New Perfume Review: Etat Libre D’Orange Cologne + The Shock of Non-Subversion Draw

Ever since my father brought me my first bottle of 4711 to keep in the fridge to splash on during hot Los Angeles summers, I have loved cologne. By cologne I refer to the traditional refreshing scent that is largely citrus-based and cooling, and a genre all its own. Variations have been around for centuries, and it has been used to dab on with fine hankies in royal courts or spray with abandon in more modern times. One thing people complain about with a traditional cologne is longevity, but they are not made to last all day; they are made to cool you down, and refresh your skin and your spirits when you are overheated or tired.  I’m very glad that there is a resurgence of cologne on the market, and one of the best is Cologne by Etat Libre D’Orange.

When I smelled Cologne at Esxence, I said, “oooh, that’s nice!” Founder and Creative Director Etienne de Swardt then revealed to me that the tagline for this perfume is “A Nice Scent”. Etat Libre D’Orange is well-known for creating great perfumes with with aromas and packaging that are decadent and shocking, referencing bodily fluids, shady occupations, and general irreverence. In some ways, that they have released a perfume that is a classic cologne is in itself a bit subversive, because it’s such a spin in a different direction.

"Splashing Fun Time" by Alex Goh Chun Seong

Over the last couple of days, the weather has been perfect for wearing Cologne, and I sprayed lavishly. Cologne opens up with a nice sharp bite of bergamot and tangy blood orange. A bit of sweet orange blossom billows up from my skin, tempering the juicy citruses. As the perfume wears, I detect a hint of animal from the leather note, which seems to be a little bit of a testament to the traditional Etat Libre perfume fare. The longevity is typical for a cologne; I can smell it a bit after a few hours, but the real joy is in reapplying through the day to experience that eye-opening, reviving burst of juicy goodness. I recommend Cologne to anyone who enjoys an uplifting scent that is not necessarily totally clean. I will be adding a bottle to my collection, since weather forecasts say the West Coast is going to fry this summer.

Notes: Blood Orange, Bergamot, Orange Blossom, Jasmine, Leather, Musk

I received my samples courtesy of Etienne de Swardt and Etat Libre D’Orange. Cologne is currently available on the Etat Libre D’Orange website and will be coming to stockists in the near future. 100 Ml for 100€.

  • I love cologne in hot weather for its freshness and subliminal cooling effect. My favorite ELDO is far from a cologne, it’s Bijou Romantique. I live in the USA

My favorite ELDO is Fat Electrician.

I love good traditional cologne. I grew up with 4711. And I love blood orange! Ooh. I’ve been excited about this scent for a while, but haven’t tried it yet. Sounds fabulous for summer! I live in Maine, USA.

  • Sfsassyjen says:

Oh I love ELDO. My overall favorite like. It’s hard to pick a favorite scent. Maybe Jasmine and cigarettes. Cologne sounds like a great scent for summer. I am excited to try that one too. I am in the USA.

  • Very nice! A cologne for those of us who like a not totally clean, but still light, summery & refreshing vibe. And what could be bad with blood orange, jasmine & leather? Ahhh, and my favorite ELDO … Like This.

  • I’m a big fan of ELdO and of eaux de Cologne. My favorite is probably still the quirky and animalic Vierges et Toreros. I’m curious about this because of the hint of leather that the notes list mentions.

I live in the US. Thanks for the draw opp and the review.

All the different orange notes make this sound fantastic. My favorite ELDO is Fat Electrician.

  • I have not tried any other perfumes from ELDO, but I have several on my “to try” list! I love the sound of the combination of citrus and animalic, and I do have room for a summer cologne in my growing perfume collection 🙂 I am in the US, thank yoU!

  • Exciting draw! Thank you to Cafleurebon and Etat Libre D’Orange. I’d have to agree with the poster above me, Rossy de Palma (Eau de Protection) is my favorite and I love how long it lasts. I also really enjoy Bijou Romantique. What most draws me in about Cologne is the desire to see Etat Libre d’Orange’s take on “nice” and “fresh.” I’m so curious!

