Angela Ciampagna Fauni and Ignes (2016)~Fragrance Review+ Faith In Fire Draw

Angela and Enrico, Pitti Fragranze, 2016

I met with Angela Ciampagna and Enrico Maraffino, partners in perfume and life, at Pitti Fraganze in Florence 2016. Drawn by a combination of a charisma and the very intriguing presentation, there was immediately an unspoken understanding between us, we reside in similar worlds and so it was with  the two fragrances from their newest Cineres collection Fauni and Ignes

They work with the union of things seemingly that may be in direct opposition to each other, the slight tendance to clash, imperfections that are both harmonious and intriguing. It would seem that imperfection rules and opposites do attract.

Atri Cathedral,Luciano Adriani©

So within, so without, the union of inner and outer, sacred and profane, matter and spirit, created as Alchemy in the sacred geometrical vesica piscis, associated with so many world cultures over time and reflected in the ichthys wheel, Atri Cathedral Window, as their signature bottle.

Solstice Light, Montsegur, 2010.Ivande Castries©

Let me unravel a story for you, for I feel as I make this foray into this quite superb Italian house based in Atri, Abruzzo as a storyteller holding an ancient tome, blowing off the dust from parchment papers to bring something of consequence from the past that is written all over these villages and towns, whispering stones bearing witness to present ears. Of Cineres, Fire Under Ashes, stepping out beyond the modern world into age old rites. The Atrian Solstice, ‘the longest night of the year, lived all in one breath, in a mystical waiting.’ Faugni, bundles of reeds are ignited at the breaking of dawn to challenge the winter light and to give notice from the verdant Spring in waiting.

Faunus  Dark Beauty Magazine

Favni (Fiore Millenaro): Initially this shocks with its potency of the green accord, sharp mountainous forest , the scent of new spears of green bursting through soil, startling awakening where the exhale of cold winter air meets the heated breath of revelers, the God Faunus. Striding through the edges of primal night to enter the ancient streets, serving notice to winters grasp. It softens its calling to merge with the whispers of the ancient stones of the city as it wakens the night with revelry, passing like through the revelers as silently as mist, in his passing igniting the breath. Revealing a warming centre as if mimicking the streets of Atri where the night turning to day is a reflection of Winter turning to Spring.

Dying Season,Crystal Lee Lucas©

Full of rich warm florals, woods that entice and have a sanctity of cathedral incense. The sacred sap of trees, the essence of the forest bought into the cathedral as an offering for liturgy. Once again this intertwining.

Fumitory Offering, Danu Seith-Fyr, 2017

Towards the dawn as anticipation of the appearance of the lit Faugni builds I am taken by surprise again as there is a totally different take on the base here, a challenge to preconceptions, this is the waft of religiosity. Imperceptibly the movement of robes over cobbled stones, the air of the pre – dawn fragmented by a mandorla of resins, balm and rich amber, church pews distilled with an earthly sensuality that arises as the fragrance of masculine wrists at the juncture of vestment fabric and skin. Notes- Floral-Green Chord, Italian Gardenia, Jasmine, Indonesian Ylang Ylang, Wood Chord, Somali Olibanum, Benzoin, Tolu Balm, Musk Chord, Amber Chord.

Ignes: Ripe with crackling, the dry Faugni of rushes carried aloft down streets of anticipation, the grassy sweet sharpness welded to smoldering ignition notes, a slight acridity held within a gasp of expectant conflagration, the crowds carried along by the rushing thrall. Its tobacco caressed heart is a smoky haze lit with illumination, a fertile hope, the woods sitting in its centre, soft aromas of the burst of flames carried high in the night.

Notte dei Faugni, Atri, 2014,Tessori d’Abruzzo©

Amid the revelry, fires flaring off the softest patchouli oils, balsam, labdanum, bright expectancy of rising faith in the renewal to come, in the Spring and the Feast of the immaculate Conception as the finale in the front of the Cathedral where all Faugni and prayers are united in the bonfires.

