Zoologist Chipmunk Review (Pia Long) 2021 + An Enchanted Forest Draw

Zoologist Chipmunk review

A scent trail of a nocturnal animal is wafting in the air. A whiff of warm fur, animalic and slightly sweet, takes us down the rabbit hole of the enchanted forest and everything we smell as we descend into the universe of cute creatures that have quite the stories to tell. How do you picture a Chipmunk would smell like in the magical story told by Victor Wong, the man behind the genius idea of scent portraits for various characters of the animal kingdom, is here yet again with one intriguing work of olfactory art.

A peculiar composition starts with a strange whiff of damp earth, spicy and aromatic. It smells of leaves, trees, and everything we inhale in the late autumn months when the animal world is hard at work collecting the last harvests, prepping for the long winter ahead. I say primarily peculiar because I find it quite fascinating how usually juicy quince combined with cardamom, nutmeg, and pink pepper can smell earthy and quite dark as it does in Zoologist Chipmunk. Perhaps the base and the heart of the fragrance shines through in the first few minutes, slowly giving way to the brightness of the mandarin and quince only

The journey into the magical forest continues as if the little creatures invite you up into the branches, offering a dazzling vantage point from which to enjoy the rich golden and russet hues of the changing seasons. You feel like you are in a parallel universe filled with tiny little animal personas, each with their character, attitude, and scent trail.

Chipmunks scurry among the detritus in their quest to collect the plumpest acorns, leaving you to your senses to enjoy the aroma of it all around you. They eagerly gather what they can and, cheeks bulging with nuts, scamper home to line their snug burrows before falling leaves give way to biting snow. The heart opens up all the milky nuttiness of the fragrance, warm and comforting. It cozies up to you like a soft touch of fur on your skin, as if a tiny little chipmunk brushed against you while running past you with its mouth full of hazelnuts.

The dry down feels like the golden sunset slowly caressing the forest, like a lullaby to all the beautiful creatures that call it home. The harvest has been gathered, and the day is over. It’s time to rest inside the oldest oak tree in the forest, where hundreds of passages lead to tiny little homes. The smell of warm benzoin and dry vetiver lining the walls creates a sense of comfort and raw nature. A touch of animalic notes and sweet resin of guaiac wood completes the picture. Bravo, Mr. Wong, Brava Ms. Pia Long! Zoologist Chipmunk is yet another Zoologist perfume portrait, painted with precision and vivid imagination. It was quite a journey. It’s time to end the story. I feel myself drifting to the land of dreams, or was I dreaming this whole time?

The perfume was kindly gifted to me, but my opinions are always my own.

Notes: Quince, Pink Pepper, Red Mandarin, Cardamom, Nutmeg; Chamomile, Hazelnut, Fir Balsam Absolute, Oak Absolute, Earthy Notes; Cedarwood, Amyris, Patchouli, Vetiver, Benzoin Resin, Opoponax, Guaiacwood, Animal Notes* (Synthetic Notes. Zoologist Chipmunk does not use animal products.)

I really enjoyed how Olya, while unraveling the fragrance notes and smell for us, did it while making the fragrance sound playful and whimsical. I’m glad she was able to take us on her journey (“was quite a journey. It’s time to end the story. I feel myself drifting to the land of dreams, or was I dreaming this whole time?”)

Definitely want to get my nose on this, as this notes sound fantastic, and this would begin my virgin into Zoologist.

Chipmunks are certainly fascinating creatures, and it appears that Mr. Wong did an amazing job of capturing this little creature. I like the description of the magical forest and the scurrying chipmunk. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Great review olya
I have been meaning to try zoology but maybe this will be my lucky day. I like how they don’t use animal products

  • I absolutely love the cute way you visualized this scent! I could picture it all and almost could smell it! This scent sounds really intriguing with all of the earthy notes juxtaposed with the sweet nutty notes and fruity touches. I would love to win this one! I am located in the US 🙂

  • Wonderful review Olya. I been hearing so much about this Fragrance house and would love to try Chipmunk. The earth, Forest, autumn time of the year. Sounds perfect for Fall. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • I always try new Zoologist releases eventually—it’s one of my favorite perfume brands. I love the high-concept artistry, I love the artwork, and I’m a fan of some of the perfumers that lend their skills to Wong’s Zoologist releases.

