Kajal – meaning kohl in the Indian culture – a natural product that protects and beautifies the eyes; or from the Arabic word “khajal”– modesty, humility, and kindness-Moe Khalef

My first encounter with Kajal fragrances was at Esxence 2019 where I met Moe Khalef, the owner and creative director of Kajal Perfumes (a truly great man, so humble) and I quickly became a fan. He explained art in all its different forms are all sources of inspiration for his perfumes. This is apparent not only in the quality of the perfumes but in the flacons and “signature” intricate stoppers.

Kajal Perfumes LAMAR (Mark Buxton) 2020: Liquid gold, known as “lamar” in Arabic, was used in many aspects of decorating artworks: in architecture, jewelry, and manuscript illumination. In the creation process of Kajal LAMAR, the brand engaged the versatile and renowned master perfumer Mark Buxton, (whose fragrances include Comme des garcons EDP , Le Labo Vetiver 46 and his own line of eponymous fragrances    to name a few). “My inspiration for Kajal LAMAR, was to create a rich, natural, warm, long-lasting fragrance, by using high quality natural products”. Straight out this is a fruit-centric fragrance. It’s not Carmen Miranda fruity-much more urbane and sophisticated, with hints of spices (coriander and cardamom), a touch of toffee and rich rose. If you think these ingredients are for women perfumes only, perhaps you need to rethink your ideas of “gender” in fragrance. Mark Buxton was a great choice for perfumer as he’s able to balance the explosion of tart fruit (pineapple, bergamot, berries) with an ambery vanillic, honeyed base. And, as everything with Mr. Buxton -it is a true original You can read more about Kajal Lamar in Editor Ermano Picco’s Pitti 2021 report (a Best of Show Award) here

Kajal Homme II (Christian Carbonnel & Rosendo Mateu) 2021: When I saw the “II” after Kajal Homme II, I thought it might be a flanker of 2005’s Classic Kajal Homme. What they have in common are the perfumers (Christian Carbonnel aka Chris Maurice known for such scents as Masque Milano Mandala,  Xerjoff More than Words, to name just two) and master perfumer Rosendo Mateau and a sense of classic elegance. Kajal Homme II is a completely different fragrance. It is a fresh woody-aromatic EDP and notes  of bergamot, lavender and atlas cedar wood predominate. The twist is the peach and cinnamon that adds a bit of sweetness and in my opinion it is gender fluid.

Kajal Perfumes Dahab (Christian Carbonnel & Rosendo Mateu) 2015: I have never smelled Kajal Perfumes Dahab. But judging from Steven’s video and Editor Nicoleta Tomsa’s review, (an excerpt from what she wrote “Kajal Dahab (translated as gold)  promises and delivers an opulent fruity overdose fit for the appetite of a god”). I need to change that SOON..

Top notes are bergamot and granny smith apple; middle notes are passionfruit, coriander, and cedar; base notes are patchouli, musk, and amber.

    I enjoyed Steven’s video and descriptions of each fragrance. His favorite seemed to be Lamar which is also the one that sounds best to me. It seems from Michelyn’s intro it is at least one of her favorites as well. I also liked how she discussed the perfumers and the meaning of Kajal as well as Lamar and Dahab.     It’s always fun to learn more about an relatively unknown fragrance brand. I haven’t tried any of these, but Kajal Homme II sound really interesting to me. I like how Steven mentions the way the peach and the cinnamon combine to make this such a wonderful scent. I would love to win a full bottle of Kajal Homme II and add it to my collection.     Michelyn says Lamar has fruity-floral composition and also has a touch of toffee. It is made by Mark Buxton. The name of the brand comes from kohl in the Indian culture. Steven explains Kajal Homme II has cinnamon, peach, and lavender playing major roles in the composition and it is not masculine but more of a unisex creation. Steven also thinks it is quite a luxurious composition. My choice is Kajal Homme II. I am in US.

Enjoyed Steven’s profile of these 3 and the immense respect and regard he has for the perfumers. Michelyn vouching for Mr. Khalef as a humble man who appreciates the artistic quality and building his fragrances is a huge plus…sounds like the type of person you genuinely want to support.     For most of us fragrances are a passionate hobby…forth both Steven and Michelyn it’s much more and it shows as each go above and beyond to bring us such fantastic, informative videos and articles.

