Hermès’ Un Jardin Sur Le Toit: Ça Fleure Bon! + Hermès Draw

Indeed it does!

[Smell good, that is ;-)]

Hermès’ newest launch into the “Jardin” series, authored by in-house maître parfumeur Jean-Claude Ellena, is a lilting melody of freshness and clarity.

Jean  Claude Ellena

Decidedly cheerful, fairly linear, a greenly floral, transparent aquarelle-

Un Jardin Sur Le Toit surprised me with its good-fellowship last weekend at Sniffapalooza, where I sniffed it for the first time

Inspired by the roof garden atop 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré [ the flagship address of Hermès in Paris], the fourth addition to this series is a welcome one.

Paul Cezanne is Jean Claude Ellena's favorite painter "The Bathers"

Described as an ‘aromatic fruity floral’, I would prefer to acknowledge it as an “herbal orchard aroma” instead.

Is it wrong to be so blatantly vital? So nakedly happy, fairly waltzing with apple and pear, sheerest gauzy rose, and gently crushed greenery and herbs?

Barefoot in the grass, with only the merest mention of soil underfoot?

You are asking the wrong person 😉

In this particular case, linear is very good.

My senses are regaled with delicacy and bon goût.

Tomato Stem:kjanicki-sotd.blogspot

The lineage to Ellena’s brilliant and ground-breaking tomato leaf – infused Eau de Campagne de Sisley is readily apparent; every cook and gardener can feel it- the rubbed, torn leaf between your fingers, so verdant and crisp.

Un Jardin Sur Le Toit is not edgy nor exotic; it waxes vegetal and redolent of succulent fruits, escorted by the rose and the magnolia.

Its broad appeal lies in its capacity to uplift the flagging spirit and celebrate light-

Much as the moss which insists upon springing up between the cracks in an old wall or sidewalk does.

Paul Cezanne: Summer

If you don’t have a feel-good fragrance of this nature in your wardrobe, Un Jardin Sur Le Toit is an excellent place to start.

A full bottle should be drained fairly quickly in the warmer months to come!

[Think of it as liquid refreshment.]

I am absolutely certain that I could wear this to my work without complaint- more likely, with many compliments;-)

And I think I’m going to….right away.

Editor's Note MC: I had the opportunity to interview M. Ellena in 2009
with the help of his friend Perfumer Michel Roudnitska, most memorable quote:he wanted to create the "perfume of the wind"

And.for those who don't speak French: 'Toit" is pronounced twa

M. Ellena was born in Grasse where he studied with Edmond Roudnitska; he was best man at Michel's wedding

BREAKING NEWS:  Hermès loved the review so much they are offering a  Un Jardin Sur Le Toit 3.3 oz. draw. Draw ends May 6, 2011. Leave a comment about your favorite Hermès  fragrance and you are eligible

  • M. Ellena is my dream lover.  He is so handsome and just about everything he creates speaks to my soul.  ♥  Can't wait to try this one.

  • Looking forward to trying this one.  I love Mousson.  As to a feel-good scent – I love Eau de Sisley 3.  need to try that Campagne, too…

  • I got the sample at Sniffapalooza, too, and I agree…lovely spring scent. (And I love the artwork on the packaging,, so sweet!)  Ida, I enjoyed briefly meeting you this past weekend (at Min NYC—I misprounounced your name!). I now understand why you get so much love on the blogosphere. You have that old fashoined thing called charm, and buckets of it! I always enjoy your reviews.

  • My hands down favorite is Hermes 24 Faubourg. I just recently wore it camping! It was a fantastic outdoor scent, counterbalanced the "roughing it" feel and made sense. I'm just dying to try Un Jardin Sur Le Toit! Thanks for offering this.

  • I am still discovering Hermes but do love (and have) Kelly Caleche in the edt.  I also like Osmanthe Yunnan. The Jardins are all refreshing and bright – the problem is choosing! I did try this one, and liked it.

