American Perfumery Series: Profiles — Anya McCoy of Anya’s Garden + Fireworks Draw

July 4th  is American Independence Day and gives me an excuse to begin a series profiles of some of our best American perfumers and perfumeries. In the past several weeks we interviewed Mandy Aftel and Neil Morris. Liz Zorn . Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, DelRae Roth, Maria McElroy,Joanne Bassett, Sarah Horowitz Thran,Sarah Barton King, Christopher Brosius, Keiko Mecheri, Sylvie Ganter Laurie Erickson, Ineke RuhlandElise Pearlstine, Laurice RahmeCharna Ethnier,Amanda Walker Jane Hendler Alexandra Balahoutis, Lisa Fong,  Yael Alkaley, Rodney Hughes, Sonsa Rae  Joe Garces of Robert Piguet,Jessica Dunne of Ellie D.,Eva Marie Lind, DelRae Roth  of Parfums DelRae and Shelley  Waddington, appear on CaFleureBon .

Recently, Managing Editor Mark Behnke profiled Joseph Quartana, the FiFi award winning Soho boutique owner; Mark also represented CaFleurebon in Milan at Esxence. .

So what is an American perfumer? Like many of us  they were born somewhere else, but spend much of  their time in the U.S. They may even have dual citizenship, like Kilian Hennessy , Calice Becker, Yann Vasnier, Rodrigo Flores Roux (he has three passports hmmm) and Fabrice Penot; or like Liz Zorn and Anya,  their families have roots planted   before the signing of the Constitution.

That’s America; we are a very young  country only 235 yrs old.

Anya McCoy: German ancestors came in 1690, later 1800s.  An  All American Woman–her background is a melting pot of  English, Irish,Scottish,Welsh,African, Jewish, and Christian with a true cross-cultural upbringing in a mixed Italian/German/Irish/Jewish neighborhood in Philadelphia,(the home of the liberty bell) and thought the whole world was  multi cultural like that! Truly a spectacularly diverse childhood— urban and adventurous, Anya now lives in Florida.

According to Anya McCoy who is a natural perfumer and the President of The Natural Perfumer’s Guild: “Americans lead the world in the establishment of 21st Century independent perfumers, true artisans who are carving out a new frontier with our art, the way our rebellious ancestors who fled oppression or starvation did when they came to America to have freedom and opportunity for their families!!! The Natural Perfumers Guild may have members from many countries, but it is American in its heart, and Mandy Aftel did start the movement for uniting artisan natural perfumers under a common name, for a common goal, which is to help each other develop professionally and creatively, and to educate the general public about natural aromatics and perfumes”

Her perfume that is truly all-American in concept is RiverCali. It was created to reflect the fragrant beauty of the citrus and rose growing areas of Riverside, California. She had a pink peppercorn tree outside  her kitchen door, and  was studying economic botany at the university. They have over 1200 varieties of citrus growing there, including the one that neroli orange blossom oil is made from. RiverCali reflects the region perfectly, and many Southern Californians have told her she captured  the essence of the region. Composition: Pink peppercorn, neroli, two types of citrus petitgrain, rose, vanilla and sandalwood. According to Anya, renowned perfume critic Luca Turin loved RiverCali's drydown.

Anya has graciously has offered a  3.5ml  of River Cali, to be eligible please leave a comment on what America means to you (even if you don’t live here or hold residence here), your favorite American Perfumer  or your favorite fragrance by Anya McCoy. Draw closes  July 5, 2011

  • I was born and raised in Germany, to me America means such a large variety of wonderful people from all walks of life. Different cultures living next to each other and appreciating each other. Beautiful large country with all sort of different climates from east coast to west coast. From the oceans to the mountains, amazingly beautiful and full of history.

  • Gary W. Bourbonais says:

It was with delight that I saw you folks are beginning this series with Anya McCoy….Anya, in the close to two decades I have known her (in the cyber sense), has been on line opponent, ListMom, Mentor…and most importantly, my introduction to the concept of NP….

