Glory be to God for dappled things —

For skies of couple-color as a brinded cow. ~ Pied Beauty, by Gerald Manley Hopkins

Sing-ho for pastoral pleasures! For a dewy dawn rising over the mist-engraved meadow where cows chew their cud, huddling against one another for warmth and camaraderie in their slow, deliberate fashion. I want to have eyes like a Jersey cow: utterly irresistible, immense and moonstruck. To be surrounded by summer clover, wild herbs, grasses and my fellow ruminators.

As a mother, I have already known what it is to nourish my young: the lactonic aroma of sweet mothers’ milk becomes part of the aura of breastfed infants. Thanks to award-winning perfumer Mme. Nathalie Feisthauer and her recent Arcadian fragrance for Creative Director Victor Wong of Zoologist, all noses may revel in the comforting veil of Zoologist Cow for its bucolic beauty.

Since its release, I’ve read multiple impressions of Zoologist Cow – which leads me to surmise that it hasn’t been well-understood. Many of Victor Wong’s previous fragrances have been robust, possessed of considerable sillage and tenacity – so I suspect that perfumistas may have come to anticipate this sort of leitmotiv. Cow is a departure, and to my nose a very welcome and delightful one at that. It presents a perfume of the tenderest sort, a lullaby composed in an orchard. Much like the gentle creatures I love to photograph, Zoologist Cow is a serenade to tranquility.

Zoologist Cow is personal for me. My backstory lies in a single regret: that I didn’t take advantage of my opportunity to attend Cornell’s veterinary medicine program. I’d dreamed of being a large farm animal vet, not unlike my mother’s cousin Hunter, a veterinarian in upstate NY who also kept a herd of Jersey cows. One can be foolish at such a young age, and I couldn’t see my way clear to 7 years of study at that time in my life (little did I foresee that I would devote at least as many in the future). The love that I bear bovines continues to follow me throughout the years – and now I have a perfume to evoke the pasture as well.

The initial spritz of Zoologist Cow beggars belief: it’s so grassy, and the employment of sage is brilliantly verdant. A very crisp green apple note comes into play; we’re lying in an orchard festooned with blossoms, embodied in the breath of muguet, heliotrope, violet (a verdant violet) and wisps of jasmine.

The lactonic milky nuance is clearly present, but it never overtakes the other elements; it resembles a wooing murmuration instead. Cow’s vivid fraîcheur softens rapidly and appreciably in repose, revealing the most pillowy base in which vetiver, musk, benzoin and amber resemble feathers in the wind. A lightness of being. Part of Zoologist Cow’s charm is its intimacy: there’s no trumpet fanfare. One is required to nestle close to the person it adorns – in the manner of inhaling the warm breath in the barn at milking time. There is peace and restfulness to be had at the push of a button.

I want to be a cow
and not my mother’s daughter.
I want to be a cow
and not in love with you.
I want to feel free to feel calm. ~ Cow, by Selima Hill

Notes: sage, apple, milk, lily of the valley, heliotrope, violet, jasmine, cedarwood, vetiver, benzoin, musks, amber

I purchased my bottle of Zoologist Cow. My nose is my own…

Like Ida, I have a fascination with cows and admire them often in my rural area that is home to many dairy and meat bovine creatures. I have been wanting to sniff Zoologist’s interpretation but haven’t yet had the chance and would love a 10 ml bottle. My current favorites from the brand are Squid, Snowy Owl and Chipmunk. I live in the US.

  • Cow is probably Zoologists most crowd pleasing release to date. Soft and easy to wear. I’ve heard a number of people liken it to a soft shampoo type fragrance. Zoologist happens to be my favorite house and my favorite offering is Civet. This review made me want to cuddle a cow, haha! Thanks from Canada.

  • I’m really interested in how the milk notes work with the herbal aspects of the scent – a lot of times lactonic notes are limited to really gourmand fragrances. My current favorite from the brand is Chipmunk. I’m in the US.

  • I haven’t tried this brand, yet, so no favorites, yet. It’s a very innovative concept, though, to have perfumes based on different animals. From Ida’s review, Cow seems to be gentle and has a peaceful vibe, much as cows are. I am curious how the milk note is blended in this perfume. I have never tried something similar. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA

  • What a wonderful review!
This sounds like a lovely fragrance, with ‘peace and restfulness to be had’.
I enjoyed Ida’s stories of cows and their allure.
I have not experienced many Zoologist perfumes, except for Hummingbird, which I liked very much.
    Thank you for the drawing.
    I am in the US.

  • I have been waiting for a review of cow. I enjoy several zoologist scents, actually adore bee, and I also find some extremely difficult to take (Trex). I hope this isn’t too floral. In maryland.

