What makes chocolate so appealing in fragrance? And how photo-realistic do you want your perfume to be… after all NO ONE wants to smell like a candy bar. Which brings me to Xerjoff Symphonium, one of my favorites, with citrus and juicy mandarin notes, spiced just right with hints of sweet woody cardamom and seductive musky finish.  Xerjoff Symphonium is definitely a gourmand, but not cloying; the olfactive equivalent of dark chocolate surrounding an orange creamy center, wrapped in the most delectable vanilla. Some of the earthy qualities of the chocolate accord itself, as well as the anchoring oud from Laos and Thai keep the fragrance from veering into something too candy-like to wear. Complex, with great longevity and sillage, Xerjoff Symphonium is simply Irresistible and one of the best chocolate fragrances I have smelt. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-In-Chief

    I think sometimes it’s easy to discount a scent as just being the first thing we smell and while this scent does seem to be like that at a glance, there is a certain sense of depth that I have yet to experience that I would love to if given the opportunity!

    Michelyn says Xerjoff Symphonium is not overpowering gourmand, also thanks to the inclusion of Laotian Oud. Stephen also refers to the same points that Laotian Oud is one of the friendly ouds. Stephen calls Xerjoff Symphonium as one of the top 3 chocolate fragrances he own, possibly number one in his collection. I have not tried many chocolate fragrances so I am inexperienced in this area. I am in US.

    Steven’s video offered a comprehensive review of Symphonium. I enjoyed how he provided all details about this fragrance from the presentation to the notes and ingredients, including the level of quality associated with each characteristic. I do own Xerjoff fragrances but not this one. I have had a chance to briefly get my nose on this and both Steven and Michelyn were right on point with its beautiful scent, from my recollection of the event.
    I highly value the opinions of both Steven and Michelyn. Via this article and Steven’s video this fragrance appears to be one of the best they have both smelled. Going to have to add this one to my collection….maybe through this giveaway 😉 USA

    I enjoyed learning from Steven how this fragrance differs from other chocolate centric fragrances. It sounds amazing and has a wonderful reputation. Michelyn’s intro was nice in that it explains that other facets of the perfume keep one from smelling like a candy bar.     Steven mentioned that chocolate doesn’t smell powdery but is photo realistic which makes me happy because I’m a gourmand lover. And let’s not forget about the creamy orange center. This sounds like a pure treat. This description immediately brought back memories of my grandmother setting out those assorted flavored Brachs candies when I was a kid, one of the flavors being an orange filled chocolate roll. I love chocolate fragrances.

    What I like about Steven review on Xerjoff Symphonium is how he described the chocolate. And how Laos Oud is smooth and wearable. And have the orange still lingering around after 20 minutes. I also love the longevity of it. I most definitely would love to try this.

    Just saw Sebastian’s vid yesterday on his favourite gourmands from Xerjoff and this was top of the list. Very glad to hear from Michelyn that it’s nothing too candy-ish. Big fan of chocolate oranges myself. Plus Loatian oud is pretty easy on the nose. Glad that Steven agrees! Loved his emphasis on the evolution and full vanillic base that makes this a standout gourmand. Haven’t tried it yet, but it’s top of the list on my Xerjoffs to sample. MI, USA

    I always been a fan of your video in reviewing perfumes. I am a big fan of chocolate. It’s amazes me one of the smell in Symphonium in your review video is the longevity and the projection. I owned a few Xerjoff and of my favorite is Accento Overdose. I am hoping that Symphonium will have a better smell and effects of the performance.

    I enjoyed Steven’s review because he answered all my questions about the type of chocolate this fragrance smelled like. I dont like bitter chocolate. He described it as a smooth sweet gourmand chocolate and that is exactly what I am looking for.
    Michelyn’s introduction has me convinced I need this in my collection. The description of the chocolate with a orange creamy center wrapped in delectable vanilla sounded incredible.

