brightness. Aldehydes and violet leaf creates a vast, clean sensation, while delicate abstract florals emerge blooming from soft, bitter greens. Cuir Fleurissant resonates with a subtle, intoxicating floral allure; here is the other essence of the duality, you can sense the emergence of narcotic blossoms from the shadows as a rich, dark leather ignites a deeper desire. The way the florals interweave with the darker aspects is stunning.

Angelos Creations Olfactives Cuir Fleurissant envelops you in a cosy sensual darkness, where a soft, powdery leather meets the creamy essence of orris, creating a luxurious, smoky texture that feels like crushed velvet. Sweet violets dance within this cosy darkness; little flickering sweet flames nestled in this powdery cocoon. A breath taking muguet emerges, the image of a cool clean lily of the valley kissed in a warm, smoky embrace, its pristine qualities darkened by rich woods and resins, while its petals have been gently toasted with a hint of vanilla.

Classic muguet illustration in the public domain.

The aldehydes and oily birch tar rise from this shadowy realm, creating a vertical thrust that makes more floral notes blossom. Deep in this leathery, dark wood and powdery musk, a darkly spiced rose unfurls, accompanied by the whisper of geranium thorns that suggest an underlying danger, while mimosa softens the feel of the petals, merging seamlessly into the silky, smoky darkness. It feels as though my father visited the garden to tend to the roses before washing away the day’s dark oils. As the fresh, soapy muguet and aldehydes work their magic; the garden blossoms gradually reveal themselves, blending into a musky warmth that lingers in the air above the powdery, velvety leather smoke.

‘A passion flower, honeysuckle, carnations, roses and other flowers on a stone ledge with a butterfly’ By Jan Pieter Breughel. circa 1660

Cuir Fleurissant hums with captivating dark elegance, the coolness of ashy leather; its soft, powdery depths contrast beautifully with a glowing floral warmth, floral embers flickering in the night. Delicate wisps of incense weave around the blossoms, unveiling layers of intrigue, while a subtle earthy patchouli hints at the flowers’ origins. The rich sandalwood notes create a seamless connection between the smoky, velvety leather and the brighter elements of Cuir Fleurissant, allowing both darkness and light to coexist harmoniously. As the petals are gently shaved away, fine wood shavings drift down, revealing a vibrant musky freshness, some the tender memories of a day gone by, embracing you in a velvety smoke that transforms into a woodsy, floral, ashy leather shield. The florals of Cuir Fleurissant persist, glistening with a silky birch tar oil that lends them a sleek quality. Angelos masterfully balances sweetness and floral notes, keeping the shadows at bay, while the musky floral leather envelops you, inviting you to sink into its soft embrace, allowing its sweet petals to cascade over you. While the opening and heart of evoke a sense of nostalgia, the dry down envelops me in a soft sensuality that makes me forget my father (sorry dad), as I long to be wrapped in Cuir Fleurissant’s smoky floral cocoon. This fragrance offers a stunning and unique interpretation of a Cuir de Russie style, reflecting Angelos’s passion for vintage and classic perfumery, yet maintaining a fresh and contemporary feel. Wearing his creations is always a delightful experience.

  • This review of Angelos Creations is really fascinating. The way it describes the blend of dark, powdery, and floral notes is fascinating. I was especially intrigued by how the review talks about flowers emerging from darkness to create an earthy, powdery scent. That idea sounds very philosophical and I love it. It makes me think of Tom Ford Black Orchid, a fragrance I really enjoy for its rich and mysterious quality. The review shows a picture that feels both sophisticated and intriguing, capturing the same kind of dark allure that I appreciate. I love reading the reviews of fragances I never heard about it and it helps me to expand my collection.

I live in New York City.

New house to me. Angelos Balamis has crafted a remarkable fragrance in Cuir Fleurissant, blending nostalgic elements with a contemporary twist that is both captivating and complex. The scent’s intricate layers of citrus, florals, and smoky leather create an experience that feels deeply personal, evoking memories while also inviting the wearer into a luxurious, modern embrace.

