Montale Oud Tobacco collage: Photos from Sebastian and Pixaby
Tobacco and Oud are boon companions in perfumery. Perhaps the most well known is Tom Ford’s 2013 Private Blend: Tobacco Oud, which is a smoky Middle-Eastern tobacco combined with equally smoky Oud. Montale Oud Tobacco is also reminiscent of the Middle East but that is where the similarities end. Instead of a burnt tobacco, the aroma is more like uncured tobacco leaves and a seldom used ingredient in perfumery-sumac (not poison sumac-the edible kind). Sumac is a spice, from a flowering bush whose berries are crushed and used in Middle-Eastern and Lebanese cuisine. What does it smell like? Sumac has the tang of lemon without the astringency. It is prominent in Montale Oud Tobacco, and while this fragrance shares similar DNA to many Montale Fragrances, it is not what you might expect from the name… and that can be a good thing, as it is here. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