    Michelyn never fails to deliver the “knowledge behind the fragrance” and Steven always delivers exactly what the consumer needs to know about each fragrance in his reviews.

    Kajal Homme II sounds great. As a southerner with two peach trees in my backyard…I would love to have a fragrance that pulls off a realistic peach note off without being feminine. Steven’s review makes me think that Homme II may fit the bill.

    My favorite reason for watching Steven’s videos is the vivid description of each fragrance! Rose wasn’t a note that I enjoyed in the past, but that’s because I didn’t have the right fragrance. I started falling in love with rose fragrances after I ourchased Portrait of a Lady from Frédéric Malle. And I am 100% sure I will absolutely love Steven’s recommendation on Kajals Lamar!

    I’ve tried all 3. Lamar is my favorite on the list and my favorite from Kajal period. Dahab at the time was high quality, but wasn’t for me. I think my nose has matured significantly since then. I prefer the original Homme over 2, but it’s quality stuff as well. Should I win, I’d take another crack at Dahab!

    Learning the meaning of Kajal was very cool. Steven always gives quality reviews. I don’t remember Dahab being that long lasting, but according to him( and his wife), it is. Hope to try it again!

    Following the new IG! Interestingly enough, I played a character named Lamar in an acclaimed production of Godspell once, so the name gets me every time. Totally agree with questioning the gender associations that come with fruity fragrances. Never judge a book by its cover…although if the sheer beauty of the bottles is any indication of the fragrance inside, then I may need to reasses that proverb. 🙂 Really hope you do get to try Dahab Michelyn! From Steven’s review, I love the sound of the pineapple and red berries in the opening of Lamar, but I’m also quite partial to the aromatic components of Homme II, being an earnest fan of green and herbal woodies. The peach and cinnamon sounds like a wonderful twist. Might be the tie breaker. Yep. Would love to win Homme II. USA

    I’ve heard a lot of great things about Kajal fragrances, though I still haven tried any of them. All three sound amazing and even though I am a woman the one that appeals to me the most is Kajal Homme II and I would pick that one. From both Steven’s and Michelyn’s description it sounds like an amazing citrusy and lavender signature scent, with a woody base. I am really intrigued with peach and cinnamon notes being added to this composition. I really love those notes and they sound like a very interesting twist I would love to experience.     Glad to hear that Moe Khalef is a fellow enthusiast of the arts. I’ve often thought that artists, particularly painters, could depict and communicate reality with their intricate paintings better than philosophers could with their exhaustive writings. I also appreciate the artistic flair that aspects of the bottles have, such as the caps that clearly draw inspiration from the Islamic art piece in the photo provided in this article. So I can only imagine this same artistry is further augmented in the fragrances. I’ve never gotten my nose on a Kajal fragrance and would absolutely love to!     Back in 2019 , on our anniversary my husband brought me to Paris. On the exact day we went to Montmartre, and I ate the best eclair in my life, speculoos eclair with red fruits and pineapple. The name of the place was “Pain Pain” . Steven and Michelyn combined take on Lamar was so vivid , i felt like I’m in Paris eating eclairs again, smelling the roses hubby left on the table. I almost started drooling . Liquid gold called Lamar I’d love to win.
    Kajal Homme II feels refined and classy , Dahab with ripe pasionfruit sweetness, mixed with woody , musky and nutty elements i find really catchy.
    I know Joorie, because my sister in law owns it, but that’s the only Kajal scent I know. High quality spicy sweet rose ,with honey.

    In both Michelyn’s and Steven’s reviews, you can feel the enthusiasm and joy they get from the fragrances, along with the fact that they break down the fragrances well enough for you to be able to visualize how it’s going to smell on your skin.

    The Kajal perfumes sound great, each of the selection has their own characters and twists. The way Steven describes them , it’s really hard to pick the favourite. Dahab is sweet musky fruity scent, Lamar is a fruity rose with amber vanilic base and Homme II is herbal and woody with peach. At the end I would choose Lamar.

