10 Best Winter Fragrances 2023+ Part 2 Cold Weather Giveaways

Best Winter Fragrances 2023

10 Best Winter Fragrances 2023 @redolesssence

At the time of this posting, we are in the middle of winter, although you would never know it from the higher-than-normal temps in NYC. As in Part 1, we recommend winter fragrances that are deeper and richer often with notes of oud, coffee, tobacco and resins. Here are the final five of the co-curated 10 Best Winter Fragrances 2023 that Video Content Creator Steven Gavrielatos aka Redolessence and I put together for the season in no particular order. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special (Chris Maurice) is a 2021 collaboration with  founder Sergio Momo’s friend British-Italian guitarist Tony Iommi, who co-founded the English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, and was the band’s guitarist, leader and only continuous member for nearly five decades. Iommi was ranked number 25 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. Notes include: Bergamot, rum, geranium, passion fruit, cinnamon, patchoulileather, sandalwoodvanilla, caramel, labdanum, musk-Steven Gavrielatos and Michelyn Camen

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense (Patricia de Nicolai): One of the most interesting and inspiring perfumers I have interviewed as Editor-in-Chief of ÇaFleureBon is Patricia de Nicolai, who I always refer to as “The First Lady (Boss) of Niche”. For those not familiar with her lineage, Madame is a grand-daughter of Guerlain’s founder, Pierre Guerlain, and a niece of Jean-Jacques Guerlain. Here is what she had to say about one of my personal 10 best winter fragrances: ‘Although I hate smoking, I have always loved the scent of tobacco leaves used in the making of cigars.’ explains Mme de Nicolaï. ‘When I was a child, at my parent’s, I appreciated when I was asked to go and collect the cigar box’. What a pleasure to open it and to smell these scents…It was a fragrance that really transported me! Many years after, I have found this scent in my lab thanks to the tobacco leave absolute, starting point of Cuir Cuba Intense’.

There are plenty of fragrances that can evoke refined leather and a slightly cigar-like aroma. This is NOT one of them. As Steven says in his video it’s INTENSE. Composed of 90.9 % all natural ingredients. Notes: Aniseed, Liquorice, Sicilian lemon, Spearmint, Sage, Lavender, PelargoniumYlang-ylang, Magnolia, Coriander, Tobacco, Hay, PatchouliCedarMusk, Civet. -Michelyn Camen

For The Scent of It Oud Café (Michael Schrammel) 2022: If you are a regular reader of CaFleureBon, then you know how talented we believe Michael Schrammel is; he’s a new-on-the scene artisan perfumer from Wisconsin (I awarded his brand For The Scent of It Best Discovery of 2022). Oud Café is unique and doesn’t smell like any coffee or oud perfume I have ever tested. This isn’t the scent of bitter black coffee grounds, think of a café latte, creamy with a toasted nuttiness brought in by the black walnut.  Got oud? Chances are in most fragrances you don’t. Michael uses real oudh which is not animalic and is blended with vanilla and tonka, giving it a sophisticated vibe. It’s one smooth operator. Top: Espresso, White Pepper, Black Walnut, Bergamot. Heart: Oud, Coffee CO2, IrisBulgarian Rose, Oak. Base: SandalwoodLabdanum ResinoidVetiverTonka BeanMusk -Michelyn Camen

Amouage Material (Cecile Zarokian) 2021: As I wrote in my top ten perfumes of 2021, Cecile Zarokian has created the vanilla of the decade. Dark and resinous, I want to bathe in all its benzoin glory as swirls of frankincense twirl and entangle me in a web of fine honeyed smoke. Notes: Elemi, Patchouli, Madagascar Vanilla, Absolute, Benzoin, GuaiacwoodOud, OsmanthusFrankincense Resinoid, Labdanum, Tonka Bean.-Michelyn Camen

Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif (Hamid Merati Kashani) is a more intense version of the cult favorite Layton. Here’s where the notes and thus the composition differs: at the top is almond, mandarin orange, and bergamot and the base includes oud, vanilla, coffee, and sandalwood.  The brand markets it to men, but for me it is gender-fluid. I also smell something more animalic in Exclusif. This is a great winter fragrance and transitional scent… into spring for the evening, or more formal occasions. – Michelyn Camen

All of Steven’s and Michelyn’s 10 Best Winter Fragrances 2023 Part 2 have exceptional longevity and sillage.

