Maher Olfactive Treachery Review (Shawn Maher) 2020 + Inscrutable Gourmand Draw

Maher Olfactive Treachery by Shawn Maher

The Invention of Life by René Magritte 1929

Lost in the rages of fragrance

Lost in the rags of remorse

Lost in the waves of a sickness

That loosens the high silver nerves

Oh chosen love, Oh frozen love

Oh tangle of matter and ghosts

Oh darling of angels, demons and saints…” ~ The Window by Leonard Cohen

When artisan perfumer and Art and Olfaction 2020 finalist Shawn Maher of Chatillon Lux decided to diverge into a separate line which he named Maher Olfactive, his aim was an art for art’s sake/slow perfume/ release it when he was ready. In an ideal universe, perfumers might only create for the sake of creation itself – but surely everyone needs to eat as well. It’s marvelous to compose beautiful fragrances which will reach a wide audience, but there is a singular pleasure which evolves from formulating a perfume for oneself utilizing your favorite materials heedless of cost. So much the better if others find it compelling. Such is the case with Shawn’s latest endeavor: Treachery.

Maher olfactive Treachery review

Treachery of Images by René Magritte

Treachery is an inscrutable gourmand on myriad levels, and adults only need apply. When Shawn initially set himself about the task of descriptive naming, ‘This is Not a Pipe” sprang to mind: a double entendre referring to surrealist painter René Magritte’s “The Treachery of Images” (1929). The painting depicts a pipe underlined with the phrase Çeci n’est pas une pipe (I’ve been agonizing over shapes; Magritte’s looks closest to the half-bent billiard shape). Unfortunately, Demeter already had a fragrance by that name. The concept of treachery niggled nonetheless, a symbolism which haunted Shawn. What if a dark leathery gourmand was composed of hedonistic indulgences – the sort which, when taken in excess – do little to extend one’s longevity? All the things we adore which make existence delightful and dangerous when exaggerated…moderation be damned. Down the rabbit hole he went and I followed suit.

Best Magritte Paintings

La Corde Sensible” by René Magritte (1960)

In search of sweetness and light? Look elsewhere. Treacle is verboten; these are shadowy delights, more intense and full-bodied. Simply because you see sweet almond listed doesn’t render Treachery sticky with heliotropin or cotton-candy sweet because of vanilla absolute. These are fragrant accents; the vanilla is sufficiently woody and a little dirty besides. Cocoa suggests darkest chocolate, not milk or white (what IS white chocolate, anyway???). If there are berry nuances they serve as piquant, lively flavor zings inferred, not cudgeled. Not truly a pipe tobacco, Shawn takes a gorgeous tobacco absolute, seasons generously with labdanum and burnishes it with saffron for crafty seduction. Oakwood teases us down the Highland malt path (I’m not complaining), with davana contributing her own brand of dried fruit balsamic booziness. Sweet spices gentle the deeper, moodier materials with delicate grace. This lovely willful perfume is as layered as an onion as it unfolds seamlessly in its own serpentine fashion.

Discovery by René Magritte (1927)

Treachery is no lightweight performer; it has astonishing longevity (even through multiple hand washings) and creates a powerful force field surrounding the wearer. I dabbed, and it lasted over 14 hours! It’s certain to be a must go-to for cool climes – but I’m curious to see how it behaves in warm weather. Best to dose accordingly with this potent potion.

Notes: tobacco absolute, labdanum, cocoa, vanilla absolute, davana, whiskey, spices, saffron, berries, sweet almond, oakwood absolute.

Sample provided by the perfumer – many thanks, Shawn!  My nose is my own…

  • I do not have a favorite Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume. Not sweet but still a gourmand intrigues me! One of my favorite perfumes is a cocoa scent so I’m curious about this one. USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love how Ida describes this as serpentine and onion-like in its complexity and development. Sounds absolutely beautiful! I also love that it doesn’t shy away from the sweet notes, but uses them with restraint and nuance. I enjoyed Chatillon Lux’s Rose Santal and find Lamplight Penance one of the most unique, intriguing, and captivating smells! Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US.

