Some of my favourite artworks are on paper or made from it, it’s a beautiful material that’s over looked being an everyday disposable item, however, once you delve into the diverse textures and variations of paper a whole new world opens up to you. Before you ask, munken kristall rough and munken lynx are my favourites for printing onto, while Hahnemühle’s pearlescent photo paper adds a lovely shimmer when needed. Fabriano, with its cotton and silk components, is both exquisite and fragile, reminiscent of delicate skin. Additionally, a sturdy 320gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper is a pleasure to work with. Yet, nothing is more daunting than a pristine white sheet; it holds infinite possibilities and the potential for countless failures. Artists like Martin Creed and Marit Roland have taken this underestimated material and created elegant sculptures from it, minimal yet with a deep conceptual depth, moving the creative touch off its surface to a shape it form.

Paper works by Martin Creed and Marit Roland

Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal, the creative minds and perfumers behind Voyages Imaginaires, drew inspiration for Comme Un Gant from the works of French artist Claudine Drai at a recent Venice Biennial. Drai’s preferred materials are paper, particularly silk and Japanese varieties, which she crinkles to shape and immortalize a fragile world. By transforming the immaterial into tangible forms, she crafts compositions that extend beyond their canvas, engaging with light and shadow to unveil new realms where subtle presences emerge. The delicacy of her pieces is accentuated by a dominant white palette, creating effects of transparency, illusion, and light play. Her art works transitions from a “nothing” of paper to form and back again, as light and movement interact within their space. Perfume operates in a similar way the shaping and forming an invisible space that morphs into an abstract yet tangible sculpture, as if it’s a durational performance that plays out on your skin. This concept is beautifully accomplished in Voyages Imaginaires Comme Un Gant.

Images of Claudine Drai’s paper works

Creamy coconut intertwines with a gentle, aromatic hint of cardamom, creating a dance of light gliding over soft, pale blonde woods and the rich essence of dry Madagascan vanilla. Comme Un Gant flows through these delicate shades and tones of creams and whites, moving gracefully as if illuminated by light, casting a shimmering effect on your skin as it dries down. It beautifully captures the textures of various papers; the light musky blonde woodiness combined with a touch of coconut conjures the feel of watercolour paper, thick and luxurious, offering a dense yet sensuous softness that has a biteable quality. There’s a creamy slick hot pressed cartridge paper feel that lingers in the air around you like a silky translucent veil, the vanilla and cardamom conjure this smooth sleekness that flows in a milky way sketching this elegant abstract structure around it’s more dense textured heart.

When I tested Comme Un Gant on a friend’s skin, the initial notes on her revealed a sweeter, creamier profile, with the vanilla and coconut exuding a light caramel nuance that imparted an effortlessly smooth and sensual aura. On my skin more of the woody facets from the Madagascan vanilla come forward with the sandalwood feeling soft and buttery, almost milky as if it’s melting, along with a gentle vanillic balsamic sweetness lingered at the edges, accompanied by a subtle note, reminiscent of heliotrope, but less floral and almond-like. Instead, it felt as if the delicate shavings of sandalwood had been blended into creamy musk, with coconut adding a nutty gourmand twist. The musky ambrette sweetness also came through, making Comme Un Gant irresistibly delicious, as this musk enveloped the vanilla and coconut like a delicate, translucent shell, merging beautifully to create a stunning creamy woody musk experience.

