Essential Parfums Divine Vanille Review (Olivier Pescheux) 2019 + Luminous Vanilla Draw

Essential Parfums Divine Vanille review

Since my meeting with Géraldine Archambault, founder and creative director of Essential Parfums, last March, I’ve been curious about Essential Parfums Divine Vanille. During our informal discussion, Géraldine emerged as a woman with a deep knowledge of the fragrance industry, as well as a creative director who knows exactly what she wants – and, most importantly, how to achieve it. Her first five fragrances were all contemporary, uplifting, utterly enjoyable compositions centered around a basic ingredient, created by some of the world’s most renowned perfumers (The Musс was composed by Calice BeckerRose Magnetic by Sophie Labbé, Orange X Santal by Natalie Gracia-Cetto, Nice Bergamote by Antoine Maisondieu, and Mon Vetiver by Bruno Jovanovic). What’s even more commendable is that Essential Parfums always manage to meet two additional standards: true focus on sustainability, and widely affordable pricing.

Géraldine may be giving carte blanche to the perfumers she’s working with, but not before she fully communicates the olfactory result she aims for. When I asked her seven months ago what her vanilla fragrance would be like, she answered me in one – decisive – word that it would be “different”, adding (after my eagerness to know more): “it will be neither a heavy oriental, nor excessively gourmand/sugary sweet; it will certainly be based on beautiful naturals!” For Essential Parfums Divine Vanille, she worked with Givaudan’s VP Perfumer Olivier Pescheux (his oeuvre includes several beautiful scents for Diptyque), who created a bright and airy, but substantially complex and evolving, vanilla-centered fragrance – one that easily transformed my initial curiosity to sheer delight.

The “star of the show”, the precious Madagascar vanilla, is present at every stage of the scent’s evolution – well-behaved, self-confident, at ease with her own sensuality (the film critic in me can’t help thinking of Grace Kelly while writing this!) Like a wisely generous performer, the vanilla does not seek to overshadow the other ingredients; instead, she works harmonically with them, creating fascinating aromatic alchemies that ultimately highlight all her own exciting facets. At start, the vanilla absolute welcomes a generous dose of warm, electrifying cinnamon (encompassing both the plant’s sweet spiciness, and the woodiness of its bark), a touch of tingly black pepper, and the unique floralcy of Chinese osmanthus (with all its apricot/peach, and leather nuances). The opening is as exhilarating as one could hope for, altogether spicy, balmy, bright and delicious, with undercurrents that range from a chai latte vibe (the combination of the spices with the vanilla’s creamy, lactonic aspects), to a fascinating mixture of blond tobacco, sweet hay and suede leather (the interaction between vanilla, osmanthus, clary sage, and the emerging coumarin and patchouli).

As the woods, resins and incense develop, the vanilla becomes smokier, and profoundly sensual. The stunning tonka bean from Venezuela acts as the vanilla’s ideal co-star, contributing its almond-like aromatic properties, and a booziness that resembles spiced rum. The astonishingly green Indonesian patchouli is a crucial balancing factor at this stage, providing a counterpoint to the sweet, richly balsamic Laotian benzoin. Reading the notes list, one might expect the fragrance to transform into a full-bodied, robust oriental; however, the alchemy between vanilla and resins colors the fragrance with only a light amber shade. The scent’s drydown is largely a vanilla one-act show (after all, she deserves it for being so well-mannered!), and it’s a long, smooth and comforting one, due the presence of a fluffy musk base.

Regarding ecological and social responsibility, Essential Parfums Divine Vanille achieves a small triumph: the main raw materials – vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, clary sage, osmanthus, patchouli, benzoin, tonka bean, cedar – are all natural, and many of them also sourced in a sustainable manner, as part of Givaudan’s “Innovative Naturals” program. Through the latter, the vanilla producers in Madagascar, the tonka bean collectors in Venezuela, the benzoin harvesters in Laos, and the patchouli farmers in Indonesia are being aided by teams of experts so as to source steady quantities of the respective raw materials, in a way that will protect the natural environment. Last but not least, apart from providing training on sustainable production, the aforementioned program includes contributions to the local producers’ communities in the form of income management assistance, as well as health and education facilities.