  • I like cows too. They remind me of gentleness and a pastoral calmness that ease my mind and put a smile on my face. The grassy notes and floral blossoms sound delightful opening a bed of pillowy musk and amber. The milk note is a must for this offering. My favorite Zoologist is Bat. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I love how Cow sounds like an almost a dichotomy between vegetal and dairy, like traipsing between sections at a nice grocery store (if you are like me and don’t make it nearly often enough to buy from actual farms). Sometimes I don’t have the best of luck with lactonic notes, mostly because they pull too sweaty, but I think the fresher aspects to this one might make it work on me. Per usual from Zoologist, the art is adorable! I am from USA.

“The cow is of the bovine ilk / One end is moo, the other milk.” Ogden Nash. Thank you for the wonderful review, Ida. I’ve been on the lookout for a soft, grassy, milky perfume and this sounds amazing. I’ve never tried a Zoologist perfume, believe it or not! I live in the USA.

I live in North Carolina and my favorite Zoologist fragrance is Bat.

Ida’s beautiful review made me think of the wonderful poem by Hayden Carruth called “The Cows at Night.” I quote part of it below:

I stopped, and took my flashlight
to the pasture fence. They turned
to me where they lay, sad

and beautiful faces in the dark,
    and I counted them–forty
near and far in the pasture,

turning to me, sad and beautiful
    like girls very long ago
    who were innocent, and sad

    because they were innocent,
    and beautiful because they were
sad. I switched off my light.

  • Per Ida’s review, Cow by Zoologist is a departure from other zoologist offerings. Cow is a tender scent, a serenade to tranquility and evokes the pasture also. Cow has a floral kind of opening with a lactonic milky nuance that is not overwhelming with a base of vetiver, musk, benzoin and amber. I dont have a favorite zoologist fragrance yet.
    Maryland, US.

  • Ohhh, this sounds delightful! I love milky notes in a perfume (Santal Blanc is a favorite), and am interested in this interpretation. Although many of Zoologist perfumes sound intriguing, I’ve never tried any of them. I’ve wanted to sniff Zoologist’s Civet, Seahorse, Snowy Owl and Hummingbird for ages.
I grew up in farm country on Eastern Long Island and have long had a fascination with cows, horses, and farm animals. One of my favorite spots to visit is my uncle’s farm in upstate NY. It’s located on lake Champlain, there’s a dairy farm right across the way – it’s one of the most peaceful locations on the planet for me to visit. I live in the US and I’d love the opportunity to try this scent…

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Love your review!! I just purchased a full bottle of Cow last week! It’s my first Zoologist full bottle (although more will follow, like Snowy Owl & Sacred Scarab). Cow is just perfect for the weather right now, so lovely and pastoral, yes. One truly gets a sense of those perfect mild summer days in the country. The apple is just right (the scent of eating a perfect apple outside on a picnic), with milk. This is a languorous summer day from one’s youth. The warmth of the base like the radiant sunlight of childhood. Totally carefree. What a gem! ❤️❤️❤️

  • John McDonald says:

This fragrance takes me back to summers going to my grandfather’s farm. Walking up to the milking barn. All the smells of cow, feed, cleaner, hay and milk along with the other scents wafting about.

  • What a unique fragrance. Love the image of a tranquil orchard with apple and floral notes. Wondering how the milk note would smell. I have wanted to try Zoologist for so long but never got the chance! I live in CA USA.

  • I am a fan of Zoologist fragrances, being Civet my favorite one.
I have never tried any milk note based fragrance so trying this one would be amazing. The green notes I think make this one special.
    USA here.

  • What interests me the most is how this fragrance seeks to replicate the floral elements of a pasture but with a milky note always present because it is after all, Cow. Thanks for the great draw! From Maryland USA

  • Gosh I love zoologist so much! Bee is one of my all-time favorite fragrances, and it was hard to find a scent that included beeswax in such a lovely way. So of course I am super interested in any Zoologist giveaway out there! Thank you Ida for reviewing Cow and describing the laconic elements and for including the poem/excerpt. Appreciate the giveaway – from Canada!

  • Thank you for the review and the beautiful images. This is sounds like a comforting and fresh fragrance I’d love to try. I’ve only tested Chipmunk from Zoologist and heard amazing things about Sacred Scarab. The artwork on the bottles is a treasure in and of itself. I’m in Texas where you see many cows on the country roads.

  • This is a very unique approach to perfumes that takes the perspective of not just nature’s greenery but also its animal life. Zoologist is a great niche house, and I would love to try this fragrance. From USA.

