Creative Director Neela Vermeire of Neela Vermeire Créations released Fragments by NVC collection in 2022. We had given you an overview earlier, but felt that the time has come to delve into Fragments by NVC Thyina (Thynia means sandalwood in Latin) in more depth, due to its remarkably reassuring and zenlike nature.

Perfumer Fabrice Olivieri

 Perfumer Fabrice Olivieri

Neela is fond of describing the Fragments by NVC Collection as “figments of our fragrant imagination”, and Thyina in particular as, “fragments of visual beige tender comfort.” At the time of its release, Neela abstained from revealing the perfumers involved, because she wanted to avoid any preconceived biases; we now know that Fabrice Olivieri composed Thyina – and this demonstrates Neela’s desire to venture forth into fresh territory (Nemus was composed by Bertrand Duchaufour; Purpureum, by Cristiano Canali). Each fragrance represents a unique aromatic shard in Neela’s triad conception of her own fragrant mosaic.

Synesthesia is an entirely intimate and subjective creature: while our creative director envisions velvety, suede-like beige hues, my immediate impression is that Fragments by NVC Thyina is garbed in pale wisteria tones, somewhere between a heavenly lavender and a muted thistle. The distinct soft-pedaled lavender (herbal-/floral-redolent) commingled with a poetic violet creates a powdery effect, one which waxes melodic. Another significant aspect is that Thyina’s initial burst feels bold, rippling with both the nutty aroma of hazelnut and a delicate bitterness which I attribute to coffee; interestingly, both hazelnut and coffee share a definite nuttiness which overlaps. I find this a compelling and unusual pairing which only contributes to Thyina’s individuality.

Over several hours into the drydown, both hazelnut and coffee simmer quietly, disclosing only a wraith of their former selves. Birch tar becomes a muted refrain; amyris and Australian sandalwood complement one another in smooth balsamic woodiness. Thyina’s base is profoundly resinous – with tolu balsam contributing its delicate vanillic/spicy nuance much as Peru balsam – minus the subtle smoky, animalic/leathery facets. Styrax bridges the commonalities of both – being richly balsamic, leathery, and sharing a woody/vanillic nature. My conclusive experience is that of a featherweight pashmina enveloping the wearer in a comfort which verges on the spiritual.

Time is endless in thy hands, my lord. There is none to count thy minutes. Days and nights pass and ages bloom and fade like flowers. Thou knowest how to wait. Thy centuries follow each other perfecting a small wild flower.” ~ excerpt from Endless Time by Rabindranath Tagore

Notes: pimento berry, lavender, violet, hazelnut, coffee, sandalwood, amyris, tolu balsam, Peru balsam, styrax, birch tar

I love both hazelnut and coffee fragrances. I like the description of the nutty aroma of hazelnut and the delicate bitterness of coffee. I live in Maryland USA.

  • How spiritual and emotional this fragrance is really appealed to me. I think people can I have deep connections with certain scents. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Seems super calming! “Notes: pimento berry, lavender, violet, hazelnut, coffee, sandalwood, amyris, tolu balsam, Peru balsam, styrax, birch tar” wow that pyramid is lovely. I’m from eu

  • Art is ALWAYS and interpretation. No matter how sure we are of our direction someone comes in and experiences lavender instead of sueded beige. In maryland.

  • I know for sure I’ll love the base, but the “soft-pedaled lavender” sounds perfect—that note is tough for me when it’s sharp but rendered in “pale wisteria” it sounds perfect! I’m reading in the US.

  • Great job here by master Ida.
This is the first time I read something about Fragments by NVC, but it look just amazing.
Thyina seems like something out of this world. The heavenly lavender, the sandalwood and the concept behind this fragrance makes me wanna try asap. I hope I get my nose on it soon.

  • Fragments by NVC Thyina seems like it presents a fougere twist to a gourmand composition. The fragrance also has an oriental feel, due to notes like tolu. I am in US

I love everything from NVC, and this sounds very intriguing indeed. I usually love coffee, nutty fragrances when done elegantly, so am super curious about this. I would love to enter the draw. I live in California.

  • While velvety, suede-like beige hues and pale wisteria tones were mentioned by Ida in the review, I had a sudden chestnut tones before my eyes (both the shiny brown of the fruit, and the dusty grey beige of that spot where it was attached to the pod). That’s how I picture Thyina – polished, warm, no discordant ripples, all autumnal harmony.
Thanks for the review and the draw, from EU.

  • I’m appealed by the distinct soft-pedaled lavender commingled with a poetic violet that creates a powdery effect, Thyina’s base that is profoundly resinous and the feeling of a featherweight pashmina enveloping the wearer in a comfort which verges on the spiritual.