Infused with the luminous sensuality of sun-warmed skin, and a contagious joie de vivre spirit, Essential Parfums Divine Vanille is a fragrance accessible to all, even to those who tend to shy away from its main ingredient. Wearing it with abandon for a full week since I arrived at my home country, Greece, I’ve received longer, tight hugs from friends and relatives than ever. Yes, they’ve missed me, but they also loved that smell.

Notes: Clary Sage, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Osmanthus, Incense, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Benzoin, Patchouli, Cedar, Musk.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank Géraldine Archambault of Essential Parfums for my bottle of Essential Parfums Divine Vanille. The opinions are my own.

  • I love vanilla and woody accords so a vanilla-centric perfume that “becomes smokier as the woods, resins and incense develop” seems right up my alley! Don’t have a favorite Essential Parfums fragrance as I have not heard of this brand before…but its focus on sustainability and affordable pricing makes this brand worth looking into. Regards from Boston, USA.

  • Despina’s review is very synthetic ans precise. She explains so well the way all the ingredients interact with each other. I also enjoyed all the details about the sustainability and the way Essential Parfums is helping the small local producers. And on top of all, I love vanilla, so I’m very curious about Divine Vanille. I live in EU.

  • drsuzannesharief says:

A “different” Vanilla! How intriguing…what I loved most about the review is that it painted a picture about the concept of the perfume and it leaves you even more curious than if you just read the notes. I don’t own any from the house and would LOVE to win a bottle. Vanilla is my all time favorite note and it is vanilla season. I’m in the US

  • I love a vanilla that is not for the kids. The notes sound gorgeous, esp the green patchouli and cinnamon, plus my pal vanilla. I want Greek relatives to hug. I live in the USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I love that the main fragrance ingredients are all natural and am excited to try this line, as I am also a Calice Becker fan. I live in the US and thank you Essential Parfums for your generosity.

  • My goodness this sounds magical. I loved how the writer walks you through the stages of the fragrance! Well done! I’ve never tried Essential Parfums and live in the USA.

  • Andrei artimon says:

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

i love vanilla centric scents as they are bit gourmand-ish feel to it. So you feel different level of confidence.

I don’t have a favorite Essential parfums fragrance as I have not heard of this brand before…but its focus on sustainability and affordable pricing makes this brand worth looking into.

Despina’s review is to the point covering all important topics around the fragrance which is quite nice.

  • This sounds fantastic! I love vanilla as long as it doesn’t go to feminine sweet. Vanilla and woods are my favorite mix in fragrances. Great review. US.

  • Greetings from Ft Lauderdale Florida (USA)What a great article. I’ve been a fan of the Essential Parfums line for about two years now. My favorite scent is Musc by Calice B. I’m a huge fan of Vanilla fragrances. And just to reag all of this information about vanilla and the bbn process of making these wonderful fragrances is truly amazing and beautiful too. I can’t wait to smell this fragrance. 😉

  • AlwaysWater says:

I love the entire description, but it was the ending sentence about your friends/fam hugging you just a little longer that really spoke to me. Thats almost half the reason I’ll wear a cozy and interesting scent 🙂 Half for my own enjoyment, and the rest to encourage my loved ones to squeeze me USA

  • Vanilla is one of my favorite scents and flavors! Unfortunately, I have not tried any Essential perfumes before but with the beautiful descriptive words by Despina I will try soon. Loved the picture of a vanilla plant. Thank you USA

  • This fragrance sounds wonderful. I love vanilla scents and the way the review describes it working together with all of these other wonderful notes sounds like it will be unique and amazing. I also like the brands commitment to sustainability very much it is refreshing to see. I would very much like to try this fragrance as well as the others from Essential Parfums. In the U.S. Thanks to everyone involved for the generous draw.

  • Black pepper, cinnamon and vanilla? Perhaps not “excessively” gourmand, but it still sounds delicious. I adore vanilla and I’ve long wanted a “reference” vanilla fragrance by which all others should be compared. Could this be the one?

    Cheers from the US!

  • As a unisex fragrance lover, I tend to shy away from very sweet perfumes. Divine Vanille sounds like it may be my cup of tea with notes of clary sage, black pepper, incense and cedar. Ms Despina’s description made it delightfully unique. Tha

  • I’m still trying to find a vanilla perfume I love. Most are too foody or boozy. I’m intrigued by the use of natural ingredients including clary sage and patchouli. I love the description as bright and airy which are not terms I usually associate with vanilla scents. I’ve not tried any Essential Parfums fragrances before, Great review Despina!. I live in the US

  • Allllllll of this sounds wonderful. I have a big soft spot for vanilla but haven’t found many that I would actually wear. THIS one sounds like it might fit the bill! The promise of smokiness in particular is making my eyes light up.