Thank you for the wonderful review Olya! This one sounds like it might be a little sweeter than I generally prefer, but the way you describe the “comfort and raw nature” drydown is intriguing. I also like other peppery, autumn-inspired fragrances, but one with an animalic side would be new to me.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Brava Olya, your prose is genius; thank you for taking me into the autumn forest on this dream journey with you. I haven’t tried Zoologist, but now want to explore Chipmunk (at least) for the golden sunset dry down. NC USA

  • I’ve been meaning to order a sample of Chipmunk forever. Cardamom is one of my favorite notes and I’ve been looking for a nutty scent that will actually last on my skin. And the art on the bottle is so adorable! I am from New England, USA.

  • the animalic nature of this fragrance paired with the sweet and nutty lactic experience is truly interesting. US location.

  • Enjoyed Olya’s beautiful review!
Sounds very interesting – earthy start with smell of leaves and earth, than milky nuttiness of hazelnut, nutmeg!!

  • Zoologist is such a fun concept for a house. The connection of the fragrances to the animals they’re named after always seem well thought out. And the results are perfumes that are often hard to imagine had the concept not existed (I’m thinking of, e.g. the original Bat). Olya does a brilliant job connecting Chipmunk to its animal inspiration. And I love perfumes that feature nutty notes. I’d love a chance to win a bottle. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • I absolutely adore this fragrance and was so excited to see you review it! Your images are always perfection and capture the nutty, adorable furriness of the fragrance. Bravo too, dearest Olya! Thank you to Fragrance Vault too for the draw. I’m in the US!

  • What a joyful review and description from Olya! It brought a memory to mind. I was a teenager who was home sick from school one day, and I went outside to get some fresh air. I looked down from our back patio to the forest floor below to see chipmunks playing everywhere. I was very familiar with squirrels, but all of a sudden it seemed chipmunks had taken over. I saw more in that moment than I’ve seen before or since my entire life. I watched them for quite a while in awe.

I’m in Houston, TX, USA. Thank you your review, and for holding this drawing.

  • The earthy, animalic nature of Zoologist Chipmunk combined with the fruity and nutty lactic experience interests me. Never tried this brand, but the concept is very interesting, especially as they don’t use animal products. Wonderful review Olya. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • I love how Olya was so successful at taking us on a journey through this magical and dreamy forest while she was describing Chipmunk. By the end it left this reader quite interested in finding out all about this “peculiar composition”. This just so happens to be one of my friends’ favorite offering from the house so it’s nice to hear another sterling review on its behalf. Not to mention, the house has such a fantastic reputation within the world of perfumery. “Zoologist Chipmunk is yet another Zoologist perfume portrait, painted with precision and vivid imagination.”; with a commendation like that, how can anyone not be intrigued?! It would be an honor for this to be my first foray into the house of Zoologist so thank you, as always, for the opportunity. Cheers from Illinois!

  • While my tastes have expanded (a lot), my desire to smell like damp earth is what got me into perfume in the first place, several years ago, and it’s still probably the #1 thing i want to smell like. Olya’s description is so evocative! I’d so love to smell this. I live in New York, USA.