    I always wanted to buy a fragrance that the main note is chocolate. Steven mentions that in this fragrance, chocolate mixes with Spanish mandarin and is something that intrigues me a lot. If the original was release in 2015 and was relaunched in the 17/17 stone label collection it is because it must be a masterpiece by Xerjoff

    I am generally not a big fan of gourmand fragrances, but Michelyn’s introduction and Steven’s video review has got me very interested in Xerjoff Symphonium. First, Michelyn’s comment that it is gourmand, but not cloying, and Steven mentioning that it is a unique fragrance, one of his top three chocolate perfumes, makes it a good choice. I love oud and the fact that it tones down the gourmand nature of Xerjoff Symphonium is wonderful. I don’t have a favorite chocolate perfume. Maybe Xerjoff Symphonium will become one. Thanks for the excellent introduction Michelyn, and I of course love Steven’s reviews because they describe perfumes so beautifully. I am a Redolessence subscriber and from USA.

Michelyn does a great job too of explaining the fragrance, and to say it’s one of the best chocolate fragrances she has ever smelled says a lot considering her extensive history in the fragrance industry. This immediately helps me wrap my head around the olfactory experience. Steven, thank you for your reflections on Laotian oud. It makes sense that Xerjoff would use this oud, as it must compliment the earthy & classic fudge flavors of Belgian chocolate. The contrast of the bright zesty orange with the rich, lush chocolate provides dynamism “wrapped in the most delectable vanilla,” as Michelyn beautifully writes. By chance, I’ve been looking to find a gourmand fragrance lately! Perhaps Xerjoff’s Symphonium will by my favorite!     I think what I like most about his YouTube review was the way he explained it.. He always goes into great detail about a fragrance as far as notes and the feeling he gets from it from the opening to the drydown. I think what I liked most about MICHELYN’S introduction was 1, the picture, and 2, her input on the fragrances.. I think they shared some of the same descriptions and by putting their explanations together I really get a sense of exactly what to expect from smelling it. This would be great for the upcoming weather.

    What I like about Steven’s review is that he compared the Symphonium with Chocolate Greedy by Montale, because I have it and I love it, so I am pretty sure I would like Symphonium.
    Regarding the Michelyn’s introduction of this article, what I like is when says that nobody wants to smell like a candy bar , and also that she says it has mandarin and orange, chocolate with citric notes sounds really good!!

    I liked the opening where he showed the sray from the atomizer and under the cap. It’s nice to see some of the details of the bottle itself on the review.
    Next, I liked the how the video showed the visual note breakdown with the explanation.
    I love gourmand fragrances and have yet been able to get a bottle of Xerjoff yet, so this would be awesome to have.

    As a gourmand fragrance lover, hearing that Michlyn thinks it’s the best chocolate fragrance has gotten my attention. I just saw this reviewed on someone’s youtube vlog of best gourmands. Hadn’t heard of it until recently. Of course I want to know what Steve thinks. Belgian chocolate is the best (I do have Belgian family roots). Multiple oranges!!! My favorite combo with chocolate is orange. I look forward to his thoughts of top 10 chocolate scents. I own about 5 chocolate scents and am curious if any of mine made the list.     I really love the note on this one, I think this will remind me of my childhood eating orange icing sandwiched by chocolate cookies, it is like oreo but orange fillings.

    I enjoyed Steven’s comment about the fragrance not being linear and how the Orange note fades off a little bit going into the mid. I too enjoy complex and dynamic fragrances. He did a fantastic job reviewing Symphonium.

    In Michelyn’s introduction I liked the mention of not wanting to smell like a candy bar lol. Also I like the mention of oud grounding the fragrance for becoming to gourmand like. I can get down with that.

And if it smells as good as Michelyn describes it, I’m all for it. I appreciate Stevens reviews, probably more than others.     It’s high praise to call this scent one of the best chocolate fragrances on the market–it’s great to hear it from both Michelyn and Steven. This sounds wonderful–I imagine the mandarin and cardamom playing well together. I love a good gourmand that is unisex and versatile, and it sounds like this fits the bill! I love other not overly sweet chocolates like the Cartier Les Heures scent and the chocolate note in Lutens’ Borneo. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

    Steven is simply one of the best fragrance journalists in the entire industry! His reviews are always honest, full with details and very precise. He simply described Symphonium as “one of the best, if not the best chocolate scents on the market”, which certainly says a lot about this perfume.