  • “His aim was an art for art’s sake/slow perfume/release it when he was ready” — this right here does it for me. I’m not familiar with neither Chatillon Lux, nor Maher Olfactive. I live in Italy.

  • It sounds like Ida was really enjoying delving into this cotton-candy, chocolaty vanilla bomb of a fragrance. To be honest this does sound like a delicious creation I would love to try.

I don’t have a favorite perfume from Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive, but Treachery sounds like it will be my go to gourmand for when the colder months come along.

    I live in the UK.

  • I have always loved Magritte, and I had no idea this fragrance was influenced by his work. I am familiar with Shawn, my favorite of his scents being Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli from Chatillon Lux and Biblio from the Chatillon Lic side project series.

I live in Montana, USA. Thanks!

  • mleenstra says:

So eager to try something from both Chantillon lux and Maher Olifactive. Shawn’s creations seem daring and unique. I love gourmands and this one sounds like what you need on a cold winter evening with speculoos biscuits and a hot cocoa drink or on a trip to the British Library manuscript room 😉 (one of my favourite places) Marit UK

  • This fragrance sounds very appealing because of the tobacco and gourmand notes that create a deep and intense fragrance that isn’t sweet. Ida described it beautifully. I still have to try the fragrances from both lines, so I appreciate the opportunity to win this bottle. I am in the USA.

  • Ida’s review was very informative and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I love the way she described this scent. The sweet notes in this fragrance sounds amazing. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • Wow this sounds like a wonderful journey to Medieval England. Never tried anything from either house. Would love to add this to my collection. Brooklyn NY USA

  • So cool, this sounds like a Magritte made the real. We get shown one thing but what is hidden is a surreal beast full of flavour that lives in the dark woods! And also let in on the trick thats being played. Love when art gets olfactive.
I haven’t heard of Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfumes before but I’m off to check them out now. Thanks!
    I’m in Dublin, Ireland.

  • I absolutely love tobacco fragrances! I liked the description of Treachery, with its Saffron and Cocoa notes. Thanks, Ms Ida, for reminding me to listen to my Leonard Cohen CDs. Mich USA

  • “Moderation be dammed”, upon reading I was relating to Laudano Nero from Tiziana Terenzi, this one is more gourmandish and not being sweet is in my territory of likeness. Again as many times before and being new to this hobby thanks for introducing this and making it available for the draw.

  • This perfume sounds very unique and nice. I very like the review, but I’m not familiar with the brand. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • A dark leathery gourmand with 14 hours of longevity sounds fantastic. The pipe photo also caught my attention. First time hearing about this brand thus do not have a favorite from this line yet. Regards from the USA.

  • Trinity33 says:

Ooh a gourmand for adults! I love vanilla and cocoa notes but most fragrances that feature them seem designed for the tween crowd. I would live go smell a scent that explores the nuances of these gourmand notes. I love the association with Magritte. You know you’re looking at seemingly common ingredients from a different perspective. I do not have a favorite Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive fragrance. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • William Smallwood says:

This sounds amazing! Tobacco scents are awesome, Slumberhouse Jeke is a particular favorite of mine. Tried smoking a pipe for awhile, but gravitated towards cigars! Will check this bad boi out! Oregon, US.

  • A 14-hour gourmand sounds great. The descriptive paragraph above makes this one sound like a must smell. Haven’t tried anything from the houses. US

  • Hashim Madani says:

In today’s world of all too familiar crowd-pleasing fragrances, it’s refreshing to see bold ‘here I am’ fragrance like Treachery. The vanilla and tobacco absolutes Ida describes sound lovely. VA, USA.

  • Anything tobacco is something I would be more than happy to try, and Ida paints a fabulous olfactory portrait of what this fragrance is. Based in Romania

  • What I liked most about ida’s review was the phrase “Treachery is an inscrutable gourmand on myriad levels, and adults only need apply. ”

Gourmands are one of my favourite genres of perfume and this contains so many of my favourite notes and from ida’s review. It seems like it’s composed just how I’d hope it would be.