I don’t have a favorite Essential Parfums fragrance, but Divine Vanille could be it. 😉 I am in the U.S.A.

  • This sounds like a different kind of vanilla because of the woody and spicy notes. I would be very curious to try it. I am not familiar with any of the fragrances with the line but will look out for them. I live in the USA.

  • Being obsessed with both vanilla and patchouli, I really wonder if Divine Vanille is actually as well-composed and as magical as Despina Veneti’s description. VA, USA.

  • Rashun Moss says:

What I remember most about the review is the urge to create a different vanilla scent .
When I hear vanilla I think of the standard overly sweet gourmand-ish note , but to read that this vanilla settles to something smoky and rich has my nose intrigued. I haven’t had the pleasure of smelling a Essential Parfum fragrance before so I do not currently have a favorite . I love is pompano beach , Florida

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Vanilla start to finish with the many changes sounds wonderful and one of a kind.

Oh the dream: at ease with her own sensuality :), yet generously waiting to star the show only at drydown. The ingredients sound heavenly, oh and what joy, mostly natural and responsibly sourced!! I have not worn any essential perfumes fragrances, but I sure will look forward to finding this one. I live in Bucharest Romania

  • I’m always glad to hear about sustainable and ethical practices in perfumery. I appreciate vanilla notes very much, but am not keen on heavily gourmand fragrances. This one sounds sensual and sophisticated. I would love to try it!

  • This fragrance has three ingredients that i love in parfumery…vanilla, incense and tonka bean,so I’m really excited to try this fragrance.I really apreciate the sustainability and that Essential Parfums ia helping small local producere.Thank You for the draw.I’m from EU.

  • Mihaela Murariu says:

Wow, so intrigue about this diffrent vanilla.Great review Despina Vaneti,so precise how interact ingredient, beautyful photos. It make me feel I am surrounded of vanilla.Thank you for sharing this review, I’m verry excited to try it. Best regards from Romania, Europe.

  • Divine Vanille sounds divine indeed ! I love the concept of creating a ‘different’ type of vanilla scent emphasizing the different facets of the main theme. I wholeheartedly applause the sustainability aspect as well – something very much needed today in the perfume industry.
I think Despina’s review was great in highlighting every aspect of Divine Vanille.
Would love to try ! Based in Romania

  • I really liked the idea of an airy, well mannered vanilla perfume. I find most vanillas nowadays are so overly busy being so sweet they give you a toothache, in incredibly dense, compact, heavy concoctions where all you smell is vanilla and more vanilla. This aristocratic vanilla would be a wonderful and welcome change. I also like Essential Parfums’ concept about using natural ingredients from sustainable productions, even though i never had the chance to smell anything from them. I would like to try this, from Europe.

  • After reading about all those notes, it’s hard to believe the “ scent’s drydown is largely a vanilla one-act show”!

  • fazalcheema says:

Despina says Essential Parfums Divine Vanille is a vanilla fragrance that may appeal to even those who do not like vanilla dominant fragrance. I have not tried anything from Essential Parfums yet. I am in US

  • Vanilla is one of my favourite notes , so to hear it’s a different / unique take on vanilla , it has my curiosity peaked.
The fact it becomes smokier as the woods, resins and incense develop is really appealing to me.

I love smokiness in fragrances too , so to have it combined with vanilla is really interesting.

    From the Eu.

  • scentifolia says:

I am not familiar with Essential Parfums fragrances but I joyfully took part in their vanilla development project : I sampled two vanilla scents by Olivier Pescheux, both were stunning and pretty unique ! I really enjoyed reading Despina’s detailed review and learning about Givaudan’s “Innovative Naturals” program. I am from Nîmes, France.

  • Oh, how exciting! A love song for vanilla, this is now my final impression. I loved the journey from Grace Kelly to Gaugain. Great job! Never had the pleasure to test any fragrance, but by the sound of it, when I will do it, it will probably be love at first smell:-) i live in EU

  • patrick_348 says:

I live in North Carolina in the US and don’t know any Esssential Parfums scents. But I very much like the idea of giving a new spin on familiar notes and from Despina’s descriiption, it sounds like this attempt has been a big success. I appreciate her description of the sourcing of the ingredients and Esssential’s commitment to sustainability.

