Green, how I want you green.
Green wind. Green branches.
The ship out on the sea
and the horse on the mountain.
With the shade around her waist
she dreams on her balcony,
green flesh, her hair green,
with eyes of cold silver.
~ Romance Sonámbulo, Federico García Lorca

I crave Lorca’s green: passionate, dangerous, vividly inscrutable. I’ve been in pursuit of that hue since I devoured these verses as a young girl. Green as the greater mystery, phantasm, a ghostly presence occupying the imagination rendered tangible. Amorphous longings of thwarted desire. In the hands of Art and Olfaction award winning artisan perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, my spectral, fleshly green has assumed the form of DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax – one of her many recent fragrant offerings. It garnered my attention immediately, with its inimitable shape-shifting jolie-laide persona: a perfume which commences as delectably poisonous, only to dry down into the fuzzily amiable, adorable creature it later becomes.

Ida’s stunning vintage emerald earrings

The perfumer and I share a passion for vintage fragrances and jewelry (although not my assigned birthstone, emeralds have long held me in their thrall, and represent the rising sign and Venus placement in my natal chart.). Their association with truth, love, fidelity and healing resonates deeply – although these facets were not known to me when I first succumbed to their allure. I’m of the belief that truths and revelations eventually out themselves over the fullness of time – with or without our say-so. DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax affected me powerfully from the very start on a level I couldn’t explain away.

Aldehydes fizz and lend their effervescent voice to Emerald Hyrax’s ensuing verdant symphony which skillfully employs galbanum, cognac, green tea, cypress, pine moss and needle and green oakmoss in its aromatic arsenal of greens. Dawn has constructed a tender fern accord comprised of bergamot, liatrix, rose and rose geranium (no lavender listed) and tonka – a suave delight. Its floral complexity is a wonder. In homage to the great chypres we both love, no expense is spared: glorious dollops of three different jasmines, muguet, violet, orris and lily grace its expansive heart. Velvety musk and a dash of amber consort with a cornucopia of animalics: cumin, African stone tincture (the hyrax!), castoreum, civet and ambergris bejewel Emerald Hyrax’s base. I perceive slender threads of salinity in this perfume which weave in and out, as if on a loom. Earth and ocean conjoin.

One of the unforeseen pleasures of  DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax entails its transition into the realm of playfulness. After all the drama has played out – the sparks, dark undercurrents, the winsome bouquet – Emerald Hyrax has developed into cosy aromatic comfort, a charming furry-bellied companion. If that isn’t sorcery – what is?

Notes: aldehydes, bergamot, cognac, cumin, fern accord, damask rose absolute, centifolia rose absolute, Egyptian rose geranium, green tea absolute, neroli, orange blossom, grandiflorum jasmine, juhi jasmine, jasmine sambac, muguet, violet, orris concrete, liatrix, lily, cypress, galbanum, African stone tincture, castoreum, civet, ambergris, amber, ciste absolute, green oakmoss, pine moss, pine needle absolute, musk, tonka bean absolute

Sample thoughtfully provided by the perfumer – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

  • Thank you for this opportunity! Based on Idas review, the African stone tincture and grandiflorum seem like very interesting notes to try! This fragrance seems incredibly interesting and something I haven’t sampled before. From Connecticut USA.

  • Oh my goodness! I must admit I was hoping Ca Fleure Bon would do a giveaway for this particular scent: I’ve been hearing about it for a little while and REALLY want to try it. Emerald Hyrax sounds like it would scratch a lot of my particular itches: my loves of green perfumes, vintage style chypres, and my newly emerging interest in animalics. Just look at that incredible notes list! And then Ida describes it as a “spectral, freshly green”… yeah, I’m dying to smell this. THANK YOU for this giveaway!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • OoooOOoooo! Thank you for this! I’m a big fan of hyraceum notes! The civet and castoreum are a welcome addition as well, as I quite love my musk. I enjoyed the ‘jewelry’ aspect / comparisons of the review! I have yet to try and DSH, but I will probably seek out a sample of this!
    From Canada.

  • DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax sounds so mysterious and intriguing. I love fragrances that completely transform as they dry down. I also like that this is a playful fragrance. It sounds amazing.

I live in Houston Texas and would like to enter the giveaway. Thanks

  • The unique and very beautiful notes of this fragrance appeal to me. I never tried tried DSH Perfumes but I think Emerald Hyrax sounds fascinating. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Great review by Ida by the fantastic house of DSH Parfumes. I have tried some, and my favorite until now is Bourbon Vanilla.
I think that this one would be a perfect addition for my collectionm because I love green fragrances with a twist, and the cognac surely make this outstanding. Eager to try this.

I love green! I love emeralds and green everything. The notes sound like an explosion of green. Can’t wait to try this. My favorite DHS perfumes are Giverny In Bloom and Jacinthe de Sapphir but I’ve only tried a few. NY State USA. Thank you for the draw.

  • The way this sounds like it lifts and doesn’t weigh but is rich with pleasure!! I am definitely intrigued by the stone tincture and I adore a broad floral blended with a crisp pine needle, added here is amber to warm it all. Sounds divine.
    I don’t have a favorite…yet!

So many notes and so much green! For me, green is nature, poison, truth and water. With multiple layers and meanings, DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax seems like a gem.

  • I would absolutely love to try Emerald Hyrax! I love DSH scents and have been lucky to try a few now as i am I’m U.K. so it is not so easy, picking a favourite is not easy but Iris Tuxedo has my heart closely followed by Black Viola. Emerald Hyrax appeals as I love the idea of green and the sea merging together, also the pure enchantment of green. Keeping everything crossed

  • Lovely review! I also love love love greens (fragrances, clothes, places), and I was especially interested when you wrote about the dry down evolving into something cozy and soft- sounds like the best of both worlds. I haven’t yet tried any DSH fragrances but I would really like to try them. Writing from the EU.

  • Emerald Hyrax by the notes an it’s creator must be a huge perfume, and may be the answer to my Hyrax quest! Thanks from Romania

  • I Like the colour green, Tea, cognac, Emerald, really interested how is this going to smell. I wanna try this House! I live in the EU

  • Earth and ocean conjoin- how beautiful and how rare to have both qualities in a perfume. My favourite DSH is Mata Hari.
    I live in the UK.

  • I adore perfumes with cumin and neroli, and this sounds great! Would be my chance to try DSH perfumes for the first time. Hi from the EU!

  • Mary Stephens Mitchell says:

Green is my favorite color, and I’m enchanted by every part of Ida’s review, particularly the way she explains the verdurous mystery of the perfume! My favorite fragrance by DSH is Axis Mundi. I’m in the USA.

  • I confess that I’m skeptical that a stone tincture will have any smell at all! But I love green perfumes, so this sounds very interesting. I think my favorite DSH is still Scent of Hope (or is it Peace?), though I also really like her nard-based perfume.

  • One of the unforeseen pleasures of DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax entails its transition into the realm of playfulness. After all the drama has played out – the sparks, dark undercurrents, the winsome bouquet – Emerald Hyrax has developed into cosy aromatic comfort, a charming furry-bellied companion. If that isn’t sorcery – what is? A beautiful description by Ida has piqued my interest in this house and composition sounds absolutely equisite. I am in love with the notes especially cognac, rose absolute and cumin. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • musk and a dash of amber consort with a cornucopia of animalics: cumin, African stone tincture (the hyrax!), castoreum, civet and ambergris bejewel Emerald Hyrax’s base. I perceive slender threads of salinity in this perfume which weave in and out, as if on a loom. Earth and ocean conjoin. I am intrigued by the notes especially African stone hyrax in particular. Curious to see how it smells like on skin. A house that I need to explore further. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