Golden hues gradually unfold, as if the light itself has transformed, infusing Comme Un Gant with a gentle warmth. An abstracted Haitian vetiver is felt from its rooty warmth deeply intertwined with woody vanilla and enveloped in soft, musky sandalwood that seems to emphasize all the best parts of your own skin, elevating them, making me feel smooth and clean, edible and sensual. The coconut-vanilla blend in Comme Un Gant transports me back to the classic macaroon bars of my childhood. Unlike a traditional macaroon, this version features a caramelized coconut sweetness, reminiscent of the treat but without the chocolate coating.  It’s also the coconut that gives Comme Un Gant this understated luxurious feel, letting soft cedar like musks feel like the softest pillow of woody shavings for you to rest on. The creamy notes linger endlessly, with subtle darker undertones emerging as the creamy coconut mingles with soft woods and musks, conjuring images of rice paper. There’s a delicate floral hint, perhaps a whisper of mimosa, blurring the lines and softening the edges as the gentle tonal waves intertwine. Comme Un Gant, beautifully matches its concept with its light translucent feel, like the artworks of paper, that don’t scream for attention but rather give you this beautiful intimate experience as the light and dark shades dance and move revealing themselves in elegant subtle rich tones. Comme Un Gant elevates the air around you, wrapping you in this shimmering white abstract sculpture that moves with you just like the light on the artworks. Voyages Imaginaires Comme Un Gant is the essence of elegant minimalism.

Notes: Cardamom, Sandalwood, Coconut, Vanilla, Haitian Vetiver.

  • Art as a focal point and inspiration for perfumery can lead to extraordinary creations that fuse scent, sensory and the artistic. the influence of artist Claudine Drai’s work, with the focus on light, transparency and illusion play out with the notes of coconut, blonde woods, cardamom and vanilla, weaving a unique olfactory experience. Whether it reads sweeter or more woody on the wearer, this perfume sound very interesting.

The hues and minimalist approach used not only on the pictures we see here but the fragrance itself dictates the path the perfumer took with this creation. Clean and linen-like, Comme Un Gant is a fragrance perfect for everyday wear and for those that look for a minimalist, inoffensive fragrance. Paper-like almost, Voyages Imaginaires transport us to a subtle but rich world full of musks and woody touches. This is signature scent worthy. I’m located in the USA

  • Comme Un Gant by Voyages Imaginaires beautifully captures the delicate, immersive artistry of paper sculptures, transforming it into a fragrance experience that’s tactile and evocative. The creamy coconut and cardamom create a unique warmth that dances over softwoods, reminiscent of silk or textured paper under shifting light. Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen have crafted something extraordinary— a scent that feels like an abstract sculpture, evolving subtly with each note. This olfactive ‘sculpture’ truly complements the work of artists like Claudine Drai, and I’m excited about the chance to experience this masterpiece firsthand! Paris.

  • I always enjoy learning about the ways different artistic practices can all inform each other! These notes sound like an interesting and more conceptual way to invoke the inspiration. Would love to give this one a try! (From a fan of heavyweight hot press watercolor paper)

  • Wow this fragrance sounds like it smells fantastic!
    Paper,Silky,coconut,vanilla…
These notes sorta remind me of how a natural elegant house smell that’s beautiful.
This article was very descriptive and well written. Cheers NJ USA

  • I love the comparison of various papers with this perfume. I love paper almost as much as I love fragrance. Highly crafted papers have their own unique sensory palette as Claudine Drai expresses in her art. What excites me is that Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen have used this art as inspiration for this fragrance, creating an olifactory sensory palette. And I loved the way J also described the fragrance on their skin and their friend’s skin, the notes rising and falling differently on them. It reminds me of the magnificence of watercolor on different papers – how it ebbs and flows, rising and falling differently on each. This fragrance sounds like something that I would really enjoy – the scent of artists.

  • I love the description of this as a “translucent” kind of scent – a shimmering abstract sculpture! Beautiful. Thank you for the chance to win the latest work of art from Voyages Imaginaires. USA.

  • J’s review of Comme Un Gant by Voyages Imaginaires highlights several intriguing aspects of this fragrance. The inspiration behind the scent, drawn from the artistic ambiance of Venice and the Biennale, creates a vivid image of light dancing on delicate, crumpled silk paper, that really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I was engrossed in reading this tonight. You expressed an incredible portrayal of this fragrance, J. A friend mentioned how this fragrance had captured a piece of her heart. I blind-bought it from Indigo Perfumery and agree that it is the essence of elegant minimalism. Please do not enter me in the giveaway.