  • My first Hermes love was Caleche. Tho I was young and the scent wore me rather than the other way around, it made me feel quite sophisticated. Time has passed and the perfume has changed–as, perhaps, has my taste in fragrances–and we no longer get on as well. The Hermes scent I now adore and wear regularly is Osmanthe Yunnan. Not just my favorite Hermes; one of my very favorite perfumes overall. I haven’t tried this latest Jardin but I’d like to. I always appreciate (and often love) JCE’s work.

  • My favorite Hermes fragrance by far is Hiris.  No matter what time of the year I wear it, it always conjures up roots and bulbs and tender shoots forcing themselves up from damp, loamy earth.  It is springtime in a bottle.
Thank you Ida for the wonderful review and thanks to all of you at ÇaFleureBon for the fabulous contest!

  • My favorite Ellena for Hermes is eau jardin en Méditerranée I love the use of tomato vine. Although I wear Eau des Merveilles very often.

  • This article made me think about my summer internship in NYC. The hot air, the warm breeze and the Hermes Rouge that I wore to make myself smell like an established adult!! I was not established nor an adult. I still have some Rouge in my bathroom but I dont use it I leave it out in the hopes that guests will use it and make memories of their own while wearing it. I would love a sumer scent. I have not had a favorite since I ended my affair with Beach. I love Hermes as it is a force in fashion and lifestyle. If I am the chosen winner, I will dance in the dew in my backyard to celibrate! Thanks.

  • for sentimenatl reasons (it's my mother's perfume): caleche.
    to wear myself: hiris.
just because it's up my alley: eau d'hermes.
    well.
i don't have just one favorite hermes fragrance, apparently.

  • chayaruchama says:

    Hermes is a family house…
Eldest is Vetiver Tonka only; youngest is Eau des Merveilles and Gentiane Blanche.
B is Orange Verte all the way.
I'm 24 Faubourg, Caleche, Eau d'Hermes, Equipage, Bel Ami, Ambre Narguile, Poivre Samarcande, Osmanthe Yunnan, Vanille Galante,Vetiver Tonka, Elixir Des Merveilles, Parfum des Merveilles,Brin de Reglisse,Amazone [original], Hiris, Rouge.
    I guess I LOVEthe stuff.
And then, there are the Jardins- but Sur Le Toit I like most of those;-)

  • many! out of Jardin series – Mediterrannee (i'm a sucker for anything fig).

  • OperaFan says:

I recently acquired the first in the Jardin fragrance series and it was love, so I’m really looking forward to trying this one especially if it reaches back to the Sisley scent. My favor Hermes, though, would have to be 24 Faubourg – it’s both elegant and rich to my nose.

  • My favorite Hermes in the summer months is a layering of Gentiane Blanche and Pamplemousse Rose. Thanks for this draw!

  • kathleen says:

Today, it is Caleche Fleurs de Mediterranee.  On other days, I have other favorites.  I would love to try this new one…Mmm magnolia.

My favorite Hermes are Caleche and Iris Ukiyoe, I'd love to get a bottles of this new one!

  • I love Osmanthe Yunnan, Rose Ikebana, Eau des Merveilles but Vanille Galante and Voyage d’Hermes are my favorites. Voyage gets the most wear these days because it just seems to fit in no matter what I’m doing.

    Delightful review!

  • I choose Brin de Réglisse and Vétiver Tonka both for me and my husband too.

  • Ida, I love your review style, and this sounds like my kind of fragrance. It's hard to pick one favorite Hermes creation. I especially adore Terre d'Hermes on my husband, and I love wearing Vanille Galante, Eau des Merveilles and the new Eau Claire des Merveilles.

  • I would love to try this cheerful green floral!  The image of a rooftop garden is wonderful~
I happen to enjoy 24 Faubourg and  am discovering more.. eau de pamplemousse is nice,
I am very curious about the Hermesscence line too!
    Thank you~

  • The only Hermes that has made me open my wallet in a frenzy of must-have is Un Jardin En Mediterranee. It matures on skin sublimely, every stage of its figtastic lifespan worth every penny paid.

  • Hermès creates wonderful perfumes. It's hard to choose just one, but I would say Un Jardin Sur le Nil. These days I'm enjoying it a lot. And it has very good staying power on my skin.
So far, I have liked all the perfumes in the Jardin line (I own two), and I'm looking forward to trying this new scent.
    Congratulations on the review!