The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, Ventura Salimbeni, 1568- 1613

Air now thick with plumes of prayers, the fragrance is amber tinged ash, the sparks that danced to the heavens as Benediction spiral to extinction as snowflakes of spent fire brands, the Ashes, Prayers of the faithful resting to fertilise the earth. Notes- Sour Chord, Tobacco Absolute, Balsam Of Peru, Indonesian Patchouli, French Labdanum, Maritime Wood Chord, Vetiver, Indian Sandalwood, Musk Chord, Amber Chord.

Faith In Fire

One by one, the solstice stars leave their sphere,

the sun has lain a tired shine to bed,

and a plain black sky rolls over head.

In streets and alleys, submerged in dark,

small as fireflies at first,

little flames spring up to do their work.

Comes closer down the narrow paths,

a crown of fire sat upon a tall reed,

brings the sun light on which to feed.

And calls to every flame within the town,

little beads of brightness, carried in the hands

of those who caught the stars coming down,

the faugni ignes, building confidence,

gathers to itself, comes to conflagration,

celebrates the blessed mother, with brilliance.

The sun can hear in dreams, the call

of the beloved, holding torches

for the one who blesses all.

Both of these perfumes as described by Danu sound mysterious and deep. The florals in Fauni sound more like something I’d be interested in. Thank you so much for the chance to try something from this house…I am familiar with Angela Ciampagna but have yet to try anything of hers. I am in the US.

  • I very love this review. Danu’s review is fantastic. I really like the description of the fragrances. I am not familiar with Angela Ciampagna, but these perfumes are sounds so wonderfully. If I would be as lucky to win, my choice is Fauni. Thank you very much for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • femmelady says:

I enjoyed learning about the pagan rituals associated with these perfumes! I was just in Turin, Italy last week at Elide’s profumi where he told me about the Ciampagna line and I bought a bottle of Favni! So I would love a companion bottle of Ignes. I’m in Missouri in the US.

  • I liked the Faith in Fire poem.
I choose Ignes if I win.
I hope this draw will be my chance of knowing Angela Ciampagna perfumes.
    I live in E.U.
    Thank you.

This wonderful review had me at, tobacco absolute, Indonesian Patchouli, and vetiver!
    I would choose Ignes.
I am familiar with Angela’s work, but have never owned any of her fragrances.
    I live in the USA.

  • This review was so evocative of the pagan rites and symbols, and very interesting to read. I think I would like to try Ignes, based on the notes.
I do not know Ciampagna’s work, but look forward to find out more.

I enjoyed the review which I think must have captured the essence of the fragrances. If I won, I would like to try the Fauni based upon the notes. I’m not familiar with Ciampagna’s fragrances at all. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • Danu’s review was very poetic. I’ve never come across this line before, but Ignes sounds so lovely, it would be my choice. I’m in Canada.

  • fazalcheema says:

It seems Angela and Enrico employ the concept of Yin and Yang in their perfumes but experimenting with contrasting concepts. I am more drawn to Ignes because while it is green, it also has smoky accord so I am intrigued. I believe Angela and Enrico started their brand well before 2016 because I remember reading about their brand, cannot recall exactly but it was probably an Italy-based reviewer who runs a perfume blog, too, and one of the things that most helped me is the brand’s unique packaging. This tells me packaging is important in defining brand’s image because it can set it apart from the competition. My choice for this draw is Ignes. I am in the US.

  • Melvin Lim says:

Very nice art and poetry to complement the review
I would like to win Fauni based on the notes. I have Liquo and Rosarium from the brand, good stuff. I’m in Singapore. Thanks.

  • roxhas1cat says:

The Favni sure takes a lot of twists and turns. I like how nature is intertwined with the cathedral and the smells there. If I should be the lucky winner I would choose the Ignes with it’s tobacco caressed heard and the patchouli. I like the cathedral windows on the bottles, very calming and “familiar”. Interesting read. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • Nice pics. and poetry to demonstrate the inspiration behind the perfumes.
    The presentation is striking!!
I think I would like to try Fauni.