    I smelled this fragrance at Perfumology in Philadephia and this fragrance is very rich in the gourmand section for the frag heads. I ABSOLUTELY recommend this kind of scent to absolutely anyone.     I love Xerjoff Symphonium. It absolutely smells like a chocolate orange to me. I think it’s perfect for fall and winter, but especially during the holidays. I agree with Michelyn’s comment that it’s not at all cloying and is rather complex. I agree with Steven’s comment that Symphonium is a very photorealistic chocolate fragrance and it is very well blended. I love chocolate fragrances and would love to own a bottle of Symphonium.     I am absolutely in love with orange chocolates and when this fragrance hit the market, I was ecstatic to try it. It did not disappoint! Beautiful gourmand and extremely long-lasting.

    I love the notes mentioned. Citrus, mandarin, woody cardamom, musk, and vanilla with oud from Thailand. That sounds right up my alley. Complex fragrances make it more interesting. Great history with a great presentation makes an excellent fragrance. Xerjoff is hands down high quality. From the words of Steven from Redolessence, Chris Maurice the perfumer created a masterpiece which make me want to try the perfume even more.

    This is a stunning fragrance and Steven’s video knocks it out of the park. He really nailed the drydown – the orange does disappear but you’re left with this intoxicating, creamy chocolate-vanilla with a hint of warming spices. Just stunning and not at all linear – it changes several times throughout the wear! And I agree w/ Steven that the oud isn’t overpowering. This fragrance is unique but approachable.

    Along those lines, I love that Michelyn pointed out that we don’t want to smell like candy bars with our chocolate perfumes. YES! I struggle with chocolate perfumes. Many of them smell like cheap chocolate – tootsie rolls. Others are too “gourmand,” bordering on “edible” and more appropriate for candles or diffusers. But Symphonium is a creamy, slightly spicey, aromatic chocolate scent that is just completely addictive.

    This very specifically reminds me of visiting my brother in the Buffalo, NY area and going to Platter’s chocolate shop. It’s a chocolate shop that specializes in orange chocolate. They have all types of chocolates, candies, and even an ice cream shop where you can get orange-chocolate hot fudge on your ice cream. And the orange chocolate sponge candies are heaven on earth – tangy, creamy, rich, chocolatey – just perfection. Symphonium takes me right back to that shop and those addicting sponge candies. Warm, welcoming, and unique.

    This sounds like a masterpiece! I am a huge chocolate fan and both reviews make me really want to sample this. I love how Michelyn describes the fragrance because, with any gourmand, there is always the risk of the fragrance smelling too much like the food it was inspired by. Sometimes this isn’t a problem, but I for one would like a fragrance reminiscent of a delicious food, that also has its own twist. I really think the mandarin and oud were such a smart way of spinning off the Belgian chocolate into a really creative perfume. As for Steven’s review, I love how he compared it to other well known chocolate fragrances and explained the differences. This actually helped me a lot to visualize the scent. Also, Steven’s description of the evolution of the fragrance was very useful. For Michelyn’s review, it has to be the imagery. I just love how she describes the fragrance.     According to steven, this is a photo realistic chocolate fragrance, unlike other chocolate fragrance that smell like powdered cocoa, this is more like a chocolate bar thats very luscious. I my self am an addict with chocolate, and that I love eating a box in just a sitting. Michelyn said that this fragrance is a gourmand, but not cloying; this is a good thing because I tend to overspray. Chocolate and oranges are one of my favorite combos, especially with chocolate cookie with orange filling, that is my favorite. I bet this fragrance will be one of my favorites, and I hope I can try one for myself! Love from USA!

    I do think Mefisto is timeless , Symphonium could come close, we’ll see. It sounds impressive.
    I’ve sampled a lot of Xerjoff fragrances lately, and Amabile is one of my my latest acquisitions. Now is in my top 2 Xerjoff fragrances, number one still being Mefisto.