  • Olya!! ❤️❤️ Fantastic review!!! I need to get my sample out & experience Chipmunk! Fragrance Vault is Amazing, by the way! ❤️ If anyone is looking for vintage bottles, great customer service, & absolute trust in quality & authenticity, check out Fragrance Vault! ❤️ Really, what I need to do is take a pause in sample purchasing (I have a backlog to work through). Anyone else get into this situation? The last Zoologist samples I experienced were: Bee, Seahorse, and Squid (all of which I loved). Olya’s description of the “oldest oak tree in the forest” with fall leaves and damp, earthy and animalic touches makes me want to wear this right away! Especially, I’d like to compare it to Bee (I’ve heard this is a great alternative if Bee was too thickly sweet). I respect a brand that has such an interesting ethical mooring and sets itself such creative limits/ideas. ❤️ Thank you for the opportunity! USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

I really love this one (enough to include it on my best of 2021 list) and Olya did an amazing job of putting into words how well Pia translated a chipmunk into a cozy, comforting fragrance. I definitely have this on my full bottle list. Thanks for the draw! US

  • Bravo Olya! What an epic fragrance description. You perfectly paint the picture of this amaaaazing fragrance and it’s development. I was so excited when I heard this was coming out because I adore chipmunks. As soon as I tried it Chipmunk became my favorite Zoologist. It is so lovely, sweet soft and very wearable. I still didn’t get a full bottle but it is the number one on my “to buy” list. This one I have to own. Fragrance as cute and cuddly as the real animal. Love Love. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved the portrait Olya created with words of an earthy, oaky scent that combines plant material, roots, leaves, wood, fruits, and animal notes. I especially liked hearing how the earthy materials tempered the fruitiness of quince. Thanks so much for this generous draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Chipmunk is such an unusual fragrance . I’m attracted to its complexity, smell , and the way it reminiscent the natural habitat of chipmunks
Dampy, aromatic, green and natural sweetness, I’d like to know Chipmunk
Thank you Olya, and Fragrance Vault

  • Olya’s review brings to mind an interesting twist of autumnal spices, fallen leaves, and sweet mandarin. Is Chipmunk a mulled spice in perfume form? Hoping to win this draw to find out, as I love the Zoologist line and own a few already.

  • Autumn is my favorite season and I love animals, so I have always been drawn to Zoologist fragrances. When Chipmunk was released, I knew I had to try it. Not only do I love chipmunks, but I also love the notes in the fragrance. I appreciate Olya’s descriptive review of Chipmunk. The fragrance really evokes a magical forest with its notes of earth, spices, and nutty facets. As Olya points out, Chipmunk is another precise portrait of an animal in the form of a fragrance. In addition to Bee and Moth, Chipmunk is in my top three Zoologist fragrances; it’s just a beautiful autumnal fragrance that perfectly represents the tiny animal it aims to capture. Thank you, Olya, for the article, and thank you to Fragrance Vault for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • matt2thepatt says:

Chipmunks fill the yards and gardens of my apartment building every year. They’re adorable. Olya’s review brings to mind a scent of late autumn full of fallen leaves, mulled spices and a sweet kiss of mandarin. I’m curious to find if the fragrance lives up to her scent picture. Much love from New Hampshire!

  • One things for sure, this is no squirrely review. Olya down to earth review captured my interest in seeing what this fragrance smells like on someone like me living here in the nutty USA.

  • I loved the imagery used in Olya’s review, it really paints a picture of what the fragrance is trying to accomplish. I’m in NY.

  • I must admit I am very influenced by the drawings on Victor’s bottles, and this adorable little squirrel scout has been on my radar to try. I am already predisposed to love it, but reading Ola’s description, I think I just might really like it! I’m in USA

  • sillage4ever says:

Olya’s review draws out the whimsical fun of Zoologist in general and Chipmunk in particular, how can one not smile at the very concept of a chipmunk-themed perfume? I think Bat is genius and hope this one reaches for the treetops as well.

    I’m in the USA, thanks.

