Olfactive Studio Leather Shot (Bertrand Duchaufour) Review + Sepia Collection Draw

Julia Melnykova, phot by Frederico Martins for Vogue Portugal, August 2013

Olfactive Studio is on a roll. The photography-inspired house has reeled out a number of lovely fragrances, but none better than it last two perfumes, 2017’s Woody Mood and Flashback in New York from earlier this year. These are perfect cool weather scents: rich, dense, balanced, with lovely, specific and affecting touches. Now, Creative Director Celine Verleure adds the line’s first three extrait perfumes with the Olfactive Studio Sepia Collection. Created by Bertrand Duchaufour, the three perfumes are Vanilla Shot, an incense-y gourmand; bright, spicy Chypre Shot; and, my favourite of the three, Leather Shot, a rooty, smoky leather. Each takes inspiration from the abstract nature photographs of New Zealand environmental artist Martin Hill.

Leather Shot by Martin Hill

The Martin Hill photograph associated with Leather Shot shows a beach with dark, moist sand surrounding a circle of driftwood, A rocky outcrop off the receding shoreline on a fading afternoon. You might expect this to be a woody, even aquatic scent, but what Leather Shot offers is a gorgeous, smoky leather-iris confection accented with spice

Celine Verleure and Bertrand Duchaufour

The Sepia Collection perfumes are housed in elegant burnt orange leather cases that make them look like vintage hip flasks. But open up Olfactive Studio Leather Shot, and, instead of the boozy leather you might expect … holy smoky iris, Batman! What comes out on the skin is an exotic cocktail of cold, rooty iris shot through with with a tart beam of bitter orange. This is one of the most arresting openings I’ve ever smelled in a leather-themed fragrance. And it just gets better from here.

Gloria Grahame Song of the Thin Man (1947)

I pick up the damp smell of cedarwood after rain. The dark grey iris purrs like a film noir femme, smoky and autumnal, cloaked in fog and full of strange allure. The floral note stretches out like a luxuriating cat. It is cleverly underpinned by black tea and dark green, loamy vetiver to create the smoky effect rather than the more predictable and aggressive birch tar. If up Olfactive Studio Leather Shot stopped short in its development right here, and remained a sooty iris, I’d be happy to wear it on dim, rainy nights in a silk dressing gown while channeling Gloria Grahame.

But now comes the leather. Betrand Duchaufour has a particular agility with this ingredient, often showcasing its elegant aspects (Ann Gerard Cuir Nacre) and its affinities with dark flowers, such as The Different Company’s I Miss Violet. But where I Miss Violet heads into the woods, Leather Shot saunters down a backlit city street after dark. This leather is decidedly uptown; elegant, velvety, with a charry touch of tanned hide that keeps it from overt femininity. As the leather moves in front of the iris, spices accompany it: a small pinch of cumin adds a warming touch, while a dusting of cardamom deepens the sootiness of the composition.

Well into the wee hours, up Olfactive Studio Leather Shot clings like the catch of an old song down an alleyway. This is a perfume made for shadows and oblique angles, mood music and night. I’ve been waiting for years for an iris and leather perfume that didn’t play favourites with either note. In Olfactive Studio’s new stunner, I’ve found it.

Notes: cardamom, cumin, bigarade, leather, iris, black tea, sandalwood, cedarwood, driftwood, vetiver.

Disclosure: I received my samples from Olfactive Studio; opinions my own

  • This sounds just like what the doctor ordered for winter. My SO goes crazy for leather scents on me, and I’m quite fond of iris and spicy woody notes. Sounds like a win-win!

I have not had a chance to try this house yet. “This is a perfume made for shadows and oblique angles, mood music and night.” Great line!

  • Just Add Light says:

Rooty iris, bitter orange and velvety leather with a sooty vibe? Now THAT sounds interesting. Never been a big fan of cumin, but the fact that it doesn’t overtake the fragrance on skin is a huge plus. Dior Homme Parfum is probably the only leather-iris that I’ve come to adore over the years, but I’m deeply curious to experience the drier aspects of street leathers like Flash Back in New York. Don’t have a favourite from the brand, but if I did, it would most likely be Still Life. Really enjoyed Lauryn’s description of the transitions. The imagery was decadent! Canada/US.

  • I love Leather fragrances and I’m especially intrigued by the film noir vibe of this one! I’ve never tried Olfactive Studio fragrances, but this one sounds right up my (dark, sooty) alley!

