Sonoma Scent Studio Bee’s Bliss (Laurie Erickson) 2017 ~New Fragrance Review + Summoning Summer Draw

Vogue Australia 2013  The Sweetest Things apped by Michelyn

I often suspect that California native artisan perfumer Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio, doesn’t receive due appreciation for her marvelously creative body of olfactory compositions. Few Indie perfumers offer similarly beautiful, joyfully-wearable work at a reasonable price point for such quality – and very few have been doing so for nearly as long as she has. Laurie’s latest – Bee’s Bliss – evokes eternal summer brilliantly. Whenever one thirsts for that estival ‘shot in the arm’, a sumptuous garden in full bloom accompanied by the buzzing of contented bees – Bee’s Bliss will immediately summon that recollection. Her perfume encapsulates summer captured in amber.

Magnolia Mae via Laurie Erickson

Tender-hearted Laurie’s perfume is dedicated to her friend and assistant Nancy:12 years ago, a very beautiful and loving snowy feline wandered into Nancy’s garden. She became known as Magnolia Mae, and was a loving companion until her passing last year. Laurie felt that only the gentlest fragrance would provide a fitting tribute.

Alice in Wonderland Talking Flowers 2010 Tim Burton

At first anointing, I feel as if I’m wandering about in Alice in Wonderland’s garden in The Golden Afternoon. The profusion of floral voices is sorcery: they speak, and I listen intently. Their intonations are sunny, sweet, dripping with juice and honeyed murmurings.

Paul Cezanne The Four Seasons

Something hangs back in the underbrush – the promise of shade, a moist beckoning leafy presence. What lingers beneath acts as both aromatic anchor and counterpoint to exuberant blossoms and luscious fruits.

Picnic At Hanging Rock Movie Still 1975

A sigh of patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss conversing in hushed tones, a delicate sotto voce amongst benzoin, amber and musk contribute their collective fragrant conspiratorial whispers to Bee’s Bliss’ masterful composition. It is a perfume in which one basks, much like cats sprawled out in the warm sunlight: serene, at ease, at one with their environs and blithely satisfied.

Notes: bergamot, apricot, peachorange blossom, jasmine, mimosa, lilac, heliotrope, beeswax, honey, iris, vetiver, greenleaves, benzoin, amber, oakmoss, patchouli, musk.

Many thanks to Laurie Erickson for the sample! My nose is my own…

  • Ida, such beautiful, evocative prose: you say so much in what is actually a very brief review, and it makes me want to smell Bee’s Bliss all the more. Laurie is a wonder, and my first love was Tabac Aurea (a scent I turn to at this time of year!). Nothing helps me summon summer in these dark, damp days like spritzing on a bright citrus fragrance and playing Latin music at full blast!

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

Tabac Aurea, Winter Wood, Forest Walk. They have stolen my ❤️ Laurie is a master of perfumery as Ida ia a master with words.
Patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss, the dream trio!
Ida makes me want to exist in this Garden of Eden.
    I am in the USA.

I’ve been waiting for November 16 (or around that time, as Laurie’s blog notes) so I can get my hands on a sample of this! I love beeswax in a perfume, but there aren’t too many out there with it as a note… this in at the top of my try-list! Laurie’s creations are among my favorites in all the perfume world. Champagne de Bois is my very favorite, with Cocoa Sandalwood and Tabac Aurea coming in second.

I love Ida’s reference to Alice’s golden afternoon.

    I don’t summon summertime… I endure it. 🙂 But I still can’t wait to try this!

    Thanks for the generous draw!!

  • Thanks for the review Ida. Haven’t smelled anything from Sonoma Scents. Need to try. This fragrance sounds nice

  • Wonderful review! The way I summon summer (particularly in the colder months) is wearing scents that invoke a summery feel. Bobbi Brown’s Beach or Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess fragrances are my go-to scents to bring about the feel of summer.