This perfume sounds like an absolute dream. I mean, that combo of hazelnut and coffee notes? I’m all in for nutty and bitter vibes coming together, it gives me a feeling of a snug coffee shop. Just imagine how it would warm you up on those cool autumn days when the leaves are starting to change colors! Thankful for the Ida’s review. EU

  • I have never encountered Neela Vermeire Créations before, so always exciting to hear about another niche house and the creative people behind the brand! Also, kudos to Neela Vermeire for the awards and recognition garnered this past year. Creations Fragments Thyina, as described by Ida, sounds like a very interesting blend with the amyris, coffee and hazelnut blend – thoroughly enjoyed the imagery of the comforting and almost spiritual pashmina. I would love to be wrapped in that, so super interested in this giveaway for the chance to smell something by NVM. Thank you, from Canada!

  • I adore that quote; it’s coming at the right time. Fragments sounds like a perfect yoga perfume that you wear though lunch, dinner and beyond. Ida’s ( IDA) review connects this perfume to a place of serenity that we all want to access. Fragments sounds like a perfume you wear for you and if others like it too, all the better. I live in a constant state of flux in NY.

  • The cashmere shawl feel of this sounds amazing and I’m always on the look out for another cozy scent that is also elegant, which this sounds to be. I live in the USA.

  • Fragments by NVC Thyina has definitely caught my attention. From “pale wisteria tones” to a muted birch tar, it has me intrigued. I definitely will also check out Purpureum and Nemus. I’m a fan of Neela Vermiere. Thanks for another wonderful article and draw. Mich USA

  • Nice review Ida! Very interesting the approach of Ms. Vermeire to relate this collection to the produce of our fragrant imagination and I can understand the fact of not discovering the perfumers to avoid preconceived biases. Because we have it: An Ellena, Ropion, Duchaufour,…scent has a connection in our mind before trying it. Curiously the beige Neela envision turns to a Pale Wisteria in Ida (perhaps the lavender, violet notes) . This herb/floral opening and the soft bitter nuttiness of hazelnut/coffee are unusual . Then the woods of birch tar and sandalwood (Ligna thyina) to end with amazing resins (tolu/Peru blasam, styrax) to envelope our body and soul. A Serene scent! I live in Spain, EU

  • Taking into consideration all the good things that I read about Neela Vermeire during the years , i believe she’s one of a kind person. LOVE Bombay Bling, and original Mohur, and I’m pumped for Fragments by NVC line .
Thyina is smooth, balsamic fragrance with added hazelnut, coffee with slightly spicy and vanillic nuances , sounds fantastic.
Like Ida , I like my pashmina scarfs around my neck in the Fall and Winter , Thyina would be a great fit for me.
    Thanks for the draw

Dearest Ida, a beautiful piece on a perfume and a perfumer close to my heart. Thynia was the standout for me from the Fragments Collection from dear Neela. So unusual it stopped me in my tracks, such a creative combining of notes to produce something of note. I would be hounoured to own a bottle . Thank you
    I live in SW France

  • Never tried anything from Neela Vermeire, but the combination of hazelnut, coffee and sandalwood does sound very interesting and I am sure that they complement one another very well.
Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • I love coffee perfumes and Thyina seems unique with the lavender, violet, and hazelnut notes to complement the coffee. I would love the chance to try it! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I love Neela Vermiere! I have samples of Trayee and Bombay Bling and absolutely love them. Thyina sounds like a very calming, grounding fragrance. The notes seem to be geared towards a more spiritual experience with lavender, sandalwood and resins. I’m in the US.

  • sillage4ever says:

Only Neela Vermeire could pull off such a bold offering, really excited for this nutty one and just in time for autumn.

I’m in the USA, thanks for the doing your perfuming thing.

  • Thyina is a really interesting take on sandalwood. The birch tar in the base caught my attention; that’s a powerful and distinct smell, but I suspect it’s wonderful if used with a delicate touch and combined with aromatic woods and nutty notes. (I suspect it’s an unexpected foil to coffee and hazelnut.) The juxtaposition of soft lavender in the opening and a bold resinous base is also intriguing, and that base sounds like the highlight here. I’d love to wear this on a crisp Autumn day.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the detailed review, Ida.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about NVC Creations Fragments Thyina based on Ida’s review is so many things. First, the fresh touch of Lavender with the roasted nutty hazelnut and coffee that sounds truly divine with warm resinous tolu balsam, peru balsam, and styrax. I love how rich and resinous the base is without the smoky, leathery, and animalic undertones that often come with styrax and birch tar. This sounds truly beautiful. I am from the USA.