    In USA.

  • Oh, I like so much the story of Angela Ciampagna! A perfume lab in a very small and seclusive part of Italy, which the review of Danu describes so vividly.
I know some of the previous Angela’s works, loving their “rural” quality. I own a bottle of Liquo.
I’d like to choose a bottle of Ignes, in case I win.
    I’m from Italy.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Danu’s review style really appeals to me with its use of language to paint and may I say ‘caress’ the ideas he is expressing with the combos of the notes and accords. The Poem is amazing and what a wonderful gift to us, the readers here. Ignes will be my first choice. I’m in New Zealand and unfortunately I am not familiar with Angela Ciampagna. I’d dearly love to be tho’ 🙂

  • I own a decant of Aer and quite like that metallic salt. So now after your emotional introduction I am curious about Ignes, which I would love to receive to Switzerland. Thank you!

  • marcopietro says:

Great review! It’s so suggestive and it restores the atmosphere of many small towns in the center of Italy. Difficult choice, but at this moment the most affine fragrance to my mood I think is Ignes.
I’m not familiar with Angela Ciampagna’s fragrances at all though I live in Italy.
    Thanks!

  • Danu’s review clothes the Cineres collection with a mysterious aura most likely deserved. I would choose Fauni for its description marvelously depicts the encounter of rituals, from paganism and first churches, continuity between the already ancient and the truly immemorial.
I’m not familiar with Angela Campagna’s work but it seems really intringuing. I live in France, thanks for the draw!

  • kaitracid says:

Nice description of the scents and poem. The woods, tobacco and campfire from Ignes really do speak to me and it’s the one I’d chose. I’m not familiar with Angela Ciampagna’s perfumes. I’m in Europe.

  • gregorysop says:

Definitely creative use of adjectives. Sounds like a very interesting religious party with respect to the mentioning of flames and fire frequently as well. Poem by Math jones for the article is also very well put together and descriptive.
    Interested in Ignes

  • Hi, thank you for next one nice review. Danu’s reviews are very poetical, they moves me to some mysterious, dreamy landscape.
I didn’t try any fragrance by Angela Ciampagna, but would like to try Ignes.
I live in EU. Thank you for the draw.

  • I’m not familiar with Angela. What appealed to me the most is the description of Fauni with it’s intense green notes and foresty notes. This mixed with a churchy incense accord and florals sounds divine. I would pick Fauni as it’s more appealing to me out of the twwo. I live in the U.S.. Thank you so much.

  • Starting with the phrase opposites attract, the entire review intrigues me about this house which I have never heard of. Both scents sound amazing and it would be hard to choose between the two. In the real world they both sound like something I would love. But, having to choose one blind I would choose Favni based on the notes. I live in Oregon in the US.

  • Thank you, Danu for this beautyfull review. Both of these perfumes as described by Danu sound mysterious and Intriguing, with many nice comparisions.
    I prefer a Ignes.

Very mystical and almost religious reviews. I especially like the first review, it reminds me of winter fragrances which appeals to me even though it’s the middle of summer. I would choose Fauni because of the floral fragrances. I am in the US. I am not familiar with Angela Ciampagna, but I will look into the brand 🙂

  • Danu, your prose describing these perfumes is beautiful. I would choose Fauni. I like the idea of the green opening which morphs into church resins. Sounds mysterious and lovely. USA. Thank you for the draw.

Fauni sounds very interesting, i like the idea of finding a connection between paganic, earthy, sacred and religious. Also i like the fact that this house is looking for inspiration in its local culture. The presentation of the bottles is so beautiful! I would like to win Fauni. I live in the EU.

  • Imperfection & Beauty; I found it and appreciated it too many times in my life. Because I love this statement from Danu`s review “It would seem that imperfection rules and opposites do attract”.
To me Agnes is more appealing based on listed notes and I would win Agnes if I have a chance.
