Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle 1165 Madison Avenue

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle 1165 Madison Avenue exterior

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is renowned for its unique approach to perfumery and its collaborations with some of the world’s most talented perfumers (Dominique Ropion, Jean-Claude EllenaOlivia Giacobetti, Maurice Roucel, Carlos Benaïm, to name a few). The new Flagship Store, situated on New York’s prestigious Madison Avenue, bestows a luxurious shopping experience where customers can discover a diverse range of fragrances. The boutique’s elegant design and knowledgeable staff deliver an inviting atmosphere, allowing customers to encounter and appreciate the art of perfumery.

When I came up with the term ‘Editeur de Parfums,’ I was determined to liberate perfumers from the kinds of restraints often imposed by marketers and focus groups. I give these ‘fragrance authors’ complete freedom to explore and express their ideas. Each perfumer is free to use the most innovative technologies and the rarest raw materials the industry offers. This freedom drives the artist to construct a scent without conventional boundaries and to refine his or her idea and formula to the most precise detail. When it is achieved, I publish it at Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.” Frédéric Malle

In late 2009, Madison Avenue’s fragrance transformation began with Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, Diptyque, and Creed opening within a couple of months of each other, joining Jo Malone and Bond No. 9 New York. Things were smelling sweeter uptown. The Frederic Malle Madison Avenue boutique arrived ten years after Malle unveiled the first boutique in Paris. The 900-square-foot location was designed as a comfortable living space, reminiscent of a stately apartment or home with a warm heritage atmosphere. It was in contrast to the sleek and medicinal aesthetics of many of the other modern perfumeries. The boutique featured three of Malle’s trademark smelling columns, in which consumers can test scents from the brand’s fragrances in an enclosure the size of a phone booth. By 2024, its antique furniture and 1930s French art, faux fireplace (shipped from Paris), curtains, and wall-to-wall brown, geometric-printed carpeting had developed an old fashioned vibe. It was time for a redo.

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle now located at 1165 Madison Avenue

Over the years, I spent many hours visiting the original boutique to discover new scents or at events. So, it was a bolt out of the blue when informed of the move. I have to admit the boutique became that comfortable sweater you can’t toss, but you know that it’s time to, and purchase a new replacement. What’s the difference? The former had Frederic Malle’s traditional appearance, while the new location has Estée Lauder’s modern slant.

“Fragrance is about comfort, so it was important to have decor that conveys this idea.” Frédéric Malle

Estee Lauder closed the original location on 72nd Street in January 2025, and moved Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle fourteen blocks north to Madison Avenue and 85th Street. The flagship store re-opened six months later, on May 26th, 2025. The new 550-square-foot store, located on the ground floor of a luxury residential building, was designed in-house by Estée Lauder’s creative team. And not to worry, Frédéric Malle’s signature red and “scenting chambers” are present, front and center. The store plays into the brand’s larger strategy to foster engagement with its core consumer base through experiential eventing and to deepen consumers’ knowledge of the brand’s core products.

(New fragrant neighbors include D.S. & Durga, Aesop, Le Labo (Estee Lauder), Fueguia 1833, and Coty Infiniment Paris).

I had the pleasure of speaking with Store Director Blerta Gocaj to gather some insight into what has transpired in this short time.

Hernando Courtright: How was the location decided upon?

Store Director Blerta Gocaj: “With Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle as a brand being so entrenched in the art world, it only seemed fitting to move to a neighborhood that sits at this intersection of art, culture, and fashion. We have the Met, the Guggenheim, and the Frick within a short walking distance, and we feel at home at the center of all this in the new neighborhood.

In the short time you’ve been at the new location, are you finding the customer clientele different from what you had at the previous address?

Blerta Gocaj: “We have been fortunate to have some of our most valuable and long-standing friends and clientele visit as they rediscover us at our new location. We have consistently kept in touch, and each day brings familiar faces back into the store.