  • That seems like a perfect blend of finely selected raw materials.
Will surely read up on this brand, would love to try this perfume

Neela Vermeire equals top quality ingredients fragrances , usually created by one of the best perfumers out there Bertrand Duchaufour , and now she invited Fabrice Olivieri and Cristiano Canali . Also the design , anesthetics , positive vibe all combined is certain recipe for success. I still need to try Fragments by NVC collection , the “figment of our imagination”
Friends and relatives , jazz music, coffee, hazelnut, sandalwood and tolu balsam , contentment all are part of the festive sensation coming from Thyina
I’m happy to own one of Neela Vermeire fragrance called Trayee . I sampled it because of Ermano Picco Cafleurebon review, and decided to buy a bottle.Such a sophisticated fragrance with cardamom , fizzy ginger , incense from the base and blackcurrant notes. It’s sweeter than I expected. To me definitely special occasions fragrance.
    Another overly exciting giveaway, USA

Ida Meister + Neela Vermeire fragrances = Win.
Being a Pastry Chef i’ll never forget how Ida once compared Mohur Extrait with Gulab Jamun , shout out to you Ida ❤
Lavender, coffee is how Thyina starts , then the sweetness from the resins, and the sandalwood turn the fragrance into a comfortable slightly sweet and woody aroma. I have a sample , and I don’t think I can smell leather and smoke.
One VERY IMPORTANT note to all who impressed with Ida Meister take on Thyina do consider discovering Neela Vermeire fragrances , you should know

  • Regis Monkton says:

For a while now, I’ve been wanting to try something from Neela Vermiere, but I haven’t had a chance to yet. I’d like to try Fragments by NVC Thyina for multiple reasons, e.g.: I like to hear about the lavender/violet powdery effect, its wisteria tones, the use of hazelnut and coffee, and its resinous base. I live in the U.S.A. I want to try this one very much.

  • Neela Vermeire i relate to what the great Walt Disney once said “If you can dream it, you can do it” , and she did it while having full financial, and creative control of the brand .
With her experience i so wonder what kind of fragrance Ida thinks possesses “remarkably reassuring and zenlike nature” , and I’d like to know will Thyina be as good as Trayee , my favorite from Neela Vermeire. I really like the balsamic and woody drydown, with leather and vanilla.
I would tuck my scarf under the collar of my suit , spray some Trayee and be found of the experience.
Thank you Ida , Neela Vermeire

  • Coffee and hazelnut are very appealing to me. They always make me feel cozy. The pimento seems like it could add a subtle warm spiciness. I love cooking with pimento seeds and they sort of smell like a few different spices. Cloves and cinnamon come to mind. Lavender is also one of my favorite notes, I love lavender lattes when I get to have one.
    I live in Illinois, USA.

  • When I was starting my journey , working shifts , and training with the vision of becoming Master Barber, at the barbershop i was working back then , there was a framed quote on the wall “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart” . Neela Vermeire may very well have the same quote hanging somewhere in her office
Congratulations on your Fragments by NVC collection , stay on the right track, and please stay independent.
Sandalwood has been used for centuries because the the relaxing properties, it can reduce anxiety, and it’s a mild sedative. No wonder Ida Meister thinks Thyina possesses zenlike nature.
Other than the sandalwood ,i welcome the nutty ,resinous and balsamic qualities of Thyina , I always acknowledge such spiritual fragrances.
Bombay Bling is my favorite Neela Vermeire perfume, it smells fresh mango fruity, and woody, in a good, natural way.
Thanks to all involved , Neela Vermeire, Ida Meister and Cafleurebon

  • I had the pleasure of not only smelling Neela Vermeire Créations fragrances at Esxence 2018 , but Neela herself. Such a warm and genuine woman.
Esxence is surreal experience for every fragrance lover, it is overwhelming, you just can’t smell everything , it’s not possible.
If I have to rate my favorite Neela Vermeire Créations fragrances:
    1. Mohur Extrait , also Michelyn favorite i believe
    2. Bombay Bling ,
    3. Trayee / Purpureum from the new Fragments by NVC line
Trayee like Ida said is quite complex, it changes so much from the opening, to the heart and the drydown. Sweet, herbal, smoky ,nutty, resinous and sweet leather nuances intermingle in a magician way.
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing Neela Vermeire Créations before, so it’s always exhilarating to discover another niche perfume house and the creative minds behind it! I must also commend Neela Vermeire for the well-deserved awards and recognition they’ve received in the past year. When Ida described Creations Fragments Thyina, it sounded like an exquisite blend, especially with the notes of tolu balsam, Peru balsam, styrax, and birch tar. The imagery of the comforting and almost spiritual pashmina was truly captivating, and I can only imagine how wonderful it must smell. I’m deeply intrigued by this fragrance and would absolutely love the opportunity to experience it through this giveaway. My appreciation from the USA!

The hazelnut and coffee notes are calling my name :). The notes in this creation by Neela sound wonderful.

  • Thanks for the wonderful review Ida.

I’ve read a lot about Neela Vermiere’s fabulous creations (Trayee and Bombay Bling).

This one is a little bit of an outlier in her world, with the use of both coffee and hazelnut. The use of amyris, styrax and birch in the base really ties down the scent, along with the tolu balsam.

This scent seems to be one to create a meditative envelope around the wearer.

Would love to see more of Fabrice Olivieri’s work.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Styrax & birch tar But also those unkown balsams ‍ I love the good storytelling but the ingriedents in here are interesting enough by themselves! P. S. I create in Poland