  • Cuir Cuba Intense sounds awesome to me, i really love tobacco fragrances! Greatings from Romania <3!

  • Cecile set a high bar for a vanilla fragrance with Nishane Ani and from Michelyn’s review, it seems Amouage Material is another great vanilla composition from her. Steven says Cuir Cuba Intense is one of his favorites from the brands and has woody elements along with tobacco and leather. My choices are:

    Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense

    I am in US.

  • My choice I’d like to win is a 100 ml bottle of Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense. I thought that Michelyn’s review was very helpful and detailed. I loved all of the facts. I also thought that Steven’s review was really professional and it was great to watch. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I followed on Instagram, my Instagram name: insztagramekphoto

  • Oud Cafe Sounds so yummy! Im also curious about PDM’s “masc” vanilla, sounds delicious. Amouge and Xerjoff choices: I agree. My choice for the giveaway is Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense, I am moved with her story and ancestors. Also we share put feelins about tobacco. Im from eu

  • Haven’t smelled Monkey Special, but I do have to credit some of my musical experience to Tony’s work with Black Sabbath. 🙂 I’m kind of like Patricia too in that I hate smoking, but love the scent of tobacco leaves. The way Steven describes Cuir Cuba Intense in the video as both dark and professional is intriguing. Those two are usually mutually exclusive in the mainstream. But a top 3 from the brand is high praise! Sounds like I’d enjoy it. Ditto with Oud Cafe. Great description. Although I’m usually one to favour the scent of fresh bitter coffee (who isn’t), a creamy latte sounds far more mass appealing and comforting. And if Michelyn hasn’t smelled anything like it, the uniqueness has got to be up there! Layton Exclusif still my #2 from PdM and yet to be dethroned by any of their more recent releases. It’s funny, I wasn’t originally a fan when it first came out (especially of the opening), but the drydown was a bit of a milestone for me when beginning my journey into niche perfumery. Whereas Layton hit the spot with a sparkling apple and caramel, Exclusif immediately started with something grungy, bitter and almost green. The drydown maintained the character of the original, but it’s a different fragrance altogether imo. Sidenote: I didn’t think most people would appreciate it, but my sister really digs it. And frankly so do I. Layton Exclusif would be my pick to win. Following on IG. @donilight. From Canada! (Which…is also experiencing a warmer-than-usual winter. Not complaining since there’s less snow to shovel and brighter fragrances to enjoy!). Hope y’all are having a brilliant new year!

  • Loved both reviews and see a lot of familiar names, especially for the scent of it and am surprised to see that they use real oud. The fact the Steven compared their oud cafe to a Tom Ford Oud Wood with coffee really shows For The Scent of It’s quality. I’ve never heard of an almond note but blend of scents in parfums de marly Layton exclusif sounds incredible. If I were to win I would love to have a bottle of Layton or For the scent of it, but all of these fragrances sound amazing in the winter cold. From TX, USA.

  • ramsesperez52 says:

Cuir Cuba Intense would be my pick of choice. For one, I’m Cuban lol. 2, I love an intense fragrance like both Steven and Michelyn said. Third, I love tabaco fragrances, I think I have about 3 or 4 currently in my collection. I’d love to have Cuir Cuba Intense! Cheers from the US.

  • I adore tobacco fragrances in winter. They are such a hit – most people love the smell of tobacco but hate cigarette smell, so are shocked to learn that I’m wearing something that smells of tobacco when they compliment me!
Thanks for the overview Michelyn and including Madame Nicolai’s thoughts on tobacco which reflect my experience!
Thanks to Steven for the review and I agree with Steven about Cuir Cuba – it is absolutely intense!
I would like to win Layton Exclusif!
    I am following on Instagram.

  • Johnmichael02302 says:

These are incredible choices! Steven has a gift of describing a fragrance & making it so tempting to blind buy! I would be honored to win Cuir Cuba! Good luck from Boston. Ma!

  • All of them sounds really good!! Love winter fragrances, in Seattle it’s all we need. I am from US
    Thank you

  • Ooh such great choices! Oud Cafe is Smoooth! I was stunned by how smoothly it was blended and easily all year round wearable in my humble opinion. Agreed on a great new house.
Nicolai is one of my secret favorites, her Tonka Vanille, Rose Pivoine, Fig Tea etc etc.. it’s always been a success in my book. But I don’t have the Cuir Cuba Intense, therefore it’s my pick if I’m so lucky! Thank you for the chance. In USA.