  • Camel is in my possession. When I smelled it , I knew and I had to get it. Dried Fruits Cake , with incense and slightly funky nuances .
After reading Olya Bar take on Chipmunk , I imagined making Meshgengouz Gargantag , mostly known as Armenian Nutmeg Cake, with almonds and walnuts, and eating it while having a picnic somewhere in the woods.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I am always curious about fragrances with animal notes in it, and I love how Olya gives picture to this beautiful perfume. I am fascinated by how she creates an image in my head that make me feels like hallucinating or something! Well that is some next level writing right there!
The combination of the spices will surely bring comforting feels to this one. I heard about zoologist and always good things are mentioned. I would love to try this one!
Thank you to Fragrance Vault for sharing this one!
    Cheers from USA

  • I’ve certainly heard of this fragrance house but I still haven’t tried anything from them yet, and I am interested to try their collected works. This fragrance seems like it’s not similar to anything which I have in my fragrance collection. I can like a lot of the notes which are listed for this, and I hope that the “animal” notes are not too prominent. Olya’s review caused me to think that this fragrance is nutty, earthy, spicy, aromatic, and sweet. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Kr1ms0nk1ng says:

Guaiacwood and spices, along with this golden sunset upon the forest description by Olya, sounds reminiscent of Kenzo Jungle Homme, and in a-similar-but-to-a-lesser-extent Kenzo Tokyo. Raw, animalic, and slightly sweet – sounds like a winning combination!

Tried Squid and Seahorse, but not quite my cup of tea – looking forward to further exploring the brand!

  • Oh boy! I really love Zoologist fragrances. The earthy, daring and animalic notes they use are unique. I really enjoy Olya´s review of Chipmunk because it gives me a clear idea on how it is. The earthy, animalic, fury notes with a hint of sweetness makes it really unique. The Zoologist house is truly genius in their creation. Hope I can win this one.

Very detailed view! I love the brand’s concept. My favorite from the house are Camel and Musk Deer. I am from New York, USA. Hopefully I can win the draw!

  • Ok what do we have here? Rich, deep nutty fragrance, and with lots of wods , resins , well I guess Zoologist Fragrances do deserve all the praises they get online.
I’m new to Zoologist, Chipmunk is artisanal fragrance i’d love to win
    Thanks for the draw

  • I’ve tried several of the Zoologist fragrances and I’ve been impressed by their uniqueness and quality. Chipmunk seems to be a worthy addition. I’m glad to see that the overall effect is earthy and as Olya says, like a “magical forest”. The quince and resin notes are of particular interest to me. I’m in MD, USA.

  • That was a very descriptive review by Olya. I have not tried a zoologist fragrance yet but this review makes it sound unique and very appealing. This review makes me want to try more zoologist fragrances as well.
    Greetings from Columbia, MD

  • Hendrix Wilson says:

What interest me the most about this fragrance review was how Zoologist name the fragrance and the notes that gives the weight to the name. It makes it seem as if it is the natural smell around the chipmunk doing his work preparing for the winter. Ingenious!!!

Olya’s description of the forest was transporting and evocative. Reminds me of camping in autumn. I live in California and would love to be entered into the draw.

  • I have been so curious to try Zoologist fragrances but there was never one that I thought would suit my tastes. Chipmunk, on the other hand, sounds wonderful with all those woody notes. It’s hard to come across a fragrance that contains a hazelnut note. It happens to be one of my favorites. And I really enjoyed the description of the drydown – “The dry down feels like the golden sunset slowly caressing the forest, like a lullaby to all the beautiful creatures that call it home.” I’d be thrilled to finally add a Zoologist fragrance to my collection!
    I live in the USA.

Olya vividly painted a picture as she took us on a journey through a magical forest. Chipmunk sounds amazing! I’m in NJ

  • I saw this on the Instagram before reading the review and was already excited. The Zoologist fragrances are incredibly interesting to me. The way they interpret and tell the story is amazing. I am in the US.

  • Thank you Olya for your descriptive review and bringing this fragrance to life for me. I really enjoy how Victor Wong and Zoologist bring these caricatures of creatures to life through his olfactive creations. Before experiencing this house, I don’t believe I’d ever try a fragrance named “Camel”…but as it turns out, this is one of my favorites from the house. I have not had my nose on Chipmunk, yet. However, if I get lucky with this giveaway, it may happen sooner than I expected. Looking forward to it! I live in Willow Grove, PA, USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I still have not sampled anything from this house and I’m not entirely sure why. This sounds like a comforting fragrance. I used to love watching the chipmunks scurry in my yard when I was a child. Thanks for the draw, from the US.

