Guillaume Coutou's Les Chevaux de Marly
Parfums de Marly is a Contemporary French luxury house that draws inspiration from the past, specifically the grandeur of 18th Century with the theme of equestrian and dressage transformed into perfume. Each fragrance is named for a horse or carries the leimotif of the noble animal, and the many breeds throughout the world. I first learned of the brand from Nasreen of Parfumerie Nasreen, then experienced the collection at The Elements Showcase in NYC in 2013; I fell hard for the feminine Safanad (Fabrice Pellegrin) with its beautiful blend of orange blossom and pear.

Most of the perfumes are shared and one of the latest, Layton, certainly can be worn by women as well as men. Creative Director Johann Sprecher started the House in 2009 and CaFleureBon was one of the first to write about the brand, with Herod (Olivier Pescheux) being a perfumista favourite with its strong tobacco and vanilla notes. M. Sprecher has commissioned some of the best perfumers in the world to fulfill his vision including Natalie Lorson, Jacques Flori, and Siddonie Lancesseur and his stable of scents now number 19.

Layton as interpreted by its creator: "I imagine cascades of aromatic scents bursting from the royal fountains while racehorses in dazzling dresses set out to shine during the equestrian exploits of the age" Hamid Merati-Kashani of Firmenich.