We have also had the fortune of being amid a more dynamic clientele that has brought new clients in who are both familiar and unfamiliar with the brand. Being on 72nd and Madison for 18 years meant that we had become the corner shop where everyone felt comfortable popping in, saying hi, stopping in for a chat, and/or coffee, and we are hoping to mirror that same atmosphere and put down our roots yet again at this new location. We look forward to having these new clients become tomorrow’s friendly neighbor who feels welcome to come on in.”

Breakdown (approx.) of scents, candles, and ancillary products?

Blerta Gocaj: We have kept a pretty good consistency in terms of home and body. We have some SKUs that are undergoing repackaging, but we have continued to see the steady admiration of both our home and body collections. Jurassic Flower has continued to be our #1 SKU in home, and mostly is in part due to it being showcased at our neighboring Mark Hotel.

Are the choices of perfumes purchased different? Anything surprise you?

Blerta Gocaj: We have seen a pretty consistent sell-through between both stores. Portrait of a Lady (Dominique Ropion), of course, continues to be our #1 across the board, but we do see a great growth in some of our more unique SKUs like Angeliques Sous la Pluie (Jean-Claude Ellena) and Music For a While (Carlos Benaim).

I will be sure to stop by the store the next time I am in New York as Frédéric Malle is a beautiful and classic house. I am surprised to not see Acne Studios as one of their best-sellers; sure it’s a new scent but it’s been making the rounds online and some vitality has come out of it. I own Portrait Of A Lady myself and it’s an iconic scent for sure for the house and the world of perfumery. The store looks impeccable and red-hot on the inside and very attractive to anyone walking by. Should I win, I’d love to receive the men’s coffret. I’m located in the USA.

  • Thank you Hernando for letting us know of this move and asking instructive questions. My partner is head over heels in love with Portrait of a Lady and I’m smitten with Musc Ravageur. I’ll go for The Women’s Essential Collection Coffret if lucky to be selected. Thank you for the kind giveaway. I’m in USA

  • Thank you for the update, Hernando! You’re always in the right place at the right time.

I’m an immense fan of the brand: my first Malles were Le Parfum de Thérèse and Vetiver Extraordinaire. One son is purely Angéliques Sous La Pluie!
I would be thrilled to win the women’s sampler.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoyed reading about the changes made for the new Frederic Malle location. It was nice to see that the scenting chambers were still present the new location. I would love to win The Men’s Essential Collection Coffrett. I live in Maryland USA.

  • It’s good to know that Malle has retained its identity after the purchase by Lauder. I’ve tried several Malle perfumes and liked them a lot… but have resisted the impulse to buy so far. Maybe the coffret will get me there. My wife would probably like the women’s choices, so let’s try that one if I win.

  • The warmth of the staff and the sense that while sophisticated the store is still genuinely welcoming comes across vibrantly. I look forward to stopping next time I’m in the area. I am located in the US

  • Stephanie Turro says:

Believe it or not, at age 54, I am just beginning my fragrance journey!

I am a teacher, and particularly enjoyed reading the history of Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and the vision of allowing perfumers the time/space/resources to explore their creative genius to the fullest. When you empower people to create without limits, you positively impact the world in ways that are both readily evident and also not so easily seen.

The new flagship looks amazing, and exactly what I’d expect a modern flagship with this history to look like. The “scenting chambers” at the front of the house are calling me — and I live in Florida!

I’d be absolutely thrilled to win the women’s sampler; thanks for the opportunity!

  • Oh I did not know that there was a store in NYC for M. Malle. have sniffed his scents at the seattle nordstrom, and En Passant is my favorite, but all of his scents are really really nice. Should I ever get back to NYC, I will definitely be in the museum neighborhood, and will stop by. I would love to win the women’s coffre. Thank you for the lovely review and the generous draw from here in wa state.

  • What I enjoyed the most of Hernando’s is that it reminded me that during my travels to NY I haven’t yet made it to Frederic Malle. That needs to be corrected. I should be returning to the City come the new year. Time must be set aside for a trip Uptown. I’m located in the US and would be interested in the men’s coffret.