  • What strikes me about Cuir Fleurissant based on J‘s review is how beautifully it captures the duality of fresh and dark elements. The way it blends vibrant citrus and clean aldehydes with rich, smoky birch tar and delicate florals creates a complex and evocative fragrance. I’m particularly intrigued by the juxtaposition of the powdery leather and creamy orris, which, combined with the subtle hints of vanilla and musk, seems to offer a luxurious and sensual experience. J‘s description of it as a modern take on Cuir de Russie, with its nostalgic undertones and contemporary freshness, makes me eager to experience how it balances such intricate layers.

What a beautiful review for such a complex fragrance. The story told here describes a longing for the past while strutting confidently into the future. As something I struggle with, I could wear this and overcome. The notes described, though complex and many, seem stunningly beautiful to me combined together. I would love to win! I live in Oregon.

  • What stands out is its unique blend of floral and leather notes. The fragrance opens with a burst of Calabrian bergamot and violet leaf, followed by a heart of mimosa, Bulgarian damask rose, and orris butter. The base is rich with musk, benzoin, vanilla, and leather, creating a complex and sophisticated scent.
As for my favorite from Angelos Creations Olfactives, Danse Lascive is quite intriguing. It combines sensual and exotic notes, making it a standout in their collection. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

I sadly don’t own or have never tried any of Angelos Creations Olfactives but here’s to hoping that changes soon. Leather against floral notes is a proven formula that works and truly make the fragrance a unisex reference. Women will be attracted to it for the florals, men will gravitate to it because of the leather but one thing it’s for sure, it’s a beautiful combo. The way J explained this one is actually a bit more complex than what one can infer based on the notes and it goes from velvety, to sweet and fresh all the same time showing you the life and transitions of the fragrance. A true masterpiece creation by Angelos! I’m in the USA.

  • J paints such a vivid picture of all the contrasting and seemingly Kaleidoscopic elements in this perfume! The image of his father washing his oily hands is wonderful. I love the leather floral genre and want to try anything that’s in this catagory. This sounds like the highest quality. I’m in Brooklyn , NY.

  • Smoky crushed velvet? Violets dancing in darkeness? A Smoky floral cocoon? Count me in! This is right up my ally and custom-made for the approaching autumn! I live in the US. I have yet to try an Angelos Creations Olfactives fragrance, but this sounds like a great place to start!

  • In my humble opinion, Angelos Creations Olfactives is one of the finest indie houses in today’s market. Eau de Vertu, L’œillet, and Irida were all love at first sniff and instant purchases for me. I find it hard to pick a favorite from the three, but that rich, buttery orris in Irida is on a level all its own. Now, Cuir Fleurissant is one that I have not yet tried, but, man, it sounds wonderful. As soon as J started writing about the juxtaposition of clean and dirty notes, of florals against birch tar, the hair on my neck sprung up. I love scents like this, my current favorite being Tauer’s Lonestar Memories, so I am quite keen to see how Angelos has interpreted such a counterbalance of notes. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • Based on the review, what strikes me about Cuir Fleurissant is its unique blend of floral and leather notes.
The fragrance opens with a blast of Calabrian Bergamot followed by Smoky Rectified Birch Oil, Castoreum, and Caramelized Florals.
The Muguet Accord adds a signature touch, making it a delightful floral-leather perfume
As for my favorite from Angelos Creations Olfactives, I would choose Angeliki. It has a vintage chypre feel with a modern twist, combining classic chypre top and heart with an oriental base.
The floral accords of Wisteria, Lilac, and Fresia make it unique and beautiful

Velvety suede and birch tar complemented with flowery notes strikes my interest most. I live in the EU.

  • I do not know yet Angelos Creations Olfactives, but would love to try his fragrances. Violet leather falls right in my tastes, so Cuir Florissant sounds like the ideal entry point for me!

Big things can come in small packages and this is no exception. Wow, it hard to believe there’s so much going on in the 1oz tincture but it is. The citric and aldehydic opening sounds appealing but from there I picture a dark, mysterious journey. Lots of resins and tars but also smooth calming elements like the rose absolute and orris butter in the mid. I love orris as a mid it makes everything creamy and well rounded. Would love to figure out this mystery for myself, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • I find the balance between the light, floral elements of this fragrance and the darker, deeper aspects of it to be most striking. Cuir Fleurissant sounds elegant and sparkling at the same time, evening-appropriate and somehow, classily casual, fresh, yet warming. I was struck by the use of the words “dark” and “delicate” in a review regarding the same perfume, yet I find that promise to be most charming.
I have unfortunately not experienced any Angelos perfume so far.
    Cheers from the EU.