I’ve not tried anything from either unfortunately.

  • A potent potion, this sounds like right up my alley because it’s a gourmand dosing the sweetness. Haven’t tried any Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume before. So would love to try this one.

Notes of tobacco absolute, labdanum, cocoa, vanilla absolute, davana, whiskey, spices, saffron, berries, sweet almond, oakwood absolute. I am intrigued by the notes and the longevity. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am curious and interested to find out more. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • I have heard of this house, but did not have the chance to sample something yet. Treachery sounds right up my alley with those notes of tobacco and whiskey.
    Thanks!

  • Notes: tobacco absolute, labdanum, cocoa, vanilla absolute, davana, whiskey, spices, saffron, berries, sweet almond, oakwood absolute. I love Gourmands and leathery notes so this seems right up my street. I am really fascinated by the longevity sounds sumptuous. This is a house that I am not familiar with but will try and find out more about. Thanks a lot from the UK

A gourmand that is non sweet and sticky, exploring the darker sides of certain pleasures are the things that appealed to me ;0) I’m not familiar with the perfumes and can alas give no favourite. But maybe this on could become just that? Living in Belgium.

  • Christos GX says:

What i enjoed most was the incredible desription,it was like i evisioned the art and the conception of the creation from the artists point of view.I have not tried any perfume from them, but based on the review,i want to start trying more.

  • besar_bears says:

I’m enthralled by Ida’s description of the development and the longevity as well. Hope that I get drawn for this so I can test how Treachery develops in Singapore’s heat and humidity where I live. I’ve yet to try any fragrance by Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive yet.

  • patrick_348 says:

I loved the review and its taking up of the parallels between Magritte and Treachery. (I will even forgive the mixed metaphor of “as layered as an onion as it unfolds seamlessly in its own serpentine fashion.” ) Ida describes the different notes and how they operate so precisely that she makes me want badly to sample Treachery. Her words demonstrate how Maher has been innovative and imaginative, which makes me want to experience other scents he has created (which I have never done). I am in the US, in NC.

  • From the review this is not a shy perfume, it has a strong character. it’s so nice to be spoiled by the reassuring notes of tobacco. Then cocoa, almond, vanilla … definitely a sensual performance.

  • Very excited to smell this one. I love deep and “protecting” scents, which tell a story and transform yourself while wearing it. This seems to be one. I live in Germany.
    Greetings

  • What a wonderful, clever concoction. Playing with meanings, images and promises, creating the expectation of treachery, therefore being treacherous in trying to be treacherous and subsequently offering what seems to be a wonderfully real, honest result judging by Ida’s words.
This “rough” gourmand with tobacco, woody and balsamic touches and a titanic performance is definitely something I would love to experience. It would also be my first Chatillon Lux/ Shawn Maher experience. I am in the EU. Thanks for this draw!

  • lightgray says:

oh! i love shawn and i love the way this sounds — moody gourmands with tasty touch, yes please. my favorite from chatillon lux is gratiot league square (i love it on my boyfriend and when i wear it too) – and i’m in california!

  • Thank you Ida for the great review and Shawn Maher for the kind giveaway. I’d love to join you down this wonderful rabbit hole and peel the onion one layer at a time. You do have a way with words and Treachery sounds delightfully sinful :). I’ve not yet tried any Chatillon Lux of Maher Olfactive perfumes yet. m in USA

  • Jake Dauod says:

I don’t have a favorite Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive Perfume as I have not tried anything from either brand. For this perfume, the thing that intrigued me the most is that it is a gourmand and the fact that’s it’s performance is fantastic. I live in the Midwest and our winters are brutal so I always pull for beastly performers. As for the juice, a combination of tobacco absolute, cocoa, vanilla, almond, woods, berries, and spices. It truly sounds to die for. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • isaaclopedia says:

Ida’s review makes it seem like this fragrance should be worn by the most interesting man in the world. I’m not sure I can live up to that, but with the references to Magritte, I have to try it! I love gourmands, almond and saffron. I’d never heard of this perfumer before, but after looking at their website I am very interested in their crystal moon fragrance. I’m in California, USA.