  • Yowza, What a review! This sounds wonderful. My favorite part.

I pick up the damp smell of cedarwood after rain. The dark grey iris purrs like a film noir femme, smoky and autumnal, cloaked in fog and full of strange allure. I live in the U.S. My favorite from the House is Still Life. Thanks for the generous giveaway!

Leather Shot sounds like a fragrance I would love especially from Lauryn’s description of it being a smoky sooty iris that precedes the uptown velvety leather. I have not tried anything by Olfactive Studio but would be thrilled to.

  • Leather Shot seems interesting as it is a smoky leather and I like both leather and smoky genres. Moreover, Duchaufour has already proven himself quite skilled in smoky perfumes. My fav. from Olfactive Studio is Still Life. I am in US.

  • Meg Jamieson says:

This sounds incredibly interesting, accomplished and innovative. What I like best about the review is the encyclopedic knowledge of material and formulas (classic to predictable) that Lauryn shows–how delightful that someone who has clearly smelled so much can still be “arrested” by the opening. And, in particular, “The floral notes stretches out like a luxuriating cat.” seems puuurfect.

I like the description, sounds so dark and mysterious, like a midnight drive down a foggy road. Sounds amazing. For once it’s a house I’ve tried. I ordered a sample set in the summer time and they sent me, at the time, a sample of every fragrance in their lineup. I like or love almost all of them, except selfie, which was sickly sweet. If I had to pick just one favorite, Still Life is just awesome. I still need to try their colder weather ones, been saving them.

  • I definitely would wear Leather Shot after dark, under a soft leather jacket with a deep purple scarf. This is a great brand. I own several fragrances from OS, my favorite being Still Life in Rio. USA

  • RobertNicolasB says:

I love all things iris; the smokier the better! I own and love Still Life. Great review, as always.

  • “This is a perfume made for shadows and oblique angles, mood music and night.” What a lovely turn of phrase. Iris is one of my favorite notes and Leather Shot promises an intriguing take on it. I have not tried any other perfumes from this house, but based on reviews Chambre Noire sounds like another sniff worthy leather.

  • I’ve never had the chance to test any fragrance from Olfactive Studio but i know for sure that i love those bottles, simple but luxurious. Leather Shot looks even cooler and i love those notes listed for it. Thanks for this great draw, i am in the EU.

  • Huge fan of Bertran Duchafour and I became smitten when I seen the subtle analogy to Cuir de Nacre, which was a work of art in and of Itself. I thought this fragrance Leathershot just appeals to my senses on paper from the description. I have always been of fan of iris + leather, especially in the autumn (and I have many leathers in my collection.) Thank you for this opportunity! Also, my favorite from this house was Ombré Indigo…which I miss quite dearly. I live in Niagara Falls and am excited, hoping to win!

  • It sounds very interesting, my fav 2 notes leather and iris. Wow!!! I haven’t tried any Olfactive studio creations and I’m hoping I will soon!! And one last thing the name of this perfume and the bottle rocks!!!
I’m hoping I would win this!!
    I’m from California USA.

  • I particulary liked the last part in which she says about Leather Shot that is a perfume made for night mood, shadows, music and oblique angles. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to test any creation from this house. I am from EU, thanks!

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Looove Heather and iris. First time hear From this house. Id love to try this one Great review as usual Miami Florida Thanks.

  • Gosh, I’ve heard so many great things about this fragrance! I love leather, when it is done correctly and Bertran is a genius so I have no doubts about this scent Have high hopes for this sexy dream! Iris is my favorite floral note and I imagine it will work wonders with leather especially for cold coooold weather.. I am in Germany, thanks

  • Love many of Bertrand’s creations. Interested in what he does with iris and driftwood in this one. Would love to win the bottle. US

  • Frédéric Chevalier says:

This brand has one of my most loved perfume, Panorama! The revieuw is just perfect , the kind who gives the desire to make a blind buy.

  • Thank you Lauryn for this review!
And thanks to Michelyn and Olfactive Studio for this great draw.
I adore leathery perfumes and extra advantage is created by Mr. Bertrand!!
    I am so exited!!
Smoky leather, with tea and violet notes- sounds very impressive.
I like Olfactive Studio Close Up!
I would like to win full bottle of Leather Shot.
    From Armenia

  • I love how you put the leather note from other BD fragrances in perspective. I must admit I am not friend of the cumin in Flash Back in New York, and I would love to experience other differences. Please let me win that bottle to Germany. By the way I’m in Ombre Indigo today, the best from this house in my opinion!

