NEW FRAGRANCE REVIEW: Divine Life Perfume “Solstice Rose 11” + Northern Lights Draw

Ragna is a Botanical Perfumer

Ragna Rostad- Ruffner wants to warm our darkest days [and longest nights!], and I’d say she’s accomplished just that in her newest perfume- her limited edition seasonal offering, Solstice Rose 11.

Ragna’s vision was to create a comforting, intimate  natural perfume that swirled around a vintage rose, cocoa and spices – reminiscent of the winter kitchen.

Complex woods couple with the grassy, silvery, and precious essences which mirror the very marrow of the Solstice: celebration, home, hearth, the primeval forest, and rapt reflection.

Notes:

Head – Italian bergamot, bois de rose, cardamom, pink pepper, cedar, coriander, cocoa.

Heart– Rose de mai, geranium absolute, rose otto, styrax, nutmeg absolute, ylang ylang, cinnamon bark absolute.

Base – Vanuatu sandalwood, Haitian and Indian vetiver, Mysore sandalwood, Buddha wood, orris root, vanilla, labdanum.

Solstice Rose 11’s exquisite top notes are fleeting, and I suspect that some of that is due to an inherent sense of delicacy.

Cocoa overdosed is cocoa overload, and Ragna gives us a more sparkling lift with less.

The heart is chock full of rose, and those essences which love and praise her.

Cinnamon and nutmeg accent the lavish florals, they don’t suffocate them.

Ragna’s put nearly every woody beauty in her base- including that Golden Standard, Queen Mysore.

Orris root feels dirty and silvery, a felicitous accomplice to the vetiver twins.

Labdanum is a given here, but not upstaged by vanilla – who pittypats about in her pantoufles, so as not to awaken you from your sylvan slumbers 😉

On my own skin, Solstice Rose 11 sings predominantly in a woody rosy key.

It lasts approximately 5 hours [the botanicals are nestled in a skin-loving fractionated coconut oil base] and wears subtly within one’s personal space.

It whispers of the Northern Lights to me.

Now, let’s get to the numerology aspect, yes?

Ragna tells us that that the number 11 is the current year, her birthdate, and the number of bottles available….

I had that niggling feeling I often get, so I thought I’d consult some favorite sources: Gary Goldschneider / Joost Elffers’  The Secret Language of Birthdays [all 832 pages of it ;-)], and Adam Rhine/ Louise Temple’s Hebrew Illuminations [an exquisite exploration of the possible interpretations of Hebrew letters / numbers].

Ragna dear- we have good stuff for you!

The Hebrew interpretations are beautifully rendered, both artistically and philosophically.

The union of aleph [the first letter of the alphabet = Number 1] and yud

[tenth letter = Number 10] is rife with possibilities.

Aleph symbolizes the oneness of the Creator..

The Yud is the smallest letter, and much like a seed, is contained in all letters and words. It speaks to the enormous power of ten: Ten Commandments, ten Divine channels, ten plagues, etc.

That’s one gorgeous 11!

Now, my astrological friends offer an equally fascinating take on January 11th.

1/11 is known as the Day of Evaluation.

Individuals born on this day tend to be highly principled and strong-willed, possessed of fine analytical skills and can spot a phony at a glance.

They are generous, kind, and devoted, but may suffer from being overly judgmental.

The 11th card of the Major Arcana is Justice – a serene woman who sits holding the scales in one hand and a sword in the other.

She reminds us that balance and harmony are ours to uphold, if we can maintain discipline and integrity.

Healthwise- January 11th– ers can wear themselves out in service to others.

And they do.

They benefit from regular moderate exercise and a balanced diet

 [who doesn’t ? ;-0].

Their psychological rigidity may manifest itself in the lingering nature of joint and skeletal problems, if not duly attended to.

[There, I’m done with my numbers rant; I’ve driven my dear spouse mad with my numerological ravings.]

Do go visit Ragna’s site and explore her works there.

They are delightful.

Senior Editor’s Note: Apologies to all who would have enjoyed more on the numerology part! I had to really condense and truncate it, because Ragna’s perfume should take pride of place 😉

Ragna has offered a 5 ml. bottle to a fortunate reader here at CaFleureBon.Tell us about your relationship to the Winter Solstice, the secrets of birthdays and/ or the number 11. We’d love to hear about it 😉 Draw will close on December 3, 2011.