  • I like the traditional citrus notes in colognes and I love to reapply them on hot days. As for ELDO, I’m partial to
Fils De Dieu. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

My favorite ELDO is Fat Electrician, I love colognes since the weather where I live is always on the hot side but it looks more interesting that it has a little leather and animalic note since it is an ELDO and it has that little twist. I live in the US. Thanks for another cool draw.

  • This sounds fantastic and appeals to me as I have little tolerance for the HEAT. I can imagine the cooling effect of this cologne.
My favorite ELDO is Fils De Dieu.
    I’m in the U.S.

  • One of my favorite houses. I’m anxious to see what, in their eyes, is Cologne, a nice scent! And the weather is getting warm, so I’d love to keep that Cologne in my fridge!

My favorite ElDOs include Like This (wearing now), Putain de Palaces, and most beloved is Dangerous Complicity. In the US. Thanks!!

    I’m in Europe.

  • My favorite E.L.D’O. is Putain de Palaces.
I am excited to try Cologne, I like Colognes and use them lavishly in the summer, but, hey! how could be a Cologne from this house? It sounds interesting, with a little twist of leather and animalic notes…
    I am from the E.U.
    Thank you.

  • Hi 🙂

My favourite ELDO fragrance are Divin Enfant for its musky sweetness, and Fils de Dieu for its delicious rice note.

The thing I like about colognes is the that their opening notes instantly make me smile, which is the case with Eau d’Orange Verte or Bigarade Concentree. Instant smile in a bottle. 😀

I also like the Mugler Cologne very much, for its soapy clean facet.

    I’m in Europe.

  • My favourite Etat Libre D’Orange would be the fuzzy warmth of Like this (nothing to do with my fascination for Tilda Swinton…)
It is true that sometimes a nice scent is just what to need… No strategising, no innuendos, just smelling good. I expect this Cologne from this never disappointing House to deliver.. I am in Europe.
Thank you for this generous draw.

  • Ifi Genial says:

Since I live in Greece a typically Meditteranean country with very high temperatures during summer I love spraying myself with colognes exactly for the reason that dearest Tama mentioned in her lovely review : “colognes… they are made to cool you down, and refresh your skin and your spirits when you are overheated or tired ….. I recommend Cologne to anyone who enjoys an uplifting scent that is not necessarily totally clean ”
🙂 exactly that’s the reason that I adore colognes especially in the summer time.
I have no favorite Etat Libre D’Orange perfume since I never had the chance to experience one, hope to have the chance in the near future 🙂
I live in EU (Greece) and I thank you both for this lovely review and draw.

  • My favorite ELDO is Fat Electrician. Cologne appeals to me because I’m sure I can reapply it all day. US ty

  • My favorite ELDO scent is Like This but I haven’t been wearing it lately as it’s more of a Fall/Winter scent to me. I would love to try Cologne for the summer months and the bergamot/orange blossom combo sounds pretty and refreshing. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

I’m a big fan of colognes from the high (Chanel) to the low (Turkish lemon cologne). I live where it’s hot and getting hotter so colognes are a great scent choice. I would love to try ELd’O take on cologne. I live in the US.

  • rodelinda says:

My favorite ELDO is Putain des Palaces. Cologne sounds interesting because it has more than just the typical “refreshing” notes you normally find in a cologne. I’m in the US. Thanks for the drawing!

  • Etat Libre d’Orange’s Sécrétions Magnifiques is my absolute favorite! I like the idea of “Etat Libre d’Orange Cologne, because I have been to the dark side of desire, and now I want to come clean. I wish to repent, and what better way to come clean, than with “Cologne” a nice cologne, and knowing Etat Libre d’Orange I won’t have to get “too” clean… and I like that.

I live in the United States of America.

  • Jennifer B says:

I like Jasmin et Cigarette and looking forward to sampling more in the future. I live in the US. Thanks!

  • I’m looking forward to sampling this. I only have one ELDO – Bijou Romantique, but really like it.

Cologne makes me think of summer and the mediterrannean and sunshine. My favourite ELDO is probably Like This (but not for wearing in the summer). I live in the EU.

  • My favorite ELDO is either Like This or Rossy de Palma. I’m intrigued by this scent because it’s so seemingly out of character for this house! I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • ringthing says:

Colognes are wonderful in the summer and this one sounds interesting with the leather notes. My favorite ELDO is Antiheros, I’m in the US, thanks for the review and the draw!