  • I loved knowing that the scent has a smoky effect rather than a black tar one, and I appreciated the whole beautiful description of its complexity and evolution.
I’ve never tried a perfume from Olfactive Studio, thanks for the chance to win a full bottle.
    I live in EU (France).

  • I love Olfactive Studio and am glad that they have a new perfume. Rooty iris leather sounds gorgeous and Lauryn really has my imagination going. Bertrand Duchaufour is my favorite perfumer and my favorite Olfactive Studio is Ombré indigo

  • This perfume sounds very nicely from the base of this interesting review. And the notes also sounds very good. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • i like leathery perfumes and read this perfume with big interest and pleasure. Thanks!
WOW- smoky iris;”holy smoky iris”!! Sounds great!
I mostly like this part:”This leather is decidedly uptown; elegant, velvety, with a charry touch of tanned hide that keeps it from overt femininity”.
    I like Chambre Noire.
    Now I am in Armenia.

  • I love-love-love Cuir Nacre (haven’t bought it yet but it’s in my plans). Leather-iris combo makes CN impossible to forget but this brilliant review has me wondering what Monsieur Duchaufour made with this duet this time. I assume it’s something spectacular.

I’ve tried nothing from OS yet but I hope I will. Russia

  • Why would I like to smell Leather Shot? Because it sounds as if Bertrand Duchaufour, who’s always had some sort of strange paranormal sense for what pleases my nose, has just tumbled together a list of loads of notes I love (orange, smoke, iris, leather, tea, woods) but which aren’t often found in each other’s company, to make something truly wonderful. I’ve had mixed, but always interesting, experimental results with Olfactive Studio before – so far, I find it hard to choose between Chambre Noire and Woody Mood. I live in the UK.

  • Always a lover of leathers. Always a lover of Bertrand Duchaufor. This is an exciting combination for Olfactory Studios. The description of leather traveling a city alley after the rain is quite visceral. Would love to explore what that means! How nice is would be to add to by burgeoning OS collection beside Panorama and Still Life.

  • The leather and the Iris sounds so sexy… with bitter orange? Maybe something with the same vibes as Dior Homme Parfum?
I am curious to smell this one. Thank you having organized this giveaway!

  • Bertrand Duchaufour is my absolute favorite perfumer! I want to smell everything he creates, but Lauryn’s last lines about music, shadows, oblique angles, and the balance of iris and leather without playing favorites would have me dying to try it regardless of its creator. I have not tried any fragrances from Olfactive Studios yet. The sample set would be a perfect introduction! Thanks for the chance to win!

  • You had me at smokey leather iris!!! I have not tried this house. But, Duchaufour? Bring it! Happy Thanksgiving!

  • So glad to see Leather Shot getting love in the comments! For iris and leather lovers, this one is really worth a try. Don’t let the cumin note scare you off — it is quite subtle.

  • I liked the article, but particulary the part where she described the iris purring like a femme fatale from a film noir. Definitely this creation would be something I would love.

I am from EU. Thank you!

  • Every single one of these notes is appealing. Lauryn’s obvious love for the perfume shines through and makes me want to race out and try it (maybe in a few months time). I have Lumière Blanche and love it, especially in summer. Thanks for the amazing draw.

  • Each one sounds so good, I’m not sure if I could choose! I like the photo associated with leather shot, but don’t have a favorite scent from this house. I think i would like the sample set if I won, thank you for the generous draw! In in the us

  • I love that the bottle looks like a vintage big flask. This description “What comes out on the skin is an exotic cocktail of cold, rooty iris shot through with with a tart beam of bitter orange” made me love it even more. It sounds so intriguing and exciting.
I don’t have a favorite Olfactive Studio perfume.

  • Loved the pictures of Old film stars! Leather shot sounds like a great fragrance. This is one I would love to try. The full bottle would work for me. Thank you for the chance. I live in the Us.

  • I love wearing leather fragrances in the winter. This one sounds extra special because of the black tea and vetiver. I’d love to win a full bottle.

    I live in the USA.

  • Leather, Iris, spices, woods, vetiver and tea could make for something marvelous. There are not very many leather fragrances that I have tried that have impressed me much, but this just might. An uptown leather with a charry touch sounds delectable. Canada.

