Bond No 9 Coney Island and Wonder Wheel (digital Michelyn)
This summer has flown by, and while the temperatures aren’t whispering of fall, the back to school sales and aisles full of spiral notebooks, pencils, glue, and backpacks are screaming it. For those looking to squeeze in some last minute summer fun, take a fragrant trip that conjures a seaside 24/7 carnival. If this sounds like the vacation you wish you hadn’t missed this year, check out Bond No. 9’s Coney Island.

Bond No. 9 mission since its inception is “making scents” of New York, capturing its many neighborhoods, diverse cultures and beaches in a bottle. In 2007, Creative Director Laurice Rahme in collaboration with Master perfumer Michel Almairac of Robertet, released Coney Island, homage to the resort that opened to the public right after the Civil War and whose Brooklyn beach, boardwalks and amusement parks, was once a playground for the rich and famous. Before there was Disneyland, before there was Seven Flags, the place for summer fun was a small strip of sand stands on the Atlantic Ocean

I am landlocked and have never been to Coney Island (nor New York for that matter), so Bond No 9’s Coney Island was like a trip to the fabled amusement park. It opens with a tart and fresh note of lemons that remind me of fresh squeezed lemonade and lemon hard candies.

Juicy fruity and fun boozy notes (the type that have umbrellas) come into play. Then the real fun begins as fluffy, soft-colored clouds of cotton candy float by. Sweet baked treats waft through the air…cakes, candy vanilla ice cream and sticky gooey caramel

Lest you think this is a treacly gourmand, the real magic is that Bond No.9 Coney Island transforms into a day at the beach, with marine notes of sea air, driftwood at the drydown. It is a perfume party, a crazy ride on the Cyclone and as polarizing as Thierry Mugler’s Angel. It deserves some blogger love, especially as the temperatures soar and there is no place I would rather be than by the shore.
Notes: margarita mix, melon, guava, cinnamon, chocolate, caramel, musk, vanilla, cedarwood, and sandalwood.
