When it comes to niche perfumery, there has to be a distinctive style that sets apart the niche perfumery from mainstream. Of course that distinctive signature would not be appreciated by the majority but that’s the matter underlying niche marketing. Segmentation and choosing your target market is the key point of success.

In recent years some niche houses began lose their way and leave behind their original philosophy in order to reach new markets and expand their market share. So there is a decision. Will they remain small and artistic or will they become the players in the big market?  Very few can do both. Fortunately there are still passionate houses with bold perspectives. Without a doubt Initio is one of them which debuted in 2015. Initio has two meanings: "The beginning". The origin, a return to the essence of the perfume, in its original, magical and sacred function. Or: "I initiate". An initiation to discover the perfume as an object of power.

The house has two main lines. Their “Magnetic Blends” are concentrated around synthetics in the vein of Geza Schoen’s Escentric Molecules and “The Absoutes” are complex fragrances that can be layered with Magnetic Blends. I find all the Magnetic Blends well-crafted but there’s a single one that stands out for me. As the name says it all, that one is called Divine Attraction! It’s not a secret that I like challenging fragrances most and Divine Attraction is the most challenging one in the line. It’s love at first sight for me.

When I detected leather, vetiver and smoke, I grabbed the bottle and my wallet at the same time. Since then we’ve an intimate relationship. I won’t describe the notes one by one because the fragrance is all about leather, smoke and vetiver. Depends on the humidity level, sometimes you smell the leather the most and sometimes the main player is vetiver. An animalic feeling surrounds you with the initial blast but that fades too quickly. I wish that would have lasted more.

Don't expect something easy to wear. When the animalic notes phase out, Divine Attraction becomes the smell of catatonia which describes condition of being apparently awake but unresponsive. And it’s the proof that niche market is still breathing. Serenity takes over in the middle phase and is joined by gloomy memories. The projection is not the greatest but remember the temper of the fragrance. We want to remain silent sometimes… The longevity is there for you as a ticket to reminiscence.

Fresh citrusy scents can be worn by anybody and that is just fine, certainly you can garner compliments easily. But in my book, niche fragrance is something else… Something risky, artistic, visceral and something unexpected! For those who like Olivier Durbano Black Tourmaline, Naomi Goodsir Bois d'Ascese, Comme des Garçons Black and Jovoy Private Label, Divine Attraction will be sure to captivate you.

  • I’ve been a client TPC for years, love just even reading about perfume there.

I’d love to try Initio Divine Attraction because lately I’ve been the picture of catatonia, lol, and need a scent and maybe even a soundtrack to go with me.

I have mixed feelings about niche frags going mainstream – I like to smell like a rarity – but if they were more mainstream they’d be more accessible.

I live in Canada, thanks for the draw!

I would like to try it because it is the most challenging in the line and would appeal to those who have CDG Black that I own. I also loved Bois D’Ascese from decant so there is a high chance I would like Divine Attraction. I have not tried any from initio so far. I am already subscribed to TPC newsletter. Thanks a lot for the draw.

  • I ‘ve never tried Initio fragrances, but the notes are among my favorites. I’d love to try this. I’m torn about indie niche perfumers and lines going mainstream. I’m so glad I have several scents from Atelier Cologne because with the L’Oreal buyout–well, enough said. I also love the attention individuals like Andy Tauer, Rodney Hughes and Jeffrey Dame give to their clients. I am in the US.

  • Losing their way and leaving behind their original philosophy… yes. That’s the right way of putting it, I hate this term but it comes to mind – selling out. But I am also in a way glad that they have been so successful, but my faith in a company definitely dwindles when they become an unrecognizable ghost of their former selves. Of course it is natural for change to occur but when they sacrifice their originality and quality for monetary reasons, I almost always lose interest. With niche brands, I understand what is behind the price tag, and I would much rather be stuck paying more for a brand I know is quality rather than paying less, even much much less, for a brand that USED to be known for quality but now most of the price tag is in the brand. Know what I mean?

I have never tried Initio fragrances, but it’s nice to hear they’re still creating with niche in mind. Interesting article, Berkan!

  • You had me at leather and smoke. Sweet music to my ears or should I say, pulse points. I have neither heard of nor tried any of the Initio fragrances and clearly have been missing out something great. This review leaves me wanting to know more about Initio. A tryst that could be the start of a great love affair indeed. I already want more with nary a sniff.
As for niche going mainstream, I hate it. I want to be in a secret club that only other fragrance fanciers are members of. Elite noses required, mainstream people need not apply. It’s the best kept secret that only members can be a part of. I hope it remains hidden for the masses.
I’m in the US. Thank you

I have never heard of Initio Parfums before, judging from the description it seems to be a niche in niche, which is always very interesting for me, although I find such scents too difficult to wear. I would like to know if this is also the case? Thank you for the review, I live in the EU.