I have never owned any Sonoma Scent Studio fragrances but looking at the website, I love the notes of Tabac Aurea.

    I live in the U.S.

  • I love Ida’s musical references in her reviews, it brings her reviews to light!
I love Laurie’s perfumes, each has such an intimate, bespoke feel to them. Among my favorites are Opal, Egyptian Musk, Jour Ensoleillé, Cameo and Lieu de Rêves, Bee’s Bliss sounds wonderful and right up my alley! I would love to be entered for the draw.

  • What a beautiful review. Laurie is the sweetest of people and her talent with fragrance is so special. My most favorite are Lieu de Reves, Nostalgie and Rose Volupte. The idea of a Sonoma Scent Studio composition featuring beeswax makes me feel faint. I’m another who endures summer due to illness so perfumes that call memories of the season before I had to hide inside from it are what I have to bring it to me now. Thank you for the chance to be in this drawing!

  • Ida, thank you so very much for this beautiful review on a new release from one of my all time favorite perfumers EVER. I wholeheartedly agree with your first sentence that Laurie does not nearly get the accolades that she so richly deserves. My favorite SSS? Where to begin? Over the years I have drained many bottles and travels sprays- Seinna Musk, Lieu de Reves, To Dream, Winter Woods, Champagne de Bois, Egyptian Musk, Jour Ensoleille, Forest Walk, Cocoa Sandalwood, Spiced Citrus Vetiver….and I love them all! I summon summertime through fragrance and Bee’s Bliss sounds like the perfect way to do it. Thank you for this draw! I am in the USA

Thanks for this review and for the draw. I always look forward to new scents from SSS. My favorite is usually Tabac Aurea, but I also really love Champagne de Bois and several others are in my regular rotation.

  • I am an SSS fan girl. I have small bottles of Champagne de Bois and Equestrian so I suppose those are my most favorite, but i have travel sprays of Fig Tree and Jour Ensoleille and have sampled her entire line. Jour Ensoleille for me is a “summer summoner “! Thanks for the giveaway! I am in the US.

  • Ida’s poetry and prose takes readers along for a journey. Through the wooded forests of words, floating wistfully at times upon the gentle zepher of soliloquys. As for Lauries’ creations, there are none so near and dear to my heart as hers. I long for the briskness of winter so that I can sek solace in my favorite of the bunch, Winter Woods. In fact, I dream of a place where it is winter all year long so that I can relish its magnificance on each passing day.

  • Ernestine Puckey says:

I love Laurie’s perfumes and Ida”s review captures the beauty of them.I love amber perfumes and look forward to this one.

  • Anything about bee’s sets me abuzz! (Sorry!) I agree with Ida that Laurie’s scents are very wearable and quite affordable. This one sounds like something I would love. USA. Thanks for the review and draw.

  • I’m so grateful that you share my affection and enthusiasm for Laurie!
This perfume resonated with me; I will most certainly purchase some myself when it becomes readily available.
In times which test us all sorely – who among us would refuse the solace which such a pleasure provides?

Thank you, every one – for your support of our independent olfactory artists! <3

  • Thank you, Ida for this review.
Bee’s Bliss sounds fabulous. I like amber perfumes.
Unfortunatly I’ve never tested Sonoma Scent Studio’s perfumes.

  • Mmmm… honeyed murmurings! I have tried several ‘nectar’ perfumes this year and none have met my fancy, but I have hopes for this one with its addition of soft sweet fruits. I have not yet sampled any scents from SSS but Champagne du Bois holds appeal. I live in the US and thank you for the generous draw.

  • ElizabethRose says:

The picture of Alice in Wonderland, probably my favorite story of all-time, as well as this quote from Ida are so appealing! “What lingers beneath acts as both aromatic anchor and counterpoint to exuberant blossoms and luscious fruits”

My favorite from Sonoma Scent Studios is hard to choose as I love so many. I can not choose between Champagne de Bois and Amber Noir as my favorite! But I love so many and am waiting to order some things from the website.

