Zoologist Sacred Scarab Review (Sultan Pasha) 2022 “Unearthing a Modern Treasure “

“…as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold – everywhere the glint of gold. I was struck dumb with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon inquired anxiously, ‘Can you see anything?’ it was all I could do to get out the words, ‘Yes, wonderful things.’” ― Howard Carter, The Tomb of Tutankhamen

With a dusty shaft of light intensified by the gleam of gold effulgence, Zoologist Perfumes has revealed their latest release, Sacred Scarab, a modern interpretation of the ancient.  Sacred Scarab marks Victor Wong’s (Creative Director of Zoologist) first collaboration with Sultan Pasha, best known for his lavish and complex attars, among which is Chypre Chrysantheme, noted as one of CaFleureBon Best Perfumes of 2020.

One might think the sacred scarab, also known as the dung beetle, to be an unusual inspiration for a perfume; to Sultan Pasha, it’s clearly an opportunity to explore the insect’s lore and surroundings, with attention to the contrasts of light and dark, modern and ancient, actual and metaphorical. The result is a sumptuous golden elixir, a wearable modern relic Zoologist Sacred Scarab is one of the brand’s best releases to date.

Before we reach the tomb, Dr. Jones, there’s much to explore and many treasures to unearth along the path.  Zoologist Sacred Scarab opens with a synesthete’s palette of blues and purples as a glorious blue lotus accord interplays with an emerging plum, highlighted by shimmering aldehydes and sparkling lemon. The blue lotus and plum (with vestiges of vintage Dior Poison) are along for most of the journey, even as the shimmer subsides and the plum evolves to a nectarous plum-wine. The lemon as well takes us to the heart of the composition, revealing itself to be the lemony facets of incense, in this case, an understructure created to honor an ancient Egyptian incense called kyphi.  According to Sultan Pasha, as revealed in an interview on the Zoologist website, “For this most auspicious project, I did a lot of research into the various kyphi formulas through the ages, but focused primarily on those recorded by the ancient Egyptians. I read various literary sources about this mystical substance and also attended seminars given by the renowned Egyptologist, Dora Goldsmith.” Sultan Pasha’s complex kyphi base includes notes of raisins, olibanum, myrrh, galbanum, cedar wood, juniper, wine, styrax, benzoin, oakmoss, labdanum, synthetic musk and amber. Thankfully, in lieu of what a dung beetle instinctually rolls, Sultan Pasha imagined the sacred scarab rolling balls of kyphi.

As the sweet and round heart of the perfume evolves to the basenotes, the hues of purple and blue turn to gold—at times dusty, at times polished. Myrrh and benzoin extend the perfume’s restrained sweetness, counterbalanced by a slight bitterness from the galbanum. The composition becomes decidedly darker as it wears on and yet—despite the inspiration—there is nothing unsettling, nothing to fear. The animalic notes, which include a synthetic civet used in the top, add a dimensional aliveness that purrs rather than growls.

In lesser hands, Zoologist Sacred Scarab could have been merely a high-concept art piece that one might respect, but never wear. In this case, Sultan Pasha has composed an opulent, elegant, wearable extrait de parfum which also happens to be a work of art. The journey is the treasure and I highly recommend you take this journey.

Zoologist Sacred Scarab is an extrait de parfum at 20% concentration with excellent longevity and projection. Samples are available now on the Zoologist website and full bottles will be available starting next month (July 2022). You can explore more of Sultan Pasha’s work, including his renowned attars, on his website Sultan Pasha Attars.

  • I am super excited for this release, as I’m a huge Zoologist fan! My favorite from the house would have to be Civet. I’ve heard wonderful things about Sultan Pasha.

This sounds absolutely decadent and as a fan of Indiana Jones as a child I can almost smell the history and passion of the perfume. Sounds luke a visit to Petra bottled. Excellent review Micheal.

Yup. This review makes me want to try it even more. The name alone of this fragrance is enough to get me interested and the quote from Howard Carter clinches it!

  • After reading your review of Sacred Scarab, I am really intrigued by the fragrance. Initially, I was not very excited one way or another for this release. However, the inspiration for the fragrance, the focus on kyphi, the inclusion of certain notes, and the ancient Egyptian mythology have really drawn me to Sacred Scarab. The plum, wine, raisins, and myrrh sounds like a delight. It looks like I will have to test this fragrance after all. I do love Zoologist and my favorites include Bee, Moth, Chipmunk, Cow, and Elephant. I really cannot wait for the big cat release; that is what I am most looking forward to from Zoologist!

  • One cannot help but being curious as this is Sultan’s first non-attar fragrance. I suspect his experience while creating this fragrance might have influenced him a lot as he has announced his own life of non-attar spray perfumes to be introduced in the near future.

  • Michael! ❤️❤️ Thank you for this fantastic review!!! What a wonderful & vibrant description of Sacred Scarab! I can’t wait to get my sample in the mail! I’ve experienced Civet de Nuit (a collaboration of Sultan Pasha with Russian Adam) and look forward to this project!

Is there a place to discover the Zoologist perfumes in France ?
Reading so often about them …

  • I own ensar rose and it’s the best attar out there. What an incredible collaboration and Micheal your review was like an essay. One of the best I have read on a zoologist perfume
Never leave comments usually but this deserves one

  • I tried most of Zoologist’s offerings and every single one is interesting. I wasn’t overwhelmed for a buy though, I think my favourite is the original Macaque. Here consider me curious! Sultan Pasha does a lot, and there happens to be magic at places. Tabac Grande is stunning. With a creative steering wheel like Viktor I wouldn’t be surprised of something huge! I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw!

  • Holy moly, This perfume SACRED SCARAB is mandatory for me to have in my collection. Thanks for the review. Sultan Pasha’s and Victor Wong’s name is sufficient for a perfume launch and will be sold like a hot cake. I can’t figure out which one is my favorite from the house of ZOOLOGIST but I enjoy wearing CIVET, BAT, BEAVER, HYRAX, MOTH, T REX, and RHINOCEROS. I do love Sultan Pasha’s attar and so far 3 of Sultan Pasha’s attars are in my collection.

  • Michael, thank you for the excellent review. You’ve described it perfectly!
Hard to pick a favorite Zoologist but I’m very partial to Squid
Have not tried any of Sultan’s scents yet, I need to remedy that.

  • Wonderful! I am very interested in the kyphi aspect. I have studied many formulae for kyphi and have made my own, with varied success. I am going to buy a sample of this right now.

  • I find zoologist to be such a unique house. I love Bee and think Macaque Yuzu is wonderful. Some are a bit too challenging for me, TRex. But others I toy with getting such as Camel and moth. Cow sounds lovely and now scarab! In maryland

  • I’ve been following the announcements for this fragrance—it’s the most excited I’ve been for a Zoologist release in sometime.

  • I was unsure at first about Zoologist Sacred Scarab due to its connection with dung beetle but I read on and true to Sultan Pasha’s reputation, Zoologist Sacred Scarab turned out to be much, much more. I have yet to try his creations, but I look forward to some day. Thanks for the review and links to various websites to try this and other perfumes. From USA.

I have several of Sultan’s attars and look forward to experiencing his Sacred Scarab. Who of us is not intrigued by the stories surrounding the discovery of Tuthankhamun’s tomb and what ancient perfumes could have been in jars present in the tomb? He’s a wonderful perfumer, so I don’t doubt this will be a beauty.

  • Lisa Speer says:

This sounds like a dream perfume to me! I already enjoy Camel and Civet. Can’t wait to try this!
