Perris Monte Carlo Eau de Parfums

The house of Perris Monte Carlo was born when the Executive Vice President of Houbigant, Gian Luca Perris, and Houbigant Creative Director Elizabetta Perris realized that much of the perfume industry was focusing on branding and marketing, and not on the perfume itself.  They established Perris Monte Carlo to bring perfumes to the market that are focused on classic, quality ingredients composed into elegant, luxurious fragrances.  When Editor in Chief Michelyn Camen posted live from Esxence 2016 last week, that   Perris Monte Carlo’s Rose de Taif Extrait  is one of Finalists in the Art and Olfaction Awards 2016, I knew that it was time to revisit this house with the extrait version of the orignal Rose Taif, composed by de facto in house Italian perfumer Luca Maffei in collaboration with Gian Luca and Elisabetta.

What would perfumery be without the rose?  The mother note, the note that all others lead themselves back to in some way or another – without the rose in all of its glory, there would exist no gate into that secret garden where all of the perfumed world resides. And yet, rose is also one of the first notes that some fragrance aficionados write off almost immediately as it is ubiquitous in perfumes.  But without knowing this ingredient in a scent, you cannot truly appreciate the world of perfume.  It would be similar to trying to learn to speak English without vowels.

And for me, rose scents are the final word on whether a house or perfumer can be trusted.  A truly great rose perfume is an absolute statement of purpose and dedication to the art and craft of perfumery.  And readers, I must say I may have come across one of these, if not THE best rose perfume I’ve ever tried,  Perris Monte Carlo’s Rose de Taif Extrait.

Rose de Taif Extrait shows itself wonderfully in both the technical mastery and quality of its ingredients.  It begins with a dewy and uplifting combination of lemon, geranium and nutmeg, and the immediate sensation is the underside of a rose petal – that slightly green and shy elegance that all roses possess.  The opening of Rose de Taif is quiet, graceful and bright – this is an Extrait whose powerful statement comes not from percentages of perfume oil but from how well the ideas inherent in its composition are expressed.  Perfumer Luca Maffei shows us not a rose perfume, but the rose itself.

The heart note is pure Rose de Taif – an Arabian essential oil from the city of Taif in Saudi Arabia, whose terroir is quite distinct and  is one of the finest places for roses to be cultivated.  And the heart of this fragrance immediately informs the wearer of this.  The nutmeg undertones in the top notes are replaced by a dusky, spicy, but still very sheer and light darker rose.  The heart of Rose de Taif is a rose of heat and shadow, not of vanity mirrors and powdered compacts.  The choice of nutmeg spice at the start is an excellent one to lead the nose into this unexpected floral turn.

The drydown is simple and complimentary to the fragrance – Damask rose absolute and musk.  Yet the use of absolutes makes the ending of Rose de Taif as complex and engaging as the opening was light and entrancing.  Even as the scent leaves the skin it does so in waves and layers (well over 5 hours from application on mine). Rose de Taif has profound longevity and a very elegant, restrained sillage for an Extrait. This perfume can easily be worn by both men and women.

.Each note is deeply felt in this fragrance, but weighted as lightly as helium throughout.   Rose de Taif extrait is not just a fragrance; it is the summoning of a shimmering, radiant and ghostly rose to inhabit the skin, and should not be missed.  This is extraordinary perfumery from a dedicated perfumer and passionate house.

Notes:  lemon, nutmeg, geranium, Rose de Taif, Damask rose absolute, musk.

  • Sounds intriguing! I love Ambre Gris from this line and also I love a good rose fragrance. Thank you for the chance!
    I live in Italy,

  • I’ve tried a few rose scents but haven’t found anything that feels completely me yet, so I’d love to be able to try this one. Not tried any Perris Monte either. Would love the chance to try this scent!

  • Wonderful review. I have never tried any rose centric perfume, but I always wanted to try and own one. I very love the roses in my garden, and I would very like a rose perfume. A beautiful one, like this. I have never had a chance to try any of Perris Monte Carlo perfumes, but from the review this one sounds fabulous. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

I have been exploring roses again lately and am finding them a joy to wear. I haven’t tried any Perris Monte Carlo scents but would love to try this one. Especially with the Damask Rose absolute. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Wow, this sounds really great. I love that its ever-present without being overwhelming (or so it sounds). I’ve never tried anything from this line, in fact I’m not even sure I’ve heard of it, but this rose fragrance sounds like it could be the real deal. I am particularly intrigued by the nutmeg note. Thanks so much for this fabulous draw, I’m in the US!

I don’t really have any rose fragrances in my collection (none where the prominent note is Rose). I really like the description of this one and the fact that it can be worn by either a man or a woman. I am fond of the rose fragrance by Le Labo. I only have it in the body lotion but love that it is unisex. It layers well under many different floral fragrances.

I’ve never tried any Perris Monte Carlo perfumes. I would be ecstatic to win this draw for this gorgeous scent!

  • I love roses thus perfumes that have roses as their primary ingredient. However by reading this amazing review and by being informed about the way this perfume unfolds it’s beauty yes oh yes !!! I would be more than thrilled….it would be an honor to win and wear such a Beauty on my skin!!!!
I believe that Mr. Gian Luca Perris and Mrs. Elizabetta Perris know about the Art of Perfume and prove this by creating this amazing rose perfume
Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to experience any Perris Monte Carlo perfumes.

Thank you for the lovely review and so generous draw!

  • The combination of nutmeg and rose sounds kind of perfect! I have not tried any perfumes from Perris Monte Carlo perfumes yet, and I am in the US. Thank you!

I have tried Rose de Taif and I find it too be of an opulent splendour! It is really “flowery”, rich, no sweetness, like a soliflore. Perfect for a rose lover!