  • I actually had no idea that Layton Exclusif has the addition of coffee in the base notes as per Michelyn’s review. I 100% agree with the animalic notes being included though.

Steven is great as always, and I absolutely agree that Layton Exclusif lasts forever lol from the couple of times I’ve tried it on, it lasted the whole day! He has such a way of describing fragrances that really makes me want to try each and every one of the ones he talks about.

I have a few PdM fragrances, but for some reason never ended up getting Layton Exclusif, so I would love to add that to my collection!

    I’m located in the US!

  • I loved that Michelyn included how layton exclusif and layton differed. Also how bith Steven and Michelyn really loved Nicolai Cuir Cuba intense
    Thanks for the chance
    USA

  • Both Michelyn and Steven have such high praise for Amouage Material, which I have been eyeing coz of the gorgeous red bottle. The “vanilla of the decade” seems right up my alley. Might be one I will save up for.

I would love to try out For the Scent of It Oudh Cafe. I’ve got an inclination towards coffee and oudh perfumes, and this one sounds marvelous. Greetings from Hawaii, USA!

  • hippononamus says:

I enjoyed both of your comments on Cuir Cuba, but grownup isn’t one of them. Contrary to Steven’s comment I haven’t tried the original Layton or Exclusif, but have obviously read the hype. As it’s a darker, cold weather formulation my choice would be for the Layton Exclusif. Also just want to note you’re missing an “i” in your instagram handle in the post. I’m in the US.

  • Layton and Layton Exclusif are two of the scents that started me down this fragrant endeavor.
I have smelled the Iommi and found it really fine scents.
I love the Parfums de Nicolai that I have smelled and it would be my first choice.
    Oklahoma USA

  • Steven is my favorite content creator! He always brings new things to the table that are not “known”. It’s so nice to be informed about new scents like Oud Cafe. I’ve never heard of that before but it sounds amazing and something I would like to smell, even tho I’m not to hip on oud. Layton is also very nice. I smelled it on a strip and wasn’t too blown by it like everyone else. Maybe if I sprayed it on skin my opinion MAY change. But definitely interested in oud cafe just sounds amazing and yummy with Layton as my second choice. I always appreciate the opportunity to be involved with these. My collection is growing for sure! This would be amazing. Much love from PA USA

  • Steven and Michelyn just killed it!!!! I have a tiny sample of Layton and Material and they are just divine!!!! I would love to get my hands on a full bottle of Layton Exclusif !!!! I’m a woman and I agree it’s unisex… it’s simply delicious! Cuir Cuba Intense sounds unique and interesting!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, MA. Following Cafleurebon on Instagram as Hshinkoda. Fingers crossed!!!!

  • Wow!!!!!!
Both of you do such a great job describing each scent.
I’ve always wanted pdm’s Layton Exclusif but you specifically have opened me up to really wanting the cuir cuba intense.

  • Two heads are better than one , if they are helping each other, and I’m always looking for double reviews.
-Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special (Chris Maurice)
The new hype train is legit, I sampled the fragrance, and I’m impressed. Tony Iommi Monkey Special is not only is inspired by one of the greatest guitar players ever, but also think it represents the passion, lust , and of lavish lifestyle on Tommy Iommi as a person.
Ideally balanced , multifaceted sweet, warm spicy fragrance with leather.
-Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense (Patricia de Nicolai):
I had the pleasure of visiting one of Nikolai Parfemeur Createur boutiques in Paris back in 2018 , and the one that impressed me the most was exactly….Cuir Cuba Intense . End up buying 100ml bottle for €171. Out of curiosity I checked Nikolai Parfemeur Createur website, and current price is €204 , such a pleasant surprise considering all the massive price hikes last few months. When I finish my bottle, I’ll be buying another one.
Simply awesome tobacco and licorice fragrance i wear with a suit only. I think there’s way more liquorice in Cuir Cuba, than leather, i own the fragrance after all.
-For The Scent of It Oud Café (Michael Schrammel)
I wonder how good the fragrance is ,to genuinely impress Michelyn?!?
    -Amouage Material (Cecile Zarokian)
I like Amouage, i like resinous vanilic fragrance , and also guaiac wood, frankincense and patchouli , and some vanilla , I need to try Material
-Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif (Hamid Merati Kashani)
When I think Parfums de Marly , I always think Pegasus , i wear the fragranse rigt now
Being in tailoring business, I would wear Layton Exclusif while working with clients at the shop , and also going out clubbing.
Classy , dress to impress bespoke suit type of fragrance , I like the original, the way Michelyn described the base of the fragrance, and the slightly animalic accord is tickling my fancy even more
Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif is special , and I believe I’d feel in good spirits while wearing it , the fragrance i’d like to win
Thank you Michelyn, Steven and all the brands
    USA