  • I love the idea of the scenting chambers! I also appreciated Frédéric Malle’s own quote that the decor should reflect the comfort aspect of fragrance and how the staff hope to continue the “corner shop” neighborhood feel in the new location. So far the only Frédéric Malle I have tried is En Passant, but it is so gorgeous that it is one of the few full bottles that I have purchased in my relatively early fragrance journey. I would love to win the Women’s Coffret. I am in the US.

  • Smelling columns? That is something I have never heard of before! I would love to try it! I would also love to get my nose on the Ladies Coffret!
    Mary in Pennsylvania

  • The store is absolutely stunning!! Thanks to Hernando for visiting for us who live across the country. I love Frederic’s philosophy, hopefully Estée Lauder is keeping that freedom for the “fragrance authors”. My favorite of the line is Lipstick Rose. I’d love to win the women’s set. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Hernando took us trough the old location of Frédéric Malle store to the new one in 2 paragraphs. Bravo.

I own 2 Frédéric Malle in my collection, and I want to add more. Hopefully, if I win this giveaway,The Men’s Essential Collection Coffret includes all the ones I am interested in trying,
What a treat. 7ml of those jewels.

From Massachusetts, and hoping to visit the NY store soon.

  • I would love to visit some day. The review was lovely but my favorite part was the images of this beautiful establishment. I love that the iconic red is so prominent throughout the building. I would love to win The Women’s Essential Collection Coffret. I’m in the USA

  • Beautiful store. I’m always jealous of how NY has all the nice boutiques, where I am in California we have a lot of luxury retailers but not many boutiques that are focused on perfumery. I’ve only had the pleasure of smelling Music for a While from the house, I had got a sample for Neiman Marcus and I loved it for it’s realistic pineapple smell. Would love to be able to go to their boutique and smell the all. The Men’s essential collection would be a great alternative to flying out to NY. Thanks. USA

  • Thank you for the update. The new location looks great – hoping I’ll get an opportunity to visit soon. I think this is my favorite perfume house and love many of their scents……En Passant, Portrait of a Lady, L’eau d’ Hiver and others. The women’s coffret interests me most. I’m in the USA

  • I appreciate that the new location is at the intersection of various art forms, it just makes sense! The scenting chambers sound so unique and i would LOVE to check out the new ambience. Compressing the footprint will hopefully make the space more intimate and just as inviting as the prior. I would be over the moon happy to receive the Men’s Essential Coffret. My favorite scent thus far is Musc Ravageur. Cheers from Ohio! 🙂

  • What a stunning space! The new Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle boutique on Madison Avenue strikes a perfect balance between luxury and intimacy — like a refined Parisian salon in the heart of New York. I’ve always admired the brand’s philosophy of giving perfumers true creative freedom. I’d be thrilled to experience the Essential Collection and discover these iconic fragrances firsthand! I want the women’s Coffret

  • rachel wiener says:

Thanks hernando for letting me know ow about the new store! I have plans to take my mother in Law to the Frick this fall so we’ll be sure to stop in. Malle is a brand I’ve been slow to dive into and have only tried maybe 3? I loved Musk Ravageur and En Passent. Count me in for the women’s coffee draw. I’m in Brooklyn, NY

  • I would love to bid it the boutique. I think my favorite Malle is Promise. I also love Musc Ravageur, Carnal Glower and Music For a While. I do love a lot of them actually, I would love to win the men’s collection as there are a few there I have not tried. Thank you for the chance to win!
I am located in the U.S.

  • I wish I lived closer to the East Coast to visit this store. Also, glad that they have kept the signature red, and most of all the scenting chambers. Thanks, Hernando, for this review, and to the team at Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle for this generous draw. I would like the women’s coffret.USA reader

  • Amazing. I’ve loved this house for a long time. What a great time for NYC with all of these new boutiques opening up. I’ve been to the original but had no idea they moved to a new location. I would choose the Men’s collection.

