Map of The Heart Black Heart v2 + Valentine’s Day Draw 3

Map of the Heart Black Heart review

Map of The Heart Black Heart V.2 collage by Michelyn (images from Map of the Heart and lyrics from the song “smoke gets in your eyes” and licorice vines via pixaby)

I first met Map of the Heart Founders and Creative Directors Sarah Blair and Jeffrey Darling at Esxence in 2015. In 2014, the Australian film producers, writers and designers focused their talents and artistic vision on perfume.  In collaboration with a dream team:  Givaudan master perfumer Jacques Huclier (the nose behind many of MUGLER fragrances including A*Men in 1996, and the top notch flankers including A*Men Pure Havane) and the renowned Perfumed Plume award winning flacon designer Pierre Dinand (YSL Opium among many others) they created a series that navigates a fragrant topography of human emotions, textures and feelings. Map of The Heart Black Heart V.2 is the second in the series and although the brand is not new it might be to some of our readers and viewers (we have written about The Art ad Olfaction Finalist Pink Heart V.6 and U.K. Fragrance Foundation award winning White Heart V.7 and Sebastian recently did a video on Red Heart).

CaFleureBon Editor Sebastian Jara chose Map of the Heart v2 Black Heart for his Valentine’s Day video.  Unlike the name might suggest this heart is not dark nor ominous, but it is smoky… more of a sweet smoke than a dark foreboding smoky fragrance. Map of the Heart v2 Black Heart is difficult to pin down, just like love. With its notes of cinnamon, Brazilian orange, sandalwood and eucalyptus they combine in a unique way… the aroma of black vines licorice gives Black Heart a slightly gourmand vibe.

  • The whole concept is great: the black heart, the sweetness, the woods and the smoke. It does make for a unique package and if it’s unique for Sebastian, with his collection, I would love to get my paws on it. Great review as always. Thanks for the giveaway! From Romania, EU

  • Smoke with sweetness would be interesting. I had seen Sebastian best Smoke frag video and I have already started tracking a few online to sample. Love the smokey fragrance and this one with the sweetness would be more socially wearable I believe. An avid reader from Los Angeles, CA USA

  • I love the shape of the bottle, and the way he describes it as a “gourmand smoke” is really intriguing. I’d love to give this fragrance a try.

  • I’ve never tried anything from this house but i do like the concept of the bottle, especially this dark one, awesome. It would fit really nice in any fragrance enthusiast collection. Great video from Sebastian as always, thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • Awesome! Sebastian is one of my favorite reviewers, I find he has a great take on fragrances and find his opinions trustworthy. I love the bottle, design and notes in this fragrance. The licorice sounds great. From Canada!

  • The spice notes of Black Pepper, Cardamom and Cinnamon are some of my favorites and when added with the smoky and rubbery element mentioned in the video makes it even more interesting, very unusual.
Smelling Great Fragrances has been my favourite You tube fragrance channel for some time-always a great presentation.

  • Excellent review by Sebastian. Was not so sure about the Black Heart name, but then Sebastian’s description of it as a sweet, cozy, comforting perfume and Michelyn Caman describing its smoke as “more of a sweet smoke than a dark foreboding smoky fragrance. Map of the Heart v2 Black Heart is difficult to pin down, just like love” brightened my heart 🙂

I am thinking of this perfume as representing a black heart, black as it has been burnt (rejected, dumped, broken) many times. But, like a great shaman who is usually a “wounded healer”, this black heart has a very deep sweetness to it, and is empathetic and kind, just like the heart of one with true love. Similar to a wounded shaman who has healed, so knows how to truly heal, the Black Heart rises like a Phoenix out of burning ashes to spread true, sweet love. A perfect Valentine Day gift, if thought of in this way.

I have never tried Black Heart volume 2 or any other perfume from Map of the Heart, so I am excited to be participating in this drawing (thank you for introducing so many new perfumes and brands). I am from USA.

  • I liked that Sebastian went all out and dressed the part…black shirt and hat to match the black heart bottle. Good review as always!

  • Black Heart now could carry symbolism of the Australian black summer swept away by bushfires. Heart of the eucalyptus forests beating under the ashes.