  • Interesting story about the creation of Cuir Cuba from Patricia. I can’t imagine how it is to live in a family that has such dedication to crafting perfumes.
    I’m in the EU.

  • From this list and what I know, I do agree with Amouage Material being a perfect cold weather fragrance. Very cozy and intimate.
I am in EU and I would love to win the perfume from Parfums de Nicolai. Thank you!

  • asked to go and collect the cigar box’. What a pleasure to open it and to smell these scents…It was a fragrance that really transported me! Many years after, I have found this scent in my lab thanks to the tobacco leave absolute, starting point of Cuir Cuba Intense’.

A beautiful description of Michelyn and Steven intrigued by the natural ingredients used in this composition. If I am lucky love to win Cuir Cuba Intense Parfums de Nicolai. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • ingredients. Notes: Aniseed, Liquorice, Sicilian lemon, Spearmint, Sage, Lavender, Pelargonium, Ylang-ylang, Magnolia, Coriander, Tobacco, Hay, Patchouli, Cedar, Musk, Civet. -Michelyn Camen. A brilliant review by Michelyn and Steven really fascinated by the notes in Cuir Cuba Intense and the natural ingredients used just adds to the mystery and exoticism of this fragrance. If I am successful like to win Cuir Cuba Intense. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I like how michelyn talks about when yo wear perfumes and I like how Steven describes the performance. Very helpful and practical. I’d love to win Layton. I live in Indiana.

  • It’s amazing how scents can transport you back to a certain memory, as Cuir Cuba Intense did for Madame Patricia. Steven describes it as dark and mysterious which is intriguing. Based in the UK.

  • Always hard to say what I think of the reviews when I haven’t smelled the fragrances mentioned. But after reading them I’m drawn to Layton which would be my pick for the draw. US

  • Jacob D Savitt says:

The Cuir Cuba sounds so beautiful! Heavy hitter according to Steven, so I’d love that, and Michelyn says it’s intense tobacco which is so appealing! Great review! Would love a Layton Exclusif

    From NJ

  • Great choises by Michelyn and Steven.
I love winter, because I can use my most potent fragrances and be cool with it. I love the selection. I have tried Xerjoff Tony Iommi and Layton Exclusif and they totally rock on winter. I will be getting them more frecuent this time of year.
I would love to win Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense or Layton Exclusif, but anything would be great to win.
    USA here.

  • Tobacco, Incense and Oud notes are my favorite notes during the cold months. Material sounds great, with the mention of incense. I do agree that Parfums de Marly fragrances are unisex, as I own a few myself. If lucky, I’d choose Cuir Cuba Intense, Layton Exclusif or Oud Café. Mich USA

  • I really appreciate Michelyn’s comments about Oud Cafe having a creaminess to it more akin to a latte than the coffee ground scent we often get in coffe-based fragrances. As a person who isn’t the biggest fan of coffee fragrances because the coffee and its bitterness are often too forward, this is relieving and makes me more likely to try this one out.

I really liked Steven’s comments about Parfums De Marly Layton Exclusif. I agree that it is a magnificent flanker to the orginal and is perfect for the colder months.

If I were to win, I would pick PDM Layton as my prize. Reading from North Carolina, USA.

  • I like that For the Scent of It is included. I bought his sample pack after reading a review of Folk Tale. Oud cafe is really excellent and Michelyn describes it perfectly. USA and Oud Cafe or Layton Exclusif please

  • Zoran Loncarevic says:

Once again a great review. Thanks for that Steven. In that case, my favorites would be… all . Greetings from Germany.