I live in EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love wearing rose perfumes, I am not familiar with the Rose de Taif, although this articles sings its praise and I trust Luca Maffei given his work with the company.
I would love to win this fragrance, I live in the EU. Thank you for the generous draw.

  • Ooooh, I’ve been wanting to try this for a while because of others’ reviews of this perfume on the message boards. I’ve never tried any of the Perris Monte Carlo perfumes, but they sound so great.

I love rose fragrances and am always on the hunt for the perfect one. The elegant, lightweight character of RdT described in this review makes it sound perfect 🙂 Thanks for the draw! I live in the EU.

Rose is the Queen of perfumes and I would love to have this. It sounds gorgeous, especially the heart which is a rose of heat and shadow, not of vanity mirrors and powdered compacts. I also think the Addition with nutmeg is very interesting.

I haven’t tried Perris Monte carlo yet but I would love to.

I live in the EU, thanks for the draw!

  • I like rose fragrances and this one intrigues me. Unfortunately i have not tried any from this line. I live in the EU. Thanks for this draw.

  • What a beautiful review. I have yet to find my perfect roses
I especially loved that this not just a perfume but the Rose itself. I wasn’t aware that Taif was a place in Saudi Arabia
I have not tried Perris Monte Carlo but I see that Luckyscent has it so I will order samples

The artwork was gorgeous especially Sarah Brightman

I recently received a sample of Rose Taif which someone sent me with a swapped bottle. it is really deep and true tribute to rose and now this extrait stuff. I agree with the review it is not as much a perfume as it is the flower itself. I also like the bottle of extrait, esp. because it allows us to see the beautiful perfume inside. My favorite was Bois d’Oud but I think the edp decant of Rose De Taif makes this a contender for my favorite from the line. Thanks a lot for the generous draw. I am in the US

  • I like it that they said the ending is just as interesting as the opening. I have not tried any Perris Monte Carlo perfumes but this one sounds very interesting. Thanks I’m in the US

  • I did not yet have the opportunity to try anything from Perris Monte Carlo, but I adore rose fragrances. It was where my love for perfume started and is still a big part of my collection. Rose de Taif Extrait sounds gorgeous. (Sigh) true rose is so beautiful. By the way, my avatar is a taif rose. I live in EU. Thanks for this awesome draw!

Just reading that part is more than enough to want to get this one. Yes rose is the note that started it all, my wife loves the perfume version , this one sounds fantastic.
Thanks for another great review and draw.

  • The timing of this article is perfect! I am currently in my rose period. It seems that as I go from winter through spring/summer I find myself drawn to rose fragrances. This Rose de Taif extrait seems to me to hit it just right. I like the description of radiant and ghostly as well as how it seemed to leave the skin in layers (and lasting such a long time). The heart note is also what draws me to this. I am always seeking the perfect oil in a fragrance – I may have found it! The bottle is also quite taking. I love this. Thank you. I’m in US and registered.

  • I have a decau of Imperial Oud and would love to try this one also! I live in the US.

  • I haven’t tried anything from Perris Monte Carlo yet and Rose de Taif sounds like the perfect introduction! I haven’t had great luck with rose fragrances in the past, but I am intrigued by the Rose de Taif and nutmeg combination. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I haven’t the opportunity to try any perfume of this house,so it will be the first time.I think that Rose de Taif is a perfume for the spring for both women and men.I haven’t tried any rose perfume yet but i really want to see how complex and suitable is this for men.I live in Europe.
    Ty for the draw!!!

  • Great review. I have sampling same fragrance from Perris Montecarlo and my favorite is Ambre Gris, this fragrance is absolutely stunning. I didn’t tried Rose de Taif yet but this fragrance sounds to be very nice but I believe that my sister will love it much more than I because she loves rose base fragrances.

  • Gregorysop says:

So I typically will go to fragrantica after each fragrance I read here that interests me to further my research into them, this one although it says 2015 has little to nothing about it, which intrigues me greatly since you had so many great things to say about it. Rose is typically a scent that I would imagine being in one of my wife’s perfumes, so I am dying to see how well it can be blended so that it will make an excellent men’s scent. Thanks for the review.

  • I have just smelled Bois d’Oud of Perris de Montecarlo and I would like to know how this Rose the Taif is like because rose is one of my favourite ingredients anf if there is Rose de Taif with nutmeg and geranium…it is really appealing to me!
    I¡m in the EU.
    Thanks for the review!

  • I have never tried any fragrances from this house, but this one sounds incredible! I love rose in scents, and being mixed with lemon and nutmeg will be a totally killer combo. Thanks for the draw and I’m in Canada

  • Robert H. says:

Well…confirmed rose ho’ that I am, to me there’s very little that’s better than a beautifully constructed rose perfume! I love the Perris line, my favorite is Ylang Nosy Be, an authentic tropical bit of magic that takes me right back to days in the Caribbean. I’m in the USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love rose and rose taif is one I’ve heard of…I know it’s supposed to be a very high quality rose. I would love to try the perfume based on this rose. USA>Thank you

  • Most of the Rose fragrances don’t last for me. Hearing a 5 hour longevity for this fragrance sounds very promising. I have never tried anything from this house. Thanks from the US

  • Le Parfum says:

I absolutely adore rose based fragrances, but I never have tried rose taif so I would love to try it seems to be very nice fragrance. To be sincerely I never tried any from this brand.

  • What a beautiful crafted bottle. I am a fan of rose scents, although I haven’t tried too many. I have heard of this house before definitely, have not had the chance to smell anything from them though. Overall, this sounds like a wonderful release and I’d love to win it!