  • “What comes out on the skin is an exotic cocktail of cold, rooty iris shot through with with a tart beam of bitter orange”
    Ok…tell me more…
” black tea and dark green, loamy vetiver to create the smoky effect rather than the more predictable and aggressive birch tar. ”
    More pls…
“As the leather moves in front of the iris, spices accompany it: a small pinch of cumin adds a warming touch, while a dusting of cardamom deepens the sootiness of the composition.”

Ok -i’ll most definately sample Leather Shot .Nice job Lauryn Beer-be more active on IG
Love Olfactive Studio house-own 100ml of Chambre Noire and Ombre
Indigo, and small 10ml decants of Still Life in Rio,Selfie and Close Up.
Chambre Noire is compliment monster on my skin.Every time i’m wearing it i’m getting at least 3-4 compliments-no joke. The best one from the brand-huge fan here.
The only thing i don’t like about the brand is changing the bottles – older bottles like my 100ml Chambre Noire both look and feel much better…imo.Right now i’m watching my old bottle of Chambre Noire and the new bottle of Ombre Indigo right next to it , and i’m like “Why????”
Just like Xerjoff with their new bottles-same mistake…for no reason.
Even through the new orange sleeve bottles are quite good , i much prefer the original ones.Personal preference i guess.
I’d like to win full bottle of Leather Shot pls.
Virginia USA or London UK … at least 97/100 times.

  • I am sllooooowly warming to leather fragrances. Its a new thing for me. This one does sound intriguing for its rooty smoky element…and i do like to sniff what ol’ Bertrand makes!

Thanks for the draw, I am in Melbourne Australia

  • I enjoyed the review and how Leather shot is associated with the dark mysterious charm of a femme fatale. I do not know anything from this house and I think that Leather shot would be a great start. I am from EU. Thanks!

  • Rooty iris and bitter orange in the opening , cedarwood after rain, black tea and dark vetiver with smoky effect and high-quality velvety leather and cardamom/n (depends where you’re from) – sounds pretty good.
    Good job Lauryn Beer.
I do have in my collection 100ml bottles of Close Up and Ombre Indigo , but i’m running very low on the 2nd one.Hope it’s not discontinued , because it was not available on EU version of the official site last time i checked.
Full bottle of Leather Shot is my choice.
Non-stop back and forth between USA and Scotland – 1 week is US-> 1 week in Scotland and so on… so basically US and Scotland (EU) at the same time

  • Lauryn’s description of the opening of this fragrance sounds like something that must be experienced. I’ve had little experience with leather fragrances, but this sounds like a fabulous place to start.I’ve sampled Woody Mood and loved it. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Interesting fragrance. Opening with a shot of rooty iris and bitter orange
Then comes the darker notes. Would like to try this one out. Enjoyed the article. Thanks U.S.

  • Leather fragrances are some of my favorites. Bertrand Duchaufour is one of my all time favorite perfumers.
Lauryn, as always has a great way with words. The phrase “The dark grey iris purrs like a film noir femme, smoky and autumnal, cloaked in fog and full of strange allure. The floral note stretches out like a luxuriating cat. ” is pure poetry and manages to convey the idea exactly and beautifully.
Thank you for such wonderful readings.
My favorite creation from Olfactive Studio is Ombre Indigo, another great leather based fragrance.
Leather Shot sounds great, so a full bottle would be my choice for the draw.
Thank you for a very generous draw.
    I’m in Romania, EU.

  • Great review Lauryn what I love the best about the review is the damp smell of cedarwood after rain. I love the smell of everything after it rains. Great looking burnt orange bottle! Thanks from the USA

  • Mmmm, iris and leather! Lovely review as I would have also picked something in the film noir to associate with this perfume. I haven’t tried anything from this house before ebut it sounds like they have very interesting fragrances.i would prefer the full bottle and I live in the USA. Thanks!

  • This sound amazing. Good to know Bertrand has a special touch with leather. II am not familiar with this house, was in a shop that had it briefly and not time to thoroughly explore this line. I’d love to win the leather shot!! Thanks for the chance!! USA.

  • Combination of leather and smoky iris seems perefct for me. At least for this autumn. I would love to win this last work of Bartrand D. I live in the EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • Great review Lynn! I LOVE leather fragrances and this one was made just for me!! Yes, I said Bertrand created this one just for me. It is composed of my DNA: leather, smoke, iris, cardamom, and cumin. My favorite line was “This is a perfume made for shadows and oblique angles, mood music and night.” Thanks for the draw and I live in the US!
