Spiritum, a new French brand was launched with great fanfare in Paris in spring 2022. Founded by Jonathan Dufour, a long-time fragrance aficionado after returning from a spiritual retreat he made in Peru in February 2020; it was there that he realized the importance of the connection between body, soul, spirit… and perfume. Clary sage-incense-sandalwood is the olfactive triptych that he perceived during Shaman’s ceremonies at the retreat. Jonathan then came up with the idea for Spiritum and the collection Numerus, nine fragrances inspired by ancient treatises on numerology, a science that links the laws of the universe and its mysteries with numbers. He chose renowned perfumers Bertrand Duchaufour and Philippe Paparella-Paris to bring the collection to life.

We live in a time time when political, social, climate and health turmoil has shaken us to our core; effecting our physical and psychological well-being. For many there is an attraction to the idea of bringing spirituality and Nature into our daily lives. With Spiritum, Jonathan Dufour chose to anchor his first ever collection by celebrating numerology, letting anyone matching their life path number to a specific perfume.

During the official launch, I had fun discovering which perfume corresponded to my own life path number. I already knew that I was ruled by #6, focused on altruism, sharing, protection and spirituality (I have a mom who taught me astrology and numerology from the time I was a child). In addition, I also wanted to give free rein to my own olfactory perception without being influenced by my predestined number. For this review I focused on Spiritum Carnal Spirit (MY #6!), and Spiritum Solar Soul (#1) which was my favorite of the collection, as well a brief overview of the other “numbers”.

Spiritum Carnal Spirit (Philippe Paparella-Paris)
Number: 6 – Element: earth – Planet: Venus – Power: seduction.
My life path #6 is one linked to altruism, spirituality… and love. Having Venus in Taurus (astrology enthusiasts will understand) was a -confirmation that relationships to people have a prominent place in my life, sometimes with a touch of sensuality, which is one of the aspects of perfumery that attracts me the most. Spiritum Carnal Spirit is a beautiful olfactory illustration of this, and without doubt the most intimate of the collection. Floral and woody, Carnal Spirit is enchantingly soft, velvety and delicate. Not surprising since the osmanthus settles on my skin from the very first seconds (to my great delight: this DL® base was created by Maurice Roucel for Symrise and is one of my favorites in perfumery), accompanied by the notes of juicy pear and those powdery violet. After a few minutes, Carnal Spirit warms up while remaining soft and elegant, driven by the sparkle of ginger and pink and black pepper, and the sensuality of cinnamon and cashmeran. Geranium and lily of the valley announced in the Spiritum Carnal Spirit composition are very discreet, which is always the case on my skin. However, as it evolves, Spiritum Carnal Spirit rounds off thanks to sandalwood, amber and vanilla, with an astonishing note of peach as a conclusion, perhaps in a nod to the inaugural osmanthus. Carnal Spirit corresponds perfectly to what is called a skin fragrance, perceptible by oneself and intimates. Notes: frankincense, Pearadise®, ginger, black and pink pepper, Sichuan pepper, pine needle, jasmine, violet, cedarwood, Osmanthus Guilin DL®, clary sage, cashmeran, geranium, lily of the valley, nutmeg, cinnamon, musk, sandalwood, amber, vanilla, peach.

Spiritum Solar Soul (Bertrand Duchaufour)
Number: 1 – Element: fire – Planet: Sun – Power: ambition.
Solar Soul was a standout choice for me because it is so “Duchaufour.” The perfumer’s signature is immediately recognizable and evokes so many of his fragrances that have captivated me over the years. Spiritum Solar Soul gets off to a flying start, with an amaretto-anise-clary sage trio rounded off by tonka bean. It’s mind-blowing in terms of sweetness, with an aromatic hint that gives it an incredible pop! As the minutes go by, this olfactory fire grows, fueled by dried fig and immortelle, which bring a solar and vibrant density, contrasted by a juicy note of fig milk. Then the fire subsides, Solar Soul reveals a delicate rose with a bewitching scent that stays on my wrist for a long time without fading. The drydown is a pure marvel of woods and balms that keeps Spiritum Solar Soul in a spiritual fire of incense, camphor with a touch of sweetness, then vanilla and benzoin. Oud, sandalwood, and driftwood are akin to a landing strip after an adventurous trip close to the Sun. Exquisite and bewitching, Solar Soul is an explosive, burning fragrance. Notes: amaretto, anise, clary sage, aromatic freshness, rose, tea, fig milk, dried fig, immortelle absolute, sandalwood, tonka absolute, vanilla, benzoin, oud, incense, musk, driftwood.