  • The quality of paper that has fascinated me is that it can be so delicate, yet it can also be constructed into a solid multi dimensional shape that is so much more sturdy and robust than when it is just a single flat sheet. I do love coconut and cardamom and sandalwood and finding these qualities in paper is so interesting to me. I did enjoy Claudine Drai’s art in this article, and how J enjoyed the scent and drew their experience back to paper and the qualities of Drai’s art. Thank you for the lovely review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • This article does a fantastic job of highlighting how both art and scent can capture the essence of paper. Artists like Claudine Drai bring paper to life, shaping it to play with light and shadows, giving the material a fresh depth. Similarly, Comme Un Gant by Voyages Imaginaires is like an artwork in scent form. The blend of creamy coconut, soft woods, and warm vanilla feels as delicate and layered as textured paper, creating an elegant, barely-there vibe that’s rich and endlessly interesting. I would love to try this!

Art replicating art. I like that from the canvas to the air. Both arts “transforming the immaterial into tangible forms…one on canvas, the other in my mind via the olfactive journey.
The notes in this creation have captured my attention. I look forward to experiencing all that this scent has to offer.

  • Wow, J’s description of Comme Un Gant really brings the fragrance to life! The way they compare the scent to paper textures and artworks is fascinating—it’s like the perfume is a sensory sculpture that you wear. I love the idea of creamy coconut and cardamom blending with that soft sandalwood and warm vanilla, all evoking the feel of watercolour paper and delicate, translucent layers. Plus, the mix of coconut and woody musk sounds absolutely cozy and delicious. This feels like it’s made to be both comforting and elegantly understated, like a hidden gem. Definitely intrigued!

  • I always have a lot of time for Voyages Imaginaires’ créations and feel especially intrigued about this one. Understated elegance is precisely what I think we need more of these days and I found these evocations of silk and rice paper very intriguing. I definitely will look to try Comme un gant. (Plus the name is great!)

  • I instantly fell in love with this fragrance based on J’s description: “Creamy coconut intertwines with a gentle, aromatic hint of cardamom, creating a dance of light gliding over soft, pale blonde woods and the rich essence of dry Madagascan vanilla. • Reading about Drai’s paper work was interesting. My interest was sparked regarding the perfume by this cardamom note. US

  • This one sounds very exotic and it makes me dream of distant places and tropical getaways. Thanks! Europe

  • Ooh I do love coconut, vanilla and cardamom! I really appreciate how the reviewer mentioned the scent smelling different on a friend. I tend to amp woody notes myself, and I find it very helpful to know whether I have comparable skin chemistry. USA

  • Comme un Gant described by J sounds like the perfect comfort fragrance. Cozy coconut and vanilla, soft floral touches, mimosa and heliotrope (I find powdery floral notes to be the most “maternal” and comforting) and then sandalwood, a perfect closing note for a grounding and calming experience.
Even the bottle looks like an expression of the same feel – clean, quiet and classy.

  • David Furman says:

This seems like a true gift to perfumery and a breath of fresh air. This appears to be a light focused scent and the use of white florals is obvious. The notes breakdown isn’t too challenging and nothing seems out of place in this composition. Would love to win this bright bad boy from Jacksonville, NC.

  • The use of paper in art creation is an interesting focus for perfume creation. I’m not familiar with Claudine Drai, but her use of paper types like Japanese and silk crumpled and folded into delicate, translucent shapes. Comme Un Gant reflects the delicacy of the paper with gently, soothing notes like cardamom, sandalwood, coconut and vanilla. The composition sounds calming and elegant. MD, USA.

  • I’m always curious about coconut in perfume. It’s versatile but tricky imo. It needs sultry, sophisticated bedfellows. And cardamon is surely that! I also love Haitian vetiver. This sounds amazing.
Thank you for the give away.

  • I love the way Voyages Imaginaires Comme Un Gant sounds ans J’s review makes it really sound great. The notes r up my alley but the way it came across to J on him ans his female friend differently is something I always am curious about and like to try as well but off both people it sounds great and the white idea seems to come through. Thanks for the generous draw, from USA.