  • Enjoyed Michelyn and Steven reviews!
Love Michelyn description of Material – love vanilla perfumes.
I am familiar with Layton, but Steven review make me try test Layton Exclusif.
I would like to win Layton Exclusif.
    USA

  • Michelyn and Steven did such a great job presenting these frags and really triggering one’s interesting to smell them. I personally know for sure I will try to hunt them down and sample them for the colder weather. Also loved how the selection did not follow a pattern: it contained resins and ambers just like it did oud and rose or leather or sweet earthy scents. There’s something for everyone!
I would love to get Nicolai Cuir Cuba Intense if I win. I love the house and this fragrance sounds fantastic, dark leather with fantastic projection and longevity but also an elegance and professionalism to it.
    From the EU. Thanks!

  • Oud, coffee, tobacco and resins are perfect cold weather notes. Too bad we on the East Coast of the US haven’t had much of a winter yet! All of Michelyn’s and Steve’s picks evoke the strong and earthy scents that work so well when there’s a chill in the air. I would love a bottle of PdM Layton Exclusif. The almond and citrus opening along with the coffee base is decadence in a bottle. MD, USA.

  • As a big fan of warm fragrances, especially oud and warm spices, I think that Oud Cafe sounds the most enticing. As for Steven’s reviews, I think this fragrance sounds warm and inviting, like a warm cup of coffee on a cold winter day. I love the description of it being different, and standing out.

  • Cuir Cuba Intense has been on my radar for ages. I have a small shop in my area that carries Nicolai perfumes, but never paid attention to Cuir Cuba. Your article reminded me that I have to get my nose on that one as soon as possible.
I am based in Europe. Thank you and good luck to everyone!

  • I don’t know about NYC, but it’s really windy out here …
Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special made by Chris Maurice
I bought a small decant after reading the first Steven and Michelyn review , it’s truly great fragrance with gourmand elements , rum , patchouli , and sensuality coming from the leather . I should’ve bought full bottle.

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense made by Patricia de Nicolai
I’ve sampled 4 Nikolai Parfemeur Createur fragrances , Vanille Tonka , Neroli Intense ,New York Intense , and Angelys Pear.
New York Intense i had to buy, it’s timeless.
Even though there’s way more incense than vanilla and tonka , I also really like Vanille Tonka
I love tobacco fragrances , especially sophisticated ones like Cuir Cuba

For The Scent of It Oud Café made by Michael Schrammel
“café latte, creamy with a toasted nuttiness brought in by the black walnut”
I’m interested in such café latte fragrances

Amouage Material made by Cecile Zarokian
All Amouage fragrances are well made , you can pick up the quality right away. Grown-up balsamic vanilla with oud, and honeyed feel , my kind of fragrance.

Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif made by Hamid Merati Kashani
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly, it’s full , balsamic sweet , one of my favorites . Early last Spring I bought another 125ml bottle from Luckyscent , it’s quite clear how much I love it.
Layton I’ve smelled a few times, but not the Exclusif. I like the addition of coffee and a bit of playfulness.

I’ll be happy to win Layton Exclusif
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Looking forward to my shot at for the scent of it and cuba intense! The way Steven describes it, sounds super delicious

  • Steven has a gift, and knowledge to describe fragrances really well.

Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif it’s been in my radar for a while now, I hope I can be included in the giveaway.

    From Massachusetts, USA

  • Love these top 10s. I remember the Xerjoff being review here before but now this has put it back on my radar as the rum and passionfruit intrigue me. I am going to see If I can try the Layton today. I have tried Cuir Cuba and can say that it does have the longevity and heft. I am picky with licorice being sensitive but loved the composition otherwise. For me For The Scent of It Oud Cafe is really intriging though. Would love to win a FB. I live in the US

  • I love the description of Cuir Cuba Intense. Really intense winter fragrance made out of 90.9% natural ingredients. I would love to enter the giveaway.

    I am from Sweden.