  • If it’s woody, smokey and spicy I would definitely like it. That eucalyptus note sounds like it makes it cozy. I also like the liquorice vibe. Thanks for another fabulous giveaway! Mich USA

  • Sebastian says Map of The Heart Black Heart v2 is a smoky creation which does suit the black bottle. It also has creamy elements, thanks to a note like sandalwood. I am in US.

  • I’m in love with the note of liquorice and this fragrance seems like something I would enjoy. My favorite thing about the video was when Sebastian described black heart v2 as “cozy and comforting” and that’s the types of scents I currently looking for 🙂 New York, USA

  • Sebastian`s review was great as always. The big dose of eucalyptus with sweetness and smoke sounds intriguing. Don’t think I have smelled anything like it from the description.

    Im from Vancouver, Canada

  • Sebastian describes this as ultra smokey but a different kind of smoke. I love smokey fragrances so this appeals to me. I’m also intrigued by the leather/rubber note Sebastian describes. The bottle is also really cool looking. FL, USA.

  • I love cozy scents and this one sounds fabulous, with smoky notes combined with a sweet undertone that makes it inviting. Eucalyptus is actually not a note that I adore but am hoping this will be the one that changes my mind given the description of it being slightly gourmandish. Thanks for the draw. Regards from the USA.

  • Obviously, this is something that Sebastian really likes. I love the idea of a sweetened smoke. I wish I could have heard more about the eucalyptus and its effects. Thank you for a most enjoyable review and a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Woody, spicy, smoky – cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, and the black licorice — wow, I love licorice! All of my favorite perfume notes. What I like about Sebastian’s video is how he describes the perfume as a cozy, inviting scent and the spicy heart of the composition, and dry down with the smoky-wood accord. Thanks ÇaFleureBon, and Sebastian, I hope to win this draw. Thanks, and Happy Valentines Day to you all. 🙂 JLW27

  • I enjoyed the description of the fragrance as a smoky, sweet, and cozy fragrance sounds fascinating. It seems well suited for cold nights.

  • Oooh! I have a discontinued Tunisian fragrance that features eucalyptus and I love it. That note was definitely what grabbed me in the review, but bergamot, cardamom/cinnamon for me are always winners as well. This sounds like a more unusual smoky perfume I could really get behind, and what a gorgeous bottle to boot. Would love to be entered for the draw. Thanks for the review Sebastian!

  • Sebastian’s description of the smoky accord intrigues me, especially when mixed with a spicy cardamom. I’d love to win this elegant fragrance. Thanks!

  • A smoky, cozy, and sweet fragrance…never had anything like this. Sounds like a good date and night out fragrance.
Love Sebastian’s take in this; glad it’s not your typical smoky kinda fragrance. The gourmand aspect makes this sweet, dark, and sexy. Definitely one I want to have.

  • Being an Australian I was surprised when Sebastian mentioned the use of eucalyptus and Australian sandalwood. Perfumes seem to be made with Middle Eastern or European ingredients (in general) so it is kinda cool that there is an Australian slant on this perfume. So, Black Heart V.2 seems very interesting to me and I would like to own an ‘Australian influenced’ perfume.

  • Bruno Gino Giambroni says:

I haven’t heard of this fragrance house before unfortunately but Sebastian really painted a beautiful picture of this fragrance! I love smoky fragrances and this seems like it would slot perfectly into my cool weather fragrances. I’m in USA.

  • Never heard of this fragrance or the house before but Sebastian really got me interested. He mentioned it was a smoky yet inviting scent and that is something that I’ve always been longing for. I would love to get my hands on a bottle!

  • As always, I love to find out about new fragrances and Sebastian’s channel is a great source. He did not disappoint with this one and made curious about this scent. Greeting from Romania!

  • I did enjoyed the way he can tell you a little bit of the story behind the fragrance and what would you possibly get of this slight sweet smokey smell, and as the bottle goes I believe its a piece of art ! the name black hart v.2 is something intriguing I could spect something dark and heavy or someone that can give you the feeling of a magnetic aura but has cold strong emotional heart .