  • I am such a fan of stories with meaning and scent that coordianates. This year 2011 has not been my best and I will be happy to ring in 2012. Winter solstice was not something that I had ever paid much mind to. Beyond the tides and how the moon affected the personalities of people noteablely, that was the extent of my persuit of understanding. I can tell you that since I am now a legal adult, I have met many people who change around winter solstice and suffer from seasonal depression. My husband, is the best esample of this. He is a libra, usually a moderatlely shy and reserved mild mannered man. However, come winter solstice and change of seasons he can becomes easily overwhelmed withnever seeing the sun. I encourage him to take a ride with his roof open even if its chilly for at least a few minutes a week.
As for birthdays, they usually bring a streak of bad luck for me. I know this story sounds sad, but it is not its reality and not all days are wonderful thought I do believe that most are. IMy birthday is October 8 and as a child I had a three day weekend for columbus day observance which was excellent. But as I grew up, I began to noticce that a series of events would occur that would alter the course of my year good, bad or sometimes indifferent but always like clockwork around my birthday stuff happens.
the number 11 has no specific recognizable meaning to me yet. I hope for the best on the 11th of every month for the rest of my life and all of yours as well.
Thanks you so much Cafeluerbon and also to Ragna for this generoud draw the scent sounds wonderful a hint of chocolate and rose with bergamont…what could be more delicate and peaeful.

  • Not into numerology and I’m too old for birthdays but I love Solstice. My favorite holidays are the ones based on fact. Longest night of the year. Fact. Days are getting longer after this one. Fact.
Great time to have a fire, hold circle, call in the four directions, welcome departed love ones, welcome the return of the sun and then eat a lot food, give presents and drink hot alcoholic beverages.
    Happy Solstice.

  • Ida –I am so honored with this review of Solstice Rose 11!!! I do believe you have captured this scent well in your beautiful description. I am feeling a bit exposed with the bonus numerology reading that is accurate on every count. I vow to get more exercise so my back and hips can let me be!
Many many thanks from my heart.
    LOVE,
    Ragna

  • Ragna’s work is indeed lovely and I recommend her products in general. This perfume sounds wonderful!

I have no connection to 11 as far as I know. However, I do enjoy the winder solstice. I love the winter sky and the appearance of Orion, the crispness of the night air. I like winter, but enjoy the solstice for reminding me that the night will get shorter and the days longer soon enough.

  • Wonderful review on a wonderful all natural product from a wonderful lady! I’d be happy to be included in the draw.

As for all solstices, they are a powerful time of the year. For the winter solstice, I honor the fruit and labour of the summer and autumn and prepare myself to go more inward, in reflection and cleaning. I welcome the darkness and also honor the dark side in myself. Since its all good, the darkness is a part of the whole picture and without it the light couldn’t shine! (yin/yang, day/ night, summer/winter, male/ female, etc.)

Birthdays are magical and I feel that it always is a powerful time of year when much happens or changes for me. I do set intentions and make wishes for the year to come.

The #11 again is very powerful, a master number. It holds a lot of high vibrations, but can also be used to the contrary. When the #11 appears in my life, I feel that the angels are speaking to me, wanting me to listen.

I feel Ida, that you give us a lot to think and it is up to us how we use everything in our life. We can see everything half full or half empty.
My choice is to see it through the scent of the flowers and nature and the beautiful roses…:-) and through so much more beauty that is so abundantly all around us.

    Namaste and Love,
    Tanja

  • for me the winter solstice is HOPE- once I get there, I know the days will be longer and spring will finally come
the very special 10days, till the begining of the next year, are days of meditation and introspection- as if trying to gather inner strengh for the next year
I have no specific link to 11, except that my birthday is in november.
I always feel, like Tanja, the empowering of my birtday celebrations
wonderful description of Solstice Rose 11- many thanks

  • Ragna- I am really glad to have you on CaFleurebon. Thank you for writing me; Ida wrote a fabulous review. I suspend disbelief and find everything about numerology and the secrets of birthdays interesting. Somethings we cannot explain away with science.

  • I think of the winter solstice as the still point of the year, a time for reflection, after which I love to see the days gradually draw out. My birthday is just a few days after the solstice so this time of year is also special for me for that. No links to 11 that I can think of , however!

  • Winter Solstice (along with the first day of spring) is one of my favorite days of the year. i even have a specific scent to wear that pays tribute to that day (Avalon Juniper by Pacifica). However, Solstice Rose 11 sounds like an exceptional way to usher in the beginning of winter and longer days. I look forward to exploring this line. Thank you Ida for an outstanding review and for introducing me to yet another great natural perfumer!

  • Winter Solstice means renewal to me, and I take it as an opportunity to say good bye to old ways and take new paths. This year some major positive new changes have happened in my life, but it’s still hard to say good bye to the loved and familiar. Change is the only constant.

I don’t know much about the secrets of birthdays, except myself and the members of my immediate family were all born with fives in our dates. The number 11 doesn’t mean much to me, I’m afraid.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Winter Solstice = winter blues to me! I feel badly for the negative connection, but I can’t help it.

I know this doesn’t make sense in the numerology sense, but the number 11 means Remembrance Day to me, and when I catch the time being 11:11 I tend to think of passed loved ones. I guess it’s a sentimental number.

