Eris Parfums in Karl’s Collection.

Smell is an anarchist among our more socially reputable and mediated senses… It is direct, instantaneous, and nonrational, and it provides data that can elicit in us the primal and the mysterious.” -Barbara Herman Author of Scent & Subversion, Creator and Owner of Eris Parfums.

Friday 28th October, the venue is Mortimer House in London’s Fitzrovia. The location for Eris Parfums Press event is an intimate setting based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs with an Art Deco design it seems an appropriate place to delve into Barbara Herman’s labour of love, a collection in which the scents seem to choose you, not the other way around. There was much to discover, particularly the daringly devised concoctions broken down into the raw materials used for each perfume. This was a revelation to experience them piece meal and then spritz the collective beauty of each fragrance shining out strange, complex and instinctive smells. Antoine Lie master perfumer and the creator of each perfume thus far in the Eris family has left a lasting impression of high quality and an understanding of bringing the visceral nuances of perfumery to the fore.

If one is to place Eris Parfums in a taxonomy of smells, then ‘anarchist’ is befitting. There is an underlying order in the chaos of these compositions, there are notes which on paper should not make great bed fellows, but here in the Eris universe they harmonise perversely in a suggestive fervour. Selecting three to discuss was always going to be a tough assignment. However, one I thoroughly enjoyed and threw myself into nose first.

Best Eris Parfums

Eris Parfums and Scent and Subversion by Karl©

Eris Parfums Ma Bête (2016) Animalic to the core a truly dressed down perfume where indoles, aldehydes and spices cavort and create a powerful concoction.  It is a scent of shock and awe. On initial sniff I had a ‘Wow’ moment … soap meets skank. The blend akin to half douched bodies straight out of the shower and back for a second instalment.  And that is just the aperitif. Ma Bête goes headlong into the morning after the night before where mingling of sweat and stickiness is apparent. It truly is a full-on beast of a fragrance its beauty being its unapologetic attitude brought about by spices plus the overdose of an animalic cocktail.

Notes: Aldehydes, Tunisian Neroli, Indian Nutmeg, Honduran Styrax, Indian Jasmine Sambac, Virginia Cedarwood, Indonesian Patchouli, Animalic Accord (Synthetic).

Eris Parfums Night flower (2016): A narcotic silky dream of a perfume which wraps you in its embrace of spice and suede with a smidge of tuberose. If Ma Bête is the beast, then Night flower is the beauty. I visualise the colour crimson when  wearing it. Textured with cardamom, cinnamon and tonka bean its musky base is quite breath-taking. It is an ode to sensuality and has a light touch of leather. Digging deeply into the base I do pick up on the slightest animalic aspect, which just further adds to its allure. Some fragrances elicit a wooziness and a sultry effect; Night flower is one such scent.

Notes: Italian Bergamot, Russian Birch Tar, Guatemalan Cardamom, Suede, Indian Tuberose, Laotian Cinnamon, Indonesian Patchouli, Venezuelan Tonka Bean, Musk (Synthetic).

ERIS PARFUMS Green Spell

Eris Green Spell courtesy of the brand

Eris Parfums Green Spell (2021) A vivid neon of emerald pierces through into one’s consciousness. Green Spell is dynamic and is an uplifting perfume stacked with fruity, vegetal and aromatic notes. Combined they bring across an energetic and light fragrance, which is a million miles away from the rest of the Eris collection. Ambroxan and musk add a cloudlike structure to Green Spell. The fusion of fig, galbanum and narcissus absolute is a blast of positivity.

Notes: Italian Mandarin, French Black Currant Bud absolute (Bourgeons Cassis), Iranian Galbanum (oil and resinoid), Egyptian Violet Leaf absolute, French Narcissus absolute, Tomato leaf accord, Fig leaf accord, Haitian Vetiver, Ambroxan, Musk (synthetic)

  • Ma Bete has been referenced in tandem with one of my favorite muscs, Musc Tonkin by Parfum d’Empire. Green Spell intrigues me most though, with the mention of fruity and vegetal facets – hoping to get a Corsica Furiosa/Mal-Amie vibe or perhaps a Cristalle? (Eau Verte)?

    California Based. Appreciate the opportunity.

  • Eris Parfums Green Spell sounds exactly like my cup of tea! Fruity, vegetal, and aromatic.. this sounds exactly like some of my favorite other perfumes. I just adore fig leaf and vetiver. Would love to give this a try. Thank you for the opportunity. From CT, USA.

  • Ma Bête sounds most intriguing to me. I don’t usually gravitate towards scents like this, but I feel like I just have to experience it.

  • Green Spell intrigues me the most because it sounds really mystical and mysterious. I think it’s for sure a fabulous fragrance. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Great descriptions, Karl!