  • At first I was wary of all the connotation with paper and whiteness (cough blandness cough), but as the article reminded us, that are many different facets to the paper as it can be made out of many different materials. I would definitely agree that watercolor paper with its texture and absorbency is one of my favorites to use, and even having a lovely paperstock and a nice fountain pen makes writing a more pleasant tactile experience. The description of the fragrance makes it sound so elegant and enjoyable and remind us of all the different ways to appreciate such a ubiquitous but varied substance!

I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

I’m sure we all use paper in our daily life, but surely we don’t pay too much attention to it, let alone know so many things as J about its texture, smell, feel, look.
I like to read his posts, they always reveal a bit of his interests, other than perfume. Comme Un Gant sounds chameleonic, ethereal and artsy.

I would love to visit this art instalation while wearing this perfume. The reviewer has me completely entranced in the concept and interpretation of this fragrance. The perfume sounds simple, yet complete. I’m in love. I live in Oregon

  • Perfume and works of art, the persuasive and strangely warm white, this is my sensation, vanilla and coconut, a wonderful caress. The description of COMME UN GANT is beautiful.
I don’t have any perfume from the brand.

  • J certainly captured the exquisite essence of Comme Un Gant.
You transported us with your review. Thank you.

Comme Un Gant is truly the essence of elegant minimalism!

  • As an artist, I understand the subtle beauty of paper. There are so many qualities to consider when choosing the right paper for a project, especially when working in a media that interacts with the paper like ink or watercolor. I love that Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal drew inspiration from Claudine Drai’s ethereal work in the media! The idea of using the notes of a perfume to capture the textures of paper is very novel. I’d love to try Comme Un Gant and experience the way that the coconut, vanilla, and soft woods create this shimmering texture! Best wishes from NJ.

  • Taleofarose says:

Interesting story about J’s love for paper. I once visited the museum of paper in Basel and made my own- it smelled sweet, creamy, like the core of the wood it came from.

Comme Un Gant has the same subtle but rich white tones of the freshly made paper, and I’d love to give it a try on the skin.

    Greetings from Portugal

  • Interesting review—I appreciated the profile of artists that work with paper to achieve such striking results. Drai’s tryptich shown in the second photo is particularly attention-grabbing. I’m intrigued by the monochromatic palette Voyages Imaginaires Comme Un Gant uses to create creamy, woody texture, wrapped around that “irresistibly delicious” musk. I for one wouldn’t mind smelling a bit like a macaroon cookie, especially with the Haitian Vetiver in there to pull this back from full-on gourmand. Comme Un Gant sounds lovely.

    I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds dreamy and the perfect scent to wear on a rainy day on the couch reading a good book. I prefer my macaroons with the chocolate coating, but I’m glad it is not in the fragrance. The shavings of sandalwood in the creamy musk with a touch of gourmand sounds divine! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I would love to win this perfume simply because I love Isabelle Doyen’s work, my favorite iris-violet is Mon parfum chéri, my favorite tuberose is Nuit de bakélite, my favorite immortelle is Sables, my favorite citrus is Ninfeo Mio.
I haven’t tried any Voyages imaginaires perfume yet. I like this passage: “Comme Un Gant elevates the air around you, wrapping you in this shimmering white abstract sculpture that moves with you just like the light on the artworks.” and “On my skin more of the woody facets of the Madagascan vanilla come forward with the sandalwood feeling soft and buttery, almost milky as if it’s melting, along with a gentle vanillic balsamic sweetness lingered at the edges, accompanied by a subtle note, reminiscent of heliotrope, but less floral and almond-like.” I live in France, EU.

  • I love that this review described how the fragrance interacted with two different people/skin tests with different results. That to me is more evidence of an expertly crafted fragrance that has nuance and layers. I am most interested in the interplay of coconut, cardamom and sandalwood – I need to get my nose on this!

    I live in the USA.

  • I need to get my nose on this! The review gives me the impression that this fragrance is a work of art.Smooth and clean, edible and sensual. I love all the notes of vanilla, coconut
sandalwood, vetiver with the description of a musk and hints of floral.