  • This is a great review Ida. The heaviness of the juice shows through the bottle. Dark, mysterious, hidden, layered, strong as if covering something, being lost or if you aren’t you definitely will get lost! Treachery around every corner. I love heavy perfumes and would really like to try this! Out of the ordinary is my middle name! Please send a bottle to me in Belgium.

  • I have yet to smell my first Maher piece, and I’d love it to be Treachery. It has my name over it, I recently smelled an amazing new Whisky perfume and am curious how these compare. I’d love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • The whole fragrance concoction sounds just beautiful with richness. As Ida describes the booziness and spices it just makes me almost drool. I appreciate her explaining that some of the notes are just accents. Many people do think full on notes when most of the time they are there to harmonize a fragrance. Treachery simply sounds astounding. Thanks Ida for review. I have not tried this house before. In the USA.

  • I have never tried any of Shawn Maher’s fragrance, but I MUST! Treachery, from Ida’s words “This lovely willful perfume is as layered as an onion as it unfolds seamlessly in its own serpentine fashion.” Her descriptions are so beautifully written. With notes like tobacco absolute, vanilla, whiskey, I know I will love this. USA

  • Haven’t tried a Shawn Maher perfume, yet. But from the knowledge I am getting from these reviews on Cafleurebon, I am getting more and more intrigued by the unique manner in which Shawn creates his perfumes – attention to land, history, pursuit of perfection and pursuit of the art of perfumery for art’s sake. Treachery seems to be a deep fragrance with wonderful notes. Thanks Ida for the review. Writing from the USA.

  • Everything about Ida’s description of Treachery – the dirtiness of the vanilla, the darkness of the cocoa (white chocolate is a fever dream of those who prefer to ignore bitterness), the Highland malts – makes this scent sound perfect. I have never tried Shawn Maher’s scents, but this review and the description of the other scents in his Maher Olfactory catalogue convinced me to order a sample set. Thank you for connecting these dots for me!

  • lilacdays says:

This brand has been on my radar for a while but unfortunately, I haven’t tried yet any of Shawn’s highly praised creations. I enjoyed reading this wonderful piece from Ida mostly the description of the notes.
    Many thanks for this draw.

  • I have never smelled a creation from Chatillon Lux or Maher, but the listed notes are among my favorites, and Ida’s description is so vivid. The most intriguing thing in a perfume is to develop through time, and not stay flat from the initial spray to the drydown. I want to experience this olfactory journey. Regards from Athens-Greece.

  • Sadly haven’t smelled so far either Chatillon Lux nor Maher perfumes. In the review i loved the Magritte references and the description of all the layers of this perfume

    Living in Germany, EU

  • I haven’t tried a Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume before but Ida’s review is very intriguing especially about the darkness and lack of sweetness in a gourmand! I’m in the UK

  • I like the sound of “astonishing longevity”, especially for such a mouthwatering scent. Tobacco and gourmand fragrances are among my 2 favourite kinds of aromas, next to green vetivers, and with that extra touch of fruity booziness, Treachery comes awfully close to what I might deem a perfect scent. Especially since the progression is noticeable. Excellent review. Canada.

  • I’m afraid I’ve yet to try a Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume, but I’m eager to try. Ida’s rapt description of the ways in which the perfume provides an unexpected twist on decadence and its pitfalls spoke to me: vanilla, not cloying but woody; fruit contributing balsamic booziness, not the expected simple sweetness. I’m in the USA––thank you for the draw.