  • I am a fan of zoologists fragrances, my current favorite is Bee, although I do love camel, koala, panda, and moth. I have tried chipmunk and find it to be Nutella to me. The hazelnut is so forward when I smell it. Perfect for this crisp time of year. In maryland.

  • A magical forest with hazelnuts…..sounds awesome. The chipmunk portion freaked me out as I was bitten by one as a child, but I’d love to win this fragrance. I have never smelled anything from this house USA.

  • A forest scent with animalic undertones. Olya what a delightful way to create a quick trip through the woods from a chipmunk’s perception and weave in the various notes found in this fragrance. I’m a fan of several of the noted spices, so this seems like it would be a wonderful addition to my shelf.

I am in North Carolina, USA

  • What strikes me about Olya Bar review , is the realistic approach to the fragrance , the perfumer captured the Autumn forest, ripe fruits, and nuts , all in one 60ml extrait bottle called Chipmunk .
From Zoologist, I like Bee . I was surprised how thick and sweet it was. Felt like if there’s bee , hornets or wasp swarms nearby they will attack me drawn from the smell of the fragrance.
    Thank you for the opportunity

Thanks for the great review Olya.

I always make it a point to not read the notes of a zoologiest fragrance before spraying it on. I find that way it evokes a better realization of that animal that is the inspiration.’

I’ve deliberately skipped the notes here, but I enjoyed reading about the evolution of the fragrance

    I adore Zoologist Squid.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Zoologist fragrances are certainly innovative and Olya’s description of Chipmunk is beautifully written. I love the artwork on Zoologist’s bottles. In CA, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Olya’s review of Zoologist Chipmunk is how Olya paints the perfect picture of venturing into the forest in the fall/autumn months with all the earthy, woody, nutty, damp, and animalic facets you would experience in the eyes of a chipmunk getting ready for their winter hibernation. Zoologist has a way of perfectly creating each fragrance to depict the animal and environment they are portraying. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • This sounds very different from what I’d expect from any but some very fringe-y houses, and I love that. I’ve wanted to try any/all Zoologist scents for quite a while. (SoCal, USA)

  • I do love how Olya painted such a complete picture in my head, right down to the smells and the light. Lovely! I have never tried any Zoologist fragrances, but have heard such wonderful things about them. I live in the US. (Missouri)

  • I am co-owner of two bee farms, and I believe it was 2 years ago, when I read about Zoologist Bee on Cafleurebon, I sampled it, and as soon as I smelled it, I knew I had to buy it.
Bee is true attention grabber , Chipmunk on the other hand is more relaxing, sitting on the porch, or laying in the hammock kind of fragrance.
Fragrance with, like Olya said sense of comfort, and raw nature . Such a counterbalance to the loud , overload of honey Bee
    Exciting giveaway, USA

Very nice review Olya! What interested me about Olya’s review of Zoologist Chipmunk is how she describes it as a journey into a magical forest, with rich golden hues, damp earth, aromatic spices, and mysterious woods, with the slightly funky animalic notes of friendly woodland creatures that just might burst out into song! It definitely sounds straight out of a parallel universe, or a fairy tale! I live in the US.

  • Such a vivid review by Olya, I almost felt like I’m in a forest myself.
I’m familiar with all , prior to 2021 Zoologist Fragrances, the latest offerings 5-6 i don’t know, including Chipmunk
I like everything about it, the sweetness , the nutty elements, the touches of spices, all of it. Let’s see what Victor Wong envisioned about the Chipmunk way of life, and how Pia Long implemented his ideas.
If I have to rate my favorite Zoologist fragrances:
    1. Camel
    2. Bee
    3. Bat
Camel , and Bat i own , i mean original version of Bat