It’s funny how some smell Ma Bête and are quite shocked while others breathe deeply and love what they smell.
Night Flower is downright sensual and Green Spell is happy-go-lucky with its sparkles and greenness.

  • Karl!!! Gorgeous Review!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I have samples & bottles from ERIS already, so no need to enter me in the draw (I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading your post!!!). Lauryn originally got me hooked on Eris, lol! The two of you will convince me to own every bottle! Seriously, Green Spell and Ma Bête are really wonderful; especially for people who enjoy a classic chypre, as these two are beautifully done postmortems, or explications, or decodings of that structure, imho. Definitely worth the experience! I’m a fan! ❤️❤️❤️

  • All 3 fragrances sound amazing, but I think Eris Parfums Night flower sounds the most intriguing. Cardamom, cinnamon and tonka….. yes please!!!

    Houston Texas

  • Night flower seems to be the scent I would gravitate to from the descriptions, but hope to win to try them all.
    Thanks for the giveaways.

  • Anarchy! I wonder how come I have never imagined anarchy in perfumery. The fragrances must always follow rules and be predictable somehow so it takes a lot of courage and mind openness to bring anarchy into the game.
Ma Bête is translated My Beast and what a great name for the scent that defines personal power. Ma Bête is, for me, a masterpiece. I would love the opportunity to try it.
    Hugs from Romania

  • Ooh Green Spell for now, I’m always a sucker for a fig fragrance and am curious to see how the fig leaf plays with the tomato leaf. The other two sound intriguing too. All so different from each other really. Thank you

I am intrigued by the notes and description. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I’m absolutely insane about tuberose so I think yall can guess which one interests me the most.. I knew as soon as I read Night Flower. I live in Missouri, USA

  • Ma Bête is intriguing to me. I like wearing scents like this at home more than out and about. New Jersey, USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Already familiar with and a huge fan of the line! I’ve smelled them all briefly, and lived with some longer as samples. I really love Night Flower (kind of a softly floral take on the Musc Ravageur/Shalimar type ambery scent). While i wouldn’t necessary wear Bell du Jour, I think the bilgewater meets sweet, narcotic, sunblock-floral of it is just interesting and lovely! Scorpio Rising is a true favorite with its incensy goodness. I really love pretty much all of those I’ve smelled! I’d love to win this sample set. Thanks for the generous draw. I’m in the US.

  • I’ve been intrigued by this brand for a long time, and this excellent article is just adding fuel to fire! Ma Bête is the one I’m most curious about, quickly followed by Night Flower, because the more sensual the better when it comes to perfume…
I live in London, UK and appreciate the chance to enter this giveaway.

  • Mothballcloset says:

As indolic as Ma Bête is described, as intoxicating as Night Flower undoubtedly is, Green spell would be my first choice. Violet leaf, tomato leaf, fig, and narcissus are all accords that I adore in their own right- how much lovelier would they be combined? And with a bright citric opening? Irresistible.

From the swampy gulf coast of Texas.

  • Green Spell sounds like my friend from the three. I’m not into animalic scents nor really a floral fan, but a scent with fig? Why yes, yes I am. In maryland.

  • I’ve heard so much about Ma Bete and how gorgeous the animalics are, I would love to try that on especially but all of them sound amazing! I’m in MN, USA.

  • The three perfumes described by Karl all seem quite different from each other. I was half expecting to see cumin note in Eris Parfums Ma Bête based on the description, but it does not. Eris Parfums Ma Bête as beast vs Eris Parfums Night flower as beauty gives a good idea of the two perfumes. The third one seems quite different with a green, positive vibe. Would love to try these anarchist perfumes. especially Ma Bete seems especially intriguing!! Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • Great review! All three fragrances sound amazing… I really enjoyed how Karl described Green Spell!!! I love all the notes specially fig!!!! I would love to try this house! Thank you for the opportunity!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, MA.

  • What a powerful opening quote for this article, by the perfumer! I couldn’t agree more. Smell is perhaps the most visceral of senses, the one that hits you right to the gut and makes you lay down your arms without a battle.
Although all three sound beautiful, Night Flower appeals to me the most. I just love tuberose, and when it’s paired with enriching, rounding notes such as cinnamon, cardamom and leather, it can only become even more voluptuous.
    I live in the EU.
    Thank you!

  • Green Spell sounds like it was made for me!
    Fig, galbanum, and narcissus!!Yum!

Thank you for the reviews and the drawing.
    I am in the USA.

