New Niche Fragrance Review: Parfums de Nicolai Eau sOleil: The Princess of Neroli + A Royal Bottle Draw

Eau sOleil Header CaFleureBon

Patricia de Nicolai is one of those perfumers that produces a line that many perfumistas feel is not appreciated enough. Ms. Nicolai quietly releases a perfume every now and then, sneaking it in under the radar. Suddenly we are all talking about it, longing for it, and seeking it out. Her fragrances are mostly found online, and it’s not always easy to get to try them. I have the great fortune of receiving a sample of the newest release from Parfums de Nicolai, Eau sOleil.

Eau sOleil 1 CaFleureBon

Anne-Marie de la Tremoille by Nicolas Largilliere

Orange blossom and neroli perfumes always make me sit up and take notice. Eau sOleil is a tribute to Anne-Marie de la Tremoille, who started the use of bitter orange oil as a personal scent while she was the princess of Nerola, Italy. That essence came to be known as neroli.

Eau sOleil 2 CaFleureBon

Spring Blossom by Delilah Smith

I have been searching for a long time for a certain kind of orange blossom fragrance; one that is cool and green, yet still wildly floral, that will bloom like mad in the heat and take me to a place beneath the shady boughs of orange trees blooming in the sun. This is really close. At first blush, it is a bit more stemmy than I want, a little too green, but it is lovely just the same. The waft is where the flowers really sing; close to my skin is where the stems and leaves reign. There is room in my heart for an assortment of orange blossoms and nerolis, and I could feel Eau sOleil squeezing herself in.

Eau sOleil 3 CaFleureBon

Gardening by Victor Gabriel Gilbert

The sun came out while I was wearing this perfume, and I took the opportunity to do some gardening. As I worked, and as the perfume warmed, the greenery became subdued, and the flowers bloomed more brightly before softening into a whisper of aroma. The air around my body felt like it was sweeter because of the sun shining on it, rather than because I was wearing a dab of scent. This lovely fragrance makes me feel like a part of the natural world. What could be better?

Notes: lemon, mandarin, bergamot, petitgrain, thyme, wormwood, jasmine, ylang-ylang, neroli, patchouli, and soft musk. (per Parfum1)

  • My favourite de Nicolai was actually a room spray: her Jacinthe, which smelled uncannily liked purple hyacinth in full bloom. I was despondent they discontinued it. I wish I could convince them to bring it back!

  • Someotherspring says:

  • I’m a US Nicolai fan, too. I don’t have a big collection of full bottles, but Vie De Chateau is one that I do own. I find it a terrific summer scent. Hay and tobacco are just perfect on hot humid days! Thanks for reminding me of PdN. . .I hadn’t looked at the line in quite some time and there’s so much new I’d love to try, including the Eau sOleil. Thanks for yet another great giveaway!

BTW, I love reading these entries. They make poetry out of scent, and they’re a pleasure to experience, too.

Now I’d love to win this one. 🙂
I live in the U.S. Thank you.

  • This would be the PdN for me. Orange Blossom, Petti Grain and Neroli are magic words to me, my favorite scent. I am ALWAYS transported (even if just for a couple of seconds) to riding in the back seat of my grandmother’s sea foam blue car, with the windows down, past the orange groves in Florida. I used to tell her, “This is my favorite smell”. One day we stopped at one of the roadside orange stands that also sold ‘orange souvenirs’ and she bought me a tiny little vial of orange blossom perfume. I took that thing with me everywhere, opening it up to sniff it, even to bed.
I’m 48 yrs old, these trips in my grandmother’s car were some 40+ years ago. Just this morning I sprayed on some Alien and was in that warm, sunny car. No matter what the other notes; FIRST, I smell orange blossom 🙂

  • I love orange blossom perfumes, and there can never be too many! There have been many new, good entries in the last couple of years so why not one more? PDN La Temps DE Une Ete is a favorite for me. It starts out so green and then morphs into something unusual and mysterious on my skin. I think PDN has several good perfumes and goes a bit unrecognized in the perfume world. I live in the US.

  • I’ve been wanting to try this one! My favorite thus far has been Vie de Chateau. I am located in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • susie frankel says:

Eau sOliel is tempting me from the description. It’s the only one I have reference to…so that’s a great start – should I get lucky. Orange blossoms have been a favorite scent and be it California or Italy, I’m there.
    USA.

  • This sounds lovely and something I would be thrilled to win. By the description of the notes I would like Odalisque. I think I need to order a sampler set from this line. I live in the U.S.

  • My favorite Parfum de Nicolai is Musc Intense. I’m a neroli fanatic and would be thrilled to win! Thanks so much for the draw.

  • My favorite so far has been Sacrebleu! I live in the US. Thanks for the draw and lovely review!

  • I don’t own and never tried any Parfums de Nicolai collection. But I have been wanting to try their classic I heard is New York.

    Thanks USA

  • I’ve always wanted to try Mimosaique — I love a yellow floral, especially spiced up with anise

  • I live in the US and my favorites are L’Eau Mixte for summer and Sacrebleu for winter. Such a high quality and affordable line! Thanks for the draw.

  • I chose Number One Intense on the day my daughter Emily and I went shopping for her wedding dress

  • Igor Kipnis says:

I’ve always been curious about Nicolas perfumes. L`Eau à la Folie has been on my list to try. Great draw, I’m liking the notes sOleil too
