If you are planning to rouse yourself from your Turkey coma and brave the  retail insanity known as "Black Friday", you may need to fortify yourself with perfumes that will help keep you grounded and serene.  Here are my picks for three dark beauties that happen to be delicious in chilly November weather and not so loud they will antagonize your fellow shoppers. Let the madness begin!

Up first is Miller Harris’ gorgeous Rose en Noir, (composed by classically trained perfumer Lyn Harris), a gothic blossom with a sense of humor created for Liberty of London. A piquant raspberry note sparkles and smiles in the opening, juicy and sweet-tart as a dark purple-red rose opens, warmed and deepened by patchouli and tobacco. In the middle stages, violet leaf enhances the almost tactile feeling of velvet. The raspberry note sticks around, joined by a spike of black pepper, to tickle the rose every so often. The dry down is spicy, a bit green,  powdery but with that raspberry note smiling through – the perfect scent to keep you upbeat up when you want to smack the person who just grabbed the sweater you were after. Notes: raspberry, violet leaf Egypt, petit grain citronnier, rose Turkey, poivre noir, nutmeg Java, patchouli Indonesia, vetiver Haiti, tabac noir France, ambrette seed.

Do you crave an embery, woody scent with just the slightest touch of gourmand to block out the cold?  2014 Limited Edition Laudano Nero by Paulo Terenzi of Tiziana Terenzi will make you feel like chestnuts are roasting on an open fire near an incense burner and a bottle of aged cognac. The opening is deeply smoky, ashy, bittersweet with wormwood and incense. Next comes a plaintive note of old wood, the kind you might detect in an antiques shop. A cigar-like tobacco surfaces as amber and a spirituous cognac note warm up the composition, making it. Laudano Nero can make you feel like you are ensconced in an armchair, feet propped up by a smoldering fire, even as you brace against the chilly November gusts. Notes: wormwood, cognac, rosemary, tobacco, myrtle, amber, red rose, black locust honey, cedar, iris, sandalwood, ash, slate, cashmere musk, laurel, incense, camphor, agarwood, vetiver, oak, vanilla and labdanum.

Spicing up the sales is the new offering from Comme des Garcons, Blackpepper, (composed by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu) which opens with a perfectly pitched, realistic whiff of fresh-cracked peppercorns.

Before you think you’ve rolled in a spice rub, cedar sneaks up and jumps the pepper just as it reaches a pitch and settles it down a bit. Musk and tonka bean then start to smooth out the edges. The pepper and wood balance off each other perfectly, and the overall effect is gutsy but not overpowering –the kind of scent you want to splash on when you’re in a hurry to get to the latest iPhone.Notes: Madagascan Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Agarwood, Tonka Bean, Musk.

  • I love all the different notes of Rose En Noir, raspberry, tobacco, etc, it’s a very complex composition of notes that travel from sweet to spicy to floral it’s really a wow fragrance. If I won I would choose the GC from Twisted Lilly. I am not going out for black Friday this year and I live in the USA.

  • I am most intrigued by Rose en Noir since it is gothic perfume with fruity touches such as raspberry. My choice will be Twisted Lily card. I am in the US. I will not really be buying on Black Friday since I recently made major perfume purchases.

  • Valentine Girl says:

I love the smell of freshly cracked black pepper corns and the cedar wood notes balancing the piquant pepper in Comme des Garcons Blackpepper sounds most appealing to me. I would love the Twisted Lily gift card as my choice. I work for Amazon, so there is no escaping Black Friday or Cyber Monday, as they are our busiest work days of the year. It’s all hands on deck & I am on my way to work to spend the next 12 hours making other people’s Black Friday dreams come true. Let the games begin! USA resident

  • Very lovely review. I like the pictures also. I do not know yet that I will to face the Black Friday sales or not, but In my country the black Friday is fare not as big as in the USA. My choice would be the Rose en Noir. I live in Europe.

  • I loved the description of Laudano Nero. I love ashy and smoky fragrances, especially when I go out at night. Blackpepper sounds like a refreshing call to senses. I very much like the Comme des Garçons line.
I will not participate in Black Friday. I don’t like putting myself in situations like that.
I would choose the gift certificate. I live in the USA.

  • I’m not facing Black Friday. Thank you so much for this giveaway. I’m in the US. I liked the description of Rose en Noir. It sounds like my type of fragrance. I would love to win this or any of the other fragrances.

  • I briefly ventured out today, but not at an ungodly early hour. Very nice reviews. I like the idea of girding oneself with perfume to brave the crowds. I would love the Rose en Noir. I live in USA.

  • Ooh, Blackpepper sounds so good, Lauryn, thanks for the heads up! I’m gonna go check it out as a possible gift for my partner, it’s extra appropriate since he’s a chef! Thanks! If I win I would choose Rose en Noir. I’m in Canada – there are sales here today, but I’m not going to partake, because who needs the crowds?