  • MelissaJane says:

Hands down, my favorite Hermes is 24 Faubourg edp. Love it and cherish it.

My favorite Hermes is Vetiver Tonka, followed really close by Iris Ukiyoe, Terre d'Hermes and Concentree de Orange Verte.

  • ElizabethN says:

My favorite classic Hermès scent is BelAmi, but I also love Iris Ukiyoe and many others! I've never tried 24 Faubourg, but it seems that I ought to!

  • My absolute ABSOLUTE favorite Hermès' perfume is Terre d'Hermès.
From the jardins collection I like Un Jardin sur le Nil.
Just in case anybody from Hermès is reading this thread (well, can I dream?): it would be so great to get a "travel set" with all four gardens in smaller bottles (15 ml). For 2011 holidays season maybe? Please… 🙂

  • you smell!!! says:

My favorites Hermes are Poivre Samarcande and Vetiver Tonka, thanks for another cool draw!

  • taffynfontana says:

My fave Hermes scent is Iris Ukiyoe is a work of art  probably the best iris scent I have had the pleasure of sampling, it masterfully mixes iris with zesty mandarin and gentle orange blossoms it is exquisite and makes me feel like a million bucks.!!

  • Wow, there are many. I love 24 Faubourg, Eau des Merveilles, Exlixir ds Merveilles. Almost all Hermes fragrances are of very high quality. Thanks for entering me!

  • Holly F. says:

I love Kelly Caleche, it really works on my skin; but I think I need a new Hermes in my fragrance wardrobe, and would love for this one to be it! Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • congrats, that hermes like your review on un jardin sur le Toit 😀
hermes fragrance i like the most is Terre d'hermes, with it's woody scent (especially in cooler weather)

  • RobertoC. says:

My favorite Hermes are Ambre Narguile and Vetiver Tonka, I tried this one when I went to Vegas and it was really good, I’d love to win this one… fingers crossed…

  • OMG, Jardin sur le Toit is my favorite! Really!

I am a huge fan of Hermes and Jean Claude Ellena. He's definitely my favorite perfumer. I really loved In Love Again for YSL, which he did, and I love Pamplemousse Rose and Jardin sur le Nil is fantastic. My other favorite by Hermes is Kelly Caleche in the pure parfum version. Killer!!  Everyone should own this! It lasts a week on fabric and the drydown is brilliant (sunny, slightly animalic and shimmery)

  • I looooove Kelly Caleche- so girly, but with a slightly darker undercurrent…It's one of my top Spring fragrances…I always receive compliments on it- but more importantly, it makes ME feel wonderful all day as the scent lasts and lasts and lasts…

  • My favorite of the Hermes perfumes is Caleche. I tried it once but would really enjoy a whole bottle.
    Thanks!!

  • I love Terre d’Hermes. It’s my one and only true love!! Please kind sir help me with my fix!!

  • Lynne1962 says:

Vetiver Tonka is my hands down fave.  I also have and love Hiris!  Hermes is one of my favorite houses!  I like all the Hermes fragrances,,,there isn't a less than stellar one in the lot!!

  • Maureen Ruf says:

I would love any of the Hermes fragrances.  I tried Kelly Caleche and thought it very beautiful.  I am just getting into fragrance in a big way.  I need a new Spring scent. Had always received Chanel as gifts.  Thank you for the drawing!

  • Michellle Hunt says:

This sounds lovely, and like a perfect warm weather scent.  I tend to like brooding, warm, cozy but layered scents in the autumn and winter, and lighter scents in the summer, just as I switch from coffee to tea as the weather warms.
My favorite Hermes is probably Caleche.  I admit I don't own it, but I always uncap it to sniff when I'm in a store that offers it.  It reminds me of my childhood perception of what a lady should smell like – I real "womanly" fragrance.
Please enter me in the draw!  Thanks!

  • Hermes does such a wonderful job creating refreshing but interesting fragrances. My favorite is Osmanthe Yunnan. I also like Pamplemousse Rose and Un Jardin sur le Nil.

  • I adore Le Jardin en Mediterranee.  Just wish I could find it in the convenient 15ml travel size again!