  • That’s cool that J has won a fragrance from this line and now has the opportunity to write about another. Lily of the valley with resins and tossed with vanilla has my interest. This fragrance has a lot going on and sounds like it will be perfect for the upcoming fall. Orris forward Irida has my heart. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Cuir Fleurissant sounds elegant yet edgy with its animalic leather base and bouquet of feminine florals, including one of my favorites, lily of the valley. The use of birch tar to counterbalance all the florals is interesting. I’m also impressed with the sourcing of the ingredients. It tells me that Angelos Balamis cares about composition and finding the finest quality. Unfortunately, I’ve never tried anything from Angelos Creations Olfactives. MD, USA.

  • Angelos Balamis has a unique ability to blend the rich history of perfumery with a contemporary twist, making his fragrances truly stand out. The way J describes Cuir Fleurissant is nothing short of mesmerizing—it’s as if you can almost feel the texture of the soft, powdery leather and the floral warmth intertwining in a delicate dance. The comparison to the nostalgia of a father’s day, contrasted with the sensuality of the fragrance’s dry-down, creates such a vivid and emotional narrative.

As a fan of Balamis’ work, especially after discovering his brilliance through Eau de Vertu (thanks to ÇaFleureBon!), it’s exciting to hear about the stunning success of Pnoi. I can’t wait to get my hands on a bottle. While waiting for a restock, revisiting Cuir Fleurissant seems like the perfect way to immerse oneself in Balamis’ world of olfactory elegance. His ability to evoke such deep emotions through scent is remarkable, and I’m eager to experience this ‘smoky floral cocoon’ firsthand.

This review really told a story for me and evoked great imagery. I love the idea of tending the roses and then washes the dark oils with a citrus soap. This fragrance sounds beautiful and I am a huge fan of leather. This is the first I have heard of this house and of Angelos Balamis but this review has me quite curious. Thank you for the draw. From the US.

  • I love this review of Angelos Creatives Cuir Fleurissant. Cuir de russie and dark florals.. Oh my.. Thanks for the tip on PNOI on luckyscent. I may blind buy

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the beautiful and touching review J. Paco Rabanne Pour Homme is one that brings memories of my dad back.

I love this fragrance, that harkens to the beauty of Cuir de Russie. Balancing birch tar is no easy feat and the perfumer has skillfully woven clean greens and citrues and heady florals along with leather and other supports to demonstrate his skill at reimagining vintage fragrances.

I would love to sample this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • J’s review conjures up such beautiful imagery, personal and yet universal, it’s hard to avoid feeling like I must try Cuir Fleurissant right away! The complexity of this perfume stands out to me immediately, and how the classic leather notes have been balanced not just by brighter citrus elements, but also with a wide range of florals. I would love to try Angelos’ “smoky floral cocoon” of a Cuir de Russie style perfume.

    Best wishes from NJ, USA!

  • While I haven’t tried any Angelos Creations fragrances, the reviews of Angelos Balamis’ work that I’ve read here highlight the impressive consistency of his recent releases. Cuir Fleurissant sounds compelling with its contrast between bright (“vibrant citrus freshness”) and dark (“Smoky oily birch tar”), with a classic combination of violet and powdery leather. I’m intrigued by the use of texture here: powdery leather, soapy aldehydes, silky tar, soft pedals, wafting smoke.

    I’m in the USA.

  • hippononamus says:

The contrasting dark notes with smoky birch tar and velvety leather with the sweet and floral notes is what intrigues me about Cuir Fleurissant. I’m in the US.

  • I love all of J’s textural descriptions of this perfume – silky, powdery, velvety, leathery – it sounds so complex and interesting! I’d love the chance to try it. Haven’t tried any perfumes from this brand yet but I’m excited for the opportunity! I’m in MN, USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I am here for the dark leather that ignites a deep desire. J’s review intrigued me, with his description of the dark elegant leather along
side the warm florals. Cuir Fleurissant shimmers with all its layers. Dark yet soft and velvety fragrances are the best. Duality at its fragrant finest.
    I live in the USA.

  • Violets, Powder and leather sound like a winning combination. I have been ablenso sample his Tobac and find it FBW. I would also love to try PNOI. Winning a bottle of this more Cuir de Russie style would be exciting. I live in the US