    I love to watch Steven’s videos. While I have pretty substantial familiarity with designer and niche perfume houses and their offerings, I have less knowledge about the creative noses behind the various scents and find it interesting to know what other fragrances have been developed by the same perfumer. Lamar sounds particularly interesting to me! Rose + jasmine combo with spice and fruit is absolutely up my alley. As a side note, I never knew Lamar meant “liquid gold” in Arabic! My friend’s middle name is Lamar, so I will have to ask them know if they are aware of the meaning of their middle name 🙂

    I wasn’t aware Kajal II is not a flanker! I normally do not bother with fragrances whenever I find them too similar. Understanding now that Kajal Homme II is a completely different fragrance, my interest is piqued! The original Kajal Homme is an absolutely amazing fragrance. The high quality and amazing scent make this one of my favorite fragrances from the brand. I am certain Kajal Homme II will be a completely different experience, but just as great.     What I really enjoyed about these three is the name, meaning, and the artistic story behind them. Lamar means light, and liquid gold, which the perfume is meant to deliver and mimic a golden warm shine of the sun. Then Dahab as gold, to deliver appetite for god.
    It just mesmerizes me with this kind of inspiration and artistic story behind them, as I always say, perfumery is the best art! <3

    Whoever designer Kajal hired for their bottle, he, or she did astonishing work. If I have to rate the bottles alone 10/10 .
    I have samples of Dahab , and Kajal Homme II I received in a FB group swap. Dahab i think is juicy musky gourmand done really well. Smells natural to me, which is rare for gourmands.
    Kajal Homme II is very classy and gentlemanly fragrance , and like Dahab smells natural too.
    Lamar is the one I’m interested the most , maybe it’s because I haven’t tried it, I’m not sure. The pineapple, cranberries, rose and sophisticated base tipped the scale i guess
    No wonder Lamar means liquid gold in Arabic

    I find amazing that there’s ALWAYS a house you’ve NEVER heard of. It’s a struggle to keep up sometimes! When someone describes a fragrance as crossing peach with cinnamon, as Steven does, it gets my imagination running to try and get my brain to produce the smell.
    Michelin challenges us to not pre judge a fragrance from its ingredients when it comes to femininity or masculinity when he talks about Lamar which as you smell more and more niche fragrances becomes good advice
    It would be fantastic to win Kajal Homme II

    To be honest all I can think about after watching Stevens video and after reading the article is Lamar.
    Lamar sounds like a dream, I mean liquid gold, how can that description not make you drool?

    Although, after rewatching the video again Dahab sounds just as beautiful. Don’t think I’ve ever tried a fragrance with passionfruit, sounds nice but I’m a bit worried it would be too feminine for me.

    To be honest I kinda zooned out when Steven started talking about Homme 2, mostly because I usually don’t like woody aromtaic or fougere fragrances, just not my style. But again, after rewatching the video and Steven started talking about peach and cinnamon my eyebrows went up, that’s more my taste. And then I heard praline as a description and now I’m positivly boggled. I can’t imagine how Homme 2 would smell. I mean woody aromatic, lavender and then peach, cinnamon and sweet praline?
    I’ve gotta at least try this some time.

    If I would win I would pick Lamar. It feels like the safest choice considering my taste, although Dahab also sounds very nice I fear it to be too feminine.
    Homme 2 I definitely want to try just to see how these notes work together, but I feel it to be too risky as a full bottle.

    OK, so the idea or dream of trying Kajal creations has caught up with me big time here! I love the journey Michelyn and then Steven took us on. One can see the unbridled enjoyment they experienced smelling the three fragrances. I am grateful for the vivid descriptions. Also, trying to make up my mind which I had thought I managed to make up but then things started getting heated :).     I enjoyed looking at all the bottles, they are really works of art and the brand has done them absolute justice. I love how they are able to balance strong fruity/sweet scents that are traditionally associated with feminine fragrances and wield them into gender fluid scents.

    I certainly would love to smell Kajal Homme II.

    I choose Kajal Lamar. Steven really sold it with his, as always, vivid description and enthusiasm. It seems like Lamar was his favorite. Michelyn’s description of the juxtaposition of the juicy fruits and the deep amber sounded intoxicating. It doesn’t hurt that it was formulated by Mark Buxton, as I like his style a lot.