Oh my amazingness, what a review, what a creation! Ida has done a fantastic job depicting Emerald Hyrax, and no surprises there taking into consideration how everything vividly green, vintage, aldehydic, abundantly floral and animalic is so close to her heart. I love the inexplicable closeness Ida could feel with this this perfume. It sounds absolutely magical, weaving a multitude of truly precious notes together. I am drawn to the verdancy and poisonous facets which over time turn into furry softness. Higher artistry in a bottle… I have not had the opportunity to try Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s creations as of yet but I know beyond certainty they are special. Thank you from the EU

  • Ida you are so poetic in your description. Generous dollops, velvety musks, sorcery…..just beautiful. The jewelry!!! It’s gorgeous. I started my perfume journey with gourmands, but am now trying to have other styles and green and woods have become favorites. I’d love to win this. I don’t have a favorite DSH, every time I am on the website I become overwhelmed with choices. I will try again. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • First, I always like Ida’s reviews.we must see at least a part of the world through similar eyes. Secondly I have wanted a DSH perfume, but to be honest she offers so many I struggle to choose one. If I were to win this, you would take the burden of picking one off my shoulders. Thirdly, green is my favorite color. Fourthly, well, I just want to win! In maryland

  • All the notes sound amazing, when the weather cools down I feel that’s when I wear aldehydes best. My favorite of DSH is Piment et Chocolat. I live in Texas.

  • What a gorgeous bottle! Obviously it’s a green fragrance but the variety of green seems exceptional, Ida mentions the fern accord, the chypre notes and the galbanum, green tea, pine moss and green oakmoss. The aldehydes seem to provide some fizz. The animalic notes such as civet, castoreum, ambergris and the hyrax are really interesting and seem to provide some heft to the composition. I’m not an emerald baby either but have an affinity for the stone too, Favorite DSH is Cafe Noir. MD, USA.

  • Oh this sounds truly special! As a May baby emerald is my birth stone. The load of animalic notes combined with green notes and florals has peaked my interest. I’ve also been wanting to try Dawn’s work for a long time. Fantastic review! In USA

  • I’ve really been into animalics lately, and combined with the “aromatic arsenal of greens” that Ida described, Emerald Hyrax sounds like a unique take on that genre! I’d love to win the giveaway. I’m in MN, USA and my favorite DSH fragrances are Voices of Trees and Cafe Noir.

  • I just read about this perfume on DSH’s site recently. I love the concept: green aromatics, a fern accord, luxurious animalics drawn from vintage chypres. It doesn’t hurt that the presentation is absolutely beautiful. Like many of Hurwitz’s perfumes, there’s a lot going on here and the notes list is extensive, but the end result is likely just as focused and cohesive as usual. I hope to try this soon. Thanks for the review, Ida.

I’m in the midwest, USA. My favorite DSH perfume is Wasabi Shiso.

  • I enjoy the green and natural aspects. Moss, galbanum, green team, cypress sound really intriguing green notes, so I would like to try this scent. I have not yet tested this perfume house. From EU

  • Bryant Worley says:

After reading this, it is unfortunatr that I have yet to put my nose on a DSH fragrance. Hopefully, this will be the start.

The fragrance was laid out perfectly (with nice visuals) so that someone experienced with fragrant notes can already get an idea of how it smells. And the color is fantastic, and Ida did excellent.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I love all the vintage jewelry pictured! Dawn is a genius of anything, but I agree with Ida, she shines when she does vintage. An old soul for sure! I love green scents and you’ve made this one sound very alluring! Thank you for the draw and the description.

  • I am always impressed by the large number of notes in DSH creations and DSH Perfumes Emerald Hyrax is no exception – it is like experiencing an olfactory orchestra rather than a single instrument. I haven’t tried a DSH perfume yet, but hope to some day. Thanks for this draw and review. From the USA.

  • John McDonald says:

This one sounds like a beast from deepest darkest Africa.
Looking forward to giving this one a sniff.

Thanks for the fantastic writeup Ida.

THis looks like a beautiful green fragrance! I love the use of green notes in this especially the green cognac and all the beautiful green florals.

I’m also a huge fan of the fact that this ended up in the style of a chypre.

    Cheers from WI, USA
