“Living stone, the illumination of incense – heaven, a piercing word which reveals. A perfume of fire, of silence, and of the Soul.” ~ Olivier Durbano

The World Rider-Waite deck, Tarot of Marseille Wikipedia

The Tarot, that esteemed tool of divination –  is completed by the number 21; it corresponds to The World, the final (trump) card in the Major Arcana. How timely then is artisanal perfumer Olivier Durbano’s latest offering, Deus ex Petra 21 – as we find ourselves in a turbulent era of great flux and the commencement of a new year, as viewed by the ancients in both Judaism and agricultural societies. In olden times, the harvest signified the closing of one chapter and the beginning of a whole new life cycle. We stand at the threshold of understanding, fulfillment, integration, completion, and a sense of wholeness: new opportunities to be realized await us.

Sacred intention infuses all of Olivier’s work – be it in precious stone, fabric, or fragrance. As flame reduces physical matter to ash, purifying and removing all dross – so Olivier Durbano Deus x Petra 21 reveals the rekindled embers of the spirit when the stone speaks, after we have been distilled to our very essence. The perfumer seeks to awaken the Divine in us, employing the wisdom of the I Ching, the New Testament, and the wisdom of old. In Deus x Petra 21, this desire manifests itself through the physical world and cuts like a knife through the extraneous via incense: per fumum.

I have delighted in many of the perfumer’s fragrances over the years – some upon initial encounter, and others which have required me to take my time in making their acquaintance. Deus x Petra 21 and I connected immediately upon contact, an experience which has become increasingly infrequent. The moment the jus was released from its flacon and landed upon flesh, I knew that I was in the presence of something extraordinary: the quivering of the senses; a heightened awareness, the direct affirmation. In fact, I continued to reapply this perfume and wore it for several successive days, as I sought to wrest its particular significance (aside from its beauty).

Olivier Durbano Deus ex Petra 21 opens with the happy marriage of clove and olibanum, swiftly ensued by the intensely herbal tones of immortelle and clary sage’s brilliantly mordant ability to open the third eye. The verdancy of fig serves to amplify the fragrance’s enigmatic sweet herbalcy-underlined-with-smoke leitmotiv. These are accompanied by the jammy aspect of fir balsam, which imparts a fruity sweetness; vetiver’s smoldering grassiness contributes yet more layers of honeyed green to Deus x Petra 21’s spicy/incense/vegetal/hay-inflected persona. The inclusion of ambergris feels intuitive, in that some facets of clary sage are redolent of it (in fact, sclareol has been cited as a precursor to Ambrox-related aromas), and musk ensures a lasting trail which is both tenacious and comforting.

There exist innumerable incenses in today’s perfumed pantheon. You may very well ask: do we need another? To which my answer is an unqualified Yes. The singularity and original character of Deus ex Petra 21 recalls the early halcyon Incense days of Comme des Garcons and master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour’s marvelously ingenious fragrances: unique, heartfelt, and completely their own being. There is something otherworldly about a perfume which has engaged the perfumer, body and soul: a veracity which cannot be duplicated. Again, here is one of 2025’s most noteworthy fragrances.

N.B. It’s interesting to note that my spouse (who has experienced an awful lot of perfume since 1982, and wears precious little of it) was intrigued right off the bat and wanted to wear Deus x Petra as soon as I sprayed it. He’s not a ‘perfume person’ in the sense that we are – but he was drawn like moth to flame, and having met Olivier in Florence, he believes in both the man and his work. For me, that speaks volumes.

Notes: olibanum absolute, clove, immortelle, clary sage, fig, olibanum resinoid, vetiver, balsam fir, ambergris, musk

Flacon was generously gifted by the perfumer – many thanks! My nose is my own…

  • Ida’s review vividly captures the spiritual depth and unique composition of Olivier Durbano’s Deus x Petra 21, highlighting its evocative blend of incense, clove, and herbal notes that awaken the senses. The connection to Tarot’s “The World” card and the perfume’s ability to distill the essence of the spirit resonated with me. I live in Poland, EU, I have no prior experience with Olivier Durbano fragrances.

  • Deus Ex Petra sounds like a very artistic, spiritual, artisanal and extraordinary creation. I have no experience with this brand yet, but I am very interested after reading Ida’s review. Hugs from EU.

  • this perfume intrigues me so much. I love incense fragrances, even more when incense is not just the liturgical one, but mixes with green notes to compose an herbaceous mysterious essence. By reading Ida’s review, I tried to figure out how this perfume could smell, and I imagined myself walking through a forest, ending up arriving to an abandoned church, that preserves inside of it the smell of ancient rituals.
I really hope to try this experience.
    cheers from Italy.

  • WeAreScentient says:

Oh wow this sounds stunning! I love how Ida described it and that fig and incense combo sounds amazing! Not yet smelled any Olivier Durbano but I’d love to. as always I’m bubblin in Dublin

  • I would love to wear this perfume, I love incense, my favorites are Avignon and Bois d’encens. What I like about Ida’s article is when she says: “The singularity and original character of Deus x Petra 21 recalls the early halcyon Incense days of Comme des Garcons and master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour’s marvelously ingenious fragrances: unique, heartfelt, and completely their own being.” I have never worn an Olivier Durbano creation. I live in France, EU.

  • Deus ex Petra sounds like a profoundly spiritual, meditative perfume. With notes like olibanum, clary sage and immortelle, it seems to be able to both ground and lift. To empower both the root and the crown. The fact Ida’s “less of a perfume person” husband was immediately intrigued, intrigues me! Imagine the effect on a perfume aficionado!
    From the EU.

  • I am very eager to try Olivier Durbano’s perfumes since I have read about them in the Turin-Sanchez books, but I have not yet managed, I hope this might be the occasion! The comparison with CdG’s Incense perfume series definitely caught my attention, as well as the reaction of Ida’s husband… 😉 I’m very curious!
    Greetings from Germany!

  • I really like immortelle and I try to test perfumes that have this flower. I feel like it does not get the love it deserves in the world of fragrances, so I am always on the lookout for creations having immortelle. Thanks! EU

  • I enjoyed the part where it was pointed why we need one more incense fragrance a d why it’s different that the rest. I live in Greece, EU. My favorite of the fragrances is “ARAM”.

  • I love a complex incense fragrance and Deus ex Petra 21 is very compelling. I’m drawn to the unusual green and balsamic combination of fig and fir balsam in the heart, especially over smoky and grassy vetiver. “The singularity and original character of Deus ex Petra 21 recalls the early halcyon Incense days of Comme des Garcons and master perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour’s marvelously ingenious fragrances: unique, heartfelt, and completely their own being.” High praise, especially from Ida, who’s tried it all. I’d love to try this. (And Olivier Durbano’s work in general.)

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Reveals the rekindled embers of the spirit when the stone speaks – is my favourite part of the review. Oliver Durbano makes arcane, spirit uplifting and possibly history evoking perfumes. Incense could be his masterpeace and Petra as inspiration just very befitting. I live in the EU.

  • Thanks for the insightful feature! Deus ex Petra 21 feels like a refined ritual in scent—clove and olibanum ignite the flame, and then herbal immortelle, clary sage, and fig weave their smoke-kissed green whispers. Fir balsam and vetiver add depth and texture, while ambergris and musk leave a lasting echo. That blend of incense, herbs, and earthy warmth really resonated with me. I’d love to try Deus ex Petra 21!
    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I am so interested in this scent from the review! I am obsessed with fig scents and the composition of herbal notes and natural essences sounds so perfect to try