  • Great review from Sebastian as always. From the review it sounds as sweet and gooey smoke, perhaps like a vein blood, which may explains a lot. Would be great to smell it! 🙂

  • Sebastian, with all do respect, I usually listen your reviews and afterwards I judge a perfume, but this time…oh, this time, that bottle…it was instant Chemistry! If I would have this, it would be Valentine’s day every day! Valentina from Romania

  • A smoky and sweet perfume, featuring eucalyptus notes – now that sounds very unique to me. Love to try it. Ana, Romania, EU

  • Never heard of this house or of their creation but as they say “is never too late to learn” 🙂
Smoky, dark, woody, spicy sounds to me very intriguing.

    Hello from Bucharest, Romania (EU).
Again Sebastian done a wonderful review. The way he made the transition from his review about smoky fragrances to this particular scent and how he describe the smoky vibe with sweet, gourmand and liquerish undertones, the connections to understand better the fragrance made his video more interesting.
    Great job!
    All the best!

  • Lefteris Fotopoulos says:

Great looking bottle. And from Sebastian’s description as Smoky, cozy, gourmand, I would love to try this one. From Greece, EU.

  • The notes sound wonderful! Cinnamon, black licorice and eucalyptus! Something strange that you don’t get to sniff everyday.
    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • I really like his way of describing how it feels when wearing it. Good to hear, that it’s an inviting scent, im a bit afraid of smoke in fragrances.
    I’m fro. Hungary, Eu

  • I totally agree with Sebastian: this is a smoky-sweet fragrance that has a rubbery smell and although is kind of weird perfume, is weird in a good way, it intrigues you and draws you into this fascinating smell that leaves you kind of puzzled: do I love it or do I reject it? Still to this day I haven’t figure it out either I love it or not, but it lingers in my memory as one of the most interesting perfumes I have put my nose on. Is that type of fragrance that you know you want it in your collection because it’s weird 🙂 I`m in EU, Romania.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I liked about Sebastian’s review, is that he pointed out that, eventhough Black Heart is ultra-smoky, the sweet nuances of cinnamon and cardamom along with the licorice aroma make it a pleasant experience. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Wow, I’ve seen this one on fragrantica but never “in the wild”. Sebastian is always great at giving detailed but succinct reviews, even when the scent is as weird as this one!

  • Sebastian really conveyed the theme of the fragrance very well and sparked my curiosity on how the licorice(that I really love) pairs up with the smokey notes. Loved his review. I am from Germany.

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s passion when describing fragrance! The fact this is a sweet and smoky fragrance instead of it being dark and smoky is so appealing! I’m from PA in the USA.

  • Nice job Pierre Dinand – nice job. In 2020 fragrance world presentation is important , and no doubt Map of Heart bottles are unique.
Lots of smoke with sweet undertone . I’m sold .
If White Heart v. 2 on my skin smells like Sebastian description , and the performance is good-i’ll get it. Performance is important to me , if i have to pay niche prices.
    Thanks for the generosity .
Back and forth between USA and Scotland. 1 week in USA -> 1 week in Scotland , and so on.Basically both USA and EU/UK at the same time.

  • The name of the fragrance and house is so cheesy lol. Its interesting though, and to have Sebastian say its unique in his collection makes me want to try it! USA

  • Sebastian is one of the best in the biz. I take his recommendations to heart. And everything about this perfume seems fabulous and perfect for me. I am in the US

  • Bryce Groves says:

I always enjoy how in depth Sebastian always gets. And how he compares the notes to familiar scents.

  • I loved Sebastian’s description of this being a woody, spicy, balsamic, and smoky fragrance yet warm and sweet. It sounds so cozy! But I must admit, it is a very strange bottle!
    I live in the US.