I love the woody sound of Solstice Rose 11!

  • Since cozy, warm blankets, tea and cocoa, snuggling, reading, fires in the fireplace, cooking, sunsets, and nighttime walks and stargazing (bundled up) are some of my favorite things, I love deep winter and the Solstice which marks the longest night of the year. I’m a night person, too! I do tend to notice it, and mark the time in my head, but don’t celebrate it much. This year, though, I will be more mindful. Perhaps the spirit of renewal, reflection, and power within the cycle of the seasons should be celebrated with perfume as much as with food and activities.

I already have certain scents I wear for different types of celebrations, not just because I feel more ‘dressed’ with perfume but also because they help get me in the right frame of mind, by marking out a certain space within time dedicated to a holiday, gathering, etc. And some are just for me, to either reflect my mood or to elevate it (kind of like music). This scent sounds like I’d really enjoy it, even though I’m not hugely into florals. Rose can be very uplifting and joyful, especially if it is delicate rather than overpowering, and grounded in warm woods.

Because it’s been so warm, I’ve been taking walks in the mornings to get some sunlight and exercise, and I make a point to pass by a house with a beautiful rose garden and literally stop and smell the roses. It’s a day before December but because of the strange weather they’re still blooming well, I think they only stop when frost settles in. I’m imagining that Solstice Rose smells a little like my hand when I’ve been wearing a woodsy, spicy, or chocolate-y scent and have just gently held a bloom to smell it. Fresh lovely rose, supported by woods and gentle spices…mmmmm…. Bringing a rose to the depths of winter sounds like a lovely way to celebrate the present darkness and the slowly returning sun.
Thanks Cafleurbon and Ragna for the generous draw! And thanks this time and in general for bringing the spotlight to independent, natural, and smaller-scale artists and brands. I love learning about new houses and perfumers from this blog.

Birthdays and numbers…hmmm…I don’t really have strong associations with the number 11 but I liked the illuminated hebrew letters and would maybe read that book if my library had it. And the secret language of birthdays too.

Birthday numbers had never seemed accurate for me, but then again I finished being born just after midnight, and started being born maybe 28 hours before, so maybe I could pick between the three? Reading a few sites and books years ago, I realized that the day before my technical birthday is more true of my personality than my actual birthday. But I view all astrology and related stuff as a mode of understanding myself and others and don’t have much trouble discarding what seems to be irrlelevant or conflicting. Still, I rather enjoy that ‘whoa, that is spookily accurate!’ moment.

  • I just love discovering new natural perfumers, thank you for introducing me to Ragna. I used to dread the winter solstice because I dreaded winter. Had often had a less than preferred relationship with the loss of light, also felt sluggish, would get sick of winter squash and root vegetables come January. I love the seasons, though, which means loving winter and its part in the cycle, which is where I am now with it.

  • Ida, such a wonderful article on one lovely lady and her products. I love that Ragna does small batches. Knowing the ingredients in the products explains so much. Everything she does is done with much LOVE.
Winter Solstice is for me a time of inner reflection and change, a time of expressing and feeling gratitude for all the blessings and lessons received and learned over the past year.
In numerology 11 is a master number and I happen to be an 11, something I followed, but has taken a back seat.
Big Thanks to Cafleurebon for bringing to attention so many wonderful natural perfumers..

  • I think is a Latin word for stop or still. As the solstice approaches, I imagine that I can feel the earth groaning and shuddering like a car driven really fast and then you slam on the brakes.

I used to think that the solstice was the day that the sun set the earliest, but where I live the sun sets later starting about Dec. 14 and then the sun rises later in the morning all the way into January.

  • I love winter as it’s the season of my birth and winter solstice is the day when the time of year I feel most comfortable (albeit cold) starts. It is always a warm, friendly and loving time in my mind.
Btw, my birthdate comes to number 11 as well and I find it strange that some books on numerology skip that number all together so I need to combine it and get 2 (and I’m not sure that’s correct).
I’m one of those who would have loved a bit more on the numerology part.
But you can always do a post on numerology and perfumes in the future.

  • I love Winter Solstice, especially the myths and rituals around it. Of course, I celebrate the days getting longer again as well!

I was born at 11:11 am, so I have always liked the number 11 and been facinated with the numerology behind 11.

Congratulations to Ragna on the new fragrance launch! I had the chance to smell Jaya a while ago and it was beautiful. I know this one will be as well.

  • It has been delightful to read the thoughtful posts on the Winter Solstice and 11. It fascinates me that some of us love the mystery and lore that it brings….and reminds me that perfumery is similar –in that it brings people together with the same enthusiasm and wonder!
    Thank you, EVERYONE- for sharing.
    LOVE,
    Ragna