  • Im really interested in
Mille Mercis for 100 ml bottle of Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense . Michelyn and Steven did a wonderful job describing these winter Fragrances. Thank you both USA

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Cuir Cuba Intense would be my pick of choice. For one, I’m Cuban lol. 2, I love an intense fragrance like both Steven and Michelyn said. Third, I love tabaco fragrances, I think I have about 3 or 4 currently in my collection. I’d love to have Cuir Cuba Intense! Cheers from the New York Usa

  • I was hoping for Best Winter Part 3 and 4…
☆ Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special (Chris Maurice)
Through Tony Iommi Monkey Special people worldwide could learn about the Italy , and its rich culture , historical sightseeings , but also and the importance of Tony Iommi , and Black Sabbath for the whole heavy metal scene.
Michelyn , Steven , and the notes of the fragrance reminded me of one decadent dessert, I make on private orders only, Passion Fruit Caramel Cake , drizzled with Rum. Eating the cake, while sitting on a leather couch is what I’m thinking right now.
☆ Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense (Patricia de Nicolai):
Like Patricia de Nicolai i hate smoking, but I always thought the smell of tobacco, and old cigar boxes is captivating.
☆ For The Scent of It Oud Café (Michael Schrammel) 2022:
Michelyn take on the fragrance made me think of the traditional Coffee and Walnut Cake
☆ Amouage Material (Cecile Zarokian) 2021:
Honey Vanilla Butter Cake is exactly how I feel Material would smell.
☆ Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif (Hamid Merati Kashani)
It’s a toss up for me between Herod and Oajan, for my favorite Parfums de Marly fragrances , I’m happy to own both.
It seems like Layton Exclusif is going into darker and more enchanting territory , compared to mostly Granny Smith, lavender and cardamom heavy Layton.
I’ll be happy to win Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif
Appreciate Michelyn and Steven reviews, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • All the perfumes described in Michelyn’s introductions and Steven’s video reviews sound lovely for this time of the year. It’s a bummer that Xerjoff and Amouage perfumes are not in the draw, but the rest are wonderful too. I like Michelyn’s introductions as she brings in her personal touches and connections to the perfumes. Especially liked Patricia’s quote in Michelyn’s introduction, the story of how she loved the smells of cigars, etc. Steven as usual did a great job of describing the perfumes. While I love oud, I am interested in Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif for the draw. The bottle is so elegant and the smell sounds so classy. I am a Redolessence subscriber and am in the continental United States. Thanks for the draws and reviews.

  • I would love to put in for Oud Cafe by For the Scent of It. I have been looking to get deeper into smaller indie houses and this sounds right up my alley, being someone who is a bit worried that they might have smelled everything there is worth smelling in this coffee / sweet / Oud category. I live in Pittsburgh Pa.

  • BoogieDaddy says:

Really appreaciated Michelyn’s bit about Cuir Cuba Intense – the story of the perfumer’s lineage and history was interesting. Also loved how she warned us to heed Steven’s warnign about it being a truly intense fragrance.

I appreciated Steven’s bit about Layton Exclusif as a darker, sexier, and more mysterious take of the Layton DNA. I have smelled Layton Exclusif before and it has been on my list of dream fragrances for a while. That said, if I were to win, I would go for Layton Exclusif. I live in the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Steven. I’m a huge fan of the house of Nicolai, in no small part because of the Guerlain collection.

I really like Michelyns writeup on Cuir Cuba Intense – it truly makes be think of Cuban Cigars and dapper outfits – a throwback to a time that is no longer around.

I also love that this scent is intense and not held back in anyway.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Terrific list! I love that you included For The Scent of It Oud Café; I picked up a sample earlier this year and I was surprised by how smooth and easy going this fragrance is. Both the oudh and coffee are present, but both are tempered by the creamy sandalwood and warm gourmand notes.

Michelyn’s blurb about Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense very informative, as I wasn’t familiar with Patricia de Nicolai, and I enjoyed her quote about cigar box scent memory. I’ll certainly be wearing lots of tobacco scents this winter.

I also enjoyed Steven’s video. He mentioned Amouage Material reminds him of the time of year he got it, and an incense he was burning around the house at the time, and it reminded me of a few samples I’ve tried that remind me of exactly when I first sniffed them. I love that element of enjoying perfume, especially in such a holiday-filled time of year. Thanks for the detailed thoughts Steven.

I’m in the USA. Should I win the giveaway, I’d choose the 100 ml bottle of Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense. I’m following @cafleurebonoffical on Instagram too. Thanks!

  • Great reviews, Steven and Michelyn both. How you described Cuir Cuba Intense certainly piqued my interest. Leather and tobacco leaf are often used in fragrances, but it seems as if it was used in a unique way in Cuir Cuba Intense. That is the fragrance that I would like to win, thanks.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Thanks for the reviews Michelyn and Steven!

Here in the UK we are also experiencing a warmer winter than usual. If it wasn’t for the stone cold gusts of wind, I could have been fooled to think it was Spring already!