    I’m a Barber , and i already wear Kajal Homme on almost all occasions, total of $370 well spent (2x$185) , I mean I finished my first bottle, and immediately bought a second one .
    Lamar is just a bit more expensive, but for such high end nighttime pineapple , rose and vanilla fragrance, obviously Michelyn and Steven are impressed too , price i think is well justified.
    About when Michelyn said , why would anyone consider rose and toffee not appropriate for men ? It’s late 2021 , not 1980 .
    Homme II sounds good too , formal occasions fragrance maybe?
    I just like to add i really like Kajal heavy metal caps, and the whole presentation.

    Those bottles are absolutely gorgeous. All three sound lovely and the staying power seems quite impressive. Chris Maurice is a master of his craft, it’s a perfect fit for him to collaborate with such an illustrious fragrance house. Appreciate Michelyn giving some backround to each fragrance and the meaning behind the name. Sounds like all three are considered unisex offerings. Steven has a knack for descriptive terminology and it’s always interesting to here the personal stories he shares as well. Dahab sounds nuclear in performance.

    I liked the description for Homme II – It is a fresh woody-aromatic EDP and notes of bergamot, lavender and atlas cedar wood predominate. The twist is the peach and cinnamon that adds a bit of sweetness and in my opinion it is gender fluid.

    The bottles for all three of these are BEAUTIFUL, they’re all so elegant. They all seem appealing, however the one that stood out the most for me from the scent profiles was Kajal Homme II, the cinnamon with peaches sounds delicious and the performance from what I can see off of reviews seems to be impressive, I’d love a chance to win a bottle of this!

    Since to my surprise Michelyn said she never smelled it , I’ll start with Dahab.
    The fragrance is more complex than some people realize , it’s way more than a topical gourmand. Opening surprised me with how fresh it is, bergamot and Granny Smith apple are zesty and tart. It’s getting sweeter in the base, but there’s no single moment from the first spray, until the drydown, when I can say , ok there’s syrupy sweetness , and being Traditionally trained in Paris Pastry Chef I know syrupy sweetness. Lamar is much sweeter, I would call it syrupy swet , but not Dahab.
    In the drydown Dahab is really musky, woody and kind of dusty , retaining its mostly natural fruity sweetness. The smell reminds me of eating Granny Smith Mousse Cake with passion fruit, and non candied slices of the apple on top , while sitting next to just cut Cedar Lumber.
    Lamar, the best Kajal in my opinion, smells like Vanilla Cake with Strawberries and Pineapple , I do it almost every day at my bakery.
    Homme II to me is different than Dahab , and Lamar, upscale , polished around the edges fragrance.
    I’d love to win Lamar.

    I loved learning that Lamar is the name of the artwork involving liquid gold and the bottles are definitely stunning! I was not aware of Steven’s channel but I’m happy to have come across him, his reviews are succinct and matter-of-fact. So refreshing, such a change from the oohing and aahing of other reviewers. Lamar has been on my radar for a while, I would be delighted to try it because I chronically love the smell of fresh pineapple but I’ve been chronically underwhelmed by its olfactory interpretation. Regardless of my pineapple-related rant, these seem very interesting perfumes. Greetings from Greece!

    You guys have picked my interest in this brand with your in-depth description of the fragrances and the brand itself. From Michelyn I learned about the meaning behind the names of the perfumes and the perfumers with a clear note breakdown, while from Steven I got immersed into the wearing experience.
    A house I would definitely like to immerse myself in.

    This is a house I’m very interested in but haven’t yet tried. Michelyn’s comment about art being an inspiration is evident from the truly stunning bottles. I love Stevens’ story about his wife and Dahab’s longevity (and appreciate him noting all last well)!     These sound amazing. Steven’s comparison of Dahab to Erba Pura instantly has me paying attention. He also states it’s his longest lasting fragrance and that must be saying something. I’m also surprised to learn that Lamar has universally positive reviews online. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that about a fragrance. The pineapple and red berry opening sounds great. From Steven’s review, I’d choose Dahab but Michelyn mentions that Lamar has that coriander and cardamom with a touch of coffee and I love those notes! I have yet to try this house and I suppose were I to win I would chose Dahab but it’s a really close call. Thanks for the draw. USA.