  • All of Lauryn’s choices sound great, but I think Rose en Noir is the most fascinating (probably the fact that it is rare and disontinued has some influence on my choice) and has so beautiful notes – I love rose and tobacco! This is what I would like to win if I’m chosen. I think I deserve some little perfume pleasure, because I haven’t bought anything this Friday, even if there were so many temptations! I am trying to be reasonable – so far so good, but there is still Black Weekend ahead, so… who knows?

I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw! I hope to win Rose en Noir.

  • I do all my Black Friday shopping online. I tried going out once, big big mistake! Those are all great choices as well. Black Pepper by CdG sounds really good. I have to try that one a day. I live in Canada and thank you very much for the draw!

  • I love CDG and the description of blackpepper sounds great
Unfortunately I had to go the mall today with my son
    Exhausting
    Twisted lily gc please

  • I loved the variety of Lauryn’s picks especially I’d like the Laudano Nero. I don’t do Black Friday. I’d love the gift card. Thank you. I live in the USA.

  • These all sound like fragrantly unusual choices. I have always loved the sketch like appeal of the Miller Harris bottles. But that Black Pepper fragrance (my favorite spice!) sounds divine. I would choose the $30 Twisted Lily gift certificate as I have such a long wish list. Thanks for the reviws. USAcce7

  • I like Lauryn’s sense of humor and reality about the necessity of a perfume to keep one from smacking someone on Black Friday or anytime during the Festive season while shopping, although I’m sure that’s not a problem at Twisted Lily 🙂 I hope to visit the store one day, in the meantime thanks for the generous offer, and thanks Lauryn for your reviews. Laudano Nero sounds like the perfect post shopping scent accompanied by an actual cognac. I’m in the US.

  • I love black pepper note so I think Comme des Garcons fragrance is a must-try. Rose en Noir also sounds great!
This Black Friday I stayed at home because of a mild flu so there was only some online shopping, but only necessary things, no crazy shopping this year, or at least not yet.

I’d choose Rose en Noir vial. I live in Europe, thank you for the draw.

  • We do have a Black Friday here in Scandinavia, but I shop mostly online. I am not a big fan of shopping, but I bought some nice books and perfumes.

Laudano Nero sounds very exciting. There is nothing like tobacco and cognac on a cold day!

I would choose a sample of Rose en Noir. Thanks for the draw. I live in Norway.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the article & review. I loved the description of Laudano Nero & the feelings of the wearer. Never heard before that it is limited edition. I have a decant which is almost empty, so now will grab a full bottle at the earliest.
Lauryn’s choice Comme des Garcons Blackpepper intrigue me too & the notes are interesting. Many in our country don’t know about Black Friday but from the last few years the shop owners messages via sms on mobile wake up the public with a discount from 5 – 70% on every product.
Thanks for the generosity & I’ll choose a 3ml glass spray vial of Rose en Noir for the draw.

  • Rose en Noir sounds lovely rose and tobacco would be an incredible combination and I’m very curious about the nutmeg note in there.
Laudano Nero sounds positively cozy! It shares notes with so many of my fragrances, except that the wormwood makes it stand out for me. Blackpepper might not be right for me, on the other hand. I sometimes have trouble with pepper notes and musk is usually not my friend. I’d be curious to try it, though! I live in Canada, so would love the sample.

  • I love how different these perfumes are from each other! I hadn’t heard of Laudano Nero before, but it sounds so interesting – and seasonally appropriate! I didn’t really brave the Black Friday sales this year, except to buy tires for my car (not glamorous, but necessary) – fortunately the lines there were small!
I’m in the US and would love to win the Twisted Lily gift card – I already have lots of ideas about what to do with it! 😉
Thank you and thanks to Lauryn for suggesting some new scents to try!

  • This year I am trying not to spend to much and only bought a few clothes (online) which I would need to buy anyway. Sales in shopping malls were crazy and I am glad I managed to avoid the crowds.

I think Rose en Noir he most interesting fragrance from the three described because I love raspberry-rose combination (plus the ‘discontinued’ effect) and I would be happy to get the vial. Thanks for the reviews. I live in the EU.

  • What an interesting choice of fragrances! I am very curious about Laudano Nero and Tiziana Terenzi fragrances in general. Roasted chestnuts sound so delicious!

Thank you for the draw. I’d like to win Rose en Noir sample if I am chosen.

  • Pepper is my favorite note recently and I remember I tried Blackpepper by CdG some time ago, but I can’t remember it it was that realistic (cracked peppercorns sound great) and now I have to smell it again.
Great idea with “black” perfumes for Black Friday. My choice would be Rose en Noir. I must admit I did some shopping on Black Friday, but much less that a year ago.
I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.