  • I loooove smokey with sweet undertones or vice versa. I feel they balance each other out. Sebastian’s review is excellent in the sense it allowed people who did not smell the perfume to feel it.
    NJ/USA

  • Sebastian describes fragrances is very interesting ways. I’m very intrigued by this smoky and stretchy black licorice fragrance. New Jersey, USA.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always enjoyable for their description, content and in this case for introducing me to a new fragrance house. The bottle is beautiful, and the fragrance sounds inviting. USA

  • I like Sebastian reviews!!!
Smoky, with sweetness by cinnamon and licorice- sounds very beautiful. Nice bottle.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love these bottles so much! And the juice inside sounds awesome! I love smokey gourmand-y fragrances but all of those in that category I’ve tried have been vanilla based. I’m having a hard time imagining what all of these notes would smell like together. I tend to differ with Sebastian as I find smoke to be a warm, comforting scent but that’s probably attributed to memories I have. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Sebastian, great review of Map of the Heart Volume 2. This fragrance sounds very unique being a smoke fragrance with a sweet and pleasant appeal to it. A dominant opening of Eucalyptus sounds really nice transitioning to a sweet and seductive heart of cardamom and cinnamon blending with the smoky woods. It sounds truly amazing and would definitely appeal to me. I am familiar with Map of Heart Volume 3 and watched your review on that fragrance as well. Thank you as always for your honest and in-depth reviews. I am a subscriber from the USA.

  • True smoke and comforting tones. Cozy and gourmand is a beautiful part and smoke too. I loved how Sebastian describes the fragrance. You almost can smell it before you do. USA

  • Heart shaped bottle is unique , and good looking at the same time. I do like good looking bottles , BUT what’s inside is way more important to me. As we all know there are a lot of fragrance brands with unique bottles and high prices, but cheap synthetic smells.
Pretty sure White Heart v.2 will deliver – Sebastian review is top notch.
V.2 description reminded me of me eating Dark chocolate licorice loaf cake , and drinking cardamom tea.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Smoky, sweet…sounds very intriguing and a must have. Appreciate Sebastian’s scent profile of this one. I do remember his review of V.3 but have never personally gotten my nose on anything from this house. Thanks for the opportunity.

I love how sebastian spoke of how intense and even brooding this fragrance was ! I love how this fragrance brings about a sense of self awareness and made me even think of the heart that is inside me ! I have confidence that this is a amazing creation, since both pure havanne and black opium are highly regarded and highly sought after fragrances ! I love cinnamon, orange and sandalwood and liquirice can be very exiting ! USA resident and thank you for introducing these exclusive and exiting fragrances to us !

  • Mike Rybarczyk says:

All these niche fragrances sound so interesting. I’m a fan of smokey scents especially when they’re sweetened up. The leather and black licorice vibe could be a great mix as well. And that bottle is cool looking, would look great on display. Very curious about this one. Nice review.

    New York USA

  • I liked that Sebastian said the fragrance is smokey but sweet and actually comforting. It sounds completely different to anything I’ve tried and also really intriguing. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Interested in trying this unique smoky fragrance. Usually I find them less wearable and harder to pull off but I would definitely be open to try this. NY, USA

  • I enjoyed the description of the fragrance as a smoky, sweet, and cozy fragrance sounds fascinating. It seems well suited for cold nights. Forgot to mention I am in the USA in previous version.

  • I like smoky scents and the mysterious image of the perfume is very interesting. I like Sebastian because he is so in-depth and in the know with fragrances. I’m from Texas.

  • A sweet smokey scent with elements of licorice, eucalyptus and orange sounds just as intriguing, as it sounds unique. Sebastian once again managed to describe it both detailed and objective. I would love to get my nose on this. I am in the EU.

  • Thanks for another great review, Sebastian! I’ve seen this house before but I never really paid attention so thanks for bringing this to the limelight. A smokey gourmand scent – sounds delightful! Thanks for this draw. – CA, USA

  • I love it when Sebastian reviews a perfume he genuinely likes. As he describes dark, smoke, sweetness and licorice you can pick up a sense if his true olfactory experience. I think he liked this and I am interested in map of heart – would like to try it too.

  • I am new to smokey fragrances, so maybe this one which is smokey enough, but not overwhelming, as Sebastian described it, could be a good introduction. Thanks, from the EU.