  • Hey thanks for the draw! I live in Canada, and my favourite ELO, that I know of, is Jasmine et Cigarette. What appeals to me about ELO is their love of creating wacky yet lovely concoctions. Like J&C. 🙂

  • I love the freshness of cologne on a hot day.My favorite from the line is Rien.I’m in the US.Thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite ELDO is Rossy de Palma. I want to get this cologne because I love the simplicity of the cologne but the production of ELDO is just intriguing to me.
    USA Thanks

  • ELdO is one of the companies responsible for me coming to love the niche. As a budding perfumephiliac I was inspired by how unseen artists would make works of art, not only with olfactory means but also visual and literary. Every single product was a complete work, one that you might not choose to wear (like secretions) but still appreciate… and appreciate the brand that produced it.

That said I was somewhat saddened by reading the recent interview of mr de Swardt where he tried to justify a turn in ELdO orientation. First it was the change in style of packaging in an attempt to look more “serious” in the eyes of middle eastern clientele. Now they make a “nice” scent, light and fleeting. I am not sure I like where this is going. I do love cologne as a genre, it is very agreeable with me when I get in a minimalist mood, but when I am in this mood I don’t turn to ELdO for support. I will certainly try this and I am almost certain it is going to be good for what it is. I just hope it doesn’t signal the loss of character the brand that is responsible for my beloved Rien or Fat Electrician.

    EU

  • I love wearing cologne because of how it reacts on hot and humid summer days.
My fave ELDO is Delicious Closet Queen. 🙂
    US

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

My favorite ELdO scent is Rien. In the summer I like to wear colognes as a lighter, less concentrated interpretation of a perfume. I live in the USA.

  • I love fragrances that start off with a cool blast of citrus. It us so refreshing. Since this one isn’t the typical cologne, by throwing in a bit of leather in the base for good measure, it will surely go on my to try list! I don’t have a favorite ELDO yet, as I have not tried many of them to make that determination at this particular time. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • ELdO is one of my favorite perfume houses. Jasmin et Cigarette and Rossy de Palma are both staples in my collection. I am intrigued by a Cologne by Etat Libre D’Orange, because somewhwre there has to be a little twist in it

  • Jean Holman says:

This is such an exciting time in the perfume world! Congratulations to ELdO for being one of the innovators! I look forward to each of their fragrance creations – original, concept driven and sure to make their mark in the industry!

  • My favorite ELDO frgrance is Like This. It’s so comforting and easy to wear, and yet different enough from the usual gourmand perfumes.

What intrigues me about Cologne is its leather note. It would be interesting to see how it plays against the bright and juicy citrus opening.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’ve never knowingly tried leather in a cologne so that appeals to me. My favourite ELDO is Vraie Blonde. I live in the UK

  • carole macleod says:

I have not had the chance to try this line yet, but I am totally intrigued by Jasmin et Cigarette. i love some Colognes: 4711, Eau d’Hadrien, Guerlain’s imperiale, and Patou’s Eau de Patou. Colognes can be difficult: they are fleeting by nature, and some can be sharp. But luckily my skin holds scent really well. i live in NS, Canada.
    Sincerely,

    Carole

  • This appeals to me because I think it will be perfect during the hot summer months, but different enough not to be boring. My fave ELdO is Rien. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the U.S.

  • Definitely fond of Fat Electrician!! I love leather in the fall and love my colognes in the cooler months! I live in the U.S. (and am a little concerned about the hot Pac NW summer! Bummer!)

  • I liked Fat Electrician, but have a feeling that this would be my favorite ELdO. I love colognes, too, and the combo of notes in this one sounds beautiful!

  • I like ELDO for its originality, even I don’t always like all the parfums of this house, but some are amazing! (Jasmin et cigarette, La fin du monde)….
I would like to try this one in the summer. I’m in Europe.

  • My favorite etat libre d’orange tilda Swindon like this
I am looking forward to trying their cologne as it is so unexpected
    I loved the review

  • My favorite from Etat Libre D’Orange is Jasmin et Cigarette. I love that jasmine!
I so enjoy your reaction, Tama–“oooh, that’s nice’. I love the the thought of a cologne that’s not totally clean.
Thanks for the wonderful review, and draw.