  • Monica Beaton says:

The oh so delicious words of Ida’s review, Leonards lyrics, and the promise of a deep dark edible scent. Everything I love wrapped up on a page that I had to read several times. These are exciting times for new and independent fragrance artists and I for one intend to work my way through each and every bottle. Delicious, so delicious Ida and Michelyn. 2020 promises to be an intriguing year. I live in Australia.

  • I love tobacco laced fragrances. I have been searching for the “one”. I have yet to find it. This sounds interesting, especially the performance and longevity. Thanks for the draw! US.

  • 1. Starting with L. Cohen, an artist I so much wanted to watch perform and didn’t had the chance
    2. Dark you say? Bring it on! I am watching Harry Potter right now! Coincidence? I think not!
    3. White chocolate is a fraud :-))
Never had the chance to smell his perfumes.
    I live in EU.

  • I’m not going to lie, I would like to meet this performance beast :). But Ida had me at tobacco.
Not familiar with Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive, unfortunately.

I liked Ida’s descriptiveness of this fragrance: “Simply because you see sweet almond listed doesn’t render Treachery sticky with heliotropin or cotton-candy sweet because of vanilla absolute. Oakwood teases us down the Highland malt path (I’m not complaining), with davana contributing her own brand of dried fruit balsamic booziness. Sweet spices gentle the deeper, moodier materials with delicate grace.” I love wintry frags, but like Ida, I would like to see how this fares in warm weather.

I do not have a favorite Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfume, as I haven’t experienced any of the scents. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Dark leathery gourmand with tobacco, Highland malt and dried fruit balsamic booziness sounds very tempting. BeautifuI and intriguing notes. I like the idea of making a perfume for the sake of creation itself, only for oneself utilizing favorite materials needless of cost. Works created from the sincere need of the heart are the best. Would love to follow Shawn and Ida down the rabbit hole. I live in the EU and didn’t have the opportunity to know Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfumes yet.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Ok I love all of these things in life so this has to be an amazing fragrance. I adore gourmands but don’t think I’ve experienced the combo of tobacco and chocolate and omg what a combo! Also that bottle is gorgeous! I definitely must try this one and I’ve yet to experience any of Chantillon Lux’s creations. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Camille Sheil says:

I do not have a favorite of Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive. They are both new to me. I like the entire context of Maher Olfactive! Art for arts sake…when the fancy strikes. No matter how much must eat, genuine masterpieces are either not discovered until later or aren’t considered good enough to feed the family….until the family is gone.

I love the strength of this fragrance! Wow. A beautiful deep fragrance. I would love to sample this, as I know that tobacco can be quite different…some can seem even cool. I love the notes of saffron, whiskey, and davana especially. Treachery indeed!

Thank you for this opportunity! I live in New Hampshire USA!

  • I haven’t got the chance to try Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive fragrances. This sounds very rich and will be great for cool days and nights. Ida really enjoys this one. I’d like the chance to check it out. Thanks, Ca

  • Ida describes Treachery as …”an inscrutable gourmand on myriad levels, and adults only need apply…” As layered as an onion as it unfolds seamlessly in its own serpentine fashion. I would love to try this perfume and discover all these wonderful layers to it.
I do not have a favorite Chantillon Luxo or Maher Olfactive perfume.
    I live in USA.

  • First of all, thanks for the Magritte images. Treachery is such a good name for a perfume — and it sounds like the juice lives up to the name… I hope to try it.
    Thanks! From the USA

  • This sounds like a dream for fall/winter or maybe even just a day off with the A/C on! On to the sample list it goes! Love the list of notes, thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I love how Ida described this perfume as “willful.” The unfolding path of Treachery is something I’d like to experience. I like some hedonistic extravagances every once in a while. Such treats are definitely needed to make life delightful. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Shawn Maher.
    I live in the USA.

  • Steliyan Syarov says:

A 14-hour longevity. Incredible! I bet you could take a bath and the smell will still be there. Love your comparision to onions – a rich well crafted complex parfume. I wonder how vanilla and cocao are mixed in this one.
Thanks for the giveaway! Greetings from Austria, EU!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the extensive review Ida. I love Shawn’s work and I’m really excited for this one.