  • I have the same chilling unviting feeling fron smoky fragrances, so Sebastian saying that this one is cozy and comforting really got my attention. I would really lovevto try it, but I haven’t seen this brand in Romania, EU, where I live. Thank you so much, it seems to be a great and out of the box Valentine’s Day perfume.

  • Sounds good with the warm cozy feeling fragrance. Then it settling into the smoky woody dry down. Watched the red heart video and entered that draw. I also own a full bottle of the A*Men Pure Havane and love it. USA

  • These bottles are so fascinating. Black Heart sounds wonderful from the base of Sebastian’s review. The notes are interesting too. And I have to mention again the bottle, is fabulous. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • The bottles from this house I’m a sucker for I’d love to have one in every color gorge!! Sadly I have no retailers near me to experience these beauties. The notes are all loves minus black licorice vines vibe but as Sebastian noted it’s a sweet smoky lots of eucalyptus must try. Thanks Sebastian and map of hearts. USA

  • Thanks Sebastian for another great review!
I remember I tested only Red heart and I liked it, although find it similiar to Rodriguez for Her, but still beautiful.
The licorice, cinnamon and sandal with smoky notes- sounds great and masculine.
    USA

  • This sounds absolutely amazing! I love all the notes listed, and don’t currently have any perfumes that have eucalyptus as a main player! The spicy/sweet smoke sounds incredibly appealing to me, but so does the rubbery/leathery black licorice aspect! Two of my favorite perfumes are Bvlgari Black and Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin, so this honestly sounds like the perfect perfume for me, and I would love to win a bottle! I am in the US 🙂

  • If someone read my mind to devise the perfect fragrance for me it would likely sound something like this. Everything about this appeals to me. I’m still riding my Valentine’s birthday high, trying to NOT run out and get the chocolate (on sale) that no one gave me – hoping for some luck of the draw here. Sebastian is a reviewer whose tastes I trust and his straightforward delivery appeals. His key words: “cosy, smokey, lico-RISHy” are deal-makers. His invoking the stretchiness of Black Vines tickled me and I DO love the smell and taste of black licorice. NYC/NY/USA and as always appreciative of the opportunity to get my nose on something delightful!

  • The eucalyptus and black licorice notes interested me the most. I love the way Sebastian described it as a “gourmand smoke”.

You guys have an amazing reviewer at hand. Sebastian is truly a gem. A smoky yet sweet cologne is one I can only dream of. A dream come true hopefully. Sebastian’s review was top notch per usual.

  • Very thorough review and and I got to discover a fragrance that I’ve never heard of, but it sound great and the bottle is amazing.

  • I don’t know why, but my curiosity peaks when I hear about smoke. Although not crazy about gourmand scents, Sebastian made me curious about this one – I’m always more curious about the scents he reviews – it’s like I’m thinking we’ll, he knows his stuff :).
    Living in Europe.

  • I’ve never heard of this house before but Sebastians review is well rounded, giving the notes, describing the scent, and even commenting on the unique bottle shape. I also like how he differentiates between “cool” smoky fragrances and this one that he describes as “warm” and “cozy”. I think that comparison helped me understand and “visualize” the fragrance better than just knowing the notes.

  • Great review by Sebastian and I am completely intrigued by this brand with their hearts! Sebastian said that this is smoky, sweat, woody, and has eucalyptus which really boosted my interest. I absolutely love the bottle. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Map of the Heart giveaway? Really nice .
I do have the pleasure of having one and 1/2 , and smelled all Map Of The Heart fragrances.
Purple Heart V 5 I have split with my sister in law, and White Heart V 7 90ml bottle I’m happy to own.
I only wonder why Map Of The Heart fragrances are available all over EU , but not back home. I have seen them in Germany and Spain. Local boutique in Barcelona , is where I bought the two I have mentioned .
V 2 is exactly what Sebastian said , without the licorice, at least I don’t sense it.
    Top opportunity , thanks
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • That is one gorgeous bottle design and it conjures up a pulsing heart perfectly. Thank you Sebastian for the review and Map of the Heart Fragrances for the giveaway. I’d love to smell a smoky fragrance that incorporates eucalyptus and sandalwood. I’m in USA

  • Oh, this line has always been fascinating to me due to the eye-popping packaging, but I haven’t got to try any of the scents!
I can relate to what Sebastian said about the cold sensation of truly smokey fragrances. As long as I know smoke in perfumery, I get it from incense and agarwood perfumes, and sometimes it gives me chills, it wafts of cool church domes or metal razors. That’s why I am pretty intrigued by the smokey, but warm and welcoming words about Black Heart V.2!
Thanks for the chance! I am in Bulgaria, EU.