Still, cooler weather demands strong and great performance in my fragrance choices when I venture out into the great outdoors.

Thanks for reminding me about For The Scent Of It Oud Café. It piqued my interested when you nominated this for Best Discovery of 2022. I’ll have to get a sample from the US and give this some wear.

Whenever a video from Steven pops up in my notifications, I’m immediately put my work on hold and check out what amazing gems he has found for me. Our taste mostly aligns so I am quite confident in trying these and knowing I will enjoy them.
Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special is a sample I have ordered and hope to try out next week.

I would love to win Cuir Cuba Intense!

    I follow CaFleureBon on instagram.
    Greetings from the UK!

Awesome reviews as always,i loved the mention of the Nicolai brand and i even though i dont like smoking,i enjoy the aroma of tobacco. Cuir Cuba Intense would be an amazing wearing experience for me, i live in Greece,EU.

  • I would love to be entered for draw of Createur Cuir Cuba Intense. From USA. Tobacco sounds Devine in this!

  • You chose some great fragrances . As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances, and compare my thoughts with what Steven and Michelyn are getting, starting with the way Steven showed them in his video:

    Amouage Material by Cecile Zarokian
Cecile Zarokian implements vanilla and resins really well in her creations , Material is really good, still I’m on the fence if I like it more than Boundless

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense by Patricia de Nicolai
34th anniversary of Parfums de Nikolai is coming this year , as far as I can remember late September , such a milestone for independent brand.
My congrats are not only to “The first Lady (Boss) of Niche” Patricia deNicolai , but to all Parfums de Nikolai employees, and especially to Axel de Nikolai.
As a strict teetotaller I don’t smoke , but I too love tobacco fragrances , and Cuir Cuba Intense is just great. On my really dry skin unfortunately very few fragrances are truly “Intense” , as far as the aroma goes , to me Cuir Cuba Intense is sweet, cherry like tobacco fragrance , with herbal nuances, mint and liquorice.

Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif by Hamid Merati Kashani

“is a more intense version of the cult favorite Layton.”
Yes..and No . To me the similarities are only in the opening, but then Layton Exclusif is going into very different territory , compared to Layton.

“The brand markets it to men, but for me it is gender-fluid.”
People should wear what they like , period. With Layton Exclusif in my opinion it’s not about gender, but it very much depends on the the potential buyer experience with fragrances. Unexperienced noses most likely won’t be able to appreciate such fragrance, and I think rightfully Parfums de Marly are marketing Layton Exclusif as “for connoisseurs”.

“I also smell something more animalic in Exclusif.”
Because of the Civet in it. When Layton Exclusif first came out in 2017 , civet was part of the official notes announced by Parfums de Marly, but later on the the notes were changed, for the marketing reasons I believe.

    “mandarin orange”
Mandarin is actually one of the notes present at first, but later on removed by the brand . If you go to Parfums de Marly website now , you won’t find it anymore, it was replaced with grapefruit . Sandalwood, oakmoss, gardenia and oud were also present at first in the olfactive notes , and lavender was added later on, and was not present at first , and yes , I’m a fragrance nurd, and yes my memory is quite strong.

For The Scent of It Oud Café by Michael Schrammel
Fragrance I’ll have to sample. Modern take on coffee, vanilla and tonka

Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special by Chris Maurice
Not just Chris Maurice, or if you prefer Carbonell , is a genius, but so do Sergio Momo.
Undeniably he loves guitar players, and rock , and metal music. In 2021 there was another Xerjoff collaboration called Save Me, with Queen’s Brian May , another legendary guitarist.
Tony Iommi Monkey Special is a fantastic release, but it’s a changeling, and I believe sampling first is a must!
On my skin it’s mostly earthy patchouli, a bit ruff and tumble leather, peppery rose and rum. Of course I get the caramel, and the other sweet notes Steven mentioned, still on me the sweeter notes are supportive, and not main players on the field.
The thing that really surprised me, is that not only Steven never mentioned it , but Michelyn too … where is the rose ?
I can’t believe it, judging by how strong the peppery rose is on my skin.