It reminds me a lot of Lamplight Penance, with it’s nuances of berries, florals and oil and smoke – layered like an onion.

I’ve enjoyed pretty much every fragrance that Shawn has put out, with my favorites being Lamplight Penance, Admiral , La Foret de Liguest and Omnostre.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • I really enjoyed reading Ida’s review of this up and coming fragrance by Maher Olfactive. It seems to me that Shawn is really trying to capture the existential, even metaphysical depths of Magritte’s paintings in perfume form. Just like the paintings, the perfume ingredients seem quite simple and straightforward, but per Ida’s description of Treachery unfolding like layers of an onion, it soon becomes apparent that there is more here than meets the eye, er nose, I mean. I’ve only tried Nefertiti and Weinstrasse from Chatillon Lux, which are both multifaceted and delightful. I’ve also been extremely interested in Crystal Moon. Can’t wait to see what else the creative mind of Shawn Maher comes up with. Thanks so much for the chance to win a bottle of Treachery! I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Ida, a great review of Maher Olfactive Treachery. Ida brilliantly describes this as having gourmandish qualities from the note breakdown of sweet almond, cacao, vanilla, whiskey and tobacco absolute but the sweetness in the vanilla, cacao, and almond is toned down and more masculine qualities are brought out from the tobacco, whiskey, saffron, and labdanum. I love boozy, tobacco, and gourmand fragrances so this sounds perfect to me. My favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance is Admiral which is a very unique twist on an aquatic fragrance. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • immortano26 says:

I have my own bottle of Admiral and its astonishing, because it’s totally different that most fragrances that i used to wear. As for the review i have one word to say – oldschool – and this word is how i would describe myself, my fashion style, scents and way of life. When i have read about its acents i fell in love with it immediately. If i don’t win it i will definately buy it. I live on Poland, EU

  • Matt Schinabeck says:

I love Shawn’s work. My favorite summer scent is 88 Chestnut St and one of my go to winter scents is his Gratiot League Square.

I am very intrigued by his new scent Treachery. I love a good Tobacco scent especially for the long Cleveland winters.

  • Whoa, this sounds like a beast!! I love that it has sweet almond in the drydown. Not many fragrances have that note and it is one of my favorites.
I’ve not tried any Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive perfumes so this would be my first.
    I live in the USA.

Ida Meister take on Treachery reminded me of Chocolate whiskey cake with raspberries I absolutely love, but do on special occasions, or for take out only. Being a Pastry Chef in the state I’m in , making alcohol infused cakes and desserts is a bit of a Grey area. I can’t sell some great desserts, because I need to be licensed for selling alcohol, which is beyond absurd.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I honestly have not heard about this fragrance house, but it definitely sounds interesting. I love the seductive and sensual sound of this scent. It sounds like something that would be wonderful in the winter months!

I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

I like semi gourmands that are more complex, different, and changing, and not too juvenile.
Treachery fits the bill perfectly with it’s dark chocolate, tobacco and almond combination . I would be really happy to win a bottle.
Very soon I’ll be able to return to my routine of back and forth between USA and EU/UK, 1 week in US-> one week in EU/UK , and so on …
For now I’m in VA only

  • Interesting as I don’t think I’ve heard of a gourmand tobacco before. This sounds like something I’d really like. I’ve not tried anything from either house before but this sounds great! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • WaltherP99 says:

Always been a teetotaler, I don’t drink and smoke , but I really like boozy and tobacco fragrances. Judging by how picky Ida is , and her speaking so highly of Treachery, I’m almost certain I’ll enjoy it.
Maher Olfactive I don’t know, but Chatillon Lux I do , Weinstrasse is in my possession.

  • Treachery? Such an unusual name for such a complex scent. All the notes in it are appealing to me, it’s deep and full, so I expect fireworks. Good performance is always a plus.
    Thanks for the draw
