One of the things I missed most while living in the United Arab Emirates is having four distinct seasons. The UAE has many things going for it but the seasons, we would jokingly refer to as “hot” and “hotter”, are not top of my list. Fall in New England has always been my favorite time of the year with the brilliant foliage, crisp sunny days and cool clear nights. Since coming back to the US my family has enjoyed many an evening out at our little fire pit roasting marshmallows for S’mores and snuggling up under fuzzy blankets to keep out the chill.

I am sure I am not alone in rediscovering these simple pleasures in life, especially as we have endured time apart from friends and family throughout the pandemic. During these trying times, I find myself more often reaching for “comfort scents” and maybe that is my subconscious reminding me that sometimes we just need to wrap ourselves up in a scented “fuzzy blanket” to keep out the chill and stress of life.

When I first read Christelle Laprade’s inspiration for her newest creation, Milk for Commodity, I knew this would be just the scented hug I have been craving. “In creating Milk, I was inspired by the memory of a family vacation in the Fall, when we spent hours around hot wood-fires, telling stories and making s’mores. I wanted to capture the intimate nostalgia of this moment in a fragrance. Milk is a balance of sweet, milky, marshmallow elements contrasted with a firewood accord. Smoked Mahogany wood, cold milk and Siam benzoin are also all essential olfactive facets in this memory of mine.” – Christelle Laprade

I was also intrigued by Commodity’s idea of creating three versions of each scent they release. I think it is a wonderful way to customize the scent to a wider audience right from the start instead of making us wait to see if a flanker will come out in a denser “parfum” or “intense” version or a lighter “fresh” one.
Commodity Fragrances brand “re-founder”, Vicken Arslanian (founder and President of Europerfumes) very elegantly explains on the company’s website, “Fragrance isn’t one-scent-fits-all. We’ve created Scent Space to give you greater control over the intensity and projection of your scent; over how you – and the ones around – experience your fragrance. Each Commodity fragrance is available in three different Scent Space concentrations: Personal, Expressive, and Bold.”

Despite the name, the milk accord is rather fleeting, at least in the Expressive version that I have experienced. On my skin, the fragrance seems to move quickly into the roasted marshmallows, wood and tonka. A lovely mix that while definitely gourmand, is not sugary sweet. My mind takes me immediately to the fire pit and freshly toasted marshmallows all gooey and sticky. In this version there is not much smoke but a nice dose of soft woods to balance out the sweetness. The scent is true to the brand’s aesthetic, keeping things simple and accessible. The coziness and comfort is evident right from the start and remains for hours, enveloping the wearer in a warm embrace. This could easily by worn by men or women and was universally enjoyed by my entire family as we spent a November evening roasting marshmallows and creating new joyful memories.
Commodity Milk was launched in 2021. The nose behind this fragrance is Christelle Laprade.
Top note is cold milk accord; middle notes are marshmallow and skin Musk; base notes are mahogany wood and Tonka bean.