I’d like to win Layton Exclusif by Initio Parfums Prives
Both profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I always gravitate towards Stephen’s breakdowns more than others, and he was his usual informative detail oriented self for these reviews. But this time, Michelyn’s grabbed my attention more. Highlights:
*Tony Iommi being on the top 100 guitarists of all time list
    * Me agreeing with Patricia de Nicolai in hating smoking but loving the aroma of tobacco
    * The description of the type of coffee you get from Oud Cafe

Should I win, I’d choose Layton Exclusif.
I live in North East United States

  • I have similar thoughts to Patricia de Nicolai regarding tobacco – I don’t smoke (and don’t like the taste) but when it comes to the smell it is totally different story. Especially in winter time it gives a vibe of cosiness.
I would love to win a bottle of Cuir Cuba Intense.
    I live in Poland.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I hope to win a bottle of Layton Exclusif. Michelyn’s description of Layton Exclusif caused me to be very enticed to have a bottle of it, and Steven’s review of it was a reminder that it has good performance. I follow Cafleurebon on Instagram (@regismonkton). I live in the U.S.A.

  • I have a feeling the Winter is just getting started, or at least I hope so , I’d like to wear my deep , and powerful fragrances for a lot longer.
-Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special is a fragrance with a character, that has a lot of layers, patchouli caramel, rum and leather undertones .
Of course I’ve heard Black Sabbath, and Tony Iommi, but since I don’t know much of heavy metal music , I like the way Michelyn filled us in . I now know not only about the fragrance, but how big of a name Tony Iommi actually is.
-Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense is mysterious and grown up tobacco, and leather fragrance
-For The Scent of It Oud Café is inviting and creamy Latte with non animalic oud.
    -Amouage Material (Cecile Zarokian) 2021:
    Vanilla of the decade?
    -Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif
Oajan is my favorite Parfums de Marly , but Delina Exclusif is breathing in Oajan neck all the time. Both are staples for me. Layton is popular for a reason, and I like how the Exclusif is more wintery , complex , and I’m sensing some seductive aspects too.
I’ll be happy to win Layton Exclusif
    Thanks for the draw

Lovely article! I really liked learning in Michelyn’s review that Patricia de Nicolai was inspired by the scent of tobacco even though she hates smoking and the scent of smoke. I also dislike the smell of smoking tobacco, but the smell of fresh, wet tobacco leaves is a whole other world entirely! Woody, warm, tender and rich, Cuir Cuba Intense is a fragrance I absolutely love. I also really enjoyed Steven’s description of Amouage Material as calm, meditative and tranquil scent that particularly lends itself to incense and bakoor. We could all use a little calm and tranquility especially this time of year after the hectic holidays and it really makes me want to try Material.

I am following your new Instagram page @cafleurebonoffical, my Insta name is momo.liu.121 and I live in the US. If I were to win I would pick the PmD Layton Exclusif as my first choice, the Cuir Cuba Intense would be my second choice, and the Oud Cafe would be my third choice.

  • Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special (Chris Maurice)
I grew up in a family of old-school hip-hop lovers, I know Black Sabbath by name only, so Michelyn introduction was helpful to me, to sort of feel better the spirit of “Tony Iommi Monkey Special”.
When I think of it , I like everything about the fragrance, the passion fruit, the caramel , leather and especially the rum.

Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense (Patricia de Nicolai):
    Class on its own

For The Scent of It Oud Café (Michael Schrammel) 2022:
    Sounds delicious

    Amouage Material (Cecile Zarokian) 2021:
    Amber with tenacious performance

Parfums de Marly Layton Exclusif (Hamid Merati Kashani)
    Provocative, flirtatious fragrance
I’d love to win Layton Exclusif
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michelyn’s and Steven’s reviews for the 10 best winter winter fragrances part 2. I love warm and resinous fragrances in the winter which is why I really gravitate towards Amouage Material and beautiful resinous and incense creation from Cecile Zarokian and Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special perfumed by Chris Maurice. For the Scent of It Oud Cafe sounds very sweet and resinous with Oud and Coffee, but more of the cafe latte variety which sounds very appealing. I loved learning about Nicolai Parfumeur Createur Cuir Cuba Intense (Patricia de Nicolai being related to descendents of Guerlain. I’m really interested to try Cuir Cuba Intense, but I am concerned the Leather may be animalic side and I noticed this fragrance also has civet which is hit or miss for me. I follow @cafleurebonofficial on instagram my name is @michaelprincefragrance I am from the USA. If I win I would choose For the Scent of It Oud Cafe