I love this interesting and intimate review by Ida. I hope she doesn’t regret her choices and not studying to be a veterinarian too much. I love how she describes this fragrance as very peaceful and intimate, and I must agree with this. I have tried a sample of Cow and I am very intrigued by its slightly milky scent in combination with grassy and fruity notes. To quote Ida this fragrance really does portray “A lightness of being. ” and that is why I find it so likable. I’m from Illinois US.

  • roxhas1cat says:

A lullaby in an orchard sounds good to me. Cows are always so peaceful and take the time to really chew their food. Never in a rush. We could learn from the cows. My Dad grew up on a farm and I’ve heard many stories of that time in his life. The notes sound really nice. Love the photographs. I have only smelled on from Zoologist and that was Bee. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What specifically interests me about this nez offering, is its softness, which is a Departement from my Norm. That, along with the fact that its quite versant, makes it a must-try for me.

I haven’t tried a Zoologist ad of yet, but besides Cow, I would like to sample: bat, bee, camel, panda, moth…….

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • foreverscents says:

I enjoyed reading Ida’s backstory, about wanting to be a farm animal vet. I also enjoyed the way Ida described the tender aspects of Cow. It certainly sounds like wearing cow s wearing a lullaby. I love all the notes in this fragrance, the grassier the better.
I like Nightingale from Zoologist Perfumes.
    I live in the USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful review Ida! What specifically interests me about Ida’s review is how she describes it as a big departure from most of the Zoologist perfumes, which are known for their bold and shocking aggressiveness. Rather, Ida describes Cow as comforting, tender, and gentle, with the nurturing and nourishing aura of milk, which sounds like something so new for Zoologist that I definitely want to try it.

My favorite Zoologist fragrance that I’ve tried so far is Musk Deer – a lovely and sensual floral musk. I live in the US.

  • How interesting to be so influenced by an idyllic image of country cows– it’s like a moment out of time… Anyway, this sounds fantastic, and though I’ve never tried a Zoologist scent, I’ve been dying to!
    (USA)

  • Beautiful review, Ida. I appreciated that you were able to connect to this fragrance personally. I love the Zoologist brand, even though I find many of their fragrances challenging to wear, so I’ll happily sample anything new they release. (Squid and Sloth are my favorites, and Chameleon is an easy summer wear.) Cow is an intriguing departure; a pastoral, milky fragrance fills a unique role in the Zoologist catalogue, and strikes me as an unusual fragrance in general. It’s also good to hear that Cow isn’t as tenacious and potentially off-putting as some earlier Zoologist expressions. The floral opening sounds lovely, as does the airy, pillowy base. Can’t wait to try this one.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

Thank you for the great review Ida.

Another wonderful and wierd fragrance from the Zoologist brand – this one more subtle and gentle, like the good nature of that pastoral animal.

I love how this fragrance evokes the laconic qualities of milk, the gentle subtleties of the creaminess and the green open and floral qualities of a pasture.

My favourite has to be the OG Bat/ NightFlyer

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I’m really interested about Zoologist Cow based on Ida’s review because perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer and Creative Director Victor Wong of Zoologist have come up with something special here. A Lactonic fragrance, but not overly so infused with green, aromatic, floral, and pastoral facets that sound really intriguing. I’ve always appreciated Victor Wongs creativity when it comes to Zoologist fragrances. My favorite Zoologist fragrance is Bee. I’m from Ohio, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve never tried anything from this company, and I haven’t tried anything which was made by perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer so I’m interested in trying what they’ve made/released. I’m interested to see what the milk note is like and in combination w/ the other notes. I’d like to see if this fragrance can cause me to think of a cattle pasture. I live in the U.S.A.

  • minteacup says:

Besides the lovely description of the fragrance, I liked Ida’s personal anecdote about her veterinary dreams. My cousins are dairy farmers, so I also feel like I have a bit of a connection to cows. 🙂 Though I do think the ideal of the sunny meadow is almost universally appealing. I would be very happy to try Zoologist Cow. My favorite Zoologist perfumes are Hummingbird and Civet. I live in the US. Thank you for the draw!

  • LightOfJoy says:

My favorite Zoologist is perhaps Musk Deer, although I haven’t been able to try them all. I’ve also enjoyed both older versions of Bat and Beaver. A lactonic green perfume sounds intriguing.

I enjoyed Ida’s review because of the detailed love of cows. I enjoy a good personal backstory reference.

    I live in Texas, USA.

  • Sleeping.Squire says:

I enjoy the idea this scent is light and more noticable when close to the individual wearing it. The review is very well written. My personal favourite from the brand is Moth. Thanks from Canada!
