Wit and West Fleur du Riad (Whitney Swales) 2021 + Le Jardin Secret Giveaway

Wit and West Fleur de Riad

Wit and West Fleur du Riad *

Located within the walls of the old city Medina, a Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an indoor garden and courtyard. Generally, the Riad is fully enclosed with rooms designed around the central courtyard and gathering area decorated with colored traditional mosaics called zellij. Fountains, plants, trees, and flowers are all part of the garden cultivated for enjoyment in this central area. The word “Riad” is derived from the Arabic word “رياض” which translates to “garden” in English.

Walking into the intimacy of a Riad courtyard, you will find a space that is square or rectangular in shape, set around the sahrîdj, a fountain or basin. The symbolism of the sahrîdj within the Riad cannot be understated. Water represents the vital life force of the family and the house, as it is a symbol of life in the desert. According to Islamic garden design, an inner garden focused around the water is much admired. It is likely to feature native citrus trees, palms, and jasmine. This fragrant oasis was created as a Wit and West Fleur du Riad, a liquid memory after natural perfumer Whitney Swales of Wit & West  journey to Morocco with her her husband Rob.

  Le Jardin Secret*

Wit and West Fleur du Riad opens with a seductive veil of animalic honey. This perceived note is surely the product of Moroccan Neroli with its powerful combination of effervescent citrus, verdant vegetation, sweet white florals, and indole. Green mandarin adds a juicy fruitiness and light silky texture, like saturated air on a hot summer night. Wit and West Fleur du Riad blooms with sultry sweetness and flirts with orange blossom milky floralcy enlivened with a sparkling aldehydic piquancy.

Jasmine du Riad shows itself to be more lovely and complex with time. Orange blossom entices with its sensual depth and complexity, tying the citrus floral aromas of the opening into the intensity of the heart. Indole-rich and warmly sweet, orange blossom is opulent and rich, balanced by a fine-drawn backbone of bitter-green grassiness that energizes the flush floral. Jasmine is a proper partner for this waltz of flowers. Musky and playful, the green, fruity, floral, spicy, and indolic character of jasmine grandiflorum matches the energy and temperament of orange blossom to perfection.

 while in Marrakesh*

A low and slow simmering smoke leads us to the dry down of Wit and West Fleur du Riad. Vetiver’s earthy and smoky tones bring us to sweet ground again after the great heights of our floral adventures in the heart. Resinous caramel, whiskey, and leather reach out here and there the way natural materials can enchant with their special complexity. Oakmoss with its deep forest floor, ancient seabed, and wet earth sooths and quiets the fragrance into its rightful place of this fragrant remembrance.

Notes: Moroccan neroli (citrus aurantium var. amara), green mandarin (citrus reticulata blanco), orange blossom (citrus aurantium var. amara), jasmine (jasminum grandiflorum), vetiver (vetiveria zizanioides), oakmoss (evernia prunastri)

What strikes me the most about Fleur du Riad is the celebratory joy it evokes as soon as the first burst of the opening notes bounces off my skin at first spritz. Kind of how joy or giddiness feels like when it is brewing and building up inside of you. A laugh that needs to be released. Joy that needs to be named. Romance you’ve been meaning to express outwardly. It’s so flirty and friendly. I have often felt as if Fleur du Riad stands in as a friend. It is mood lifting, it brings a joyous proclamation with its marriage of yellow petals. The quality is unmatchable in Wit & West. Very proud to don anything from this perfume house!

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to Michelyn for the review!

I’ve never smelled anything from Wit & West before, but Fleur du Riad sounds like it does a beautiful job conjuring a sense of place. I’d love to give it a try.

  • What strikes me about Wit and West Fleur du Riad is how it was created after natural perfumer Whitney Swales of Wit & West journey to Morocco with her husband Rob. It was interesting to read how the animalic honey opening was most likely the product of Moroccan neroli, neroli being one of my favorite notes in perfumery. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • Sounds lovely. I like honey notes in fragrances and the perceived honeyed neroli and orange blossom seems lush and exotic. The earthy vetiver and resinous caramel, whisky and leather notes support the indolic florals. Fleur du Riad sounds like a love letter to Morocco. I would love to try it. I’m in the US.

Wit and West Fleur du Riad sounds like a beautiful journey into the garden that inspired it. I am very excited to experience the waltz of flowers of jasmine and orange blossoms, and the dry down sounds lovely as well!

  • I absolutely love what Wit and West does with jasmine in Jasmine Pet Noi and would also love to see what they do with it here in combination with Moroccan neroli! Rachel paints a beautiful picture of a journey through the garden of a riad, starting with treetops and flowers (the top notes), and heading down into the dusty soil with the base notes of vetiver and oakmoss. I would love to smell this idea of bloom of life in the desert.
    Best wishes from the US!

  • What struck me about Rachel’s review of Fleur du Riad is her description of it opening with an animalic honey note, which is a note I happen to LOVE. I also love jasmine, so I’d love to try this perfume by Wit & West.

  • Really interesting review—I appreciate the introduction to Riad, sahrîdj, and the common botanical smells in traditional Moroccan gardens. Interesting that SWales chose to open Fleur du Riad with an animalic honey note; a hefty jasmine could have contributed plenty of indole on its own, but the combination with orange blossom must be heady. I’m also intrigued by the base, composed of notes that I love, but particularly when made with natural materials. Bold oakmoss is always welcome. I still need to try Wit and West and Fleur du Riad would be an excellent place to start.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Fantastic review. Wit and West are creating many gems that are outstanding and Fleur du Riad looks like one more to the collection.
I love the concept behind and the complexity of the fragrance makes me want it even more. I love the floral aroma it has and the caramel, whiskey and leather make me want to try it even more.

  • Thank you for the wonderful review! This is such an interesting and transportive fragrance.

I love the use of orange blossoms/neroli in the opening. It’s such a pretty note that permeates so much of the culture in that part of the world. The use of jasmine grandiflorum with it’s heady, atmospheric and open white floral adds to this. The drydown with vetiver and resiny, caramel notes also sounds really wonderful.

I also loved the pictures that were included in this review!

    Cheers from WI, USA