I’ve heard a lot about the craftsmanship of Xerjoff so I’m expecting a well-constructed concoction. My favorite chocolate fragrance is one that has a slight cacao vibe…L’instant de Guerlain EDP. I like how Michelyn points out the fact no one wants to smell like a chocolate bar.     Just wow. To start with, how could I not be intrigued by a scent described by both Michelyn and Steven as possible the best chocolate fragrance ever? And the bottle is exquisite. I fell under the spell of real Belgian chocolate on my first visit to Brussels years ago, and the combination of this with Italian and Spanish citrus sounds amazing and as Steven said unique.     Symphonium i think it’s photorealistic gourmand , no doubt made exceptionally well. It’s Xerjoff we’re talking about.
    In my mind I visualize the fragrance truly smells like you’re sitting in some super fancy Italian coffee shop/bakery and you’re enjoying the smell of your chocolate and orange dessert in front of you.
    The Oud i think will Symphonium a nice twist , playing it’s role in the background.
    I love all kinds of fragrances from different genres , and i don’t get the “issue” smelling like a candy bar … at all. Each to his own of course.

    Xerjoff is my absolute hands down favorite house.
    I do own several bottles and I love pretty much all of them.
    I love how Steven described the non linearity of this fragrance from opening to mid, to dry down.
    How it opens with bright Spanish Mandarin and Italian orange that fadeaway into a rich decadent Belgian chocolate (reminded him of a Roche chocolate) with a Gourmand vanilla residing in the base providing an intoxicating sweetness with two iterations of oud to ground it all together.
    Sounds so delectable.

    But I’m so glad I read Michelyns introduction because I’m not the biggest fan of straight up chocolate fragrances (Chocolate Greedy is just not for me), but Michelyn made the statement that no one wants to smell like a candy bar, and I couldn’t agree with her more.
    She mentioned that Symphonium was like a dark chocolate surrounding a creamy orange center wrapped in vanilla….

    Ideally balanced crunchy chocolate toffee , cozy orange , special oud , “most delectable vanilla” , and it’s made by Xerjoff? Not to mention the performance Steven mentioned .
    Symphonium is truly awesome, sophisticated high end gourmand , and I believe I’d feel in good spirits while wearing it.
    My favorite Xerjoff is Lira . It’s quite sweet, some could easily argue that it resembles candy bar , so ….

    I really love chocolate fragrances but they have to smell realistic and I prefer them not to be powdery. My all time favorite chocolate perfume was Chocolovers by Aquolina. And the way Steven describes Symphonium, it sounds like it is in the same category. It has that bright orange citrus opening but has that rich chocolate note that stays throughout the development of the fragrance. I like how he describes the rich vanilla in the base that gives it that sweet finish. It really sounds like a gourmand lovers dream! I currently only own Golden Dallah but would love to add Symposium to my collection.

    I love chocolate fragrances! Michelyn makes a fantastic point about how photorealistic I like my chocolate fragrances. She points out the earthiness in chocolate and I think that some of the facets of chocolate, like earthiness, are what I enjoy about a fragrance with a chocolate note rather than smelling like realistic chocolate bar. I am too much a novice to know the differences between different ouds but Stephen’s description of the smoothness of the Laotion oud sounds lovely (although I do enjoy some barnyard).     To be honest both Steven’s and Michelyn’s description of the Symphonium made me want to own a bottle asap. Steven’s reviews are one of my favourites, he always makes you almost smell the scent from the passionate and detailed way he describes it. Michelyn’s introduction is on point, definitely very helpful in imagining what is going on in this for sure lovely gourmand. I’m just getting into the gourmands lately and I tested my first chocolate scents not so long ago and I must say, so far I enjoyed most of them quite a lot, but I don’t own any yet.     I have a feeling I’m one of the few Cafleurebon readers who actually smelled Symphonium.
    Тhe fragrance was a limited edition , made for Fortnum&Mason , high end department store in London. That’s where I’ve smelled it
    I remember the smell being really sweet , mix of chocolate pot , and Cointreau – famous French Orange Liquor , and ever slightly funky oud in the base. It surprised me that Steven and Michelyn do not perceive the booziness.
    As far as my memory serves me, Symphonium was also powdery.
    I have to revisit it again, no questions asked.
    The best Xerjoff fragrances are Cruz del Sur II , followed by Golden Dallah and then comes my old love Lira. I have a great feeling about Symphonium, let’s see. Premium chocolate fragrances are my favorites.