  • So much history, a shame to see that go. But glad that they have kept some of the original ideas such as the scent chambers. I’d love the women’s collection. In maryland.

  • I enjoyed hearing that they have scent booths to experience scents instead of spraying everything everywhere. I would want to try the women’s coffret. I haven’t tried any yet.

  • What a wonderful place to get lost in for a few hours. I’ll be sure to seek it out next time I’m in NYC. Carnal Flower was my introduction to Frederic Malle. A great ode to tuberose for those who love the note. I’ve tried several since then including En Passage, Iris Poudre, Lipstick Rose and Musc Ravageur. I would love the Women’s Essential Coffrett. MD, USA

  • Interesting scent profile. Definitely getting this for my wife this year. Thank you for the article. I am from USA.

  • My daughter and mother both live in NYC, but they’re both very much downtown people…as am I when I visit. So the world of uptown boutiques like both the old and the new Frédéric Malle shops is a bit foreign to me. It was nice to be introduced to it by Hernando! It’s been years since I’ve gotten my nose on a Frédéric Malls perfume, but I remember liking Carnal Flower a lot…though I don’t think I could pull off wearing it. Should I win, I’d love to receive the men’s coffret. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

I love the story behind the Frédéric Malle line, pure anabashed creativity.

The store design seems to be an extension of that idea.

Would love to try either the mens or womens coffret.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Daniel Rutan says:

Well I will certainly be adding a stop at the new boutique to my next trip to NYC!! I have been a fan of the house for some time and the “scenting chambers” sounds like quite the experience. I would love to learn more about their home offerings. The men’s coffret would be amazing!! Cheers

  • That dark red color scheme is gorgeous and suggests a luxurious hotel lobby or comfortable lounge—very cool space. Glad the clever “scenting chambers” are still the focus. I haven’t tried any Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle fragrances, so I’d enjoy sampling the line.

I’m in the USA. If I were to win, I’d choose The Men’s Essential Collection Coffret. Thanks!

  • I love the idea of smelling columns, always find it so hard to properly judge a scent in a perfume shop due to all the competing smells. I’d love to try out the men’s collection if I win! Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Must visit the next time I’m up in NYC along with their neighbours. The luxurious cocoon of Frédéric Malle’s signature red is gorgeous with those sleek glass cylinders. It’s a choreography of fragrance, design, and atmosphere which is so vintage Madison Avenue. I’m in the US.

  • yada.yada.yada89 says:

I’m so glad they kept the scenting chambers.

I’d love to get the Men’s Collection. I have been trying to decide if I should get Bigarade Concentrée. My favorite is Iris Poudre. I live in the USA.

  • LeSchnozzle says:

Frédéric Malle Is a brand I haven’t had the pleasure to experience, but I’m quite excited to check them out. Visiting this new store may be an excellent chance to get the full experience. I’m glad they chose to keep those very unique sounding smelling areas, that sounds like an ideal environment to take in some wonderful scents. Of the two Coffrets, I would prefer the men’s version. I live in the US

  • foreverscents says:

It’s a joy to visit perfume boutiques like Frédéric Malle when traveling to New York City. The new flagship on Madison Avenue looks stunning in red! I am glad they have scenting chambers. What an innovative and extraordinary way to experience a fragrance. I have tried Portrait of a Lady from the house.
I would select the men’s coffret if I were the winner of the draw.
    I live in the USA.

  • Thank You Hernando for this amazingly generous giveaway!
Very much looking forward to visiting the updated store….
I am in the USA and would love to have a chance at trying out Female Coffret.

  • I’ve been to the store and it’s such a nice compact space that showcases the full range so neatly. Love the fragrance pyramid that shows the various styles on a spectrum as well. Really enjoyed the interview questions about how this store is different to the others – have to visit again soon! Live in nyc. Would like the men’s.