In addition to the Natural Perfumer’s Guild Presidency, she founded, with a lot of work and effort, the NP List on Yahoo’s Lists…

A factor and influence in my life, in terms of NP and the Essences…and, I suspect others…

I, myself, am second generation Canadian and Finn…Grandparents on both sides immigrated to the US…Curiously, both lines came through the UP of MI, but my Dad and Mom met in WI….

I celebrate America, on its official birthday particularly….This particular Flag Holiday, the Betsy Ross flies here…..

  • Being an American you are free…free to practice the religion of your choice, you have a vote, you have free speech, you have the right to assembly…

Being an American is an attitude..a strength.. proud people and a melting pot of all races under one flag..

  • I an mot an American but a part of my family lives there and I like to spend vacation there. There are always many things to discover.

  • I thank God every day for being born an American. I am first generation American on my father’s side and English, Scotch-Irish on my mother’s side. My father was from Bulgaria. He came here in 1914 at age 14 and never got to go back. I went back for my first visit in 1975 to meet my father’s family. It was wonderful but scary. Two weeks in the then communist country of Bulgaria made me realize just how lucky we are to be free, Christian, and born in America. As a child I could not understand why my father would not teach us Bulgarian. He always said that we (my brother and I) were born here and that we needed to only know English because he wasn’t going to take us to Bulgaria. Little did he realize that I would get to go to Bulgaria, meet my family, and learn about roses. Now I take the knowledge that I learned while in Bulgaria and make my American made rose oil. America is the place where dreams are dreamed and they actually do come true with hard work, patience, and the help of God. Thank you for allowing me to comment. Happy Fourth of July!

  • Never been or lived in USA. What I’ve noticed (which is very different from Europe) is people who never forget to give compliments, nice words in general… in Europe we somehow are sticking with bad comments 🙂

  • To me, USA is New York, Chicago and San Fransisco, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Park and Alaska, sports, music and lots of friends – emigrants there!
Unfortunately, I have never tried any of Anya’s fragrances – I wish to!
And the best nose I know is Sophia Grojsman, though she’s not native American.

  • Maggie Mahboubian says:

Although I was born and raised in Iran, my mother is an American, so when we moved to the US in 1979 I felt like I was returning to my other roots. I have a strong affinity to the floral scents of my childhood and young adolescence, rose, jasmine and orange blossom, but I also love the green smells of the “new world”, sweet moist hay, wildflowers and trees. This is such a great country, truly the land of opportunity. Now is the time for natural perfumers to look ahead and help shape a beautiful future. Anya certainly embodies the best qualities of an American perfumer! Vive la revolution naturelle!

America gave freedom of religion to my family; my mother and her brothers only spoke Yiddish when they entered school- yet Abe was able to become the first Jewish professor of Classics at a prominent NY university.

America enabled my daughter-by-choice, Bora- to enter Boston Latin School after only two years in the U.S., having left a war-torn Albania-[ in a horrid middle
school ]-and via hard work- to earn a free ride to Princeton.

This is the American dream, at its best.
    Screw the stereotypes !
Who would have dreamed that a boho Jewish-Buddhist would wind up in Southie for 31 years- only to have her concern and affection reciprocated ?
    Surely, NOT me ;-0

We make awful mistakes- who does not ?
But I dearly love my country- and all its people, with their sorrows, flaws, strengths and idiocies.

Lovely to see you, Miz Anya ;-0
And enjoy your Fourth, my friends !

[BTW: if I were around in 1776, Lord help Thomas Jefferson ;-0
Those who know me well, know that I would have earmarked him for major amorous adventure;-0]

  • This is the country that gave my grandparents freedom, safety from persecution in Eastern Europe and opportunity. It’s really that simple. I agree with Chaya. Whatever the flaws, and there have been many, we have many freedoms.