For summertime, I always buy a cute dress 😉

Thanks for the giveaway Cafleurebon and Sonoma Scent!

  • I can almost smell the flowers as Alice and I wander through the garden together, thanks to Ida’s prose. I don’t have a favorite Sonoma Scent Studio’s fragrance. I live in a warm climate, so summoning up summer is fairly easy. Thanks for this draw. I live in the USA

  • What a lovely tribute to a beautiful cat! I love Champagne des Bois and Yin and Ylang. Would love to smell this new one. Thank you! In the USA.

  • thanks so much, Ida, for your beautiful review of Bee’s Bliss! I always love your poetic writing, rich with imagery and feeling. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! Good luck to everyone in the draw!

  • I live in the in the US and I loved the use of a cat pic in the review and Ida’s command of the English language that allows her to describe Bee’s Bliss so woll. Champagne de Bois and Equestrian are my favorite SS fragrances and to summon summertime in the winter I drink gin and tonics under a SAD light.

  • I love how she mentioned Alice in Wonderland!! I have never tried this line, but hope to for sure! Peach ice tea is what I do to summon summertime :))

  • I love the mention of Alice in Wonderland, Ida did such a beautiful job with this review.
My favorite Sonoma Scent is Forest Walk and sometimes I’ll wear a Grapefruit scent to summon Summer. Thanks for the generous giveaway, I live in the U.S.

  • What a beautiful review….dripping with juice and honeyed murmurings! I can feel the sun warming my skin!!

I adore Laurie’s fragrances. Jour Ensoleille is one of my favorites, although I own many and love them all. I have a feeling that Bee’s Bliss is going to be another favorite!

I summon summertime by sitting on my swing in the afternoon sunshine on any cold day in Pennsylvania!

  • I love how Ida evokes the image of the eternal summer of the perfume. I would love to be enveloped in this scent! I have not tried any of Sonoma Scent fragrances, but I have heard nothing but great things about them. I summon summer by smelling Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil in the grocery store in the dead of winter. Thanks for the chance! I’m in the US.

  • Ida has such a magical style of writing I was particularly taken by the talking flowers and the beautiful images. I have so many favorites including Opal, champagne et bois and yin and ylang. I love feminine florals and soft woods. I agree that Laurie is underrated and should have more exposure as she is a genius.

  • “Dripping with juice and honeyed murmurings” is my favorite. I am hard pressed to choose a favorite of SSS, but a few I love are To Dream, Vintage Rose, and Nostalgie. But really, Iove them all! I summon summertime by breaking out my down jacket and warm, cozy scents. It’s cold here in summer! ☺

  • Thank you for this review…lovely, poetic, evocative, vivid, all true but nothing quite captures it. For a moment I felt like I was walking in that imagined place with you, the gentle play of sunlight and shade, and summer dripping from every drop of light.

SSS has been on my radar but I don’t believe I’ve ever tried any. Winter Woods was at the top of the list.

To summon summer…hmmm…. well indoor plants and bright light help but honestly basking in heat indoors is not really summerific.
I think it most happens when I walk around (in a down coat with lots of coverage), when light hits ice-covered branches, when rays and shadows seem to stretch for miles…it is definitely winter but through it all the promise of spring.

  • Summer seems so far away, this sun-drenched review makes me feel wistful. My family suffered a great loss last week, my fiance’s mother passed away. I loved gardening with her, she loved flowers, and she always enjoyed perfume. Our house is still full of cut flowers from the wake and the smell is beautiful but so very sad. I could use a dose of Bee’s Bliss right now. With the timing of this release, and it’s dedication to a sweet kitty, I would always associate it with this time.

I love a lot of SSS scents, so it is very hard to choose just one. Tis the season for Winter Woods, but in the fall I love Champagne de Bois, and in the spring Lieu de Reves, and Nostalgie is so luxe on any evening… but I digress. I’m in the US, thank you for the draw.