  • @chrisskins: I’m sure that American hugs can be just as great!
@scentifolia: I wasn’t aware that there had been a testing of this sort, good to know that you found both “finalists” stunning and unique! I hope the one that wasn’t chosen will find its way to a commercial release in the future.
Thank you all for your comments!

  • Not only does this fragrance sound beautiful but I love that the ingredients were all sourced in a sustainable manner. I’m trying to purchase more items that are produced this way. It’s difficult, though, because some of my favorite fragrances don’t do this. I really love these notes and will try to get my hands on a sample.
    I live in the USA.

  • Nice review, i love the note of vanilla in a fragrance especially if it’s on the incensy alley. The notes list look just great, i would love to try it. Thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • Wow wood and vanilla what a great combo. A nice and uplifting combination for this time of the year. Looking forward to try!! Living in the EU

  • Spicy and balsamic , bright and delicious, with chai latte and suede leather vibe . Despina description picked up my interest.
Date scent is what I imagined.
Never knew Despina is Greek . I was under the impression she’s French.
I have no experience with Essential Parfums.
    Thank you. USA

  • This is a fortuitous post. Divine Vanille just recently hit my radar. I have not tried any Essential Parfums but Divine Vanille interests me a lot. I like that it’s ” ‘different’ “. I also like that it’s mainly sustainable raw materials. In the US.

  • Olivier Pescheux composed Parfums de Marly Herod , he knows well how to implement vanilla into the mix , without making it overbearing and shadowing other notes. Divine Vanilla I have not smelled, but sounds really good especially the rum resemblance.
Nice Bergamote is my gym fragrance. Smells good , it’s fresh and clean and it’s well priced.
Thank you Despina and Essential Parfums.

Holy cow…. the whole article has my attention… partly because I have been fantasizing about Essential Parfums for a while now…. the only thing that kind of blows my mind, is why I have not gotten a sample kit yet, or even a full bottle or two. The pricing on these bottles is ridiculously affordable, for any fragrance…. throw in these absolutely stunning perfumers, the quality of ingredients that go into them, and the fact that these are truly remarkable scents (so I have heard from everyone that has tested some of them), I am stupid not to already have a few bottles. That WILL change! The review was beautiful Despina, and you are making me want to get a bottle of Divine Vanille right this second! Thank you for reminding me to check in to them again as I will be getting a sample pack either way. A big thanks to Michelyn and Geraldine for this opportunity! It is truly appreciated! I live in Delaware, US.

  • Cinnamon, Black pepper and incense intrigued me the most I have not got any vanilla perfumes in my collection. My favourite from the line magnetic rose. I liked the way they protect the environment and self sustainability. Cheers from UK

  • Patchouli, cedar and musk and vanilla and incense are my favourite notes in perfumery. I am afraid I have not tried anything by this brand. Thanks from UK

  • wallygator88 says:

I love the way Despina talks about and ties together all the fragrance notes. This is also a suprisingly affordable fragrance.

I haven’t had the chance to smell them before.

  • So we have Madagascar vanilla and rum fragrance with lactonic vibe?
I was instantly reminded of Rum Raisin Cake – with a caramel filling and rum buttercream frosting with milk . Pastry Chef in the house.
It’s a bit surprising to read Essential Parfums use natural ingredients, and especially Madagascar vanilla . , and still keep the prices relatively low. As a Pastry Chef I can tell working with Madagascar vanilla is not cheap, and prices will go higher soon. I also have to say 2/3 of the Madagascar vanilla on the market is fake , mostly vanillin.
Out of curiosity I’ll check it out , and also hope the smell of Devine Vanilla will remind me of Rum Raisin Cake.
Appreciate Despina review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I love me some vanilla. The composition is made even more intriguing by the vanilla’s ability to harmonize so well with its co-stars. Even though I’ve never smelled anything from the brand, this bottle would be a good start. Commenting from USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

I appreciated that, although vanilla is the ‘star’s of the show, it blends well with all the other notes, and isn’t sickeningly sweet. Tonka, patchouli, vanilla, etc. – nothing to dislike there. Regards from Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I love vanilla in many compositions. I often use vanilla for layering, so, for me would be interesting to smell a different one.
Very good review, with quality information and a warm description. I never tried this brand before, but Essential Parfums deserve to be promoted because they care about sustainability.