  • I’m not American but I have been there and I have some American cousins. For me, America is freedom, as so many said. But America is nature, beautiful landscapes, cosmopolitan cities and lovely villages and, usually, really nice people. Americans always try to make you feel like you’re at home.

Thanks for the draw and happy Fourth of July!

  • One thing I love in America is our national park system. I am proud that as a parent I have given my kids a love for nature, thanks to visits to the beautiful places we have preserved (and lets hope we continue to do so).

    I love Anya’s Moondance.

  • Denise Smith says:

I am very proud to be an American. We are not perfect, but there is no place better. Anya is a perfect example
of what one can become, hard working, creative and very
generous with her knowledge and experience.

  • My favourite American perfumer so far is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz but there are so many to choose from and they keep getting better.

  • I think about how great it is to be in our wonderful country everyday in one way or another. I am thankful for the sacrifice of previous generations of my immigrant family. And for the forsight they posessed to emmigrate to America. They gave up everything including their identity to pursue a dream and that takes guts. Could I do that now…give up my luxuries and just leave in to pursue my dreams and make a better life for those future generations which I may only share blood and namesake and never meet?
That was just two generations ago on either side of my family escaping the harsh conditions of then, Czechloslovakia (bad speller). I think often of the sacrifices that are made by many people to keep our country safe and strong. I am also very thankful to be free to be myself and have my opions embraced and not objectified. I can talk freely about the topic of my choosing and thats powerful. I am only oppressed by that which I allow.
    I love America.
I do not have a favorite of Anya’s sadly, as I am not well versed in her creations. I applaud her talents and the risks that she takes to breathe life into her dream potions. I love Anya’s red hair I must say as I am partial to redheads my youngest daughter has the most awe inspiring red locks and I admire them very much. I call her my little velvet head and she has a penchant for perfume I might add:)
Happy fourth to everyone. Thats a great piece posted with Lady Liberty:)

  • Although I have been to America a couple of times, one of my first and strongest memories is of singing in a children’s chorus on the stage at Mount Rushmore. And from there on driving through the Black hills, and seeing the unfinished Crazy Horse memorial.
I think Americans must be amongst the friendliest and most hospitable people I’ve ever come across.
Unfortunately American perfumers works are not easily obtainable in Europe, so I have yet to try Anya’s fragrances, which sound fabulous.
    Happy July 4th! Go celebrate!

  • Oh, I love Anya’s Kaffir perfume! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway, and may the “fourth” be with you!

  • The United States for me means HOME. I am foreign born, but the US was a place where I truly felt home. Everything seems to fit with my attitude, even though my first trip to the grocery store seemed crazy, I could not possibly fathom a whole wall of cereal boxes and no müsli, LOL. I did not know whether I would be able to come back, but fate had it that I found home and love and marriage in the same place. So the US means a lot to me.

My favorite US perfumer is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, with Neil Morris in the running too… but I have to give the best to Dawn because I know many more of her creations and her unique approach to help one choose one’s fragrances from her line.

I do not know any of Anya McCoy’s perfumes, but I would love to try River of Cali. Thanks for the draw and happy 4th!

  • Happy Fourth of July!

What the United States of America is and stands for can not be duplicated. We are a unique country and we should be proud of our American perfumers.

Having read much on Anya’s perfumes but have not had the pleasure to enjoy them yet, River of Cali would be an excellent choice to start with being a Californian (born and raise in LA).

God Bless America! May she keep blessing us.

  • What a wonderful series you’re starting, Michelyn! About time for American perfumers to have a place in the sun, and to kick it off on Independence Day, to boot. I’m truly honored to be the first in the series – I knew my wildly-mixed heritage would pay off some day 😉

I’m loving all the ancestry being recalled by the folks posting in this thread. We’re truly a diverse, beautiful country and it’s no surprise the Outlaw Perfumers, and the entire artisan perfume movement started here. Thanks for recognizing it, Cafleurebon.