  • Before sharing my thoughts about Red Heart v. 2 , and Sebastian review , i have to say bottle design is astonishing . One of the best looking bottles i have ever seen.
Smoke , right amount of sweetness , sandalwood . Sounds really good and cozy.

Thank you Sebastian for the review, and Map of Heart for the opportunity . USA

  • Really interested in the idea of a smokey gourmand. I’m a pretty big of licorice notes, so this sounds great. Also, I noticed that there is no other fragrance that was mentioned as a point of comparison. Sounds like a true original!

  • Gail Gross review of Map of the Heart White Heart v.7 , a few months back was the first time I’ve heard the name of the brand.
Back then Gail description of v.7 reminded me of homemade plum jam my grandma is making each year. Thanks why I bought it , but it was not an easy task . A friend of mine brought it from Europe.
Maybe I’m thinking about grandma a lot, or just Map of the Heart v.2 I feel connected with, but again I’m thinking about grandma’s home made
liquorice candies, sorry I grew up in UK liquorice is British, is the States it’s spelled licorice . Such a nice draw, thanks.

  • I always enjoy how sincere and passionate Sebastian is whenever he reviews any fragrant. He explains everything especially his opinion about the notes in details. This bottle is gorgeous.
    I live in USA.

  • I was introduced to Map of Heart , and particularly v. 7 through UK based blog , and the author compared it to Plum Japonais by Tom Ford. Plum Japonais is my favorite fragrance ever , so I was intrigued. Then it came Gail Gross Cafleurebon review , and I made my mind to check this house out , and I did in London , Harrods to be precise. White Heart v. 7 I end up buying, because of the juicy plum.
I find the whole line really appealing, and there was no fragrance I wouldn’t wear.
Sweetness ?!? and Michelyn “slightly gourmand vibe” … I’m not on the same page with you.
V2 is really ashy , like you smelling glowing ash and embers , with sandalwood and lots of eucalyptus. It was made to emulate the smell of Australian bushfires after all . I don’t get even slightest traces of sweetness, none.
It’s a really good fragrance, but you have to like ashy scents, to appreciate it. I personally do.
    All @cafleurebon, @lookfeelsmellgreat @mapoftheheart @jacqueshuclier @pierdinand i already follow.
    Great draw – thank you.

  • I haven’t had the chance to try any perfumes from Map of The Heart, but I love the concept behind the brand and the bottles are unique.
As always, Sebastian manages to describe the experience of wearing the perfume in his own way, by concentrating on the sweet, gourmand smoky note. The eucalyptus note seems to add another dimension with it’s mint like quality.

Thank you, Sebastian for the wonderful review and Map of Heart for the amazing draw!

    Best wishes from Romania, EU.

Can’t get enough of Sebastian’s reviews. I find myself watching more and more of his reviews just because our tastes are so similar. This review of Black Heart V.2 was no exception… I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the next one. I have heard of Map of the Heart before and I am really intrigued by them. I planned on purchasing the White Heart V.7 a while back and a few other things got in the way. I need to revisit that idea and just pull the trigger! I jut watched the smokey video by Sebastian earlier this weekend and that was a great video…. to see this featured separately with it’s own video is great though! Thank you Sebastian, for another great review of a Map of the Heart fragrance… Your Red Heart V.3 was a great watch as well! Thank you Sarah and Jeffrey for your generosity and this “heart”felt opportunity! It is greatly appreciated! Thank you, as always, to the lovely Michelyn for putting this all together. Without her, we would not have any of these draws! Sending love and comments from Delaware, US. Good luck to all!

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s enthusiasm and rich descriptions. I am intrigued by the combination of sewwt and smoky. I am from USA