    Kajal is underrated house , more people need to know their fragrances . I’ve smelled or sampled all , including the copper looking Homme II.
    If i have to rate Lamar, Dahab and Homme II:
    1. I had high expectations for Lamar from the very beginning, juicy fruity ambery gourmand , the best Kajal in my opinion.
    2. Dahab , truly mouthwatering , mostly linear green apple, passion fruit and musk fragrance, what I get in the opening, is what I get in the drydown, or at least 80%. I get the cedar, but it’s supporting, and not one of the main players on the field.
    3.Kajal Homme II , versatile fragrance, pleasing and elegant .
    I’d love to win Lamar, liquid gold indeed.
    By the way I’m wearing another Kajal right now- Fiddah.
    Of course I followed @cafleurebonofficial ASAP after learned what those despicable people did. Unfortunately hacking, and stealing IG accounts is a common problem nowadays.

    Kajal Perfumes Homme II (2021), Kajal Perfumes Lamar (2020) and Kajal Dahab (2015)+ 3 you should be wearing draw.I just recently started with niche fragrances and watching Steven (Redolessence) on YouTube, he is very informative on his channel.Because of him I now have a place to read about different articles here on cafleurebon.My first two samples I recently purchased was Elysium Cologne and Bond#9 scent of peace for him.I absolutely love both of them but for some reason the projection and silage does not last long on me , so I’m going to get 3 decants of Kajal HommeII, Lamar and Dahab to try. I know the article states to be specific about my choice should I win the drawing, but I would ask that you pick for me given that I have yet to receive my 3 decants of Kajal,Please use the above mentioned fragrances to make a choice for me.

    I enjoyed Michelyn’s intro to the house of Kajal. Although I knew the name, I didn’t know the vision of Moe Khalef. I love when a fragrance house becomes more than perfumes but also a person’s dreams.

    Steven’s complete reviews are a gift because he really gives me the feeling of the fragrances, not just the notes.

    My thoughts on each of these fragrances:

    Kajal Homme II – Peach and cinnamon are lovely together
    Kajal Lamar – Fruity vanilla amber, oh my! The rose and jasmine sounds like a beautiful twist!
    Kajal Dahab – Passionfruit and musk with a woodsy dry down sounds like something I would enjoy when I want a fruity fragrance in the winter time.

    I’m having a hard time choosing one of these so I will pick for my husband today and I hope to win Kajal Homme II.

    Dahab I know, it smells like picnic basket full of fruits , juiciness and other surprises.
    Kajal Homme II sounds like a business meetings fragrance. Fresh and clean start , citrusy, woody and musky. The addition of fruity sweetness is making it even more versatile.
    And Lamar , fruits drizzled with remnants of vanillic dessert , sounds completely unisex, 100% . About what Michelyn said about “gender” in perfumery, I don’t think such thing exists. To me you should wear what you like .
    Lamar bottle design is fantastic, sounds delicious, my choice if I win.

    I appreciate Michelyn’s intro. and Steven’s review-both of them were informative concerning Kajal (I haven’t tried anything yet from Kajal). I concluded that I would probably prefer to win Kajal Homme II if I win the draw. According to Michelyn’s intro. and Steven’s review, all three fragrances seem fruity, but Homme II seems like it would be the one which I would like the most (it also seemed to be the most masculine-leaning of the three).     What i found interesting, is that Steven swapped Kajal Homme , with Kajal Homme II in his updated top 3 Kajal fragrance , 2021 edition.
    I have the pleasure of knowing Kajal Homme II, Dahab and Lamar.
    Being a vain guy i was so impressed by Sebastian review of Kajal Homme here on Cafleurebon, and also his claims it’s one of the best masculine fragrances on the market .
    Sampled it , and bought it a few days after. Spectacular fragrance.
    The other Homme II brother is fresh, invigorating, and refined fragrance i also own . I love both, but higher compliment factor goes to Kajal Homme II , if you care.
    Dahab to me is sweet, but also really tart, and becomes musky and woody in the base . It’s less sweeter than Erba Pura, to me comparisons are kind of vague .
    Lamar “gold experience” surprised me, juicy fruity, with gourmand base. I don’t know why, but I smell marigolds in Lamar.
    Amazing fragrance I really like to win.

    What I enjoyed about Michelyn’s introduction is learning that Lamar is named after and inspired by the liquid gold decorative technique in architecture, jewelry, and of course the glorious manuscript illumination Arabian culture is known for. What I enjoyed about Steven’s video is the level of detail, how in depth he goes into the individual notes of every fragrance, and how he makes sure to touch on strength and longevity.