  • I am new to naturaly perfumery but I consider Anya an important teacher in my venture to discover the art of mixing and creating scents that are as beautiful lin the air as they are mixed with our body chemistry! It takes such a vast amount of studying and learning to learn the world of NP and I am getting there with constant reading and experimentation! Thank you Anya for answering my questions with great patience and opening the way for more knowledge for me!

  • What an inspired series to celebrate Independence Day and American Perfumery! I’m looking forward to more and love your support of American Indie Perfumers at CFB!

    Happy Independence Day to everyone~

  • Suzanne Wlaschin says:

I am an expat American living in England. Because of a tragic death in my family I just unexpectedly spent the month of June in the US. – Oh, what can I say, I have a love/hate relationship with the country of my birth, I guess. However, I adore Anya, was so inspired by her when I interviewed her for my thesis on Natural Perfumery a couple of month ago. She is a force of nature. I’d love to be entered into the draw for some River Cali!

  • i will return to the thought of america’s freedoms when i am done seeing what the ifra will limit and take away from my organ.

meanwhile a peaceful stroll down anya’s river will soothe me. *grin*

  • Michellle Hunt says:

America means the freedom to be a perfumer and make a wonderful business while bringing art and beauty to all those who want it..my fervent desire is that it remains this way!

  • For me, America is a promise…one that we try to hold ourselves to through our laws and system of government…the promise of realizing some of the greatest ideals ever dreamed of by human beings- freedom, equality, brother/sisterhood…We may not always achieve these ideals, but we have certainly grown closer over the years, and the fact that we have and continue to do so means everything.

  • I’ve lived in the U.S for the past 7 years or so..Growing up, America was always a symbol of everything that was possible- a melting pot of races and ethnicities where new ideas were born

  • I’m third generation on one side from Holocaust refugees, and know that without my grandparents coming to America, I would not be alive today.

One of the best parts of living in America in the internet age is ACCESS. I would never have learned about natural perfumery without the presence of blogs and all the amazing people that write so passionately about this subject. As a newbie, I am excited to try as much as I can and would be THRILLED to win a chance to experience River Cali.

  • Amanda Holmes says:

My mom is full blooded Hungarian. She has been in the US since the early 60’s and is fiercely devoted to this land she now calls home. After living through a revolution at a young age, she raised my sister, my brother and I to appreciate this land we live in and the freedoms given us. My mom still cries every Independence Day; out of heartfelt gratitude for living here and for the family she left behind in Hungary. Sometimes people think it’s strange that my family is so patriotic, but so few in the US know what it’s like to live in a war-torn nation. We forget sometimes how spoiled we are living in America. If you ever need a reminder, just ask my mom. 🙂

  • I have the sample set of Anya’s perfumes, and I find my favorite shifts here and there based on the day, the weather, and my mood. They are all great! Sitting consistently in the 90’s in Colorado, Kaffir has been quite enjoyable lately.

As for America, it is great to have a chance to stand up for your beliefs and have a voice in creating change.

For anyone who hasn’t been following, the 2011 Safe Cosmetics Act has been put online now, and poses some serious risks to the fantastic indie perfumers that have been featured many times on this blog and others. Anyone in the US who hasn’t educated themselves on this, I encourage you to do so and make sure your voice is heard, lest you might find your favorite scents made unavailable.

    Thanks!
    Michael

  • Anya kicks off a series that celebrates all America perfumery and will focus on all independent perfumers and perfumeries that call America home

  • Again, thank you to the CFB team, this is going to be a great series. American perfumers are gutsy, pioneers and true to the American spirit, even if they were born somewhere else. Thank you to everyone who has commented, I’ve loved reading every post, because you’re all inspiring and speak from the heart.

Thanks to Michael for bringing up a terrible piece of legislation that will threaten our American perfumes and cosmetics, the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011. Ironic our government released it on July 4th, when everyone was distracted, celebrating our Independence. We must turn the tide against SCA, and preserve the American Perfumer’s businesses.