  • Leather and smoke are more than enough for me to become a devoted fan of even the most demanding and strange perfume. Bois d’Ascese and Black Tourmaline don’t seem too strange when compared to the smell of catatonia. I have to know how it smells like!
I didn’t have the chance to test any Initio fragrance yet. I am in Europe

  • I love “challenging” fragrances as well! The riskier, the better for me. Until reading this, I had not been familiar with Initio Parfums. I’m all in with leather and smoke!!! I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I had never heard of inititio but I will search it out
Love the imagery with this review
It is a debate whether be small or grow
I think some indies need to stay small as they would have to change formulas
Divine attraction sounds odd but I would love to win

I love the photos of Benoit Courti. they have something unsettling about them, which I believe represent a necessary quality of niche perfumes. Niche compositions cannot be “too pretty” or perfectly harmonious, they have to have some harsh, provoking notes: a different kind of beauty.

And this is what I expect of Divine Attraction. I read about Initio Parfums, but haven’t had the chance to try any of their fragrances yet. I would love to win this one. Thank you for the review!

  • I never tried Initio fragrances, so I am very curious. I love leathery and smoky vetyver, but perhaps all my experiences with these notes were more in a mainstream style and I still don’t know how edgy and rebellious can their niche interpretation be. Let’s find out! Than you for the draw. I am in the EU.

  • I love the pictures and the design of the bottle. Black bottles usually hide the most distinct and unique scents.

I think that some changes on the market are unavoidable, but I am glad that some niche perfume houses remain niche and don’t try to attract mass market, even if they pay a high price for that strategy. I agree with Alduin, I am also ready to pay more for a high quality unusual scent not similar to hundreds of others.

Thanks for the draw. I live in Norway.

  • “The smell of catatonia” sounds freaky and intriguing. The very thought of it scares me a little, but I feel drawn to the concept. most of the perfumes in my collection are “pretty” and get a lot of compliments and I would like to check if I am ready to start wearing something more complicated and risky. This would be my first experience with Initio Parfums. I live in the EU.

  • I have not tried any fragrances from this house. This one sounds very interesting and unique to me though. It seems like a really dark and seductive scent and I really wanna try it! I think niche becoming mainstream is a good thing. A lot of the general public don’t really know much, or anything, about niche. So gaining knowledge and experiencing knowledge about niche can only be a good thing. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • I would love to try this! Leather, vetiver and smoke are three of my favourite base notes. I guess I like challenging fragrances too. This sounds darkly mysterious. It seems like a good thing that it wears close to the skin. Those three notes could easily overwhelm. I actually love perfumes with low projection. It’s like wearing a secret.

I’ve never seen Initio Parfums where I live, but love niche perfumes. I live in Canada. Thanks.

I have never tried any perfume creation from Initio House. I would love to experience Divine Attraction for the notes leather and smoke sound too sensual to resist!
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank you for the chance to experience such a creation from a niche perfume house.

  • I have never heard of Initio parfums, but I love discovering new niche fragrances, especially when they are so unique. As for niche entering mainstream market, I am not sure what to think. I feel quite sad it when niche becomes like many other brands and loses their original concept of perfume-making, but on the other hand many people can discover niche market and love unusual scents.

I would like to try Divine Attraction mainly because of vetyver which I love. Thank you for the review! I live in the EU.

  • I have not heard of this line. I would love to try this Divine Attraction…great name! I, to, feel sad when niche fragrances are bought by giants, and become more mainstream. I live in the USA.

  • cinnamon tree says:

I would like to try it, because I love the bottle with the ornament and the name! Never heard of this house before. I am very excited when I am able to discover new niche perfumes. Too bad they become mainstream so often… thankfully not all of them.
Thanks for the draw! I live in the EU.

  • echinacea says:

I am sure that niche perfume market not only is still breathing, but grows and discovers new fantastic scents and fragrant molecules. I am confident that along with some interesting niche brands going mainstream and losing their original philosophy, new niche houses and perfumes will appear.

I love smoky perfumes, even if they are sometimes difficult to apply (spraying once is too much, spraying less than once isn’t always possible). I’ve never tried Initio scents before. Thank you for this opportunity and the draw! I live in the EU.

  • I’d love to try this! I never get tired of leather and smoke notes in perfumes and still looking for the perfect smoke scent. Never tried fragrances from this house so I’m really curious! I’m from the EU.

  • Toblerone says:

Indie houses should stay niche, independent and not available everywhere. It is not (only) about being a member of a secret club wearing a secret scent, but I don’t believe in preserving high quality and uniqueness in large-scale production process.
I like the bravery in describing Divine Attraction as a “smell of catatonia”, a state which usually doesn’t evoke the most pleasant emotions and associations. I wonder if the scent lives up to the description?
Thank you for the review and the information about Initio parfums. Europe.