    I really enjoy fragrances with chocolate/cacao, especially when they are non gourmand.

    It’s so cool to see this note paired with orange, cardamom and oud. It’s really interesting that this has a photorealistic chocolate note, which is nonlinear – that is unusual.

    Michelyn’s introduction was great! Enjoyed reading through it, especially about the role of the oud in this fragrance.

    Nice introduction and review! What I enjoyed about Steven’s YouTube review of Symphonium is the detailed way he goes through all the notes, when they appear and how long they last. I never would have expected a sweet gourmand chocolate fragrance to have oud in the base, let alone two different types of oud, Thai and Laoitian.

    What I enjoyed about Michelyn’s introduction is learning that the fragrance, while gourmand, is not cloying. I really liked what Michelyn said about no one wanting to smell like a chocolate bar as that is my biggest concern with fragrances such as this one. It’s reassuring to learn it is not so!

    I am a fan of chocolate perfumes as long as they are not too sweet. My favorite is Olympic Orchids Cafe V. I live in the US.

    What impresses me the most is different facets set up by the perfumer.
    Symphonium is not one dimensional chocolate
    gourmand, there’s also orange , cardamom , and Laotian Oud . Posh fragrance at its best. I need such fragrance in my collection.
    Fall nights, on a walk with classy lady, going out to a bar , such situations I think will suit Symphonium the best.
    I like a lot of Xerjoff fragrances , my favorites are Casamorati Lira , Opera , Italica and Amabile.
    Symphonium could be my next purchase, I’ll look for samples.

    Who doesn’t like smelling like a candy bar? I get the irony, but still the answer is , very few people I believe. I smell like candy bars all the time , I’m a Pastry Chef after all. Also gourmands is my favorite style in Perfumery, well over 80% of my ever growing collection includes gourmands. I don’t know the exact number, but I have close to 200 ,if not more I believe.
    Steven and Michelyn combined take on Symphonium reminded me of making , and eating Orange Chocolate Cake , with cardamom and slightly candied orange slices on top of it.
    I love eating, smelling, and working with chocolate, I’m eating Toffee Almond Cake at the moment
    My favorite Xerjoff is Italica, also one the best gourmands ever.

    The intro had me at juicy mandarin and Stevens praise about one of the best chocolate scents he’s experienced has my interest peaked. I love chocolate and gourmand fragrances. I’m a sucker for sweet scents and Xerjoff does the gourmand class justice time and time again.

    Come on guys , I’m on a diet….
    Symphonium is fragrance with a character, that has a lot of layers, mandarin, orange, Belgian chocolate, musk and two different oud varieties.
    Top chocolate gourmand . Something to be expected of all Xerjoff gourmands of course.
    What I find interesting, is that Michelyn and Steven opinion is slightly different . Steven called it “One of the most photorealistic chocolate perfumes you’ll ever smelled in your life” and also, rich and full chocolate gourmand, but according to Michelyn it’s not so sweet.
    Naxos and La Capitale are my favorite Xerjoff beauties .

    That remind Steven about Sorriso from Profumo Roma fragrance which I like a lot and I agree with Michelyn that no man want to smell like candy bar, plus if you fix top note of chocolate with orange and cardamom with remind me of Herod a little. I am in CA USA

    steven is by far my favorite fragrance reviewer and the one who’s sold me on a handful of perfumes. his description on this scent has me weak and i’ve been looking to try a chocolate scent for a while! xx