  • I tried Scorpio Rising recently and I just loveeeed it! Now I have to try the whole range. Ma Better does not seem like something I would like but I am super intrigued by the Green Spell and especially by Night Flower. I like cardamom, cinnamon and tonic and I particularly like the touch of leather. Just reading the note I was not envisioning a composition that Karl described, so I was pleasantly surprised. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Oh I am excited for this giveaway! Eris has been on my radar for awhile and I’m dying to sample. While they all sound terrific, I am especially interested in trying Green Spell because the smell of tomato leaf is one of my favorite garden scents. Thanks for this opportunity!
    WV, USA

  • I have not heard about this house before so it would be nice to actually pair the reviews with the real thing. I like wild, animalic fragrances, so Ma Bete is right up my alley. Thank you! Europe

  • I’m a gardener with a sweet spot for fig so everything about Green Spell intrigues me. I’m in Oregon where the green season just returned from its summer slumber. Happy Autumn!

  • I have only tried Green Spell from Eris. It put a big smile on my face at first sniff. I would love to discover more from this house! ~Indiana

  • Ma Bête sounds like it must be smelled to be believed- so that one was most intriguing to me. Plus I am always looking for another animalic to try. I have tried Eris Mx before and loved it, and I really hope to try the rest of the line soon! Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Two lucky winners…..how nice. I LOVE Green Spell and own a bottle from when it was first released. A love at first sniff for me. Ma Bete would most interest me as I was in my local shop and another customer was raving about it. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely article Karl! The Eris Parfum that intrigues me most is Ma Bête with it’s intense animalic core and indoles, aldehydes and spices – “soap meets skank”. i love indolic and animalic perfumes, particularly unapologetic ones, and this one sounds perfect. I live in the US.

  • All of these fragrances from Eris Parfums sound unique, which is certainly a rarity these days. My favorite description is for Night Flower. Karl calls it an ode to sensuality with a light touch of leather. I appreciate the allusion to crimson as well. MD, USA

  • for my taste the most interesying Eris Parfum seems Green Spell and Ma Bête. I live in Greece,EU

  • Just wow, Eris Parfums I think only makes true gems.
I think from the three is Ma Bete, since I am a huge lover of beast mode fragrance and that are animalic that deliver an experience that seems from another world, I also liked Green spell because of the combination of fruity, vegetal and animalic notes.
    USA here.

  • It is hard for me to say with one of the Eric Parfums intrigues me most. As I read the descriptions, I thought that each one was “the one” for me. But I will choose one. I think Night flower would be for me as the slight spiciness and musky base sound so warming.

I would enjoy trying the discovery set. Thanks for the opportunity to win. In Virginia, USA

  • Night Flower with tuberose and suede sounds amazing and it’s the one that speaks the most to me. I like their bottles with the black line at the top, looks classy. I’m in the EU.

  • Such a nice selection from Eris Parfums, I am intrigued. Of all the fragrances mentioned, Night Flower sounds like a dream – bergamot, tuberose, cardamom, Tonka are some of my favourite notes!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice review on this brand Karl.

I do love the sound of Ma Bete – the soap meets skank, the dichotomy of washed and unwashed skin, is really a wonderful play in olfaction. Looking at the notes, it is quite interesting to see both Honduran styrax and a synthetic animalic accord – another point of contrast?

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I have sampled, twice Mxxx. Which I love. It’s on my wish list. I have not had the opportunity to try anything else from the house yet, but I have read great things. I would love to win the discovery set. Thank you for the draw!! US.

  • They all sound kind of shocking by description and images, but as I love the work of Antoine Lie and I know they are all balanced, modern and not so dirty as they may sound, even if cafleurebon propose “half douched bodies straight out of the shower and back for a second instalment”. Yes, Ma Bête sounds the most intriguing to me, but I would like to discover more. Thank you!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I first heard of Eris Parfums a while ago but I never got to try anything yet from them. I’d love to try their discovery set. The fragrance called “Green Spell” intrigues me the most because it contains a fig leaves accord and fig leaves is one of my favorite notes in fragrances. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Claumarchini says:

Although I have a soft spot for tuberose and when temperatures start to fall I pull out the heavy ones, Green Spell definitely attracted my attention: I love galbanum, tomato leaf and fig leaf and the combination of floral and vegetal notes sounds really interesting, “light” and a mood-lifter for me!
    Greetings from Italy

  • You caught my attention when you pointed out that Eris Parfums can be considered an “anarchist” in a taxonomy of smells. Ma Bête certainly meets that description with its “soap meets skank” mix of animalics, spice, and aldehydes. Night Flower doesn’t sound nearly as challenging, with its lush spiced florals, but birch tar is an interesting addition to the mix. Green Spell intrigues me the most and I expect it will be my favorite of the three. I love the fizz of black currant in restrained amounts, while both tomato leaf and fig are among my favorite green notes. Green Spell sounds like a must-try. Thanks for the review, Karl.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.