  • The concept of being “different” caught my eye. There are so many vanilla perfumes and one that is different definitely is interesting. This sounds amazing and beautiful. Something I would really want to try. Thanks for the generous draw and the informative review. I’m in the USA

  • Famous perfumers, environmental friendly packaging , natural smelling vanilla at such price ? Wow
And let’s face it, who doesn’t like vanilla fragrances garnished with resins , during late autumn and winter?
I need to check Essential Parfums as soon as possible.
Thank you Despina for sharing your thoughts.

  • wildevoodoo says:

This sounds incredible! I’ve loved several Pescheux creations I’ve tried, and this scent sounds like it would beautifully satisfy my vanilla cravings without the saccharine-sweetness that plagues so many vanilla-centric perfumes today. The blond tobacco, the gradually emerging smokiness, the tonka and benzoin in the drydown, and most of all, the ‘chai latte’ nuance brought on by the lactonic creamy sensation mixing with the spices all lead me to believe this is the perfect fragrance for me. In addition to vanilla, I adore smoke, spice, tonka, and resins, and have been searching for my perfect chai fragrance since I first became a perfume enthusiast. I also think it’s fantastic that Givaudan’s sustainability initiative has taken off! We all want the materials in our beloved perfumes to stay around for as long as possible. I have never tried anything from Essential Parfums before! I am in the US 🙂

  • Michael Prince says:

Despina, great review of Essential Parfums Divine Vanille. I love the balsamic, incense, resinous, and vanilla experience this fragrance offers with all natural ingredients. My favorite Essential Parfums fragrance is The Musc. I am from the USA.

  • I love vanilla so much that I’ll get anything that has it. This sounds like a yummy fragrance one will wear to a special occasion. Despina did s great job mentioning all the notes and how they interact with each other.
I live in USA and this one is my favorite.

  • So excited to try this unusual vanilla… Interested in the metamorphosis of the scent Despina describes! I’m in CA.

  • Vanille is one of those olfactory notes that reaches the heart and you fall madly in love. This seems to me a warm and enveloping vanilla scent, no doubt suited to the approaching winter season, a beautiful blanket that envelops you.
    Linda – UE

  • First, a more natural vanilla with all my favorites (benzoin, tonka, patchouli) that somehow isn’t overwhelming! Then that they have been able to obtain sustainably sourced raw materials as well. That is amazing. I am in the US.

  • Essential Parfums is prime example how you can hire top tier noses, to use quality ingredients mostly natural, EDP concentration , nice smelling fragrances and on top of all to sell them bellow most designer prices. Unbelievable.
I remember Sebastian also did his impressions on YouTube on Essential Parfums a few months back, and he said they are all good. Rose Magnetic I remember was his favorite. Back then I presume Divine Vanille was not yet available.
Boozy vanilla? Rum accords? Say no more, I’m in.
Thank you for the draw. USA

  • Oh..I like vanilla, and if it is “smokier, and profoundly sensual” due to resines and woods ..I guess it will bee very interesting and beautiful for me.

  • I love the sound of this fragrance but even more than that I like the ecological/social sustainability aims of the brand. “Clean” perfumes and cosmetics are all the rage right now but I am really interested in a brand caring about how they do business. This sounds like a real crowd-pleaser without being mainstream or boring (if that makes sense). I’ll be ordering a sample set if they add this fragrance to it! Thanks for the review & the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I loved Despina’s review as well as the part about ecological and social responsibility! This sounds like an amazing vanilla especially a smoky vanilla. I also like how each ingredient plays it’s own part as the fragrance develops. My favorite part is: “The “star of the show”, the precious Madagascar vanilla, is present at every stage of the scent’s evolution – well-behaved, self-confident, at ease with her own sensuality (the film critic in me can’t help thinking of Grace Kelly while writing this!” I haven’t tried anything from this brand and thanks for the introduction. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Benjamin McFadden says:

What I enjoyed most about the review it’s descriptions of the fragrance’s composition from begining to end. We got to hear the details of the notes and the nuances of the accords ! I have never tried this brand, but would love to ! Hattiesburg, ms

  • I imagine this to smell divine. The combination of vanilla and osmanthus, and a promise of real, natural raw materials for sure makes it different. I like that Despina highlighted the sustainable and responsible way of producing them. I live in US, about an hour drive from Chicago.
